  1. I plan on installing an aftermarket stereo. Looking for a how to for wiring it. My factory radio/cassette work fine, but only one speaker works and just doesn't have the sound quality I would like. I saw a 4x6 speaker install that I also plan on copying. My bike came with a blank that goes in place of the stereo which I plan on installing an aftermarket head unit in place of the stocker that I remove.
  2. My Guess are the following: 1) AM/FM 2) Casette Stereo 3) CB 4) Air Compressure Any other options?
  3. RSTD no stereo. I want to set up and use my sirius radio system. I will have speakers in front on handle bars and in speaker pockets on trunk. Question is what do I need to power my sirius radio to work (besides 12 volt socket) Will I have to install a stereo with an aux output or can I get something that will work other then a stereo that can be tucked away and out of site. Any suggestions? Joe
  4. First time posting. Been lurking a while. I just bought a 99 Venture. The previous owner removed the CB and stereo. The speakers have been changed to Clarion and there are wires run to the right saddlebag for a stereo. I really would like intercom, CB, and FM radio. What are my options? I have a JM 2003 intercom/cb system I bought for a previous bike and didn't use. It has a Harley bracket on it and no headsets. The wiring harness and antenna are there, though. Looking for a reasonably priced solution. Originally thought I could pick up the parts to restore the bike to original condition, but people think they are made of gold.
  5. Hi everyone. In the process of a pretty stout going over of my wife and I's 86'. We've had those middle of the road IMC intercoms on our agv modulars for several years, maybe 30k through all the elements. THey still work great. They're the ones that have a firewire looking pinout to the coily 5pin. I would love to that pinout too, specifically if anyone's integrated those into a different configuration. Then I started thinking, Has anyone overhauled the entire audio/cb/intercom? Maybe out of a 2nd gen? My nightmare concern is maintaining all the ext. thumb button control and all. I'd love to drop another $100 mega flexible, bluetooth wal mart stereo in the hole but I want to be able to control with the existing. I like that my wife can adjust all her stuff and the radio as well. Then what about the CB? We live by that thing! Has anyone done an extensive audio/media (inc. CB) overhaul that would integrate nicely with the headsets? Great forum!!
  6. Friend has a chevy equinox 2005.The battery died and was replaced but it now has a CD error code.It has 6 cd's installed and will not eject them.Radio works good. The dealer said the stereo was bad and will have to be replaced.Any ides how to eject the cd's.Thanks in advance
  7. My wife and I are 50ish, and she was always terrified of bikes. Well, 2 yrs ago I talked her into riding with me on the Vulcan 900, and although a little scared at first, she thought it was ok. Problem was the small seat for her, and feeling of being maxed out on load for me. I bought the '85 a month or so ago, and was instructed to "practice" a lot before we went 2 up. Good advise, actually. I put about 500mi and new tires on it and she decided she felt safe enough. Let me tell you, after pulling almost 400lbs of us around on a 900cc cruiser, that VR is like a jet airplane for 2 in comparison. She said she was real comfortable, loved the stereo and smoother ride. Only thing that made her paranoid was being able to see the mirrors and cars in them, lol. Power wise, I couldn't really tell she was there. I think she'll be ready for more regular riding in the future. Another happy 1st gen owner here.
  8. I am fighting a crackling on the right speaker. It only happens when I am driving down the road. I could get it to happen by wiggling wires and have now determined that it is inside the amplifier. I have had the amplifier apart and looked for loose solder points or cracked circuit boards, can't find anything. I am getting frustrated. I would like to keep the factory radio for now, however, I think I may be getting close to giving up and switching to an aftermarket stereo. My question to everyone is, are you still using the factory radio or have most people switched to an aftermarket stereo? If you have switched, how did you install the aftermarket stereo?
  9. So I have a little project I would like to complete. I bought 2 male pigtails that fit into the standard tank plug. My goal is to just wire a 3.5 female stereo plug into the end. This should allow me to plug in my normal stereo plug into the tank plug and listen to the radio through my existing helmet setup. I currently listen to my Jimmy Buffett though a small music stick. QUESTION: Why can't I hear the music by just hooking the #5 (right speaker wire) and #3 (left speaker wire) wires to the female plug and then plugging my existing stereo patch wire into the 3.5 plug ? Do I need a different female receptor than a normal 3.5 female ? I have check the continuity in the wires and they are OK. I have tried it and it just doesn't work..
  10. Hey guys and gals, In the process of getting rid of my antennas, stereo has always sounded like crap, but wondering, what is the proper placement of them. If on the bike, stereo goes on right, correct. Going to the coiled copper wire in the trunk method.
  11. I need some help with my latest project. I have purchased two new Nolan N-com helmets, and installed the J&M 279 speaker/mic setup. I have never used a setup like this, but I expected to be able to listen to the stereo, and then, when I wanted to talk to the passenger, (or the passenger wanted to talk to me) push the push to talk button (which I thought would cut the stereo) and talk on the Intercom. However, when everything is plugged in and turned on, the stereo plays fine, but the intercom is also on all the time. The stereo does not "mute" (maybe it isn't supposed to?). Pushing either push to talk button has no effect. We can both talk over the music and hear each other. But, since the intercom is on all the time, the mic also picks up motor and wind noise and transmits it through the intercom, making the intercom useless while driving. HYPOTHESIS: I am guessing that one of the push to talk buttons is shorted out, or one of the intercom button wires is shorted somewhere. I'm also guessing that the intercom buttons close the circuit that should be open except when the button is pushed??? If the circuit is close all the time and the button opens the circuit, then something could just be unplugged. Please tell me how the intercom is supposed to work. Is it supposed to cut the stereo when the push to talk button is pushed, or is it supposed to work in the background of the music. Do you think there is a short somewhere, and if so, is there a common place that this would occur; where should I start looking? Thanks, in advance. dana
  12. Some or you may have remembered that I bought my wife a new toy about 3 months ago. It is a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire. She loves the car but hated the stereo as, like me, she is spoiled by commercial free satellite radio. So yesterday I had a new Sony stereo installed with Sirius satellite radio. She is a very happy camper now. The problem is, the Crossfire is not exactly a winter car so it won't get a lot of use for a few months. I wanted something with a silver face to match the existing dash as close as possible. To get one in silver, I ended up having to go with a marine unit but I think it turned out pretty well and it sounds fantastic.
  13. So what do you recommend? I used CB's quite a bit some 20 years ago but have probably forgotten most of what I knew about them. Back then they were still pretty big and I don't want to stick one of those on my bike. So what options are there for a 1st gen? I don't really care to break the bank to get one either. I do plan on getting the Scala Rider/passenger headsets, or similar, sometime in the near future and am taking that into consideration. Assuming that they can somehow be integrated into a CB somehow. By the way, I no longer have the factory stereo installed on my bike, so a stock CB probably won't work for me. Unless of course I could somehow connect it to the AUX on my aftermarket stereo. But then I would have to know the pinouts on the CB's connector. What kind of setups were some of you guys using on our "Leaf Lookers Run" this weekend? Thanks Bill
  14. My stereo control unit is doing wierd things. It locks up and the buttons will not work. I rode most of the day with it in the HS mode, but couldn't swap back to SP mode. After i shut the bike down and restarted it works again. Any clues??
  15. I need help. I was installing my wolo horn on my bike in the original horn location. I used the ground location behind for my ground. During preliminary tests, the ground was not tightened. The stereo was on. Long story short, I now have no audio, speaker or headset. Up to final assembly, stereo had worked. Did I fry my amp under the fairing? How much is that to replace?
  16. I am renovating my basement, basically a 12x20 room + hallway. I plan on getting a new TV with an additional sound system, but in only the $500 range for the stereo. While I have the place ripped apart, I thought I would tack in some rear speaker cable, so it is hidden under the drywall. What cable should I buy? How thick should it be? I guess I'm looking for midrange cable to match a midrange stereo?? Any other advice while the room awaits the drywall would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.
  17. I apologize, I don't know that much about the Bluetooth helmet headsets, but I like the flexibility with Bluetooth to connect to my phone, GPS, etc. Is there an interface to connect a Bluetooth helmet headset into the RSV intercom, stereo and CB? Being able to do away with that annoying headset cord would be awesome.
  18. I have an '88, 1st gen Venture standard. It did not come from yamy with any sound system. The PO installed a car stereo in the left side of the faring. It is one of the old fashioned ones that mounts in a a rectangular hole with a shaft hole on each side. OK, that is where I am starting from. None of the wiring is present to install the factory stereo and CB. What would be a good CB to put on a bike and where would be a good place to mount it? I am sure that at some point it will get rained on. I would like to be able to adjust the controls while riding. I am not totally opposed to replacing the current stereo as part of this. I'm wide open for ideas.
  19. Here is what is going on, My stereo comes on but you can't hear it either through the speakers or headset. If I turn it up all the way you can hear it a little bit. The CB radio works as it should except when I hit the push to talk button for the passenger it will sometimes transmit and sometimes it won't. After hitting the button a couple of times and error message comes up on the display. I removed the front of the fairing and started to unplug, clean, put grease in and plug things back together. I unplugged the big cable that the ends look like your headset hookup and the stereo started working but the CB didn't work any longer so I assume this is the cable for the cb radio. Has anyone had this trouble? If not I guess I should start at the Passenger control box and work my way through the cb then forward towards the stereo its self. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated OH yea I ride a 2000 RSV Thanks
  20. OK I need some input on where to start and what might be wrong. Everything on my stereo comes on and works like it should except no sounf from speakers or headset. I can hear it a little bit when it is cranked all the way up. FM, Tape deck and MP3 all play. The CB radio works as it should and I can hear it fine. It started this a few days ago and then all of a sudden it started to work and then when I got home it went out again. Thanks Rick
  21. Wondering if anyone experienced something similar or can confirm diagnosis. 2006 RSV. 46K miles. Many miles and a few years ago , I inserted a three-way stereo aux line splitter inside the faring...1) to GPS, 2) to Satellite radio/iPod, 3) to cassette aux jack. Also have a Buddy Rich cable. Stereo sound through any of the three stereo aux extension cables worked OK for most of the time, though have had to live with much lower volume levels, especially if two items were powered on at the same time (I.e. GPS and iPod) compared to the volume level of the AM/FM radio. Over time, the audio from the GPS has developed a lot of snap/crackle/pop and the audio from the iPod would drop in and out of the headset speakers (sometimes left speaker, sometimes right speaker) - not getting complete stereo. I would jiggle the male jack into the GPS or iPod and could hear the stereo fidelity cut in and out. I would replace the aux extension cable and use dielectric grease and everything would be good for a few months. Problem progressed such that I can't get stereo fidelity out of either GPS or iPod (I.e. half the sound in only one speaker). to the point where jiggling the extension cables doesn't fix it and replacing the extension cables doesn't fix it. I also replaced the three-way splitter to no avail. Through process of elimination I have found that the female aux pigtail that is hard wired into the radio is not putting out stereo sound, so every splitter and extension cable downstream is also not putting out stereo sound. Would I be correct in believing that the radio aux pigtail has failed? Should this be covered under warranty? Major bummer. Anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks David
  22. I plan on converting my record collection to mp3s (ya not the greatest archiving way but better than never listening to them now) I see lots of software but how the heck to you get from 2 RCA jacks to a macbook? I dont plan on hooking up my stereo again but rather go from the turntable to a what? Do I need a pre-amp to digital converter? Can anyone recommend some hardware for a macbook?
  23. I bought my Venture for touring and the excellence stereo. Tape player aside, it is very good and close to any stock bike stereo in production. I listen to tunes every time I ride. 3 of my very obscure favorites What's yours? 24. Has anyone attempted to mount a stereo system on an OEM windshield? I looked at the sites for the fairings and batwings and it appears I would be out a couple thousand dollars just to get some tunes. I was looking at the space above the instrument cluster and it got me to thinking...
  25. I thought I knew everything.... but Im..... puzzled...... The right channel is not working !! Any suggestions
