Hi gang! Long time lurker, first time poster, thanks for having me on the show. Anyhow, I've got an 83 Venture that I'm trying to rehab, and have two problems. First is that the bike didn't come with a rear master. Have seen a couple on Ebay....you know...they're all almost 30 years old...not a fan. Anyone find a suitable replacement? I don't mind cobbling, but I thought I'd ask before I bought something I THOUGHT would be close. Thoughts? Second is the speedo. On the way home from picking the bike up, the speedo exploded. Other than used, does anyone know of a replacement that'll bolt in from another bike? VMax, Radian? Thoughts?

Hi! New to the forum and relatively new to MC maintenance so appreciate the help and patience. Searched the forum and did not find anything already here that helped. I am 2nd owner (I think) of a 96 RSTD with about 45K miles I have owned for about 1 year. Previous owner made a lot of stupid mods I am still discovering and fixing. It is my commuter bike and drive about 60 miles round trip daily. For the last week I am having trouble restarting when it is hot. The lights on the speedo fade out when trying to start and I have to open the throttle all the way for it to start. Also starts a little easier when the brights are turned off. No temp gauge but feels like it is running hotter in town but okay on hiway. Also, noticing a rythmic and rapid "flashing" of the speedo lights but this is inconsistent and only occurs at hiway speeds. Cant say whether these two issues are related since this started before the starting problem.

Thanks to StarFan for finding this excellent video. I have move this to the Tech Library at his request. Don Found this neat video on youtube on how to change the speedo face on the 1996 to 2001 Royal Stars. Very detailed and recorded in good quality. Had started a thread some months ago asking how to do this with no results. Should/can we add this to the Technical Library ? Here is the link: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLDGdo0DzZw]Changing the speedo face on my cruiser XVZ1300 XVZ 1300 Yamaha Royal Star - YouTube[/ame]

With a new post questioning second gear repair. I got to wondering how the others came out. i know there have been a couple of people asking about it. and one did a third gear repair. How did y'all come out? did everything turn out well, have you done it yet?? Mine is still holding well. I had to change my speedo out so i'm no sure of my mileage; but i'm thinking around 6,000 - 7,000 so far. And still going strong. Thanks again RandyA !!!

For as long as I can remember, my cruise has acted a bit oddly. I do have draggy throttle cables so the cruise isn't as precise as it could be but often yet irregularly, it would jump up 5-10 kph then fade away under the set point, then cut out. I could resume but in a few minutes it would happen again. It was getting to be a pain but I had taken out the vacuum pump and checked the connectors and all seemed ok....I was stumped. I even took the speedo apart to see if anything in there was off...didn't look like it. The cruise box behind the light was a bit worse for wear wth the board basically hanging out...but that wasn't the issue either. Last week I was on a road trip and while going through one town, I noticed my speedo wasn't working. I pulled over and the cable was undone....and the core missing. I went back and forth over the couple of mile stretch where it happened 4 times but found nothing....so I went on my way without a speedo or cruise. The next day, i found a place called Mr. Speedometer that, among other things, fabricated speedo cables. It cost me 25 bucks but the new one works like a charm. One side benefit is that my cruise is no longer jumping. It seems my cruise problem was a loose speedo cable. The speedo itself was always steady but since the cruise uses pulses, it only takes the slightest slip to make it think the bike is slowing down and try to speed things up...which is where the jumping came in. So if you're having odd cruise issues, I suggest first checking your speedo cable.

Hope this is the right forum. I sold my 84 to a good friend and he has been unable to fix the speedo. Does anyone have a working speedometer? Or an entire cluster? It appears the drive broke where the cable goes in. Which approach should he take? It seems to me changing the entire cluster would be easiest. Thanks in advance.

After this last weekend's ride down to San Jose, then up to Sacramento/Auburn, then back home to Olympia, WA...I am tired of the error factor on my speedo and Odo. I have previously installed the SpeedHealer units on my previous 3 GL-1800's, dialing them in to match my Garmin Zumo 550. Now it is a must that I install a new SpeedHealer on this '06 RSMTD. I am disappointed that Yamaha had to join all the others in putting out a speedo that reads so darn high, compared to what the bike is really doing. If I just putted down the road, doing the speed limit, and falling aslepp like the rest of the sheep in traffic, then it would not be needed as bad. But it is still crazy to be riding along just slightly faster than the flow of the other vehicles, and my speedo reads 80 - 85 mph. I have had such great success with the SpeedHealer on my other bikes, and am hoping that the same device (but specific to the RSTD) will correct the error factor in my otherwise cool looking speedo. If my speedo is reading 85 mph, I want to really be riding at 85 mph...not 75 or even 72 mph. Urgh ! I will get this issue fixed. BTW, those new Flanders handlebars (650-08783) really are nice. Yeah !

Well I told the old gal out for a 150 loop yesterday and two things happened... One I lost the speedo, the cable came disconnected, I'm assuming I have to remove fairing to get it back on. Second my left turn signal began to flash faster than the right, still working properly just faster than the right. Any help from any body would be appreciated. The turn signal is s little weird. Bags 84 VR 120k ride and fix it again

I'm getting a little oily on the bottom of my speedo cable. What could be leaking from that? Any particular fix suggested? Here's a pic. http://db.tt/LkvwHh7f

I was in need of a new Speedo and I found a whole dash assembly on an ebay auction that I won for $32.00. WOW cheap right?? Yeah I thought so too but there was one draw back. The speedo was a KPH speedo and not a MPH speedo. It was so cheap, I decided to go ahead and get it anyway with the thoughts of maybe switching out the face of the speedo with my old face so the MPH would be the larger numbers. I tried this and unfortunately, the Speedo is off by about 5-7 MPH when check via GPS. Looks for now that I'll have to put the original KPH face back on and just deal with looking at the smaller numbers for MPH. My question is this, will this throw off the actual mileage of the bike (i rolled the dials of new speedo to match my mileage) even though I'll be driving following the MPH numbers on the dial. Just not sure if the mileage will tick by faster or slower since it's a KPH speedometer. Also, is there a way to calibrate this speedometer to match my MPH dial and to have the odometer roll for mileage and not kilometers? Thanks guys and gals! Jay Hope

I had a little squeak in my VRII Speedo Bearing. I had a friend with a machine shop and he made this out of aluminum. It works just great. So I thought I would present a group buy opportunity. Just response here and after a week or two I'll see what kind of quantity order we get and then see what kind of price I can get for that quantity. This would be a non committal response. Once I get the price then I will ask each if they are still interested in an order. I'm guessing that the coupling are the same for MKI and MKII. Could someone check please. Also if some could find out if the Speedometer coupling for a 1st Gen is the same as a 2nd Gen.

not the speedo ....... (?)
barend posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK, so my '83 has a new noise, I thought maybe the speedo but I pulled the cable and lubed it and it still does it. The "whine" starts pretty much when I start rolling, builds up to a constant level and stays there. It is louder when the bike is cold but still somewhat noticeable when I've ridden 30 miles. Any ideas? I do have an issue with the tach not winding up as it should. It does go up or down but takes about 5 miles to show cruising RPM and will not respond rapidly, even going down, but the thing is electric, so I don't know that would be it?? -
Can anybody tell me if the difference in the Canada/US speedo is just the faceplate, (so all working parts identical) just the speedo/Odometer cluster or if the front wheel part is different? I would imagine cross referencing part numbers would tell me but I don't know how to get that information. I don't think it is just the faceplate.....they don't quite seem to line up i.e. 12 o'clock high is 55 mph on US bike....but about 67 mph on Can. bike Mind you, I am comparing Mk I(canadian) to Mk II (US) The speedo works on my (Canadian) 84 but the odometer does not. I have a US speedo to put in (thanks to a member here) but I'm not sure if it will read correctly. .

Of course I forgot the lock in the front wheel, put her on the side and destroyed my speedo wire...unbelivable. Does anyone know which speedo wires work on our bikes from other models? Looked for XVZ1300TD and could find none but plenty for other Yamahas, should fit anyhow I guess but which ones?

I have been asked a number of times now about the retro design of the speedometer on our 2000 RSV (red - the best color). Do any of you know if it was modeled after any particular truck or automobile speedo from the 1950's?

This has probably been done before but since I haven't yet seen it mentioned, I thought I'd pass it on. I wanted to do a quick speedo check on my Triumph using my Garmin 255. While looking for a way to do a "quick and dirty" temporary attachment, it occurred to me to use the included suction cup bracket and attach it to the face of the tach. Worked like a charm and puts the GPS unit in a great line of sight position! Unless I'm racing (Wife says I'm too old for that anyway!) or looking for a problem at a specific RPM, I don't use the tach much since by now I can shift by ear (As can any of us who've been riding for a while). I tried it on the Venture and the only other thing it hides is the volt meter and that can be seen by rotating the unit on it's bracket. It's also a good idea to attach some type of line just in case it somehow vibrates loose, but for a short hop such as a speedo check, it works quite nicely. It might even work for a longer haul, although the lack of waterproofing could be a problem. Oh, I couldn't test the Venture as it's jacked up awaiting a fork seal change...boy that oil does come up nicely in an air fork doesn't it? As for the Triumph, it was about 5.5% optimistic - 85 KPH on the GPS at an indicated 90 KPH. Not too bad since I've heard that many bikes are as much as 10% optimistic.

How in the world does the part of the dash come apart where the speedo is. have searched here, googled it, looked in repair manual. I have the front part of farring apart. I can see the backside of cluster, but cannot get to it. I am specifically wanting to access the clear lense you see the speedo through.

Anybody know how to rebuild the speedo on a MKII? I have no idea where to start. My speedo on my 91 quiite working the other day. The odometer and the trip odometer are functioning so Im assuming its not the cable. Just not reading how fast Im going. Had to drive home using the tach to gestimate how fast I was going. Nay help will be appreciated. David

We went to get a cup off coffee last night and on the way home I seemed to have picked up a new sound. Brenda describes it as a stuck leaf or something stuck somewhere that is flapping around and I concur that is seems like something is vibrating. Engine temp and voltage are good, tach is solid and the speedo has an occasional flutter around 55-65 (but the cable has been replaced by the shop last year and I know what a squealing speedo cable sounds like.). Brake disks were cold to the touch when we arrived home (it was in the 30's). The sound is not continuous and will vary in intensity, starting abruptly and fading out or vice versa. It does not appear to be speed or RPM related! I'm kinda stumped but am leaning towards checking the speedo cable or maybe an exhaust leak at the front header?? Any other ideas??
