So I started looking for my proverbial gas smell on my 89. Couldn't find anything wet or seeping. Decided to sync the carbs. I also checked the vacuum caps that I had to remove to hook up the sync hoses. I checked them by sucking on them and letting them stick to my lip. The last one I checked would not create suction. I could not find a crack, or leak, but it would not create suction. So, I replaced it with one off of the 87. after syncing and the new cap, boy...it runs smooth. Here is the question: When syncing the 89, the Carbtune reading was close to 32 on the scale. Is there a level/reading that it should be ? What/how is that adjusted ? I was able to balance the carbs and the sides. I was also playing with my 87 and even though I still have major carb issues on that one, The reading was around 20 on the scale. Now I know that the 87 could, and probably is not an accurate reading due to the carb issues, but it got me thinking about the readings.

pilot jets and sync'ing ?
59ndroy posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've read lots of different threads about turning pilot jet screws from 1 3/4 turns out all the way to 3 turns. So, how can you tell what "your happy number" of turns out is? What is the deciding factor? Will this effect gas mileage or is it something else? Part 2 of this thread: I'm trying to get the mileage up out of the 31 range. I've changed plugs, Seafoamed 7 tankfuls, tried sync'ing 3 times and have finally got her to idle and run decent. But it's still touchy with the choke in the cold mornings. The other question is when sync'ing, at what rpm should it be? Idling or 2000 rpms? And when I think the sync is complete, (I do crack throttle during adjustments) my levels are constantly changing after that when I crack the throttle and let it settle back to idle. I mean everything gets wacky again. Never a consistant reading on any cylinders. I am a less than a year member of this site(Its been Great). I will be leaving home tomorrow (If weather Permits), from Southeast Missouri and going to the Cincinnati area(to see my son). I have a 2006 rstd with 7800miles on it and would like some help syncing the carbs. I would gladly drive out of route to get this done and I would make it worth the time. Thanks if you can help.....The bike runs great, but I am having a little vibe in floor boards and tank. Thanks Larry:cool10::cool10:

I would like to borrow one to check my carbs. I am from Terre Haute but will probably be riding to Indianapolis on Thursday so if anyone around those areas has one let me know. Also if you have experience syncing carbs and wouldn't mind helping me I would REALLY appreciate it as I have never done it before. I would even buy you a steak dinner as a thankyou!

I am Syncing my carbs on my 85 Venture Royale. Got 1&2 dialed in and 3&4. Now according to the link here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=495 It says to then sync 2&4 on the first Gen which is what mine is. Now the problem is that #2 is pulling way more vacuume than 4 and I cannot even get it close. Anyone else ever had this and if so, what do I need to look at. Thanks Guys.

I am looking to buy a good but yet reasonably priced shop tach. I have looked at Harbor Freight but some of you have said they don't function well. I would be using mostly for Carb Syncing on my RSV. What is everyone else use? Thanks

I'm down here in Kissimmee visiting my Bro Hulk who's in Oceola Medical Center recovering from a Triple Valve job on his heart... He's a former Member here who's not real PC or WWW savy and seldom posted... I've been riding his 2000 RSV around which has been siting since Bike Week and had old gas in it... I've run a couple of cans of Sea Foam through it and now have new gas in it and it is running better but... I have to drag the clutch a little and over rev it a little to get it to take off from a stop without knocking/pinging... Could this be a syncing problem... It sometimes pings when reving in neutral.. He has never had the carbs synced and I'd like to fix it for him so it'll be ready to roll when he recovers... I'm down here until Wed. unless the hurricane changes our flight plans. Anybody got any ideas??

I've just started to notice a backfire when I downshift hard. I haven't done anything to the carbs so I thought it mights have something to do with that. Can this generally be fixed by syncing?
