When my 89 is cold the starter cranks just fine. After it is warm the starter turns over very slow, pauses, and then the engine fires and starts. It has been this way ever since I got the bike 7 years ago. I lost the stator on a road trip last year (thanks freebird for the replacement procedure, worked great) so now things like this are getting more of my attention. I would like to pull the starter to test it, can it be done without removing the radiator? Any ideas on why it starts the way it does when it is warm? The battery was new last year and the stator is working fine now. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Last evening I fired up the bike - generally takes a bit to warm up and smooth out. I twist the throttle and it acts like it isn't getting fuel and the tach goes to 0. Let off and it goes back up again. Darn bike acts like it runs on 2 cylinders. Turned around to bring it home. then it starts running just fine - open it up and it takes off like Boomer leaving his woman. Any ideas about what happened?

So my brother, Steve, and I were driving around in the country and we came upon one of those hills that at the right speed make your tummy feel funny as you go over the crest and Steve smiles... so we turn around , go back to try it again and all of a sudden he giggles... now if you know Steve... well, anyway he turns it loose and we are really getting up a head of steam and I'm thinkin' of asking him about the turn right after the peak when he starts giggling again... I knew to cinch up my seat belt. As we reached the crest we went up... and up... with the road turning off to the right, we both rather knew that this was different. The hood was pointing to a big green thing that finally registered and my right foot tromped onto the imaginary passenger brake pedal. Steve, still staring ahead calmly said, "This will probably really mess up the paint job.", and giggled. http://www.bergall.org/temp/venture/upatree.jpg

Could someone please tell me how to turn off the audio system? I've found in a manual that I should press and hold for couple seconds "Audio" button, but it's not turning the audio system off, the channel displayed on screen just starts blinking. I've tried all the possibles combinations of buttons but just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

Sometimes, and increasing in frequency, when I try to start my 06 RSv it sounds like my Battery is dead. It trys to turn over and can't,try again same ,after a few try's it starts to turn over, buy sounds slow, but it eventually it starts. At my last fuel stop I checked the battery before I tried to start it, 12.6 volts, but I had to hit the starter button 4 or 5 times. I had the napa store check my battery last week, they said it was fine. Any ideas? Thanks George

Hey everybodye! Looking forward to MD next weekend. Hope to meet many of you then. Quick question...I've got an 83, and I've noticed that I have to use the choke from a cold start almost all the time. The bike always starts...but if its a "cold" start, or what I mean to say is that the bike has not been started in a day or two, I have to use that choke. At least 3/4 of the way on to full. Quite a bit I think. But like I said the bike starts right up, so I don't have any real complaints. After the engine is run at idle for 2 or 3 minutes, it runs just fine. I'm just curious if this is pretty normal? Or should I be looking into fixing this some how? Thanks all,

Things that I have done to the TCI; 1. Removed it from the original mount on the bike to be under the false tank. 2. Replaced the diodes. They were corroded. (Hopefully i soldered them correctly) 3. Baked it in the oven to make sure it is dried out. I thought that I had it fixed. I connected the TCI up after baking it and the bike started right up. Filled the tank with gas and went for a ride around Pineview Lake and back. Had a little popping but it may be from needing to be synced. After letting the bike cool down it would not start again. So on a whim I baked the TCI again. This time for only 10 to 15 min hooked it up and the bike starts right up. I can ride it all day as long as I don't let it cool down much. While riding I noticed that if I let the rpms get down to 1200 It would all of a sudden drop to 0 with the bike still running but feeling like its missing on one cylinder. As soon as I rev it up a little it comes back. This is the first time that I have soldered anything this small (Lot of copper pipes when building my house) so I'm not sure if I did it correctly. What are the steps to solder correctly? I'm trying to get this going with out killing my budget.

I have an 88 VR. Last year the TCI nuked and I replaced it with the ignition from Checkloslovakia. Road for quite a while this spring now I'm having trouble with hot starts. Bike starts first time but won't start after being ridden for awhile. Will turn over once or twice then the starter disengages. Leave it set for an hour and come back to it and it will start. I don't know whats going on but the battery is good and when running charges at 12 volts. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know anyone with another Venture, nor have I ever road one before. I always owned in-line 4's. So I'm asking... are these bikes suppose to sound like a v-twin? That's how mine sounds. It starts right up(min. choke), idle's good, but when you take off, it luggs(not boggs) a bit. It seems to have good power and speed, but lower rpm, it sounds like a v-twin... and luggs a bit, at slower speeds.

1. Think of a number from 1 to 10. 2. Multiply that number by 9. 3. If it's a 2 digit number, add the digits together. 4. Subtract 5. 5. Determine which letter in the alphabet corrresponds to the number you ended up with. 6. Think of a Country that starts with that letter. 7. Remember the last letter of the name of that Country. 8. Think of the name of an animal that starts with that letter. 9. Remember the last letter in the name of that animal. 10. Think of the name of a fruit that starts with that letter. One of the great things about this site is that you come across articles you haven't seen for a while or missed before. I happened across these two that are good reads and reminders as the riding season starts. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48003 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9893 Thanks to Monty and Carl for these riding reminders. And be safe out there !

83VR STD On cold start, warms up at idle or cruise until temp on gauge reads right at red/green line. Fan also comes on at red/green line, even at 50degF. Then suddenly starts to cool down to about 3/4 middle green. Then starts to rise all the way back to the red/green line. Does this cycle apx 3-4 times until finally cools to just above 1/2 middle green. Then it stays here rest of cruise, unless stopped in traffic, where it climbes back to red/green, fan cools to about 3/4, and cruising again cools to 1/2. Thinking thermostat sticking when cold, and takes over high temp to get it to open. Opionions?

Off work today because of snow. We had a 2 hour delay on Monday, and got hit with another snow storm this morning. I told Ron that I have given up on my Christmas Day ride. There will be too much salt and other debris now. I told him he can get out the tool box and start tearing her apart. He has a bunch of things to do. So I figure if he starts now, it might be back together at the end of March rather than May which is what usually happens. Oh my. No leather for months. It is going to be a looooooooooooooooooong winter! Yama Mama:snow2::sleigh:

A young ventriloquist is touring the clubs and one night he's doing a show in a small town in Tasmania. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes when a blonde woman in the 4th row stands on her chair and starts shouting: 'I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does the colour of a person's hair have to do with her worth as a human being? Its men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. Because you and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general... and all in the name of humour!' The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde yells, 'You stay out of this mate! I'm talking to that little **** on your lap!'

Had an experience today, that just fries my butt. I have been disabled for 18 years. I have a handicap plate on both my Durango and my Venture Royale. Earlier today I had to stop by Home Depot and parked my bike in a disabled slot. I have mostly gotten used to people looking at me funny when I use these parking places. Today as I was getting ready to leave when an elderly guy stops and starts grilling me about using the spot. I started out being polite and pointed out my tag and he wants to know "how I can ride a bike IF I am disabled". I just replied that I am disabled not dead. Then he starts questioning me about the POW/MIA jacket I proudly wear and the flag I fly on my bike! He finally realized he had me pissed off. Some times I wish I had lost an leg or had some visible signs to "justify" my status. I guess to be fair he could not see the brace on my ankle, or the 12 screws and plates in my neck from a 3 level discectomy and fusion. I have to wear the brace because of a failed fusion in that ankle. I was in the hospital for 3 days for that little operation,,,, then 3 months back in the hospital due to blood clotts. Since I have chronic DVTs ( deep vien thrombosis ) no one will even try to fix my fracked up ankle. I can't even get the dental work I badly need because no one will touch me. I have been on coumadin for 15 years now, they tried to take me off and I had a pulmonary embolism plus kept thowing clotts. I apoligize for this rant, it is just that it helps to get this stuff off my chest. Thanks for listening; Don

Hello! I just purchased a 1983 Venture and when I rode it home the idle stuck at about 2500. The bike starts and runs fine, but the idle will not slow down. Any suggestions?

Don't know if anyone on here has ever read the stuff at the following link: http://www.pashnit.com/gs850-wht.htm but I found it interesting. This guy starts with his Suzuki GS850 story, then continues on about Ventures, then on to a story about $1000 motorcycles on a 1000 mile ride. For what it's worth, I liked the stories.

My lovely 02 VENTURE has a problem (1st one ever, besides me). She runs great down the road then she just acts like she runs out of gas, pull over starts right up then does it again then hard start then repeats and would not start. Had it towed home and she starts up now. Any ideas??? Thank you in advance for your help...........................Ron

hello still having idling problem I went down the list of things to check. I resoldered the pins on the tci, removed the stop switch and cleaned it. took all the conectors aprt and cleaned them, changed the plug wires and plugs but it still want idle.It starts and runs when the choke is on,but when it warms up and the choke shuts off and it starts to idle the tack drops to 0 and it starts to back fire thru the tail pipe it will idle but is very low all most the point where it shuts off. on the road it runs good but when you let off to stop the tack will drop and it starts the backfiring. when I am idling it seems to be loading up bad you get a lot of fumes from the tail pipe. Is there some way to check the tci box to see if it is bad.I would like to try that before I take it to the shop. around here its so costly they want your right arm and your first born. thanks alot Darrell

I think I need to bleed my clutch...again! This will be the 3rd time....in 2 months. When I bleed it...and put in fresh Dot3, it seems fine for about a month...then all at once it starts acting up and within 2 -3 days it is unrideable. The "throw" gets less and less until it won't disengage enough to sit at a stop without pulling or stalling! The clutch fluid level is not down...so I'm not leaking anywhere Even after a clutch bleed the clutch starts to engage VERY soon after the clutch lever leaves the bar. I mean like 3/4 of the lever travel is meaningless. ANY IDEAS???
