OK. I have absolutely no experience with a stator going bad on my Venture Royale and I have no idea what to look for if a problem is developing. I've heard that on a Gold Wing, when the stator goes out, everything goes out. You're basically dead in the water. I have no idea if that is typical with this bike or not. Here's what I've experienced today. I had to run to the parts house to get some new brake pads for the wife's Geo. Everything went as clockwork. I fred up the bike, drove to the Zone, got the parts, and driv back. I went back out to fire the bike up about four hours later. The bike turn once, then started clicking. I had to use the battery charger to get it fired up. I got it running again and driv it to the cars wash so's I could clean it up a bit. Got done, tried to fire it up, it turned twice and quit. Had to call the wife out to jump start me (I ain't pushin' it). I got it fired back up and took it for an investigative ride. Once the RPM's get over 2 G's, it shows to be charging just below the 3/4 mark on the voltmeter (well above the 12 mark). If I let it idle, the voltmeter drops to just above the yellow mark (well below the 12 mark). When the engine is running 2 G's and above, the voltmeter stays just below the 3/4 mark and does not fluctuate. So what could have caused my problem? Is the stator trying to go bad? The previous owner also had replaced the original battery with one from a Gold Wing. As a result, I have no place to stick the special battery sensor tube. Could this be where my problem lies? Do I just need to get out and ride the bike some more to keep the battery charged up?

Well, my kisan chargeguard has apparently died. I've had it for 2 or 3 years with no problems on my Venture before it died. I've been installing stuff for the past 2months on Saturdays on my new to me, 05 vstrom, so I've had the bike in my Honda charger. I want an ammeter and voltmeter (digital), but I haven't seen anything out there. What do you guys use to monitor current draw/voltage? Doug

Hello all, This is my first forum and I am proud to say that I made an 1987 Venture Royale my first bike. The bike was purchased from a friends cousin. I bought it last year (2008) however, I have had nothing but problems with it. The bike sat for 5 years in a garage. When I started it up for the first time, it ran rough but I (and the owner) figured it just needed a tuneup from sitting. Long story short, my buddy found it running on 3 cylinders. He found a couple pinholes in the "bladders"? on top of the carbs. I ended up buying 4 new aftermarket carb "bladders" and they were all cleaned and setup. NEXT PROBLEM: THE ONE THAT IS FRUSTRATING ME AND MY MECHANICAL FRIENDS. I bought a brand new battery and made sure it was charged correctly, etc. PROBLEM: I can ride the bike everyday for about 3 - 5 days then I have to recharge the battery. My electronics buddy has used a voltmeter all over this bike and we can't find anything wrong. He has checked the grounds.......everything. The problem is that it is so intermettent. Sometimes I get even 5 or 6 days before I have to recharge the battery. He checked everywhere to see if something was "on" slowly draining the battery when the bike was turned off. He found nothing. The voltmeter on the bike and handheld voltmeter shows it charging around 13-14 volts when the bike is running. One person said "maybe the voltage regulator is screwed and only working sometimes?" IF ANYONE CAN GIVE ME SUGGESTIONS OR POSSIBLITIES WITH THIS ELECTRICAL ISSUE, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I am really getting bothered by this. My wife is telling me to "get rid of it" but I like the bike too much when it's actually running properly. PROBLEM 2: Yesterday the throttle stuck almost wide open. I used the kill switch to shut it down. My buddy checked the throttle cable and found it being held together by 1 strand where it connects to the carb. TIME FOR A NEW CABLE. Thanks AltonKen

I encountered a really strange one on the road Saturday. We stopped for ggas and when I went to restart, it acted like my battery took a dump. We push started ok, but the voltmeter barely made it up to 12 volts. About a half hour down the road I just happened to notice that my Hi/Low beam switch was halfway inbetween the 2 settings, so I reset it. Almost immediately the voltmeter went up above 12 volts, and the problem was solved. Fine and dandy, but yesterday I smelled a very faint burnt electrical smell, and looked, and sure enough the darnn switch was halfway inbetween again, same basic symptom. Put switch back and everything is beautiful again. I may be accidently hitting the switch when clutching as we have been doing a lot of twisties these last 2 days... Just wanted to make you aware of a potential problem source!

I was wondering around Wal-Mart today looking at clearance items. They had a Minnkota digital battery gauge for $9.00. It was designed to touch one probe to the hot and one to the ground to test a battery. I opened it up and soldered a red and a black wire into the right places, hooked it up to that worthless outlet under the seat and velcroed it to the tank bib. I now have a digital voltmeter with LED lights for $9.00. I had been wanting one so I could tell if I was overloading the system when I was using my electric vest and gloves with the passing lights but I didn't want to spend as much as a system like the Kuryakin costs. The Minnkota was built to monitor a trolling motor.

I want to acquire a voltmeter that I can use on my scoots. What would those of you that already have one recommend? Terry

Ya'll may recall my brand new 07 RSV was not holding a charge. I got to the dealer on SAT where they installed a new batt -- and I followed the sageful advice of this forum -- had a Kury voltmeter installed. Here are the results: SAT 10 FEB - Rode from dealer to home, 25 miles - Voltmeter had 1 solid green light - No Heated gear, no passing lamps - Hooked up batt tender -- went to 80% immediately - Took 2.5 hrs to go to 100% SUN 11 FEB - Rode 50 miles - With Heated jacket & gloves - No passing lamps - 1 Solid green light on voltmeter - STOPPED & FUELED - Turned on Passing lamps & ran heated gear - Voltmeter went into FLASHING green then into AMBER - Turned off heated gear - Voltmeter went back to 1 solid green - Turned on hi beam (passing lamps on too) - Voltmeter maintained 1 solid green - Turned off lamps & hi beam - Turned heated gear back on - Voltmeter stayed solid green for last 47 miles Hooled up to battery tender -- went solid green in just under 20 minutes So....darn it....it's true you cannot run jacket, gloves & passing lamps. Thnx to all who helped me. So I can add one more thing to what I miss about the Gold Wing -- power. DREBBIN
