I know we often talk of deer and drivers that don't see us... but keep your eyes out and be attentive of other things as well. http://www.lfpress.com/2012/10/27/biker-seriously-injured-after-striking-cart-left-in-road-in-london As the season winds down for most of us, drivers are less attentive to bikers, and the obstacles faced increase. Be careful out there.

Well last sunday was a beautiful day, it was hot, windy and there were all sorts of clouds in the sky. I put on about 140 miles and decided it was time to head home. I'd been listening to a tape all day so i turned on the radio to hear a severe weather outbreak warning for my area. Actually, not my area, more like about 30 counties surrounding me. They warned of torrential winds and baseball sized hail, so i decided to book it home. I got to a town that was 16 miles away from home and a big black wall cloud was the only thing stopping me from being in a cage, actually able to run into the thing. I decided if i go real fast i might get through it before it gets bad. Do things really turn out like that in life? I should be the one to say hell no. It was a downpour, which didnt bother me (what are the fairings for anyways right?), but then i noticed everything around me getting louder, and the bike getting pushed off the road. I then heard a slight *chink sound, and then another and another. I managed to pull over, do a quick U-Turn and gunned it straight back into the town i was just in. I managed to get out of the storm, which was predominately moving north, as i was moving east and this sort of caught my eye. The part on the right of the picture was on the ground, pushing winds at well past 70 and indeed throwing hail sideways. I was lucky i didnt get in the middle of it. But i put the bike under a lean-to and also watched to funnel clouds rotating from the ground up across the road from me. Needless to say it was a wet and wild ride

Ok, so while we are no strangers to wind in Oklahoma (although not the tumbleweed state some people think) we regularly get several days of constant 45-50 mph gust (like today), swirling, from sides, head on, tail wind, you name it. How do you take on these winds? slow down? lay down? Speed up? I know there are hundreds of thousands of miles logged by riders on this site. And while I know you all can't have the tainted "texas" winds from the Gulf we get here, what is your method? I have mine, but am eager to learn........ lets hear it! p.s. I dont care if you ride a "first Gen" and they cut the wind like a knife.....:whistling:: :stirthepot:

After about three weeks of poor weather, work and other things. The wife and I finally got a few miles in. (even if it was on the wing) We rode about 40 miles one way for coffie. Despite the 40 mph cross winds at times she managed a few pic's and that cup of Tim Hortons coffie never tasted so good. The only problem was that it was only 40 miles home:cool10:

Loving my "new to me" 03RSV. One thing that seems to be worse than my 1st Gen is the reaction to cross winds and headwinds. Old paint is relatively unfazed while the RSV seems to be much more at the whim of mother nature. It hasn't been all that windy here, maybe 30mph winds tops. Granted the RSV has all the aerodynamic qualities of a barn door (BTW my profession is in airflow dynamics) compared to the 1st Gen; but the difference on the road is striking. Anyone else notice this or is there something I need to be checking on.

I just managed to get my forks apart and have some questions. I was under the impression that progressive springs were different from OEM because they had tighter winds on one end. All parts seemed OEM and there was no PVC spacer or whatever. The ones I took out also had tighter winds on one end. So now I'm confused. I measured the springs and they were both @ 18" long. Manual says they should be 23.6"! If these are OEM, can this compression be for real? Had some minor pits but smoothed them out with #400 then #2000 watersand and polished them with Flitz. They look like new. Tried to send photo but I guess I don't know how to do that. I inserted attachment but it apparently went to never, never land.

... as I'm noticing less and less new threads and/or posts showing up. Looks like we're finally shedding the crappy weather we've been having. Today, tomorrow, and Sunday all sunny and warm ... it is a welcome change from rain, cold, high winds, hail, etc that has been going on for weeks. I just "might" take the scoot out...after I clean it of all the cobwebs!!

wow, I did a beautiful job with the carb synch yesterday. Today I barely got 130 miles from a tank of gas traveling an average of 75-80 mph on the highway.. wow.. now THAT sucks.. =( We had high winds today, but mostly coming from quartering rear, average temps of 45'F.. I know the carb synch was spot on as the buzz in the mirrors is gone and the bike rode smoother than before.. But man, I would typically get 160 miles on the tank before needing to fuel with some to spare, but today, I was down to the last bar or two on the fuel gauge.. that's hard to take.. Do high winds make THAT much of a diff on fuel mileage? I know running at higher speeds will cause it to suck..

This passed friday morning, melody & I, packed up the bike & trailer, and headed south, on chrome aveune to 41 west. We crossed the everglades, trying to miss, the rain bands, that were, stream lining across I-75, at mid-morning. we caught a few rain drops at Chrome & 41, but most of our ride, was just over case., tempetures below the rain line, were like in the 70's, but once we got closer to the storms the temps dropped, quickly to the low 50's.. the ride across 41, was an easy cruise, at about 55-60. and most of the time, there were no cars behind us.. Upon entering the area of Marco Island, and turning to the north on 41, the winds started to pick up,, but still able to cruise at 60 mph. with in a few minutes of getting into Naples, the skys opened up, and the wind gusted from 45 to 60 mph, dropped us to a speed of just 20 mph. the vis was less then 10 feet at times. (melody comes over the intercom) Mike are we riding sideways?, No babe that the wind pushing us across the road, I reply......, every cage moved out of our way. we rode straight throw all the rain. I think this was the hardest rain we had ever seen, ( Like a fire hose, wide open on our heads) stopping only once, to let traffic pass us., we made our way out of Naples, the rains let up alittle, but we still rode the right lane, with the flashers on, and could only reach a speed of 40 mph. the winds beat the day lights out of us. (Melody knowing the area better then I) Informs me we have 40 miles to go. I'm thinking "Oh Joy".. Now about 1:30 pm, we stop for gas. inspect the bike & trailer, as we always do., top off, and into the rains and wind again., the roads, became more so bare, as we got closer to Ft. Myers, and we could see way. Trees down, water up and over most of the roads. the winds were hammering the area. we slowly made our way to the outter roads of Sanibel, (Thinking to myself how wonderful its going to be) the crossing of the bridges, this is going tobe horrorfying. ( I told Melody to hang on for her life) the bridge is covered with oil, from the cars, we may drop the bike, if i can't control it. what ever you do, hand onto the bike. and if I lean, to the right, lean with me. even if it scares you. so we prepare ourselfs going up the bridge, as the wind hammered the front of the bike, and slowed our accent to 3 mph, the oils from the car, made it fell just like ice. and the wind, pushed us, into the on comming line, briefly. as we crested the top.. I could see the trailer, sliding to the left, as we start our decent, into the wind, down the other side. the clutch out and in 2nd gear, we slowly made our way, down the 1st bridge. ( I felt like I was stairing the grime reeper dead in his face) the only thing keeping me going, was shear fear......., I pulled over, to regain my wits, and for a few seconds, (for me time, to relax, from the extreme stress). My arms, and back felt like I just got beat to a pulp. Melody comes over the intercom, Mike lets just get there. i cant feel my arms or hands I'm so cold. I'm freezing. We pull out into traffic, and head for the second bridge, this one alot lower, But just as windy, we crawled across this one, and the little flat bridge, the same way. when we hit the Island, most of the people were trying to leave. all the roads were flooded. and tree branches, all over the roads., they had just been hit hard, buy this storm. now, protected, from the winds, the cold creep up on me, and I finally felt the weather. I was soaked straight throw. as we made our way to the cottage on Captiva Island. my body was completely Numb. Melody, jumped off the bike, and headed for the room to jump in the shower, to get her body tempeture back up. she was shaking, un-controllable. while she was warming up in the shower. I un-loaded the trailer. & Bike, and turned the heater on in the room.. then followed suit. it rained all night. winds slowly dead downed after mid-night. The weather reports said, by 7 am Sanibel Island would have no clouds, with bright sunshine, and be about 70. as we returned in, I remeber thinking, "never again" will we ride in something like this. and made a packed with my wife. the following morning. That I will never to put her in danger, like that again. The next morning: To our surprise, it was 71 degrees, and the brightest blue skys, you've ever seen. It hert to look up. about 9 am we went to breakfast, then layed on the beach, conoe'd, bird watched, and did alittle shopping, and ate at fantasic eatery's. Sunday morning we, had a small breakfast., then had a fantasic lunch with some friends. and we headed home. we found the winds had picked up, as we rode I-75 south into Naple, But was grateful, we turned away from the winds, heading east, across the alley. It made it a pleasent trip home. (Melody) you ever notice, that when people get on the Alley, the seem to drive faster, like there afraid, their car is going to break down, while crossing here". and you know, its so true. the fear of being stranded...... I don't know, I like ridiing it all the time, but I enjoy my ride, 65-70, I don't see it as a barren waste land. our ride over on Friday 4.5 solid hours. our ride home 2.75 hours. Got back from 4 day trip yesterday, Seattle, to Kalispell Mt. and up to near Glacier Nat. park. Good run, bike performed great. Hit some bad road construction on Hwy 93 just north of Missoula, Mt. 10 miles of gravel. I wanted to see " FlatHead Lake " area. Great place to ride. Weather still on the cold side up in that area. ( 42 deg. here in Seattle this morning, must be Global Warming !! ) On return trip yesterday on I-90 from Vantage Wa. to top of Cascade range, I hit some really bad cross winds, about 30 to 40 MPH Winds. Traffic on I-90 was heavy and running 70 to 75, and that wind was vicious. The 1st Gens Do NOT like cross winds. Frankly it was a battle to keep the bike on the road. Winds seemed to be changing direction, thru the canyons, getting hit from the left, then the right, etc. For those 1st Gen riders, who have never encountered, high cross winds, be warned , these bike have a lot of surface for cross winds to have effect !!! Anyway, 1250 mile 4 day trip, great ride, great scenery up around Glacier Nat. Park. Lots of bikes headed North on Mt. Hwy 93. A challenging ride, I highly reccomend. I also rode sections of Hwy #2, I highly reccomend, from Dakota's all the way to the Pacific Coast, if you have the time !! Deffinatly put Hwy #2 on your " To DO, Someday List " !!!! Well, guess I will have to cut the grass today And wash the bike, its really dirty !!

Buckeye Performance contact issues. Hurricane force winds cause area wide power outages. Yes, we got them here in Ohio! If you have orders pending or waiting of a quote or answer to a question we have no power and very limited Internet access. Please bare with me while we will work through this. It may be a few days before we have power.

Got up fairly early this morning. A member from Norwalk, OH had called yesterday asking if I could help him sync his carbs and I said sure, come on by. So he was here about 10:00 this morning and we got the carbs synced. Then of course the yard needed mowing so I spent about 4 or 5 hours doing that. Absolutely beautiful day. So I finished the yard and came in the house to change clothes and take a little ride and no sooner had I gotten ready than one HECK of a thunderstorm rolled in. Checked the weather and they were warning of hail and winds up to 60 MPH. So much for riding. Most of it has blown through now but it's still raining. Small tree limbs all over the place but nothing major. Oh well....maybe tomorrow.

Are you okay? Just saw the news and it looked like your area really took a big hit this morning with the storms that moved through. Did you have any hail damage to your vehicles or broken windows. We had some real high winds and lost some more tree limbs, and the power was out for about 7 hours today, but no damage to the house.

Has anyone ever experienced the shifter on their first gen feel sorta flexy or mushy on the down stroke? I just dosnt seem to have a solid stop feeling when stepping down on the lever. It seems to shift ok but I have become nevous that I might over rotate the shifter and go beyond the limits of the linkage as it happened one time a while back. When this happens the lever winds up just sort of hanging there pointing at the ground. Any experience or fix information is appreciated before I start to tear things down.
