A couple of years ago Condor wrote that the difference between the carb diaphragm slides from a 1200 and a 1300 was one had a larger vent hole. It appears to me that that is the case -- and the vent hole on the 1300 is noticeably larger. I am replacing one cracked slide housing (the black plastic part) on a 1200, so the question is can I use a 1300 slide without any problem? I also thought about using JB Weld and re- drilling the hole to the 1200 size. Has anyone done this? Last two questions - is there any place to buy 1200 slides cheap? If not does anyone have one 1200 slide (even one in pieces that I can reglue) that they care to part with?

Last night after riding my '83 VR about 8 miles and watching my gas gage go from 3 bars to empty, I thought I better investigate. I pulled the cover off of the breather box so I could see the carbs. I noticed that when I rev the engine up that the slides are not moving very much. I can also see a lot of gas on top of the butterflies. I guess my question is, how much should the slides move? It seems to run very well out on the road but now I wonder how much better is should run. When I first crank it up after setting over night, it takes a few minutes for it to start hitting on all cylinders. This may be due to flooding. It starts very easy with no choke. I have checked the diaphragms and don't see any pin holes but they are very wrinkled looking. I really need help. Thanks in advance.

So, my 87 project is running a bit rough so I do what any shadetree guy would do and I look down the carbs when the bike is running. I noticed that all the slides are vibrating at different rates with some more active than others. It this a balance thing? Might be shot diaphragms but on a machine this old as soon as I open the carb covers to check for pinholes the diaphragms will be shot because I opened up the chambers. Is there a visual diagnostic other than pulling the slides that indicates diapgragm condition? Letting sleeping dogs lie and all that...

One of my carb slides have separated from the diaphragms Now, if I should glue it, how tight should the seam be? One the other slides I can rotate the diaphragms! Since even pin holes are affecting performance I guess that it must be pretty tight! If I use superglue between the steel insert and the slider, will I ever be able to separate them again?

Pieces of Carb Slide...
JoeKanuck posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
So I just get done an 800 km ride from alberta into bc. The bike is running good but not great...it feels a bit low in power. Yesterday I decide to take off the aircleaner and have a look at how things are working. It turns out, one of the slides isn't moving. I take the diaphragms out and one has come completely apart. This is the second carbon this has happened on so I take all the diaphragms out and a third inevitable is loose as well. It is an easy fix to glue them back together. Now, it runs like it should. Check those darned slides, folks.- 9 replies

I have a "million" slides that I want to put on the computer. Does anyone have any experience with slide scanners? I would like to get a sturdy one, capable of scanning a multitude of slides. Appreciate any help. By the way, when I went to Best Buy to inquire about one, the salesperson (young) did not even know what a slide is...had to explain.

I road up to SteveD's house on Saturday and met him and Earl & John for the first time. Was a pleasure to meet them, Earl put in my new diaphragms and repaired my slides, needle mod & synchronized carbs. ( an I helped) Steve looked over my bike with a fine tuned flashlight, now I know my frame was welded and in good shape, He showed me my slides were not moving right 2 not at all. (glad I bought the diaphragms in the group buy) The roads were wet so I didn't roll on the throttle to much but the bike is running a lot smother, my mirrors don't shake as much and starts easier. I hope to go for a ride soon to test the improvements. I have to go to Beaufort County SC to work with the Sheriff's Office for 3 days so it will be a few days. Thank You so very much Steve & Earl ps, Another example of what fine people we have at VentureRider.Org

It is my understanding that there is a difference between the MKI and MKII on the difference in the diameter of the hole in the slides. I read in another post about using a dinajet kit and it said with the weaker springs, the slide hole needed to be opened up and frankly, that did not make sense to me. I would have thought that weaker springs would require a smaller slide hole as a larger allows more vacuum to pull the slides open quicker as would weaker springs. What would opening up the hole do on the slide actuation, especially with the washer change and extending the needle out .030 more on an 83 model? RandyA

Quick question... I'm in the middle of reassembling the rear end of my 2002 Venture. Did the hub maintenance and pulled the driveshaft to clean and lube. Managed to get the front re-inserted but my question is about the rear. How can I be sure that the grease seal slides into place in the rear differential? Do I just put it in place and tighten it up? Don't want a bad seal or ruined parts if I force it by snugging down the acorn nuts. Thanks Ross

I recently bought a 1987 XVZ13DT and started to clean it up. The boost sensor wasn't working so replaced it with a newer used one, it did help with the backfire problem to some degree but the bike still backfires . The symptoms are that if you slowly come onto the throttle it will reach 4000 rpm then crap out badly. If you crank the throttle on it backfires really badly and will not pickup RPM. Backfires through number 2 carb and the exhaust. The slides do not move much and just dance about at a partial opening when the backfiring starts. Timing is okay, carbs are synched (checked them). Ignition coils and wires are good according to the manual, pickup coils are are okay (a least all the resistances match my other Venture which runs great). TheTDI is a newer one. Battery is new and fully charged. I checked the fuel pump pressure which is good. Grounds are cleaned up good. It starts up and idles but has a slght miss on idle. Comperssion is 170 accross all four cylinders. The carb slide diaphrams are visually good on all 4 as are the slides. Plugs are new but black an sooty as are the exh pipes. So my thoughts are dirty carbs and a lean out a higher RPM as I have done all I can to the igintion system in terms of newer parts. Seems it will not transition to the high speed loop of the carbs. Hoping for some wisdom in how to fix the problem. The bike was an ebay buy and is a real looker chrome wise but chrome don't get you home. I have redone the fork seals and bushings, new steering head bearings and progressive springs with superbrace. Newer rotors and brake pads. Have an 83 XVZ12TDK as well which has been a great ride I would take anywhere and have. Any wisdom to confirm my thoughts or any ideas are surely welcome. This is a great site and have noticed some really great people willing to help keep these classic bikes on the road. Sincere best wishes to you all.

I have a 97 royal star classic with 35000 miles on it. I have had it for 2 weeks and have put over 1000 miles on it. I upgraded from a v-star 650. I love the ride and have learned so much from the site. It appears to be missing or vibrating on a moderate throttle (I have been at 50mph in 3rd, 70 in 4th and still notice it). It is noticible when giving throttle from an idle while in neutral also) I have put two sets of plugs in, synced the carbs (to the best of my abilities), checked the resistance on the plug caps(all about 10k and have just ordered new ones based on info from this site as I am getting some ignition noise when listening to the radio on the head set). When I increase the throttle through mid range, it appears to be missing. I have ran a can of seafoam through it. I have adjusted the idle mixture screws. I removed the air cleaner cover and moved the slides back and let them go. The slides for cyl 1&2 return slowly, the slides for 3&4 come back much quicker. I have not pulled the the diaphagms to check for holes. At cruising speeds (high rpms) it seems to run fine. At an Idle. all cycinders are fireing and all plugs appear to be burning clean. Would the shimming of the slides help this? I was reading several posts that were discouraging. Comment about not doing anything to this model year and instead selling it to get a 2002 or newer. Is this the case for this bike? I am not looking for a dragster, just a comfortable dependable ride. I know I am rambeling. any helpful hints would be appreciated.
