Vibration reduction of Instrument Cluster on 83-85 Venture. I have experienced a lot of vibration / bouncing of my instrument cluster on my 83 Venture when riding on rough roads. I recently had the cluster off of the bike and found that the two brackets that mount the cluster to the fairing sub frame had excessive play in them. There is a rubber grommet over a shoulder stud at two points on each bracket for vibration dampening. I placed a new 3/8” washer between the existing washer and bracket to reduce the free play in the brackets. The 3/8” washer will fit over the shoulder of the stud allowing the bracket to slightly compress the grommet some more. The existing washer is replaced back over new washer and will only allow the nut to be tightened until contact with the shoulder of the stud. When the washer is placed correctly and the bracket is bolted back on the cluster, the threads of the stud will be about even with the back of the 10 mm nut when tightened. With this modification in place, the vibration of the cluster has been significantly reduced. There is still some flexing of the cluster that will absorb road vibration, but not nearly as much as before. The 4 conductor connector in the1st picture is for my shift position lights. The mounting bracket for the cluster is removed in this picture. The mounting studs for it are to the top left and bottom right of the electrical connector. The second picture shows where I placed washers. Gary

Noticed this weekend....the front end/handlebars have quite a bit of vibration on all but the smoothest roads. Is this another venture quirk? My guess is poor balance of front wheel or slop in steering head section...sound about right? Haven't checked either yet...but new tires coming Thursday. That and some dynamo beads should eliminate any balance issues. Looks like 9000 miles on original 404's

Hi, i am interested in a Royal star 96, is not in optimal condition but is cheap. I like challenges but would like to know what are the know problems i can find out so i can look for them. Ive seen that the 99 and up are a little higher (better ground clearence) than the older one, is it possible to rise the older version? i am a little concern about clearance. I live in a high mountain country. Is possible to adapt the air suspension form the newer models... i like that too. Can someone tell me what is the normal MPG that this bike does? how long will a tank last. I usually do large trips and with harleys and they have a 200 miles tank... I appreciate any help given to make my mind about this bike. I also have the chance for a Road Star, but like this one better (less vibration). Thanks!!

Currently doing the second gear major and planning on solid motor mounts for the re-install. Is there a downside to the delrin mounts vs solid metal? They claim to be heat tolerant and provide all the advantages of solid mounts without the vibration. Sounds good but I'd like to hear from some who are using them. Thanks for all the good advice so far...

I have started to notice that at idle and only when hot, a dry metallic type rattling noise is coming from the area of my clutch cover accompinied by a slight vibration. I'm thinking clutch but before I pull it apart I am wondering if this could be an indication of more issues that I may find inside. Anyone Else ever run into this?

I have noticed a droning vibe when accelerating -- equivalent of what I would call a driveshaft vibration on a car. If I let off the throttle, it immediately goes away. Obviously difficult to describe in words, but let's call it a brrrr....rrrrr....rrrrr that increases with speed, but only when on the throttle (anything above a "light" acceleration). While I was changing the dogbones, I spun the back wheel around in the air, didn't feel anything loose, didn't notice any kind of looseness in the bearings (wheel mounted). From my search, I didn't note any common problems as such, so I'm looking for any wisdom on a place to start. Bike is new to me, has done it since day one for me, tires are pretty new, bike has about 32k miles and appears to have been well maintained and not abused. Thanks, Iz

Newbie here... I just bought an '07 RSTD and LOVE it!!!! In the past i have had a couple of Shadows and, most recently a Vulcan Classic. All were great bikes but vibrated too much for the Mrs to ride with me (arthritis in the hips). I bought the RSTD as i had heard that the vibration was minimal with the V4. Personally, I don't feel much but she still does. I've been reading here about the carb sync and I'm planning to do that but I'm wondering if the pipes have anything to do with it. It came with BUBs. Would stock pipes be smoother (albeit, quieter)? Thanks for any help and, sorry for the rambling!!!

I have just purchased a 99 Royal Star Venture. It is loaded and looks great. Has 43,000 miles and runs smooth at idle. It has a vibration when under load (riding) and goes away when I reduce the throttle. I am coming off a 2002 Road Star from the past 3 years and have only had the new bike out a couple of times and am not used to it. Has anyone had the same issue or can share a similar experiance? srm.

At certain rpm's the antenna on the right side starts to vibrate so loud is sounds like the rear right speaker is blown. There appears to be just enough play in the spring loaded doo-hicky that lifts up to allow the antenna to fold forward it allows vibration. Has anyone had this problem they've fixed without having to changeout the antenna's?

I'm not a new member, but a first time poster. I have spent the last six months soaking up information from this forum but haven't run across this topic. I bought a 1999 venture in September. I like the bike very much, but something about it is driving me crazy. When I ride 70 mph I get 30 mpg. When I run 80-85 mph I get 40-42 mpg. I like 40-42 the best.It has aftermarket mufflers and the AIS is plugged. That's the extent of what I know about the bike. Synchronizing the carbs haven't made a difference. If I'm doing it correctly. Changed the plugs twice. I'm pretty sure I know how to do that. The bike seems to run smoother(no mirror vibration) at higher speeds(very little vibration) at slower speeds, but I have no problem with how it runs at slower speeds except for the millage. Suggestions greatly appreciated. The wifey is starting to have questions. This the the best forum I've ever belonged to. Thanks Richard

I recently posted another thread describing my 4424 mile ride to Michigan, towing my Harbor Freight trailer. Towing the trailer was largely a non-event. It felt very smooth behind me, and didn't impact me but for a couple hard stops where I felt the mass pushing me. The hubs always felt cool to the touch. I did have several issues that I would like resolved before my next trip in September. The first is a vibration. The contents of the trailer wore very fast. I had the shell of my wife's helmet wear off, exposing the inside. (I will replace it now) Our air mattress wore a hole; I guess it touched the very long bolts inside the trailer. (I need to cut them off, since they are probably jutting out a good half inch.) Drysacks look thin and worn. Pots and pans have shiny places, etc. The locks vibrated apart--twice! I had to replace them on the road. What causes vibration like that? Second, the tires were bald and showing cord by 2000 miles. (see photo) I had to replace them in the rain in Marquette. The Wal*Mart people wouldn't touch the trailer, but they did lend me tools to do the job efficiently. I was back on the road inside 45 minutes. Now, my new tires look almost the same. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4142/4828385750_ce7696deed.jpg The guy at the Wal*Mart tried balancing the tires. They zeroed out despite the small size, but used 2.5oz on one tire, and 2.25oz on the other! I thought the out-of-balance caused the vibration, but that I still got vibration on the remainder of the ride. (Things inside got even more worn.) What causes this wear pattern? I was under inflated leaving home, and the guys at Wal*Mart made sure they were at manufacturer specs before they gave me the tires. Still, they are worn and I need new tires. I did pull at 70mph almost all the time. The last issue I blame on the Oklahoma construction. My license plate was almost literally torn off the trailer. The left corner was gone, including the bolt, and the right side was cracked and about to come off. I hit a "bump" at a bridge on a resurfacing project, and I think perhaps the trailer was severely tossed. Oh, and with the Wal*Mart inflation, the trailer bounced a lot. Any ideas? Should tires need replacing every 2000 miles?? Dave

Here is a link to a new style of lockwasher we are looking at at work. They are better than split washers and nylock nuts. The salesperson has a vibration stand that shows how clamping force goes down with vibration using the other types of locking devices. These Nord-Lock washers actually increase clamping force when they loosen. I have not used them on my bike as of yet but plan on it when Fastenal starts stocking them at work. http://www.nord-lock.com/

frankd's post has got me a little spooked about this so I'm going to run it up the flag pole for ideas. My 03 roadstar has developed a front end vibration that feels almost like a grinding. It's only there when the bike is straight up and moving around 30 mph. If I lean at all, the vibration goes away. I recently put on new Pirelli tires, about 300 miles before the vibration started. In looking at the tire I don't see anything obvious that would cause it. I checked all the calipers and the axle when I changed the tire. I'm concerned that something is going bad in the wheel. It seems like it's getting worse, but I may just be looking for it. Any ideas?

Since I replaced my rear brakes last week, I am getting a clicking sound when I apply my brakes. It's kind of like haing a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle (Hush, Yammer). It's not quite that loud, but I can hear it. I already tore it back down, and everything looks like it should. I am thinking it is just pad vibration. The pads are EBC HH sintered. Anyone else experience this?

Pulled trailer for first long distance the other day. Noticed at about 65-70 mph had a vibration in bike. Gone through bearings, it is a HF trailer. Not real sure if it ain't in the engine, seemed to do it worse when pulling a grade. What do ya'll think problem might be. Had about 25# tongue wieght.

AS was suggested, I tried get a feel for my vibration issue I talked to the dealer today. They said it would be a 1hr to 1 1/2 hr to do the job. I was trying to get an idea if it's under warranty...nothing said to that. I also was told that my vibration issues would not likely be solved by a carb sync. What say yea all?

very light vibration at 70 and up is this something to be concerned about?

Ok I thought I could fix it myself, so I kept putting off asking here. I've developed a vibration in my '05 RSTD. I can feel it in the grips, the tank and the floorboards. I asked for help syncing the carbs and was helped by Ken (slick97spirit). He was nice enough to do it for me and show me how to do it. It seemed better for a few days, and the got worse again. I bought my own carb sync tool and have checked it a few times. They are still in sync. I changed the oil, I have new tires, changed the plugs, and have checked for anything loose on the bike. It definitely feels like it's in the engine, and only does it a certain RPMs for instance in 3rd at about 40 to 55 MPH. I have also ran some Sea Foam through it a time or two. It only has about 10K on it and at this point I'm ready for any suggestions I can get. I'm not a mechanic, but I can do whatever needs to be done. I am back riding after a 20 year hiatus, and I'm probably overlooking something simple. TIA, Jim
