  1. Moved this thread from the Watering Hole... Profiessional Input Please: I have read most of the threads regarding wiring of a Stebel Horn. I ordered one today so it will be on for a trip I am taking the end of May to Dragon/Cherohala area. I have decided to go with the "in cowling" mounting option. After reading Freebirds Tech article and others here on the forum I would like "confirmation" that I will be wiring it up correctly. 1. Mount horn vertically in cowling to frame. (Using pipe insulation to cushion per a suggestion on a thread and tie wraps) 2. Splice into hot wire from acc. plug and run wire to relay. ( Per Freebirds Tech article) (Increase size of fuse in lower fuse panel) 3. Wire from relay to horn positive. (Tech article) 4. Ground wire from horn to frame. ?????? 5. Splice into pink wire horn button and run wire to relay. (Threads tech article) What am I missing...anything. NOTE: I restored a 110 year old house here in Lynchburg. I did all restoration work "EXCEPT" electrical....Just not my thing..... Since I am under the cowling and want to keep the OEM horns active, do I need to deal with the "brown" wire everyone refers to in the mounting option on the lower right side of the bike?.... Long Tall in Lynchburg, VA
  2. I am trying to access the 1st Gen tech section and they are locked, cant get in............What gives? All of them are locked. I am going over to K-Riders to help him with his bike and wanted to acess the first gen tech section to look things up. I know most of what I need to do, but may need to fall back on it if needed.
  3. Just wanted to extend a big public thanks to Playboy for his excellent tech article on repacking the swing arm bearings on the Royal Star Venture. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=709132#post709132
  4. A big thanks to SeekerFor who sent this list to Marcarl who sent this list to me who uploaded it for you. whew.....anyway, it is a complete Yamaha parts list for the 1984 Venture. I hope that some of you find it useful. I have uploaded it to the First Gen Tech Library: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=701545#post701545
  5. Anybody thinking about installing new throttle cables on their RSV, be sure to check out the excellent new tech article submitted by SMSgt. It is very well done. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=698593#post698593
  6. Since Wally World cancelled the contract with Champion Lab, I have only one Super Tech st7317 left (2004 Yamaha Royal Star Venture). I went with this filter because you guys out there in Venture Rider world recommended it and you haven't steared me wrong yet. What do you recommend as a replacement for the Super Tech st7317?
  7. As a member of the new Dark Side VR Group I would like to see a Forum or Topic that we could exchange ideas and experiences. I think it should be open to all who are interested as some VRs go forward with their Mods. I think it should go in the Tech Talk Category.. I think the sharing of experiences will make this a safer proposition for all that are willing to try this Mod. Thanks,
  8. Friend of mine just stop by the house.... said he went to 3 of the 4 Walmart's here in Amarillo to get a super tech filter for his Goldwing. He could not find any of the filters. Ask at the counter and was told they do not carry them any more.
  9. I have opened up my float bowls on my 96 RSTD to clean the pilot jets. I figured that I should check the float levels while I was in there. Unfortunatly the older 2nd gens have different carbs than what V7Goose has in the tech section. I have downloaded the manual and I can't seem to find a measurment. Any help would be appreciated.
  10. Hey all, Does anyone have either first hand knowledge or an opinion on http://racetech.com/html_files/venture.html? The new spring is fairly straight forward, but this cartridge emulator concept is new to me. http://www.racetech.com/images/FEGV2page6L.jpg I've been chatting with the main tech at my local independent bike shop about improving my bikes handling. In addition to leveling links (which I've got ready to go on), he recommends both springs and this emulator. The shop works on all types of bikes, but is most known for sport bike\track bike work. Any comments would be appreciated. What do y'all think? Cheers, Dan P.S. Not sure that I need my venture to every be "flic-able"
  11. What I found owning 2 30 year old bikes, you can't find a dealer to work on anything older than 2000. For anyone in Hampton Roads Virginia area Sunrise Cycle in Norfolk will work on them. Well only on the off season (Sept to February). http://www.sunrisecycle.com/ Today I did my progressives & I had to go out & get fork oil. I asked the parts Mgr a question about how to do something & he walked me into the service area to talk to a tech. The tech not only answered my question but went through the entire procedure with me. (All I bought was fork oil) That's when I asked him if they worked on old bikes, expecting a "no" answer. It's good to find a dealer willing to work on any year make of what they sell!
  12. I had bookmarked the Watering hole and 1st Gen Tech forum when I first joined. Today I wandered into the read only 1st Gen tech library forum and found a wealth of information.... Guess I need to spend some more time cruisin' through this place....
  13. I am going to upgrade my stator soon. I can't seem to find a "how to" in the second gen tech section. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks,
  14. Does anyone have a list of the affected serial numbers of TSB 2007015. The tech bulletin about the improperly torqued head bolts. Thanks
  15. Its a long story with boring details but since you clicked on this thread, here you go: I signed up for Uverse on the 7th of December. This is Uverse internet, not digital Uverse TV. Uverse, for those who dont know, is the AT&T service that uses fiberoptic cables run in the alleys and streets and then a drop of copper pairs, (usually your existing phone line), to the house. In brand new affluent neighborhoods they run fiber directly to the house. I currently had DSL service at the 3 Mbps tier. Not super fast, but fast enough for me. It runs me about $35 a month. The Uverse sales rep offered to bump me up to 12 Mbps and drop the price to $25 a month for a year, with free install and free modem. I said 'sign me up!' Famous Last Words. We scheduled the install for the 20th of December, due to conflicts with work and other obligations we all have that time of year. (plus that allows time for the self-install modem to arrive) The technician will show up between 8 am and 8 pm. Ok...set aside a whole day and hang around the house and wait. The tech never showed....but my DSL internet stopped working that morning. Hours on hold, many calls made, rescheduled for the 28th of December. Another day waiting around my house all day, and again, the tech never showed. Still no internet, and still no Uverse. More time spent on hold and customer service is apologizing all over themselves, and promising it wont happen again...and I reschedule once again: January 4th, Wednesday. On the 2nd, i get a text on my phone confirming a tech WILL be there on the 4th. I left all the doors and gates standing wide open, all day. I am there all day. NO ONE SHOWS UP! Ok, I'm pissed! I call that night (hold for an hour)and they PROMISE there will be a tech here Friday. The phone rep even gives me the maintenance dept phone number. And the central office is only 5 blocks from my house. I live near the middle of this little town of 25,000 people. I'm NOT hard to find! I finally get a call Friday afternoon. This guy is 'subbing' for the primary tech, who I find out is a GIRL, and she is out for a family situation. Huh? For 2 weeks? So this guy is here in 2 minutes, tests the line, hands me a modem, we plug it in, POOF! data detected! I log in, sign up, and wow...instant internet! its MAGIC! He says they were supposed to send a modem 3 weeks ago...I said yeah the phone support people told me three times it was on its way. It never showed. He also apologized in person for the delays and the service, but said he was a substitute and the gal that normally does all this has been 'busy'...whatever that means. Well the end result is now my internet is working, and the speed is showing to be around 11 Mbps now....and the webpages and videos are loading QUICK! So...I spent about 17 days with no internet, no Netflix, no Hulu, no Youtube, no streaming music. I was able to so some limited surfing and email using the local 3G service on my ipad, and iphone, but its just not the same. Now the funny thing is: I had texted this female friend that 'my internet was down'...i get a couple of texts back and then she quips, 'well I thought macs didnt break!'...she knows I'm a mac person. I texted back that its the service, not the computer, the mac is fine. Just no internet working to the house. She wrote back a simple: 'oh' Shes a blonde, and a cute one at that, but thats the same thing as thinking that a nice expensive Sony Plasma TV will work even if there is no signal to it! I guess to some people the words 'internet is down' means the computer quit. Oh well. Things are getting back to normal here, and I got caught up on some shows I watch. I dont have cable TV and we are 50 miles from the nearest TV market so I only get about 3 channels of network crap, so this is kindve a big deal for me. Its my main source of entertainment, news, weather, sports, movies, email and so on. After all this, I can say its hard to imagine going back to the days of no internet. Is that what our great, great, great grandparents said about hot and cold running water? or electricity? Wow. Happily surfing again.
  16. Have you ever used a machinist knife edge? I attached a picture. I ask because I recently found a set and I have never used one before. My dad has been a die maker since the early 70's and he has never seen one either. I will probably sell it, but the tech geek in me wants to know how it works first.
  17. Well, I finally got around to checking my valve clearances on Biggal this past weekend. I'd been putting it off all summer and this week I had some vacation time so I used it to catch up on some long overdue preventive maintenance. Many thanks go out to all the discussions on this website and MD 's at Don's the last 2 years, as well as Freebird's posting about getting the carbs off in the Tech section. V7Goose's article article in the Tech section was my main instruction book for doing the valves. I also used your procedure for setting the floats on the carbs. Thanks Goose. Dingy has a very good spreadsheet in the Tech section as well and it came in very handy. Thanks Gary. You made working with metrics a lot easier and keeping up with what's shims are in each location. After changing the coolant, as well as the oil, filter, sparkplugs, tightening the steering head bearings, and syncing the carbs (didn't really need that) she runs like a champ again. I'd say I've got my 12 dollars worth of help and more!! Thanks to everyone again!
  18. Cleaning the windshield today, I noticed one side is very loose (broken mount). Warranty is good until Feb 28, 2012. I know there is a "fix" in the tech section, but will Yamaha do anything about it under warranty?
  19. Put the 06 in shop today days before the warranty is up. My radio control head has been locking up. I took it there about a month ago and they could not duplicate problem. When i took it today It locked up right there in front of the service writer and a tech. both siad it looked like it would need a new control head. This is the first troubles i have had with my venture. Knock on wood
  20. I posted last week about the creaking noise coming from the rear. My option was to get it done on warranty or do it myself. Not sure of myself I printed the info from the tech section and tackled it myself. Not a bad job and it will be easier next time. It took me a couple of hours but it is 60 miles to the dealer so that would mean two trips and four hours on the road. I will finish up tomorrow night in about 15 minutes. My torque wrench only goes to 75 lbs and the axle calls for 140 lbs. Any ideas short of buying another wrench. Thanks to those who take pictures and help with the tech forum! I love this site!
  21. I was thinking of buying a Clymer Manual, but after thinking about it do I really need one? What I mean is, can a Clymer manual do any more or have more info then what I can find here? So far I've never not been able to get a tech question answered! And sometimes there's even a little humor involved? So what do you think do I need a Clymer Manual?
  22. Having searched the tech section, I just want to clarify something. Having greased the splines on the end of the drive shaft I've gone to insert it back in the drive shaft tube. After a little jiggle it went in and i was able to loosly fit the four acorn nuts prior to doing the alignment process as reccommended in the tech section. My question is (probably a dumb one) is, is it possible for the end of this shaft to miss its connnection with the UJ and simply lay in the bottom of the tube? I think its gone in but not sure. Cheers
  23. Well after years as the lead Automation assembly Tech I have taken a new position as a Service Tech, going through some training and trying to get all my travel perks signed up for before I hit the road. Its a strange feeling changing jobs after 13 years but it feels right.

    Super tech and Rotella

2 Wally worlds later I found the rotella in the white bottle, quarts not a gallon jug and super tech filter. This has been or occuring here alot, these are super stores too, was wondering if anyone else was having this problem?
  25. Hey folks I am in the process of changing my rear tire. I got it off the bike and thought I would clean and grease the drive hub, splines and pins. I have a tube of Super Tech Moly grease from Walmart in the shop and was wondering if this will do the trick or should I go get something else. thanks
