I'm looking for a new tent to replace the one I've had since I was in my teens. Which is a 6' dome tent. It still suits me fine when I'm alone, but my better half dosen't like it very much. She's not big on camping like I am. So I got her an air mattress to make her more comfortable, but it won't fit in my dinky little dome tent. I borrowed my parents tent a few times and depended on tents others brought with them that were big enough to put the air mattress in for the past few years. But I feel like a mooch when I do that. Due to her bad back, I need a tent that is big enough to stand up in. And big enough to sleep about 6, so we have enough room to put down two mattresses if need be and/or to put all the extra gear in out of the weather if needed to. I'm looking for a dome tent that big but not to heavy and not take up a lot of room in the trailer. I was also hoping not to spend any more than $150 - $250. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, Bill

I see a lot of members traveling all over the place. I for one would have loved to know that other then sleeping on the welcome center Between Norfolk VA and Dismal swamp state park in NC. There were members houses, near by ( a warm Bed or even a place to pop open a tent. ) would have been better then sleeping curb side. Is there a way to log in on a map, (Google maps) plot your route. and see if anyone, would offer a room or a place to drop your tent )? Like to anyone that was riding through, Vero Beach FL, my home is a VR House. I know there is a List of were people live, But I was thinking from an offering stand point, other then having to call someone, out of the blue.

Hi guys, After pitching my tent in Scooter & Karen's back yard Saturday, I believe I'm just not quite as young as I used to be. I've never needed anything under me except my sleeping bag for a good nights sleep. Unless of course I had the wife with. Then I had a queen sized, double thick air mattress in a very large tent to sleep on. But due to recent events, I find only myself in my small tent. Nope, I still haven't given up all hope for us as of yet. But any who, or is that any whom? I need suggestions for a small, good air mattress or cushion for just myself to sleep on. Small and light when stowed is a must. Or at least preferred. Thanks guys! Bill

I'm planning a trip this summer about 6 -7000 km, and with motels averaging $100/night, I think it will be cheaper to overnight at camp grounds ($23-$35/night). Now my question is; what would be a good tent to get, something quick to set up and tear down. And being 6'2" not to cramped. Thanks for any suggetions. Markus

I am riding down Friday Aug 19 afternoon/evening depending on work and am looking to see if anyone has a camp site that they would like to share/split. I have an aspen classic and normally all state parks I have been in allow us to put two tent trailers or two tents on one site. If anyone has a site to share please let me know before I try to book a site next week. Thanks looking forward to meeting new friends and seeing old ones.

Looking for pics and suggestions on loading my 2nd gen. My tent ( Catoma Solo Rider, I'll post a review after my trip) and sleeping pad are wider than the trunk rack and seem to push the antennas out, prohibiting their movement. I don't want to snap them going down the road. I will be traveling one up and plan to use the pillion seat for the tent, pad and a small cooler. Does anyone have pics of their Ventures loaded for long trips / camping? Suggestions on bungee cords, tie downs or attachment points would be appreciated. I searched but didnt come up with much. Any pics, help or suggestions would be appreciated!! Thanks and stay safe! csogbk

Ok, I know we don't have a lot of members from the Norfok, NE area but maybe someone has better access to weather information than I do. Weather channel says severe thunderstorms and high winds in that area tonight. So here's my issue. My daughter in working at a fireworks stand with friends in Norfolk, NE this weekend. We have been texting back forth over the weekend and staying in touch. She was supposed to be headed home this evening. A while ago she sent a text that the wind was coming up real bad and hail was beating the hell out of the tent. She said people had talked about a tornado. The next text was the tent had gone down and everthing was gone. That was the last text I got and no response since. Anybody able to find any info on the situation there? I'm packing up to head that way shorty if I don't hear from her soon but it's a couple hours ride up there in nasty weather. Like to know what I'm headed into. The reason I'm asking here is I am deaf and not able to jump on the phone. Thanks. Mike

Anyone recognize this little tent trailer? http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/jbmaynard/trailerandbike.jpg http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/jbmaynard/traileropen.jpg http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/jbmaynard/traileropen2.jpg http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/jbmaynard/trailerstoragearea.jpg

My wife just got me (us?) the REI Half Dome 2 for my birthday. $134.99 is hard to beat for a tent this size. Looking forward to using it this summer. Practiced a couple times putting it up. Takes maybe 10 minutes to set it up: footprint, tent, rain fly. Less time if you are fast & don't need the rain fly. Can't wait.

Since it's been a while since this has been talked about...I thought I would start another discussion to see if any "advances" have been made in TENT TECHNOLOGY. Obviously quick set-up and compactness when traveling is most important. Anything new on the TENT front. Wally

I got myself a tent trailer off Craig's earlier this week. It's a 1977 CycleCamp, and I actually got it from the original owner who has towed it all over the country on various Gold Wings. It's in decent shape and although it could use some work, it is ready to go and I got a great deal on it. I do remember CycleCamp from the early 80's, but I can't find any info on the internet on this trailer. I've already had the hitch installed for some time, I used it for mounting a large flag for Patriot Guard Missions, but I do need to do the wiring still. I'll be using it this coming weekend for an overnight camping ride up the coast to the Big Sur area. If anyone has any info on CycleCamp, I'd appreciate hearing from you. I have trailered before, but it has been a few years.

Any info on motorcycle tent camping at Martha's Vinyard. Reading up what I can about the island they seem like maybe they might not welcome motorcycles. Any one familiar with the area?

I love to camp. This past week end was a camping date for me. Found out real quickly I needed a new tent for wind and cool temps. Need some help on picking a tent that has windows and doors that can be covered. Also want a tent with rain fly that goes to the ground. Something of a 4 season type.

Warden says "Get in car and drive South!!" Leaving Fri night may stop when wheels get wet? Or anywhere in between. Great plans for this one. Go find Beach?? Budget a lot tighter for Vacation on Retirement check. I told her we could take tent. She didn't seem to like that idea?? Taking sister-in-law along. She backs the Warden up. Going to be a long trip.... I may need Meds!!!

So I was without my daughter this past weekend and had a wild hair to go camping. After getting all my gear together that I normally take (in the car) ... there was no room for me on the bike. King size Air mattress, Tent, Deep Cycle Marine Battery (have to run a CPAP to sleep at nite), etc.... I started to look at options. Most places wanted 30.00 to get a site without electric....so I still would need the battery... 40 or more for a campsite with electric (a bit high but saves me from lugging the battery) Cabins were 100+ (not going to spend 100 on a cabin for myself... might as well get a hotel room) Then I foound this place...almost right where I wanted to be camping ANYWAY. http://www.steelsteedscamp.com/ for 45 a nite... they gave me a HUGE tent with a REAL king sized bed (no air mattress) sheets (nice thread count too), electricity to my tent and all the over fluffy towels I needed for the wekend! Bob was super nice (owner / manager) They also had travel trailers for rent (A/C etc) and other tents with air mattresses (for a little less). Bathrooms were SPOTLESS. If you find yourself in central PA Up around Bucknell (williamsport / State college is close enough) give them a look for a place to stay.

I have a three room tent with the center with mesh walls and the two side rooms that can be closed up. I also have a spare full size air mattress. I am going to have my small camper for me, but if anyone would like for me to bring any of this, I will be glad to let anyone use it. RandyA

Let me start off by saying I'm having a great time. The riding has been spectacular even today when I rode in 3 hours of rain. This being Independance Day long weekend, I have had my challeges getting a camping spot but it always worked out. Night two I was deperite after getting turned away from two camp sites. I saw a farm house that was storing trailers. So I did a door knock and introduced myself and asked if I could camp by the trailers. The man said sure and called his wife who said I could even use his shower outside in his workshop for $15. I thanked them very much and set up camp. I did have to clean the shower as I don't think it had been used in over 5 years. Cob webs and moths all over, but it worked great. So here is my story of my fourth night camping at a KOA in Goodland Kansas. Let me first say that this is a very clean and well kept facility. Well this is earlier then I would like to wake up without an alarm. Real bad storm. A few times I thought the wind was either going to lift the tent off the ground or break it into pieces. I was awake when I heard noises and people at 1am. I didn't know what they where doing. My pee jug was getting full from my second time. I cautiously open the tent a little to dump it out and the ground was covered in water. Only about an inch. The people that I heard where other tenters that got flooded or their tent torn apart. They got in their truck and spinning tires to get out. I laid in bed not able to go back to sleep. The rain was so hard but the tent was doing well. The wind was what concerned me. I was afraid the tent would get damaged and I wouldn't be able to close it. There goes the next 3.5 weeks I was thinking. My mind wasn't stopping should I cut my losses or tuff it out. A lull in the weather happened. *Good time to break camp I thought. Don't be a chicken I thought. So there I laid. The storm picked up again, eaqually as bad. I checked outside by unzipping the door a few inches. Now there was 2 inches of water all over the ground. It kept comming down and blowing so hard that I thought I may damage the tent trying to put it away. At 2:15am I checked outside and there was almost 3 inches of rain water on the ground. That was it, only an inch or two more and my changing area will be under water. I started to pack things up inside the trailer so when there was a lull in the weather I would be ready to spring into action. I made a mental list of what I needed to do outside to close the tent quickly and without damaging it. There I sat bed deflated belongings packed away and waiting. 2:30, the rain slowed right down and wind wasn't so strong and gusty. Like a lion saving their cubs I was out and moving. Lucky I had my boots the trailer skirting was all under water. The gravel road was covered. No hesitation I had to act to get this tent down and closed before another wind gust would come and rip it out of my hand. I kept seeing flash news reports of times past of bad things happening in trailer parks. Everything went smooth. The tent got put away safely. I put the cargo carrier on the picknic table as the water drains thru. What a relief. I may be a chicken and over reacted, but I kept thinking it could get worse and then where would I be. It's only sleep I'm missing out on by packing up. If the weather breaks in the morning I'll set it back up to dry and sleep. If I have to stay another night that's ok too. My tent us not broken. I'm a happy camper. I'll up date you all in the morning. Dave Sent from my iPhone

I am a proud new owner of a leesurlite tent trailer http://www.leesurelite.com/ here are a couple pics of my new road accomodations Sorry I can't figure out how to attach the photos. Who said you have to be smart to ride a bike or type on a computer. I'll try again when I have more time.

Well I haven't used a tent since 1990 and Desert Shield. Now I'm thinking I may want to try it on some of my riding adventures. Any of you got any recommendations as to the type of tent I should look for?? I want something that will pack up tight because I don't have a trailer yet for my RSV. Just maybe for 2 people. Any suggestions???

Morning everyone! We just got back from a tour of the Fredricksburg area in the heart of hill country. How would everyone feel about having the Stampede there next fall? There are a couple great places to stay that offer RV, tent, and rooms in the same place. So far, the bookings are pretty open for the weekend of October 9-11. Earlier and we hit Octoberfest. Later we start running into the Luckenbach fall festival. Right now I can find rooms in the $50-$70 range and tent spots in the $10.00 area. I can guarantee great riding and food. Also a bunch of places to shop if one was so inclined. Maggie volunteered to bring the Expedition up for use as a shuttle bus if we pick here. It is about 2 hours from San Antonio by major road and about 3 or so by back roads. About 45min to an hour from the famed Three Sisters farm roads. JB

The last night of the Vogel IV /Tail of the Dragon event turned out to be quite exciting. The day began with a nice early morning ride with Blackjack to Blairsville to have breakfast with Eck, SleeperHawk and his Mechanic, 1rooster and several other VR members. Afterward we returned to Vogel to hook up with Squidley, Yammer Dan, Broken spoke, Raceman62 and Melinda for a ride over Hog Pen Gap to Suches then North up 60 to Stechoa Gap Rd. to Blairsville then back to Vogel. Then there was the BBQ dinner and the drawing for prizes and the 50/50 drawing. When Lewis called the numbers for the 50/50 drawing. My enthusiasm grew and grew as he called each digit 9-2-1-1-1-------------7, Ah Cr_p my tickets ended with 1-8, 1-9,2-0. Well anyway the money goes to a good cause. I was just sorry that half the money didn't go to my favorite charity------ME. I was however very thankful later that Raceman62 had won the first aid kit which came in handy the next day wrapping up my road rash. Thank you Raceman62 for sharing it with me and the person who donated it as a prize. As I said it came in very handy. (I did However, win the auction for the last set of Squidley running light brackets that I have wanted for a long time:)I'm sure that being the last set they will end up being a collector's item someday. After the drawing I was able to spend some quality time with John and Melinda (Raceman62race) enjoying some good conversation and adult libations. Followed by a solo swim under the stars. I then went home to my tent where I found that my tent site companion Blackjack had packed up and left. At that point there was nothing left to do but lay down for a good night's sleep with the restful music of the blue ridge mountains playing in my ears through the ear spud speakers of mp3 player. All of a sudden (at approximately 2:30 am) there was a loud CRASH right outside of the tent window by my head where Blackjacks tent would have been. I jumped up from my slumbers and unzipped the window flap to see (by the light of the mp3 player display) my pick-a-nik basket (which had been sitting on the pick-a-nik table) had been hurled and scattered right out side of my tent. (see photos attached) At that moment I'm sure I heard a voice saying.. "Heeeeeeeey BOOBOO, screw that Pick-a-nik basket and come help me grab this cooler.... The Ranger is coming". Then there was a smaller voice replying "OK Yogi". When I finally got my tent door flap unzipped I ran out of the tent waving my MP3 player where I thought I saw (By the light of the MP3 player display) one large bear wearing gloves holding on to the pole hook next to the pick-a-nik table with a smaller bear on his shoulders removing my soft shell cooler off the hook where I had placed it earlier making it bear proof.... I thought. Realizing how naked and unarmed I was, in my underwear waving a MP3 player, :whistling:I quickly retreated to my scatterd pick-a-nik basket where I found (by the light of my mp3 player display) a pot, a large metal spoon, and my battery operated camping lantern. (see pics attached) When I got the lantern turned on, I heard two different voices giggling with a tee-he-he-he-hee and saw two bears (one large wearing gloves and one small) running into the woods carrying my blue soft shelled cooler. I used the pot and spoon as a noise maker hoping that it would startle the bears into dropping my cooler and run them off. After putting on my pants and boots, (which made me feel much braver) I was joined by my camp site neighbor who was awakened by all of the commotion. With my new found courage, illumination, weaponry and back-up camper we did a circular search in the immediate area for my cooler while being careful not to penetrate too deeply into the dark shadowed underbrush on the other side of the creek. Not finding my cooler, we returned to our respective camp sites where I managed to find my bike keys to unlock my trunk after remembering that I had been packing heat stored in my trunk (where it did me a lot of good at the time). I packed the heat in my pants pocket and went back to bed keeping my pants and boots on. I carefully placed my pot, spoon, lantern and MP3 player within convenient reach in case of an emergency and went back to sleep.... as much as I could with one eye open and one ear unplugged by the MP3 player ear spud speaker. I didn't want to unplug both ears because I knew by my more alert adrenaline filled brain that if I had to jump up again as long as one ear spud speaker was inserted in my ear the MP3 player would be dangling along side my 3rd shirt button within easy reach, in case of another emergency. Which came about an hour later. Once the crime scene had settled down and I was finally drifting back off to sleep I was again awakened by a commotion outside of the tent window. AGAIN by the light of the MP3 player display I saw the bears rummaging through the contents of the pick-a-nik basket. Grabbing the lantern, pot and spoon, (the heat still packed into my pants pocket) I ran out of the tent. Just in time to hear two different voices giggling with a tee-he-he-he-heee and see two bears ( one large wearing gloves and one small) running off into the woods carrying arm loads of Romaine dried noodles, condiments and my prized package of powdered coco, which I had been saving for a cold rainy day.:rippedhand:AGAIN! The only thing I could think of at the time was to yell at the bears as they ran off "YOU BETTER BRING BACK YAMMER DAN'S RIDING GLOVES OR HE IS GOING TO HUNT YOU DOWN AND BEAT YOU TO DEATH WITH HIS CRUTCHES". :soapbox:They didn't seemed impressed or scared because they didn't come back after that to return the gloves. I didn't get much sleep after that. Oh, I might of dozed a little until daylight, but, it's hard to sleep with one eye and ear open, and a loaded gun in your pants pocket. Once it was daylight I followed the debris trail into the underbrush where I found the remains of my cooler and contents where the marauding bears must have dined within eyesight of and within 50 feet of my tent. I must have walked within feet of the dining bears on our circular search of the area earlier that morning. Upon finding and analyzing the evidence :detective:I learned this about the marauding bears. They were evidently very smart bears due to their ability to talk and giggle. They were some what athletic due to their ability to climb on to each others shoulders to remove the cooler from the pole hook and run off into the woods carrying arms loads of stolen goods. They don't care to much for lettuce, tomatoes, whole wheat honey nut bread or pepper because they only gnawed into them but didn't eat them. They do like ham, cheese, Romaine dried noodles, salt, powdered Coco because they ate them up. They did not have a can opener because they left the can of Tuna Fish. (Dolphine safe tuna fish) BOOBOO evidently loves Duke's Mayonnaise because he must have been the one to unscrew the lid of the mayonnaise jar and lick it clean. He even licked the label off the jar. It could not have been Yogi because I don't see how Yogi could have unscrewed the lid wearing gloves. They were not Baptist and liked to party. I know this because they consumed the entire contents of the plastic container I had in the cooler which was filled with pre-mixed Gin and Tonic. They must have been Federally employed secret spy double nought bears because they left one intriguing piece of physical evidence on the pick-a-nik table. A lapel pin with the logo of the Central Intelligence Agency. I swear that all of the above is true and I can prove it by the photo evidence attached. OK I admit I did evoke poetic license and did embellish the story somewhat for entertainment value.

Do we have to make a reservation at the Hub if we are camping in a tent?

When I get more time, I will post pics of my father's day weekend with my daugther and also pup in my pup tent. In high school I was part of the explorer scouts (basically a recruiting tool for the National Guard). We did camping so I have a military pup tent (assuming Army). I haven't had it out since high school but thought it would be fun for the kids to play in. Anyway I tried setting it up and did an ok job of it. Here is where some of you might have to break out your field manuals. LOL. Is there an SOP for setting up a military pup tent? For instance in order: Poles on each end, guy line on each end, ground stakes on each corner and 2 in the middle. My problem was that there was a bow in the middle and I just imagine the ridgeline should be straight. When I post the pics, you will see what I mean. Also what was used for ground covering and guessing it isn't waterproof, so what was put over it to keep the water out? Seems like I remember a rain poncho thrown over the top or used for ground covering and just snapped the poncho to the tent. Been a long time so I don't remember anymore. I don't know if there are any variations of military pup tents but, the tent itself it 2 halves that overlap in the middle and snap together. You have 2 holes on each end for the tent poles and a loop on each end for the guy line (I think that is what the rope is called). You have 3 holes on each side for the tent stakes (really 4 on each end if you include the holes for the flaps. There are some markings on the tent that I wonder if anyone might know about or how to find some info. about it. It says DR MO W2 2PEQ. The tent pole is in 3 sections on each end and all but one is stamped 1975. The other one I don't remember the date, seems like either in the 80's or early 90's.
