  1. Part 1 of 4 ? Hi there, so this write-up is about our Venture Royal, the work behind it, what it took to not just get her back to running condition, but rather get her back to the responsive touring bike I’ve read (had yet to experience) she is! First things I did was try to ready it the 1st season for a short trip up and in BC with my boys. I went through the wiring one plug at a time; things seemed to be in pretty good shape! What I like about doing this with a “new to me bike” is that it formularises me with the systems and what might go wrong, where it is located and in a pinch if need be, I can sort through a problem quickly while on the road! Next I move on to the brakes and suspension, here is some of what I did: Drained ALL the hydraulic fluids- brakes, clutch, forks, and “fork air lines” Chained out the front springs with some I had from another project Changed the brake pads front and rear Change the dif oil, Changed steering stem bearings Disassembled the air control panel, cleaned with contact chemical Replaced burnt lights and fuses Replaced the tires Changed out the handle grips for 1” rubber/chrome type, I need the larger grips as my R/hand is a rebuilt unit. Some 30 years back I had a one on one with a hydrant;( You know they said it was my fault? Even though I assured them I wasn’t the fool that placed it there? Hydrants go on the inside of a bend! Not the outside of a bend!( Lubed the drive shaft spline with synthetic grease- I have come to respect the synthetic grease for each application where grease is called for; it stays put, stays bright in color, resists washing out- even when exposed to solvents, and in my experience maintains a cooler bearing, and also important is that it remains consistent- I add it to all my replacement bearings with an epoxy syringe! Took it for a ride, I found on the Mountain roads when the suspension was properly set and with 2 up and camping gear she could sweet talk a twist very well; however I was disappointed in the thrust! SG/Patch's
  2. Puc, Here are a few pics of my '77 MGB i've owned for around 3 yrs. Since these pics i've lowered the car some and done some exhaust work. Did a complete engine rebuild, SU carbs and all suspension pieces approx. 10K miles ago. This is what is replacing our totaled '07 RSTD.
  3. Hope everyone is doing well! With the bad weather around the corner I am getting ready to take the bike in the garage and fixing it over the winter. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the following product: 420 Series Single Shock http://www.cyclepages.com/ProductGroupDisp.aspx?ProductGroupID=4000199 They call it Progressive Suspension. I am by far an expert on this so forgive the ridiculous questions...but they state "420 Series high-performance shocks eliminate the need for a remote reservoir by utilizing an internal nitrogen bladder" Does this have to do with the Descicant container? What would be an advantage, if any, in using such a shock as a replacement? Is it worth the price or getting a stock used one on eBay? I like replacing with new parts when possible, even if a little more expensive. It states that it fits the XVZ12/13 Royale. Thanks in advance!
  4. Was reading an old thread about the Kumho Wobble: http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50114&highlight=kumho+wobble I recently put a Kumho on and have the wobble at 75mph. I'm going to adjust the air pressure before I try other things. Looks like air pressure, suspension part replacement, and tightening things up solved this for most folks. Any other solutions?
  5. Hello fellow riders. I'm a brand new member to the Yamaha family. I've been riding cycles since I was 16. My first bike was a Harley Sprint. That died on me when I was young and didn't get another bike until back in 2003 when I bought a Honda Shadow 600. That kept me happy for the last 9 years but I wanted something bigger that I could ride 2 up with the wife. Was just kind of looking around and fell in love with the 2006 Royal Star Tour Deluxe that a local dealership had for sale, so I pulled the trigger and now I'm the proud owner of said bike. I've got a few questions. 1. The bike itself didn't come with a owners manual. I've got the one off of Yamaha's site, but I'd also like a service manual. There are some things that from the owners manual didn't seem very clear to me and I'm hoping that the service manual will help clear it up. Any suggestions as to what service manual I should get? I've seen a lot of the electronic ones on e-bay for 2. This is the first bike that I've owned that's had adjustable suspension. What kind of tool do I need to adjust the suspension? 2a. I think I've found the suspension adjustment (again, the PDF from yamaha wasn't very clear) for the front forks but can't find where the rear adjustment is. (I have hard bags on if that makes a difference) 3. I'm not afraid of doing some of my own maintenance especially since there really isn't anywhere local I can take the bike to get serviced. (thus question 1 about which service manual I should get) Are there any kind of "specialty tools" that I need to get? It already seems to me like I might need to get a tool to sync the carbs and some kind of low pressure inflator/gauge to check and adjust the suspension? I think that may be it for now. Thanks in advance!
  6. I'll be taking delivery tomorrow on my '97 Royalstar tour classic with approx 28k miles on it, super clean. From all I've read, its a great bike, but the suspension needs firming up so the handling is not so 'wallowy' However, I've been unable to find anything regarding suspension adjustments/settings for this particular year (except one link that stated there were no adjustments available for '97s) this can't be true, can it? This is my 1st full size cruiser, and i will be doing a lot of two-up riding. I am about 195lbs with gear on, and my GF with gear is close to 160lbs so obviously soft suspension will be less than desireable for handling. I know its not a bike meant for aggressive riding or massive lean angle, but I don't want to be scraping floorboards on every turn either. Thanks for any tips!!
  7. Hello, The air suspension isn't working on my 1986 Venture Royale XVZ13T DS/DSC. According to the error message it should be a faulty pressure sensor (Yamaha part no. 31M-85981-00-00) and I bought that sensor already. But here is the point: I cannot find the original sensor on the bike to replace it !!!!!!!! According to Yamaha's very rough scetches it should be located somewhere around the speedometer or levelling computer panel. Can somebody help me out with the exact location of that sensor? Thanks Bernhard
  8. So I love my new bike (well new to me - 2008 RSTD) however I have the low speed heavy handling issue described here. It isn't real bad, but it does tend to want to dive to the inside on low speed turns and it is a little tough to keep straight coming up to a stop light without some wiggle room. I have checked the tire pressure, but have not checked the air in the suspension on either end. I have read that 0 PSI front and 25 PSI rear seems to be a common suggestion (along with 40PSI Front & 42 PSI Rear for tire pressure with Dunlops). I have read about changing the level links as a solution along with possibly changing the front tire to something a little narrower. Could someone explain what is going on here with the suspension and tire footprint? I get the tire pressure concept, but I don't understand how the suspension works i.e. air over shock, the level link change, and the narrow tire. Thanks very much.
  9. I finally got my rear suspension shock installed at the dealer. I asked the mechanic how much air was in the shock and he told me none. Is this correct because I had read that the air should be ajusted for a single or passenger rider depending on the weight of the individual. Thanks, lobo17
  10. I have been trying to figure this one out for a while now. I have an '88 standard. When on the side stand there is almost no lean to my bike, it is especially noticeable when parked near other 1st gens. I am always worried about the bike falling over on the right side while it is on the side stand. When I am sitting on the bike and want to put the side stand down, I have to lean the bike well past center and to the right to get enough clearance to lower the side stand. Once the bike is on the side stand, I have to hold it up while getting off so that it does not fall over on the right side. It is not possible to sit on the bike while it is on the side stand, it will fall to the right if you are not ready for it. Once I get off of the bike I have to pull it hard over to the left to raise the suspension as much as possible. While on the side stand I could easily push the bike over on the right side with one finger, it is that close to straight up. I am always worried about a good breeze blowing it over, or even someone just touching it in a parking lot. It is not possible to use the side stand on the side of a roadway, I have to use the center stand if parked on a road. For the air suspension I run 10 lbs in the front and 40 lbs in the rear, both tires are at 42 lbs. both tires are the recommended sizes. Can someone give me some reference dimensions from the ground to somewhere on the frame front and rear so that I can tell if I have a suspension issue or a side stand issue. Shortening the side stand should be a simple job compared to all new springs. I am considering putting in Progressive front springs, maybe next winter. But if the rear spring is also weak then I'll replace that to. I just hate throwing money/parts at a problem in hopes that something will work.
  11. Interesting read on suspension and how it works - http://www.cyrilhuzeblog.com/2011/04/14/the-inner-workings-of-motorcycle-suspension-part-1/

  13. Just wanted to let everyone know that Harley Davidson makes a hand pump for airing up the suspension system on the Venture. It allows removal of the air fitting without loosing the selected air pressure within:cool10: the shock. It also has a flexible hose which helps in connecting the pump to the air valve on the shock. Item: Touring Suspension Air pump Part#: 54630-03A Cost: 49.95 air adjust: 0 through 60lbs.
  14. I have been playing around with my air ride suspension to find the best riding comfort. Seems any were fron 15 to 19 is the best for me. Were do you have yours set. Merry Christmas
  15. I've added the zerk fittings on my 89's rear suspension linkage. I was wondering, how often does Yammie recommend greasing this on 90-93 Ventures? Frank D.
  16. I got my Superbrace in the mail today. It's already on and looks good. Now I'm just waiting for my new rear tire to get put on and my solid engine mounts. I'm going through the rear suspension in the mean time and greasing up bushings and repacking bearings good. OH... I CAN'T WAIT!
  17. one of the major weak points of all 1800 wings is the front suspension. the stock 1800 wing has anti dive and piss poor front springs, that sag early in life, and are to soft to begin with. the dampening is not the best either. there are two fixes for this . both make a difference of night and day in handling and ride. the first and most expensive is traxxion suspension like eck has on his. the poor mans fix is the race tech springs, gold valve and emulator like i have installed in mine. mine was around $400.00 for parts and i did it myself. the traxxion is over $2000,00 dollars and it requires machining of the forks , so you have to have them or one of their dealers do it. i consider either of these mods a must after riding mine stock, and with the modification. both mods deactivate the antidive as part of the install. you can deactivate the antidive with a simple mod and a nickle with a hole drilled in it, but then the front springs will be noticibly inadequate on hard stops. the antidive basically locks up the front forks when stopping hard and makes for a really rough ride when decelerating and using the brakes, front or rear. since wings have interlocking front and rear brakes it does it when using both brakes. some folks may not be bothered or notice the inefficiency of the oem set up. if your wanting the ultimate handling and suspension performance out of your wing, either one of these mods will make a big difference. the big gains are, much improved rebound on rough roads, a firmer ride, slightly more ground clearance (harder to drag my highway boards now), and a more secure feel in the curves. wings are unbelievable in the handling department. i can't believe a bike this big can can handle like a sport bike.
  18. My 1985 VR is haveing some suspension problems. When I turn the key to accessories the screen will turn to this. http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t319/Gillfoyroadpaintball/1985%20VR%201200/028.jpg?t=1270497790 Nothing happens when I press the buttons. Anyone know what could be the problem? Thanks,
  19. Hello, I have a 1996 RSTC and I was wondering if there is any adjusting that I can do on the suspension. I have always felt that the front of my bike bounces too much going over bumps even at low speeds and today after the bike fell I took it for a test ride and it seemed to me that it was bouncing an awful lot in the rear also. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bob
  20. Before leaving on vacation next week, today I changed the back tire. While I have it off, I intend on greasing the rear suspension linkage on my 89. I bought this bike last winter, and the previous owner told me that he was told that it had sat for quite a while. Makes sense, it only had 30Kmiles showing. Well, a lot of bolts that I never had any trouble with on my 83 (that I purchased new) I've had a devil of a time with the 89. This bike has a lot more rusted bolts than I figure it should have. It must have been stored in a mighty damp place. Anyway....I unbolted the rear links from the swing arm, pulled the bolt, snap ring, and loosened the pinch bolts from the rods that you're supposed to tap out towards the left side. Mine are siezed almost solid. If I hit the rear rod firmly with a hammer it moves a little. I really don't want to hit it that hard. I've soaked it with Kroil now, and it's soaking. I hope it frees up. Anybody else have this problem? Frank
  21. Wondering what the air pressure in the suspension should be when pulling a trailer? I reed that more air in the rear moves the COG forward. If this is right does a trailer affect COG? I'm 6'2" and have no problems looking over the windshield of my 05 RSTD unless I'm pulling a trailer. Even then I can still see over the windshield but do notice the edge is closer to my line of sight. This makes me think I need to add air.? Hope this is making sense?!
  22. What is the max. air in thr rear shock? I read some where on hear 7lb. max in the frunt. I was going to buy a Suspension pump & was wondering how big I needed? Any thoughts on what is a good air pump? I have been looking at Progressive.
  23. This guy figured it was time to clean up the old, traditional motorcycle wheel... and did it in spades! Although I'd prefer some suspension springs somewhere... (warning... 7 meg mpg file) http://www.bergall.org/temp/venture/hubless.wmv
  24. I have recently developed a squeak in the rear suspension. I notice it mostly when getting off and on the bike, but it must be telling me something needs to be lubed. I dont have a service manual if someone can tell me what it need it would be very helpful
  25. well i got the race tech mod done on my wing forks, and they are back on the bike. what a job. learned a whole lot about front suspension and dampening that i never new. all i have left to do is put the wheel on, and the plastic. next comes the progressive rear suspension mod. thats way down the road. got no complaints on the oem rear suspension. can't wait to hit the twisties. maybe next weekend. bill
