Had my 06 fairing laid forward for shock maintenance. When finished I tried to hook the battery back up. The + lead sparked even with the key off and it made a noise like a starter solenoid when the battery is low. Bike won't start and the battery goes dead in a short time. Again this happens with the key off...any ideas?

My "other" bike is a 1981 Honda Silverwing 500. I put a ton of miles on it every year, and for 5 years have not had a problem. Well now I am having a problem that I am unsure how to fix, or diagnose. Until tonight I have not had any problems with it starting. Now tonight I picked up my wife from work with it and when she got on I hit the button and the lights went out like normal but nothing else. I had to jump the solenoid to get it to start. After that I noticed that the lights seem to get brighter and dimmer, the turn signals work for a minute then just stay on and at the gas station I had to push start it. I do have a new solenoid ordered, but is that the whole problem or just the tip of the iceberg? My wife thinks I am going to retire it once the Venture is up and going. That is not going to happen. I need to figure this out. Everything I checked with my meter has a voltage range from 11.0 volts to 15.1 volts. Right off the alternator it sits constant at 15 volts (ac here). Any help would be appreciated. And I replaced the rectifier about a month ago, the old one just quit. That was obvious as I lost power everywhere. May still be a problem with the new one just wanted to get all info out. Shaun

Came home the other day and cut off bike. Wen to try and tart back up and nothing. All lights, radio and everything went out. Pushed it in. Cut switch back on and finally heard a constant ticking from the Starter relay beside the fuel filter. Replaced it with used one and now the starter solenoid is clicking constantly when I hit the start switch-no starter. Crossed the pos/neg on the solenoid and it sounds like bendix is coming out but no engagement. Has the starter gone out or is it something else?

It appears my solenoid maybe dead. I had a problem with the solenoid just clicking sometimes and sometimes the bike would not start at all sometimes I would press the start button several times and get nothing and sometimes I would get it to turn over. Now nothing no clicking no starting. Jumped the solenoid bike started right up. Disconected the Blue/white wire at the small terminal and put a test light and volmeter in between and connected to the positive terminal when I hit the start switch the test light lit up and when I used the voltmeter I got 12+ volts. So I'm guessing its dead a solenoid. I have searched the site for a small car/small engine replacement instead of the Yamaha one and havent been able to find a good suggestion of one to use anyone have one?

On the 86'VR it appears that the starter solenoid has gone "belly up" on me. If I take a screw driver and jump across the two terminals on the solenoid the bike will start, Does anyone have one laying around for a 86 to 93 VR. Also, where in the heck does that small wire go to from the solenoid?!?! It just seems to disappear into the bowells of the frame. I would be grateful for any help I could get on this issue, As you all know, I can turn a wrench pretty good but Electric matters are Greek to me! Thanks Folks, Earl

GeorgeS and I were discussing my current and reoccuring draggin starter problem. He mentioned that he remembered someone posting that they had used a solenoid from a small foriegn car to replace the oem solenoid that comes on the 1st Gens. But, he did not remember the details of which car the starter came off of. The problem is that the stock solenoids don't seem to hold up very well and the cost of new replacements from yamaha run close to $80.00. Using the car solenoids was considerably cheaper with a heavier duty solenoid. The question is does anyone remember the name of the post or by who the post was made that had the details of this solenoid mod?

Leveling unit question
Burninator posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I put my 86 Royale on the centre stand and set the front and rear to low, medium or high the compressor pumps the pressure to the correct P.S.I and will hold it without loosing any air. As soon as I switch the key to any other position and back to check the pressure both fron and rear are at zero p.s.i. There is no error message on the display. Is the most likely reason for the sudden loss of air pressure when the keyk is switched off due to a bad solenoid? I have a friend with a spare and we are going to swap them to see what happens. I think that the ability to hold the pressure indefinitely with the key in the accessory position means that there are no plumbing or seal leaks. I hope that it is a solenoid as that will be an easy fix. Has anyone out there had a similar experience?
