  1. ... I picked one up recently too, Carl. But it is OLDER than my worn out HHR...sheesh...first time I replaced a worn out car with an older one. Found it in Florida, an '06 Lexus 400H, mica blue, with 30,000 miles. Its darn fast, has all the bells and whistles, and my gas mileage is practically the same as the 4 banger in the HHR...love the way the engine shuts down at intersections. Best of all, my buddy likes it too.
  2. I recently bought a 1990 Venture Royale and practically all the white labeling on the controls, CB, tape player, radio, ..., have been worn off. Anyone know how I can get it repainted?
  3. After 115000km my cruse control was not working on further investigation I discovered that my clutch handle has a slight movement in worn is there a way to fix it or do i have to replace it thanks
  4. These look like they might be progressive but I do not know for sure. There is very little travel for my forks and I am constantly bottomong out. If they are stock they are worn out. If they are progressive they may not have the correct spacers. when I took the cap off there was verry little pressure.
  5. If anyone needs new mufflers for their G1 Venture, (at least I think these are for a G1), they should try Niche Cycle. According to their website it looks like they still have MAC turn downs in stock. I was under the impression that there wasnt any mufflers being made any longer for the G1 bikes so this might be a good opportunity if your pipes are getting worn. I dont know anything about this company, I just looked at the website, so check them out before ordering, and make sure that they are for the G1 bike, not the G2. http://www.nichecycle.com/ProductDesc.aspx?code=004-4315&type=0&eq=&desc=Yamaha-Venture-Turn-Down-Mufflers Brian
  6. Web Bike Worlds article on customer satisfaction for helmets seems to show 'you get what you pay for'. Having owned HJC, Nolan, Fulmer and Scorpion, I guess I fall into that category. The scorpion is by far the best I have worn. What do you think? The report is linked on the right side or click here.
  7. 87 VR, lots of miles. I figured I'd post this in General Tech because I bet the calipers are about the same. I had noticed that my rear pads were worn thin at the aft end, but much thicker at the forward end. It had me wondering if the forward pistons were seized, but they are not. Then I noticed significant grooves, maybe 1/32" deep, in the forward surface of the brake-pad-cavity in the caliper. The braking forces shove the pads forward against these surfaces whenever the rear brakes are used, and the backing plates have worn these grooves. They then get caught in the grooves, not allowing the pads to clamp any closer to the rotors at the forward edge, causing the wedge-shaped wear on the pads. Make sense? Anybody else seen this? I thought about filing the surrounding material down to make it smooth again, but then the cavity will be bigger than it's supposed to be and the pads might not contact that surface like they are supposed to. But I don't know that I have any choice, short of replacing the caliper. Ideas? Thanks, Jeremy
  8. Is anyone making these now. I got the original one from the guy in FL and there is a hole worn through it. If someone wants to attempt it I could send the old one to them.
  9. it's true.. i wore out the kickstand.... 07 RSV w/103k miles. it hangs down and scrapes on anything other than a very moderate left turn.. annoys heck outa the navigator............. dealership says the bushing in there is a maintenance item. ok - i can go along with that.. $9.56 for a new bushing. however - the metal on th ekickstand itself has worn so that - when stowed - it still hangs down an inch or so... New kickstand - $241 (ouch) anyway - be advised -- CHECK your bushing and replace as needed...
  10. Not too long ago I noticed the clutch was slipping. It wasn't too bad, it only happened when I did a high gear roll on going up a grade 2-up and pulling a Voyager Kit. Ordered the parts earlier this month, but never had a chance to tear into the bike until yesterday. Me and my 11 year old grandson did the job in a couple of hours. The internals were VERY clean, there were no surprises in the oil, and the steels all looked brand new. The friction plates were another matter. The friction material was worn VERY thin, but fortunately none of the plates were worn down to metal. Saw that happen on a '97 RSTD, and it was a mess..... Anyway we got her back together, and now I have plenty of clutch.
  11. What's odd? They are wearing evenly! Thursday on the way home from work I heard metal to metal so I bought a set of pads so I could change them today. From what I have read here I was expecting one to be to the metal and one to possibly be half worn. When I got them off the outer one had gotten paper thin and one corner had worn to the metal. The inner pad was about the thickness of a postcard. That's as good as I could expect from any pad. I was impressed with the number of miles I got from them also. According to the PO's service records I got just over 21k on them and I use them all the time for "friction zone" turns. I'm surprised at the front pads also. I checked them and they are about half worn.
  12. I had been looking for boots for a while. I finally found RedWing Zipper 979 Motorcycle boots. They have been the most comfortable boots I've ever worn.
  13. 10,000 miles and I get a noise like a rock is caught but I don't believe that's the issue. Need to take the calipers off and have a look. Would the pads be worn out already? They have indicators for wear? As an aside, we did a beautiful overniter into Kalispell MT thru Eureka. What a gorgeous couple days here!
  14. I've got a mustang seat, plain with the backrest and rear pillion I'm thinking of selling. they're a year old with approximately 9500 miles on it. There all in very good condition with no tears or worn areas. What do you guys think a fair price would be on them. Thanks
  15. I've put 21,500 mi on the 07 RSV and here is my experience so far with tires. 8,000 mi: Stock Bridgestone Rear tire worn out at 8k mi. It handled ok but was a bit noisey.Replaced with Dunlop D404. 10,000 mi: Rear Dunlop 404 showing cord all around. That's right. 2,000 miles and worn slap out! Front stock Bridgestone worn out and showing uneven wear from one side to another. Replaced with Avon Venom X front and rear. Bike handled and rode better than ever with no roar or whine from the tires on straights or corners. 21,500 mi: Replace rear Avon with another Avon Venom X. Rain grooves in center of tire where gone and the profile was squared of. Probably could have gone a little longer on this tire but needed routine maint done so I just got it done all at once. Front tire looks like it still has at least 50% tread left. I ride about 50% solo and 50% two up. I keep a good watch on my tire pressures and run at the suggested amount. On the Avons I run the rear at 50 lbs and the front at 42 lbs. When I first got the Avons I called their tech service and they said if you run max pressure they will last longer since they will stay cooler (less flexing). I do a good bit of hwy riding but I live in the N GA mtns so I ride alot of twistys also. I'd say the mileage is about 50% hwy, 50% twisting country roads. This is my experience. For my money I will stick with the Avons until I have a good reason to change.-Jack
  16. Here's a link to the website where I picked up the mesh jackets for Phil and I. Yesterday was the first time we worn them for any distance, and they were great. I am very happy that we got them. http://store.valueaccessories.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1644&MMP=1014317010
  17. Here's an interesting pic that I spliced together showing the tread profile of my old worn out Avon vs. the Federal SS657. Each tire here is mounted and inflated to show its actual profile. Obviously I couldn't have both of them on the same rim at the same time, thus the splice. I may have gotten the scale of the Federal a hair smaller than that of the Avon, but they're pretty close. The new Federal is more rounded than the old worn out Avon. Of course the Avon would be more rounded when it was new. So it looks like the tread profile of the Federal would about match the profile of the Avon when it was about half worn down. It looks to me like a CT is not too square to use and is plenty rounded enough to have a good contact patch in a corner.
  18. So after putting the 89 VR on the center stand and looking under, I noticed some play in the pivot area. I refer to the following parts diagram from South Seattle sports plaza online at http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/2/Yamaha.aspx (sorry guys, the link didn't work completely. You have to put in motorcycle, 1989, xvz1300w venture, and then select swing arm) After removing shaft1, I found the items marked #33 (bushing) to be badly worn. I did remove the nut from shaft2 but was unable to remove it to see if there is any play on the shock area...any ideas how to get that shaft out? Do I have to punch it out? My biggest worry is getting to Bolt #29 with attached self locking nut #31. I know there are more bushings in that area but be d****d it I can get them loose. Do I have to remove the exhaust collector unit? It looks like it would be much easier to access the bolt and nut if I did so...but then I looked up how to remove the exhaust collector and it seems more complicated than I need right now. Is there a special tool or method some of you have used to access this area? Since I have to travel this weekend and parts must be ordered, I have decided to put the worn bushing back in for now and ride conservatively on this short trip. That's not hard to do in "Flatland" Saskatchewan, Canada. Any help and opinions greatly appreciated folks. Thanks.
  19. What kind of mileage does our clutch generally have in it, and what kind of symptoms happen when it's worn out? Does it just quit hooking up and slips all the time? My bike has close to 45,000 miles on it now, and I'm doubting that the clutch has ever been touched, seeing as how I got it with less than 15,000. I've heard of some that were worn out by the mid 30s. I'm not having any problems with it yet. I just don't know what to expect or what happens. I've never worn a clutch out in any vehicle.
