I changed out my rear tire this week after 11,200 miles, and it was the poorest performance on a rear tire I've had in 4 years. I'm a big fan of the ME880, and I've always gotten 15K+ miles from them, and significantly more on the front tire (my current front tire has 22K on it, and still has very good tread). I'm wondering if the combination of more long distance trips over the last 9 months, greater weight on the back (between riding two up and/or carrying heavier luggage for longer distances), and especially the more excessive heat conditions we've had this year on our trips are all playing into this poorer-than-average mileage I got this time around on the rear tire. Or maybe I just got a sub-standard tire back there to start with last time around. The date stamp on it was 5110, so it wasn't a very old tire when installed in September of 2011. I always keep 40 - 42 psi in the rear, along with 25 to 30 psi in the shock, so those variables are pretty consistent. Is there any intel on overall motorcycle tire performance with heat as a variable? I've Googled the subject, and there's not much out there.

Since today is Nurse's Day, I thought I would say thanks to all the Nurses in our group. Also, after being a nurse in a school district for 21 years and a RN for much longer than that, I have decided to retire. I am very excited about it. I hope to get to take a lot of motorcycle trips and spend much more time doing those projects at home that never seemed to get done. And possibly not get so stressed over unimportant things in life. Ah it will be so nice. Yama Mama:223:

Have recently decided to put a stop on all of my discretionary spending... Will be dedicating it to essential needs and of course trips on the bike... No pontoon boats or new cars...

I have a 99 RSV with 02 California sidecar, new to me as of April 2011 The bike had 14,000 miles when I bought it, and only 16,000 now. Friends are planning a 2 week trip to Arizona this summer, about 5,000 +/- miles, and I would really like to join them. They are driving new HD's. I plan on making several trips before this to get used to distance driving. (more than the 1 to 3 hour jaunts I've been on so far) So the question is...........and I understand there are many variables..........do you think the bike will make it? Thanks in advance! MJ

So I thought I'd continue my search into automatic bikes... I've looked at the can-am spyders, ridleys, and the suzuki gs450ga from the 80's I can't really find alot of info on the automatics. Wanting something that is comfy on trips, could be triked and good for around town. It will be sometime before we could invest in it but hey if we know better what to hunt for makes it easier.

The main features I want are the navigation and the MP3 player. Is the 550 my best bet? I really don't think I will use features like loading in trips, etc.

Just listed my Venture in the classifieds. I think I am giving up touring.. since I was sick in the hospital two years ago I have had tons more trouble with my sinuses and pollen and junk in the air affect me much more, I often find myself with light head aches needing to take sinus meds, and with or with out the meds I am often light headed. I just don't feel safe taking long trips on bike anymore. I also have my Sportster listed, but if I sell the Venture I will probably keep the Sportster for around town and short trips. At this point I plan on switching to a sports car of some sort.

Are there ANY US members near the east end of Lake Ontario willing to help me out. I'm thinking I want to leave my bike trailer at your place for a couple of weeks, during which time I will take it apart. Then I will import trailer "parts" in 2 different trips. Anybody willing to help?

The wife is bugging me to ride on her own . I have a Suzuki 1400 intruder collecting dust in the garage. The wifes not big or strong enough to ride it, but could ride it if it was triked w/ a 4 wheel kit. Since we would still 2 up on long trips, I don't want to pay the bucks and am sure I could build one if I can come across some information. Has anyone built one or can direct me to pictures or info. Anything would be helpful. Thanks Richard

Okay I know this exist but can't seem to find it. My better half and I are taking two long trips this year. Both are approx 2000 miles each way. We plan to break it up into 3 days then 2 weeks of riding the 3 days back and 1 to recoup before going back to work. Not that any of that has anything to do with my question but I am getting very excited about the trips. My question is this: I have a Garmin (older one) 2730, and a Nuvi. Is there a program that besides gives routing but will accept input as to how far to space fuel stops and suggest stations around that area. IE I will want to refuel every 225 - 250 miles. (I have a 27 gallon tank but only get about 11-12 mpg when towing the bikes. (sucks) So my range is a bit over 300 miles per tank but don't want to push it.I can find the info with Mapquest but it is a real pain. Is there a better way?

Id love to have a small vespa typwe scooter as our town is really small and a helmet is not required. Just thinking outloud.

Although I've been riding for many years, I haven't done many "long" trips on the bike and the ones I did do was with my dad and brother...we just stopped at rest stops and slept on the ground for the night. Now that I've got a real touring bike, the wife and I are wanting to do more trips...Since I'm new to this site and to this kind of traveling I had an idea but not sure if it's been tried, being done currently, or just stupid... How many would be interested (or maybe you are currently doing it) with opening your house to traveling bikers? I'm thinking of the money we could save on a 5 day trip if we had a "host family" we stayed with at each of our stops...Would also be able to meet new people and make new friends. What I was thinking was you just post your route along with days of travel, then anyone within about a 30-50 mile of each stop could volunteer their home...We could even have a list of "host families" with locations so people could plan their trips with those stops in mind... What do you guys think? Would something like this work?

My friend and I will be spending about 4-5 days touring the Shenandoah Valley from our base in McGaheysville, VA. Looking for some good side trips even as far as the Chesapeake Bay area. Our wifes are on their own trips and we're looking for some quality Bike time. Any good suggestion for stops, food, etc? We will probably spend a day on the Blue Ridge (Skyline Drive), then whatever strikes us. I'm coming from Lower AL and will meet him in Chattanooga. I may ride from Chattanooga depending on the weather or will trailer to The Summit at Massanutten in VA and ride from there. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I installed a cigarette lighter on my 93 Royale. I inserted an inline fuse between it and the battery connection and used a 30amp mini fuse. Every once in a while it pops the fuse, some times two fuses in a row and then maybe 4 or 5 trips before it blows another fuse. ANy Ideas on how to keep from blowin fuses? Thanks BIG HACK

I have a 2005 RSTD and I bought an intercom for it last November. I bought it so Karen & I could talk on longer trips. So far We've only taken 2 long trips. Once to Daytona in November, and we just got back from Ohio. So far we've had to send the intercom unit in for replacement, and on this week's trip we were close enough to just stop at Sierra Electronics where we bought the intercom, and had both headsets replaced because the speakers went out. The people at Sierra are nice enough, but it's a real inconvenience to have it not work when you need it. Did I just get a lemon, or is this brand just junk?

What kind should I get, Money is secondary, not that I'm rich, but I don't want to spend $200.00 and find out I've spent it foolishly

I'm contemplating picking up a Coleman grill/stove to use when camping. It won't neccesarily be used much on motorcycle trips, since it's fairly good size (and it's just easier to hit a DQ local to the area ), but for trips where I'll be sitting in one place for a couple days. This one has both a grilling area, a stove, and a griddle to cook those morning pancakes. The reviews seem promising, and the price is the cheapest I've found it anywhere. Wondered if anyon ehere had some personal experience. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8223654

Sometimes a plan just does not come together. This has been a wet spring and I have been working every weekend trying to get caught up.The 89 is not ready,99 still on the lift, and nothing has had service, oil change, etc. This darn creek has taken away the mood for riding. Hopefully we will have a dry month of June for the Skid Inn. Ramona has been working 6-7 days a week for 1-2 months and I been out of state on a few trips for work. So we will be caging it to Maint Day. Maybe I can talk her into loading down the back with peanut butter pie.Forecast for tonight freeze warning and 30 degrees.

Is there anyway to reduce the tension in the clutch lever making it easier to pull? I'm starting to get arthritis in the hand and it's making it more difficult. Can't give up those long trips.

I may have not found the obvious but I do need some info on where you stay on extended trips. Because I am still the primary care-giver for my 91 year old mother, overnight bike trips are out of the question. However, when she passes I am planning on an extended (multi-month) trip through the western USA, travelling back roads and visiting places I have never taken the time to see before. This leads me to the question: What to do about lodging? Yes, I could stay at motels but averaging $75/night that is $2250/month. Manageable, but not how I want to spend my limited retirement funds. Yes, I could buy one of the trailers/pop-up campers but that is not something I want to haul behind me. And yes, I could mooch off a few friends when available, but that is not something I am wild about doing either. So, that appears to leave 'camping' or at least some version of it as so many of you have referenced. Can anyone point me to a thread, resource, or just your advice on the details of how this works? Keep in mind this all new to me and I am not an experienced camper. (When I used to take extended trips (before care-giving) in an RV, I would pull into Interstate rest stops 3-4 nights and then an RV Park one night to get a quiet night's sleep. Somehow pulling off the road and sleeping on the ground doesn't sound all that appealing to my 68 year old carcass. I hope I am not asking a stupid or obvious question. I just haven't a clue as to how you folks do extended trips. Thanks, Oldsalt

I am looking for a light and compact half cover for the 2005 Midnight that folds up compact for use on some longer trips planned for next summer. Any suggestions on some good quality water proof half covers? Thanks

Is a publication, like a book, or mag, or something like that that gives ideas for 1-day bike trips for PA or for other areas? Right now I can't break away for longer rides, but want to take a series of day rides from the house. I know how to look at a map - just wondering if someone has put together different routes for different areas.

I know it's still about a month away, but was just wondering who makes the trip? Not being that far away, myself and a few friends will make a couple of day trips. I've been up there the last few years, hanging around the Funspot. Good parking and that's where all the vendors usually set up for the demo's.
