Had my new Avon VenomX 150/90-16 80H installed today. My last one wore flat in the middle due to me running it with to much air pressure. Why did I run to much psi is beyond me. Call it a $145.00 mistake. 54 to 56 psi and it turned into a car tire...totally square. It started riding so bad that I thought my swingarm was worn out. Had swingarm checked while tire was off and no play at all...perfect. New mount and balance and the old girl tracks true as ever. Bring on the weather...we are ready to roll once again! Thinking about a Thanksgiving ride to Myrtle Beach tomorrow...gonna be a beautiful day here in South Carolina.

Ive looked all over the site and I cant find information on adjusting the swingarm bearings on the RSV 2gen and I have misplaced my shop manual CD. Does anyone know the procedure? I'm assuming I will have to remove the headers to get to the nuts with the proper tool. I have popped the covers and I really dont know what I should turn first. I already have the mufflers, the saddlebags, and the rear wheel off the bike for a tire replacement. There is a noticeable amount of sideplay in the swingarm...im guessing its about 1/8 inch movement at the ends of the swingarm. Thanks in advance.

Hello Folks, Ive been a member here for a little over a year, just lurking in the background,I guess its time to come out of the closet, as I am stumped. I have a 1987 Venture Royal with almost 80k. The swingarm is completely apart for general maintenance and a tire change. When I reassembled the swingarm I noticed about 1/8 inch free play from side to side, Im using the workshop manual to limit my mistakes, I have all of the right parts, and everything is torqued per the book. So assembly is not the problem, I think. I put it together and took it apart 3 times, and it still has side play,(yes I know what Einstein said about doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results). According to the book sideplay is eliminated by installing new tapered roller bearings and collars, but the ones I have now look and feel like new, what am I missing? I cannot find anything wrong. I was thinking of equal shims on both sides, but I dont think that is the answer. Did anyone ever run into something like this, any suggestions will be welcomed.

Well, after servicing my bike, I've run across a potential issue. When I pulled the drive shaft out of the swingarm to check the upper splines, a coil of metal was wrapped around it. Looked like the coils that spin out of steel when it is drilled. I had a look up the drive shaft tunnel and all looked well...no leaks and everything in place...as far as I could tell. After all was back together, it seemed to be running just as it should...until the rumble started. The description is somewhat typical of what has been described before; quiet with power on, a low rumble on deceleration, somewhat quieter with the clutch in. Being the paranoid type...I'm going to have to discover what the hell this noise is. What I've done so far is slip the swingarm boot back to look at the yoke. The bolt is in place so that shaft isn't broken. There is no detectable in or out play in the output shaft. There is very little rotational play in the mesh with the drive gear, (as gauged by slowly turning the shaft and listening for the tiny click when the gears touch). Total slack in the drive system with the bike in first is about 2 inches, measured at the wheel. With the bike in neutral on the center stand, the rear wheel spins easily, without resistance or binding. When I roll the wheel forward by handd, (which dynamically puts the same forces on the system as deceleration), I can feel a slight rumble which feels like gears meshing somewhat roughly. It smooths out when rolling the wheel backwards. With a stethoscope, I pinned down that the rumble is coming from the pumpkin, not the middle shaft. So now I'm going to try a few things. Tonight I will loosen the 4 nuts holding the pumpkin to the swingarm and see if there is enough movement to realign the shaft a bit. If that fails, I will remove the pumpkin completely to check for play. (When I had the pumpkin off to service the rear end, I pulled the shaft out of the pumpkin. The seal came with the shaft, completely intact so it was reusable. The input shaft stayed with the pumpkin indicating that the shaft was also intact.) I'll basically have a good poke around and see what's what. I'm hoping for an easy fix but am prepared for tears and pouting. Attached are some pics of a strange bit of metal I found wound around the shaft when I pulled it from the swingarm. I have no idea where it's from....I'll have a better look when I'm in there again...unless it fixes itself then it will have to wait until the snow blows.

Hey, just got done with my 16000 mile oil change and I noticed in the manual it said to repack the steering and swingarm bearings. My question is is this somthing I I can do myself? The bike has yet to go to the dealer for anything, I've done all the oil changes and tire changes myself. even took the tires off the wheels and reinstalled on my own, Iv'e had the bike up on the jack and done the steering handle bar swing, can't feel any thing loose. It acts like its supposed to. I did notice today when i got off the Interstate and was braking pretty hard I got a slight vibration in the front wheel. Really don't want to take it to the dealer and leave it for two weeks like they want,(or spend way more money than I have to fix it)

After pulling out the rear linkage to install zerks and fix a bad bushing, I see that there is oil leaking from the boot on the swingarm. And has been for a while, from the looks of it. I guess I need to replace the oil seal on the middle gear. So, after getting the swingarm off, do I pull the entire Ujoint/shaft/assembly off of the engine, and then take the yoke off of the shaft??? Or, can I get the yoke off the shaft and replace the seal without doing all that??? I've also heard bad things about removing/installing the rubber boot. Am I worrying for nothing?? This is uncharted territory for me, I don't want to mess this up!!!

Guest posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
i just know i saw a how to written up by some awesome person on here about adding grease zerts to various locations on the first gen bikes... but i can't for the life of me find it. does anyone have a link saved to it? I searched for grease, grease inserts swingarm grease. I am probably just blind, so would someone please give me a nudge in the right direction? thanks in advance! Jared:banana: -
I am getting a "clank" sound from the rear when I leave a stop light, ( has nothing to do with the light) I have greased the splines and the drive shaft thinking this was the problem, that didn`t do it. I am wondering if maybe the swingarm bushings/bearings need greased or re-tourqed.... or if I am looking in the wrong place... I have checked everything for any loose nuts or bolts, grabbed and tried to shake the rear end to see if I could duplicate the sound, no luck. I have noticed that if I stop only using the front brake, that I don`t hear that noise when taking off...Any help would be great!! Thanks, Kbay

Ok ... finally got around to pulling the bike apart to check the u-joint. Got the rear wheel and final drive off. Can't get the swingarm off because the nuts are too big. The biggest socket I have is 27 mm bought for the rear axle. I will have to go buy a larger socket for the swingarm and, from the look of things, a large hex key socket to fit my torque wrench. Can anyone tell me what size both of these are ? I can't find the size in the service manual. Stores are closed here today so I guess I will have to finish the job later. Thanks in advance.

What is the easiest way to lube the swingarm on my 86? i hope it wont be as difficult as replacing the fuel filter.
