One Mission I really wish I was on ! Article: Bikers descended on the town of Newtown yesterday and linked arms blocking the hate group protesters of Westboro Baptist Church from disrupting the funerals. "More than 100 riders from New York and Massachusetts, organized by the anti-Westboro group Patriot Guard Riders, were also in Connecticut on Wednesday to show their support, Patch reported. The lined the streets arm in arm." “All these guys see us and think we’re bad. We’re not. It’s solidarity, is what it is,” New York native Jim Hannigan told Newtown Patch. “I just felt I had to be here.” Source and Photo by Newton Patch.

I am planning a 'sickle trip for next summer. We plan to ride from Illinois to Niagara area then to Adirondacks, Vermont, Quebec, Maine, New Brunswick, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, etc. and back home. About 3500 miles. We plan to camp every night except if it is raining or very cold, then Mom and Pop motels are preferred. I have obtained state highway maps from all the states we will be riding through except for New York. I've spent considerable time online trying to get an official state highway map from New York, but the links to "obtain a state highway map" return a 404 error. I sent away to the "I Love New York, Division of Tourism" in Albany via snail mail, but the letter returned as "not deliverable as addressed" even though that address was on their website. Researching the New York governmental website was a waste of time; kept referring me to same dead link. Registered with the I Love Yew York website and requested travel information, thinking that New York, like all the other states I had requested tourism information, would send along a state highway map, but no. I received a fifty page glossy travel guide, with nary a map. So my question/favor to those New York residents: would you obtain a New York state highway/road map and mail it to me? Does NY offer free road maps at their border Welcome Centers? Does New York have Welcome Centers? Thanks.

The people in Belgium are completely insane!! But what a fun place to live! Wouldn't want to try this stunt in the U.S. though. No offence to our below the border friends, but can you imagine what would happen if they did that in New York city or Houston, Texas? What am I talking about? Our MTA group is headed for the Letchworth State Park in New York the weekend of July 16th. I have been looking for some place with 7 or 8 rooms available that don't cost an arm and a leg. Is there anyone here that may know of a good local place in the area (willing to ride 20-30 miles to get to the park) that is clean and reasonable. thanks, bob

For me , knowing, I'd didn't have to worry about money, or time, say a year off with pay. I head straight up, into Canada, and ride as much north as I can, before it turned cold again. Visit friends in upstate new york, and stay in every KOA campground, throught the U.S. & Canada I'd be one happy Camper, But for now, Its just a:draming:

Well, I guess I gotta go to the big city (New York, New York) for 4th of July. Mochalady needs to show up for a wedding on July the 2nd. We plan on flying out of Texas on the 29th-30th of June and fly back home about the 6th-7th of July. If anyone is familiar with the Islip/Babylon area we will need to find a car rental and the best way to get around. The cheapest way in and out is via JFK. I looked at MacArthur and the price just about doubles!! I hope to visit the WTC memorial on the 5th and pretty much stay around Babylon or suburbs the rest of the time. If it was just me I would iron-butt my 1st Gen and have a blast doing it. Thanks in advance folks JB

This will devastate our local economy: Harley-Davidson Inc. could shrink or shut down its York County plant as the company tries to slash costs. "We have determined that we need to make some major changes in our York operations to position them competitively," spokesman Bob Klein said today. The 230-acre Springettsbury Township plant is widely viewed as an anchor of the local economy. Milwaukee-based Harley has more than 2,000 employees here, though layoffs are eroding the numbers. The problems at the plant include excess capacity and inefficiencies, Klein said. Harley plans to compare the cost of moving the operation with the cost of revamping it, he said. He declined to discuss long-term demand projections underlying Harley's review. Preliminary recommendations are expected by the fall. Harley in 2003 expanded the plant with a roughly $145 million factory for its Softail line of bikes. One scenario for keeping the plant open is to move production of Touring model bikes out of a separate building that dates back to the World War II era and into the new building, Klein said. A three-year contract the company hammered out with its union amid a 2007 strike will expire in February. Asked whether contract concessions might save the plant, union leader Dave Bunnell said: "That's always a possibility. We are just getting ready to elect our negotiating committee, and 'til we do that we won't be in talks at all." Bunnell is president of Local 175 of the International Association of Machinists (IAM) and Aerospace Workers. Klein only said labor costs would be a factor in the company's calculations. The IAM and another Harley union, the United Steelworkers, are involved in the company's review of a potential move, Klein said. Harley is assuming a new facility would be unionized, he said. Local union leaders also are working with management on the cost study. No similar reviews are occurring at other Harley plants, Klein said. Harley had about 2,500 hourly workers and 320 salaried workers in York County as of May 1, Klein said. Bunnell said his union counted about 2,140 members as of the latest layoff. And looking ahead, it seems likely the York County plant is at least going to shrink, Bunnell said. "Yeah, that's kind of the feedback we're getting," he said. Harley-Davidson shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol HOG.

Does anyone watch "Ghost Hunters"? Last year for Christmas Big Tom surprised me with a night at Rolling Hills Sanatarium. The Ghost Hunters guys did a program on the place when they were here in Western New York, and it happens to be a half hour East from us in Betthany New York. Talk about a crazy night....we got some really good EVP's on the recorder..(unheard at the time...answers to questions we asked). We went with a few other people...some were skeptics...although after that night I don't think they are skeptics any longer. We were locked in for the night...the hunt started at 10pm and went until 6am. Some of our experiences were being guided out of a room..from behind....when no one was behind us....to loud noices that we couldn't explain...plenty of whispers and shadows. We hope to go back. What do you say....any BELIEVERS?

Seven minute video that's worth watching. Turn your speakers up. If you don't like patriotic tear jerk things don't watch this. It's a 9/11 tribute. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZFkZiwMLZ4]YouTube - Hero performed by Michael Israel in New York[/ame]

Dear fellow members. I am one happy guy now. Just booked and paid for my airline ticket to USA the 26th. of May 2009 to attend "Freebirds Maintenance Day" and meet with all of you nice people. Heading back the 4th. of June. I am like a little kid waiting for Christmas - counting the days!! Can not express how much I am looking forward to this. My bike is in storage at motorcycle shop in Bearsville New York, ready for my arrival, tuned and lubed all through. Henry the nice gentleman in Woodstock NY. who sold me the bike will be picking me up at JFK and I will be spending a couple of days with him and his wife. Then on Friday morning I will hit the road for Oberlin Ohio. Estimate to arrive around 18.00 hours. Spend the weekend with you guys and then head back to Warren Ohio to meet Jim and the guys at the dealership(Yamaha of Warren) who sold me the bike I have in Iceland. Plan to drop by his place without notice and say hello. Think it will be more fun that way. Great guys there who have stretched out many times regarding accessories and spareparts for me and my riding buddys here in Iceland. Most likely spending a night there and taking a slow ride with lot of stops on my way back to New York riding through Pensylvania and hopefully find a Amish region and stop by and say hello so to speak. Question - Would I want to ride through Pocono Mountains in PA? When arriving in New York I will stay with my friend Henry for a couple of days and plan to take day rides upstate to Adirondak Park (Lake) as well as doing some neighbourhood riding in Woodstock. None of this is pinpointed except my arrival in New York and meeting you guys at Freebirds. The rest will be just roughly planned with all possibilities to change directions whenever I feel like it. If any of you guys have any suggestions then by all means speak out. My travelling plan is based on doing a little bit of web browsing as well as using Google Earth. So chime in and give this little Eskimo some suggestions and or guidance. Last but not least - Where would you guys recomend me staying in Oberlin for these two nights? Forget the tent - I am to spoiled for that and hate snakes! Read the other day an older post from someone who had been riding in the US and staying in small towns at 40 US$ motels. Is that possible? All I have found are 70 US$+ for the night. I am not picky regarding acomodation - all I need is a bed to sleep and a shower and I am happy. O.K.,,,,O.K.,,,, I know it is almost seven months but bare with me. I am just so exited. :dancefool::dancefool:

It's about time! MOTORCYCLE GROUPS THREATEN LEGAL ACTION OVER N.Y. ROADBLOCKS The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) announced that its New York attorney has sent a letter of intent to file a class-action lawsuit against New York State Police and the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles in response to a series of discriminatory roadblocks targeting motorcycles en route to motorcycle-related events. After a roadblock was established on New York's I-84 in October 2007, which singled out motorcyclists on their way to a Marcus Dairy Cycle Sunday in nearby Danbury, Conn., motorcyclists' rights advocates learned that Federal Grant money was to be used to fund police overtime to conduct these so-called 'safety checks' at motorcycle events statewide. Despite talks between DMV and representatives of NCOM, the American Motorcyclist Association, ABATE of New York and other motorcycle rights organizations during the winter, roadblocks were also set up on I-88 and the NYS Thruway targeting motorcyclists traveling to the American Motorcycle Jamboree, or AM-JAM, a 24-year old event held at the Cobleskill Fairgrounds, and again on I-87 stopping riders traveling to Americade in Lake George, America's largest touring motorcycle rally. According to Robert 'Prospector' Boellmer, the New England and New York representative of NCOM, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney Mitchell Proner of New York, NY has given notice to the NY State Police and DMV that a class action suit will be filed in protest of the road checks being conducted on state highways during events that draw thousands of motorcyclists. Warren County Tourism Director Kate Johnson said Americade's 2007 economic impact in the region was estimated to have been $46 million. 'The rally brought about 50,000 motorcyclists to the area last year,' she told the newspaper, adding that attendance was down this year. Boellmer told the Daily Gazette that the stops constitute harassment of cyclists and his group will fight them in court to halt the discriminatory roadblocks. He said the national coalition represents more than a thousand motorcycle organizations across the country. 'ABATE of New York, Inc. expresses its opposition to New York State's burgeoning tactic of conducting highway roadblocks which divert only motorcyclists from the state's roadway for the purpose of conducting 'safety checks', and hereby expresses its support of a class-action initiative by the National Coalition of Motorcyclist against the NYS Police and the NYS Dept. of Motor Vehicles,' said Timothy D. Werder, State President of ABATE of New York in an official press release issued by his organization. With the support of ABATE of New York, the AMA and various other biker rights organizations, NCOM officials plan to pursue legal actions against state agencies involved in what they consider unconstitutional infringements.

Got the trip booked for Vegas in Feb. We are only there for a few days. We land on the evening of the 12th Feb. and leave on the 15th I believe. Our "free" day is most likely the 14th and we hope to maybe rent a bike and drive out to the Grand Canyon. Is that plausable? Then maybe meet up with Ron and Linda and whomever else is interested for something to eat. We are staying at New York New York. Feedback and hints are appreciated!
