    Biker Down

Son had a bad crash yesterday evening. Went down avoiding the rearend of a SUV. Chose the grassy medium instead of the rear bumper of the SUV. Messed up his Road Star and caused him to have a broken knee cap and fracture rib. Probably will need surgery to correct his knee injury. Bike probably a total. Could have been worse had he not been wearing the proper protective gear. Said he was not speeding and he rolled after impacting the ground like a ball. Glad he's alive! Prayer would be greatly appreciated for his full recovery. He's a great son!
  3. Wouldn't have it any other way. Thats a new slang phrase I been using lately when sh## never goes right. Just checking in to say Hi and were doing OK. The bike is still setting covered up all year No time to ride and Ramona's back injury still has her practically unemployed. She has been off since June 1st. The latest news is her brand new car just got hit in a local business parking lot. The guy lost control of his new chevy silverado 2011 model, clipped a phone pole, then rolled in the lot and took her suv out. Good news was she was not in the vehicle. Bad news was he has NO INSURANCE. Just another day in WILD AND DANGEROUS WEST VIRGINIA. I hope to get on here more often. Maybe winter will slow things down a little.
  4. Statistics finally caught up with me. On the 21st I was riding in Kerrville TX and a young woman pulled out of a parking lot in front of me to go the other direction. Didn't have much time, pretty sure I hit the Stebel horn (at least that is what I remember) and tried to turn out of her way hoping she would stop. Ended up catching her SUV on the bumper, the bike skidded into the vehicle and I left a nice dent in her door with my shoulder. Bike ended up facing back the way I came. As I was picking myself up off the ground she opened the door and said she didn't see me. After I screamed at her about hearing the horn she said she hadn't and got back in her car. I think she may have been a bit afraid of me at that point. EMTs transported me, a wrecker company took my bike and her SUV. The bumper was pushed sideways and back into the tire making it undrivable. I am sore, but on my way back to Georgia in my RV. I think my baby is toast though.
  5. growing up rural in the midwest i didn,t start thinking about deer until the fall when it was time to break out the orange and sight in the rifle. springtime was just not when i looked for deer. however, now that i,m on the road for a living i tend to see a lot more than most people. since the snow has melted i have been seeing more on the roads than i can remember. last night a suv passed me and before he could move back to the right lane a doe ran in front of him and took out his left side. allrighty, an insurance claim for an expedition but if it was a bike? just saying, be careful, be aware, the deer are still here. al
  6. My mother put me on to this story. http://www.ohio.com/news/dyer/38072269.html I feel for the guy in the SUV. Seems like he's being hung out to dry.
  7. I was on I-40 near Asheville in my SUV and had to run over a truck recap.I had no wiggle room and hit it about 65mph in a SUV which did fine.It made me think if I would have been on the bike what would have happened.I wish they wold give truckers an incentive not to run recaps.
  8. Finally, after being laid up and then recouperating from my bypass surgery, I got to go for a ride last weekend (7th). Rode up Hwy 31 to Montgomery where I spent the night. Took off Sunday morning to ride down 82 and 29 to Crestview and on down to the coast. I had driven this route this Spring in a bus only from South to North. Anyway, got to Union Springs where I rode around the town looking at old houses for a short time, then headed out of town. At the main intersection I had a red light. While waiting a car pulled up behind me. When the light turned green I looked and then slowly pulled out. The next thing I knew I was staring into the grille of a Dodge SUV on my right. I had no time to react; the SUV hit me, pushed me sideways about ten feet before it stopped and I fell over to the left. The bike went down hard. I rolled a little then layed there for a minute. Long story short, the impact broke the two bones just above my right foot and dislocated my ankle. They took me to Montgomery for surgery and I came home tuesday last week. I have just about given up on bikes. I am hoping that they total out the Wing, even though I really love it. And it only has 2350 miles on it. Two accidents in one year with quadruple bypass in between. And I have this horrendous scrape/bruise on the left side of my ribcage. I think that's where I hit the left handlebar going off. Well, I won't be making any ride-ins or meet and eats for at least 6 weeks. And then if I do attend it will be in my truck. I am over motorcycles. !!!!!!!
  9. So, we were out riding yesterday, me on my Midnight and my wife on her Honda Reflex. She's been riding on public roads since last Tuesday after three sessions in a church parking lot, so she's very new to the whole thing. When we were approaching the end of a two-lane stretch, I pulled into the left lane to give her some protection from traffic coming from behind when I notice an SUV coming up at speed on the inside. We are already in the area where the center dotted line has gone and the road is narrowing. I speed up a little and ease to the middle of the road, again to protect my wife ahead and indicate to the SUV that there's no room for her to undertake and, guess what? She does it anyway! As she passes I notice it's a middle-aged woman of the "trophy wife" type, with a yappy dog on her lap. Not immediately sure if she completed the trifecta with a cellphone or not, but it's possible. She then proceeds to ride my wife's tail for about a mile, overtakes her in a turning lane then makes a right turn. It was then that the Sheriff's patrol car comes flying by with blues and twos going full pelt! I signaled to turn and we ended up in a church parking lot and the deputy was giving the SUV driver a lecture on how not to drive, especially when motorcycles are involved! It's the first time in 30+ years of driving that a cop has been in the right place at the right time!! She got off with a warning, but I wonder if people like this EVER thing of the stupidity of their actions and the fact that if there's a wreck, they'd be inconvenienced by a few days of collision repair while the motorcyclist will be either in the hospital or in the morgue, just because they had to get one car's length ahead!
  10. About 2 weeks ago, I installed a Stebel air horn on my 1500 Goldwing. Wasn't easy....the only place I could find to install it was inside the fairing, right in front of the left side pocket. That location presented some challenges in getting it properly secured so it wouldn't rattle around, and in getting the wiring properly run to it. Took a couple of hours, but finally got it done. Yesterday on my way home from work, I had my first opportunity to use it in an emergency situation. I had just turned off of the main highway in front of my place of employment onto a county road lined with houses and driveways. I was accelerating when I noticed a black SUV ahead of me which was turning into a driveway on my right hand side. At that point it was probably 100 yards ahead. I was closing fast since I was in acceleration mode. Good thing I was also in "observation mode", because the driver of the SUV was NOT in observation mode. He swung into the driveway, threw the SUV into reverse and gunned it, planning on backing out onto the road in order to turn around. As soon as I saw the vehicle start to move in reverse, I swung to the left lane (no oncoming traffic, PTL) and activated the Stebel horn. What happened next had me laughing for the next mile or so.....the driver of the SUV, convinced that he had mistakenly turned onto a railroad track and that a 100-car locomotive was bearing down on his unobservant arse, stood on the brakes in record-setting time, then threw it into drive and hit the gas. As I passed his rear bumper, I gave him the obligatory "what the heck are you doing?" glare and continued on my way. Watching in my rear view mirror, the chuckles began. He sat there in that driveway for at least 10 seconds before beginning to slowly and carefully back onto the road again. I'm sure that he checked both ways about 10 times before his second attempt....or maybe he was just trying to get his heart rate back to normal before proceeding. Thank you Professor Stebel for the "always-look-both-ways" lesson that you taught an unobservant driver yesterday! The $50 for the horn and the 2 hour installation was some of the best time/money ever spent on my bike. If I would have just had my wimpy stock horns, my Wing would either be stuck into the passenger door of an SUV right now, or would have hit the side ditch pretty hard. Wouldn't want either option. If you've never heard a Stebel, believe me it is LOUD! Every rider should consider adding this safety device to his/her bike. LOUD HORNS SAVE LIVES!!!!
  11. I went on a 300 mile (150 each way) Patriot Guard Riders escort today from the Indiana/IL state line to Delavan IL to escort the 1144th Motor Transport unit home from Iraq. On I-74 the group was being led by Ill State Police at 75 mph in the left lane. We had the cop, escort truck with 5 large flags and about 12 bikes then two busses with the important people on board. I was third bike, and an SUV (compact) from Florida with an old man (I am one too, but hopefully not as obnoxious as this guy) chewing on a cigar and trying to pass the unit on the right. That is OK, but he would not go by the cop, and was hanging right by the lead bikes. Then our group started coming up on a semi in the right lane and the Florida SUV decided he didn't want to be stuck behind the truck, so he just turned left and shoved the lead bike off the road! There was NO hole or room for this guy, he just decided he was going to be in our lane no matter what! The bike managed to drop back, since the SUV was maybe 2 feet off the bumper of our escort truck. Once past the truck, the SUV went back in the right lane and got a good talking at by the lead bike, but they guy was just looking straight ahead and didn't care. Again, he would not go past the cop, so was sitting now right beside me when the same situation happened, this time he shoved ME to the yellow line, but I would go no furthur and was laying on my horn. At least there was some room ahead of the jerk, and I gunned it and pulled in front of him. He missed the bike behind me. Again, when the slow truck was gone, he pulled to the right. and would not pass the cop. the second bike this time had had enough and he pulled next to the SUV and almost knocked on the window at 70 mph. This time he got the drivers attention and got the point across that the SUV was to stay to the right. He finally dropped back and I didn't see him try that again, and he did what he should have done in the first place, pull off and get away from the line of vehicles. Now before you say we should have let him in, understand we had let other vehicles in that signaled their intentions and showed some road manners and respect. I would have been glad to let him in if he had signaled or waited for a break in the line, but he didn't. Yea in retrospect it was a dangerous situation, but for some reason when I was riding on the yellow line with his vehicle about 10" away, it didn't seem that bad. Nobody got hurt, but watch out for a dark blue compact SUV from Florida with a grouchy bald guy chewing on a cigar.
  12. Just starting to rain this morning as I pull out of the garage. Previous owner put a darned slippery slurry coat on the driveway (hate it). I get to the end of the driveway & slow down because an SUV is coming down the hill & around the bend to my left. Tires slip & as the SUV goes by I feel it starting to fall to the right, so I figure I might as well exit the driveway to the right, down the hill. Couldn't save it. Laid it down gently, tried a couple times to lift it, but the darned driveway is too slick to keep my boots from slipping. Went & enlisted my wife to help me lift it back up. Not so embarassing, just more fodder to have the driveway redone.
