Hi All, I have been lurking for a while and posted a few things, mostly trying to get some more knowledge before tearing into my bike getting it ready for Spring. Great site and lots of information here! Here is the story, My wife and I started riding 2 years ago and just fell in love with it. We have a great group of friends and family who we get to ride with and it has been a new and awesome experience for us. We started on a 1982 Honda Silverwing Interstate with 7,000 original miles on it. We put 10K miles on it over the last 2 summers and it was a great starter bike for us. I sold is on E-Bay and it now has a nice new warm home in Florida. I have been looking at Royal Stars for about a year and decided that is what will be our next bike,.. Well I found this 1997 Yamaha Royal Star Tour Classic with 32K miles on it: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1996YamahaRoyalStar001_zps4b5dccf3.jpg http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1996YamahaRoyalStar002_zps5db08446.jpg http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1996YamahaRoyalStar003_zps3b34d541.jpg http://inlinethumb01.webshots.com/33920/2141459730101950171S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb63.webshots.com/47038/2219161110101950171S600x600Q85.jpg It was at the Auto Auction (I own a car lot) late last fall. I was high bidder on it for 2K and bought it for $2,220.00 and rode it 60 Miles back to my shop the same day. It was too great of a deal to pass up! My wife and I are very excited about it! I put a new rear tire and rear brakes on it last fall, was able to put about 200 miles on it before snow flew and it has been sitting ever in my shop since. Few other things that I have done to it was buy a stock windshield, rear floor boards, front lowers, and a luggage rack. Since I got it from the auction I have no idea where it is as far as maintenance is concerned So now it is time to start working on it. Here are the plans: Do all of the basics Full Fluid: Change, Oil, Rear Drive, Front Forks, Tune Up, Plugs, Clean the K&N's Sync the Carbs Adjust the Valves. For Modifications: Install Fairing with full gauges: volt, Temp, Oil, and tac 6x9 Speakers Small Amp for a MP3 Player, dont want a big car radio. Tall Riders Back Rest Luggage rack Few more saftey chrome items. The plan is to start working on it in the next few days and have it all done before spring. Here are some pics of it so far: Fairing test fit: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover002_zps08625be4.jpg Side Shot tank, seats, side motor covers removed: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover003_zps8573ebce.jpg http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/45931/2789621260101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Didnt know the bike has K&N Filters! http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover004_zps10513349.jpg http://inlinethumb52.webshots.com/45235/2789763760101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Shot of the rear quad pipes: Think they are Barons Nasty Boys http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover005_zpsfd156eb7.jpg http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/3275/2607327560101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Yamaha's Comfort Cruise Seats made by Corbin, and Tank: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover006_zpsdbda4006.jpg http://inlinethumb53.webshots.com/46708/2694000440101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Side Motor Covers to be blasted and re painted: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover007_zps1f362dd9.jpg http://inlinethumb51.webshots.com/48050/2556630150101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Fairing Backside: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover008_zps678f716f.jpg http://inlinethumb40.webshots.com/359/2310931100101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Rear seat and windshield: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover009_zps49835fea.jpg http://inlinethumb59.webshots.com/13306/2960733780101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Oil leak on the right side: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover011_zpsfb610ef2.jpg http://inlinethumb01.webshots.com/26176/2902507960101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Left shot of bike: http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/s564/Darrin-GT/1997%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Makeover/1997RoyalStarTourDeluxmakeover012_zps33e48000.jpg http://inlinethumb45.webshots.com/46700/2436787720101950171S600x600Q85.jpg So I will keep everything in this post as progress slowly moves forward. I am sure that I will be needing some advice as I get into this project. We plan on keeping this bike for some time so if you have any suggestions or advice I would be happy to hear it! Thanks! master brake cylinder 83VR
barend posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
went for a ride today and discovered my foot brake bottoms out with no discernible braking action. I do not appear to have any leaks (no spots on the garage floor), so I am figuring the master cylinder is shot. If someone has a good used one they want to unload let me know, otherwise I'll be going the rebuild route. Thanks! -
Just picked up a slightly used (maybe had 30 shots taken) Canon EOS Rebel T2i DSLR camera c/w 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens and a 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS lens. The 55-250 lens was new in the box. Came with a real nice Lowepro "backpack" case ... all for $640! Now I can really make my scoot look great! Shot of our Honeysuckle vine at full zoom which is appx 30 ft away Shot of the house next door after dark. The "fire" is the street light. You can barely see the house with your eye due to the darkness, except for their outside lighting.

Safety not Saftey. True story on MLive today; A 42-year-old Grand Blanc Township man may do well with a refresher course on gun safety. The man was hunting small game in Grand Blanc Township on Sunday when he tied his shotgun on a rope so he could carry it up a tree. Nothing could possibly go wrong with that plan, right? As he was making his way up the tree, the hunter dropped the gun and it went off. Repeatedly. The first shot his left leg, followed by another shot that hit his right leg. Ouch. He was able to crawl out to a nearby road where a relative came to his aid. He was taken to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition. He later told police he thought the shotgun's safety was on. Officers then informed him it's probably not the best idea to tie the rope around the trigger. On the bright side, the Department of Natural Resources came out and ruled it a hunting accident and that the man had not broken any laws. http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2012/02/offbeat_unsafe_gun_use.html

Well dang......that shot my goal of a 12 month riding season this year. Yeah, I know, no big deal for some of you southern boys but in Nebraska it's a rare thing. I started riding the bike to work everyday back in mid March of 2011 and never even got in the car again except on a few really nasty days until this month. I think it was less than 5 days of not riding in that time. The temps dropped down to -3 last night and I decided to pull the battery out and bring it in. Hope it warms up a couple days so I can take another shot at this. At least above 15 degrees. But it's supposed to snow again tomorrow so I better gas up the cage. 11 months....... best year ever for me. Now I'm bored. Mike

you've ever made a soaker hose by shooting a coiled up garden hose with a shot gun. (saw this done on Rocket City Rednecks on NatGeo)

For those who were at the Pork in the Pines and asking about Cheap Shot. Just spoke with him a while ago, and he is OK. Minor little glitch in his life. Other than that, all is well with him and his lovely co-pilot.

Sniped my first Ebay Auction tonight. After losing out by several dollars the last 2 times I figured out the system and with just seconds to go I pulled the trigger and gave it a nice head shot. Its an aluminum wall piece with patterns cut into it with a grinder. This guy, Jon Allen, makes some real nice stuff. Not bad for 61 bucks. http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Modern-Abstract-Metal-Wall-Art-Contemporary-Sculpture-/00/$%28KGrHqN,%21jkE3LlE-htKBOJh6MZg2%21%7E%7E0_1.JPG

Though she has dubbed it the "baby beast", my girlfriend has joined the world of the two-wheelers on her very own Vino 125. We have been seeing each other for a few years now and I felt that I wanted to give her something special for Christmas (the one that just past). She enjoys riding passenger on my RSTD, but I knew that she is more of a driver. After we came back from a trip to Paris for 2 weeks and having seen her have the dreamy eyes at the sight of many 'cute' Vespa scooters and comments like "ohh I wish I had one! Wouldn't it be great?" I felt that I wanted to make her wish come true. So back in September 2010 I started to look around for used scooters. I was shocked to find that the price of a used Vespa was too high, and also the amount of knock off/fake Vespa's was kind of dodgy. But then I started to find that Yamaha had a retro-looking scooter called the Vino, and the used prices were much more affordable. Then I stumbled on to a deal-and-a-half for a Vino 125cc for $400. It has a bigger engine than the 50cc scooters which can barely do 45mph, so I felt that this was a much safer bike to go with. The only catch was that this scoot was pretty roughed up with high mileage, given the engine size, of 14,500 km. All of the body panels were pretty scratched up with huge gouges on the front fender and front panel. The tires were shot, torn seat, very dirt, poorly maintained, but it seemed to run. So I bought the Yamaha Vino and decided that I would transform it into a 'cute' scooter. In the next few months before Christmas I pulled the entire buggy apart, fixed up all of the panels, repainted them, reupholstered the seat with new marine grade vinyl, replaced all of the fluids, cleaned the entire engine compartment (there was an unbelievable amount of dust/sand in there), added chrome trim to the panels, cleaned the carbs and replaced the tires with new white walls,,, all under her nose. I almost got caught a few times, but I was lucky every time to keep it a secret. I managed to turn the ugly ducking into a beautiful looking machine. Well, on to Christmas Day.. I had to bring the scoot to her grandparents house and I only had one way to take it there. No! I did not drive it in the freezing cold and snow. I can actually fit it in the trunk of my Chevy hatchback. Try doing that with a Royal Star! So I pull into a school parking lot a few blocks away and unload the little thing. I put my gifts for the rest of the family in the foot area and under the seat (lots of storage under there!) and put the key in the ignition. Hit the started,, and, nothing. Stranded there with the this beautiful..paperweight. Well fortunately I got her going after 10 minutes - god bless this machine that it also has a kick starter as well! I rode the scoot a few blocks down and parked it right in front of her grandparents door. I let myself in the house and was just in time for the present opening. Well I was pretty excited and nervous about the gift, but was also very cold since riding a scoot even a few blocks in -15C weather is enough to chill anyone right down. When it came time for me to give her my gift, I gave her a fake present (empty box with a card in it). The card instructed her to grab a coat and head outside. She was very curious and confused, but when she saw her new scooter she was so excited. She was completely caught by surprise and was so excited. She kept looking at it from the window throughout the day, unfortunately it was winter and she couldn't even take it out for a ride. So fast forward a few months and she got her motorcycle license, as you must get a full motorcycle license for any vehicle over 50cc. Although she was kind of intimidated by the motorcycle she had to learn on at the course, she did enjoy it. She was the best student in the class as she just seemed to do things naturally. We had the license and insurance completed and it was time to ride. She was nervous on the roads at first but she is absolutely LOVING her little beast. We went on a few riders where I would follow on my RSTD and she looked like a natural. Now I know that there is so much talk about when you get a motorcycle you will end up spending even more on the accessories, well the same is true with the scooter world. So far she got a really nice retro helmet, a beautiful stylist Italian scooter trench coat with hidden armor (just looks like a stylist jacket), a wicker basket for the back of the scoot, new chrome turn signals, a stereo system with an ipod near the front foot area, and a soon to arrive 150cc engine upgrade kit that is 'bolt on'. I keep joking with her that it looks like a baby Venture with all this stuff on it. She is loving it, but I just recently noticed an interesting and perhaps scary incident where I went to the garage and noticed that she was sitting on my RSTD playing around with the controls... hmmm.... Anyways, I thought that I'd share a few things with you guys, maybe you might consider trading in your Ventures for the Baby Model... New White Wall Tires - $30 each Monthly Insurance - $26 (first time rider, less after 2 years) Gas Fillup - $4 Gas MPG - 85~100 Now I know it doesn't compare to the Cadillac's that we ride, but after taking this thing out a few times I can tell you that it is a blast! Before Shot - The damage and torn seat is not visible from this angle. Clever photography by the seller. http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/before02.jpg Christmas Day and one happy new Yamaha owner! http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03771.jpg Front shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03720.jpg Side shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03722.jpg Other side shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03726.jpg Rear end shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03734.jpg Front end shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03733.jpg Handle bars http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03730.jpg

I replaced my tires with new E3's. The rear was almost shot so discarded it but I kept the front coz there's still lots of wear left. It's a Bridgestone Spitfire II. Now, my son has an '03 Sportster 1200 and his rear tire is shot. Turns out my front tire is the same size as his rear tire. The question is, can a guy put a front tire on the rear? ... and if so, should I change the rotation direction?

Was considering on doing the hole punch thing this week as shown. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=302 So now that this has been a while how are folks doing with this mod? My tank is already removed anyway so I myself will give it a shot! Jeff (BOOM)

My husband was installing a replacement 'shock linkage"? (to raise the rear a little) today. When he removed the bottom bolt and the back tire was lowered (its on a stand), some fluid drained out of the shock absorber. He said it was half a shot glass full. Does that mean we have to replace this $ 400 shock??..RSV 02 midnight - than:shock3:x...JanJan

So, my 87 project is running a bit rough so I do what any shadetree guy would do and I look down the carbs when the bike is running. I noticed that all the slides are vibrating at different rates with some more active than others. It this a balance thing? Might be shot diaphragms but on a machine this old as soon as I open the carb covers to check for pinholes the diaphragms will be shot because I opened up the chambers. Is there a visual diagnostic other than pulling the slides that indicates diapgragm condition? Letting sleeping dogs lie and all that...

Got home today and Wolfie came out and told me her wolf got bit by a rattle snake. My response was bs we have been setting record lows for the last 2 weeks it was 8 degrees this morning. She says come here and sure enough snake pieces scattered around the yard she shot it twice with a 20 gauge shot gun. She saw it bite her wolf above his eye and later we discovered our 18+ year old lab got bit on the snout as well. I can't believe a snake is out already.

No nobody ran over me this time. I caught one of the nastiest bugs I've ever had. Cramps so bad I couldn't stand up let alone drive and must have threw up 25 times yesterday. Finally got Son-in-Law to take me to Emergency Room last night. They couldn't tell me what was wrong but got cramps stopped. I'm so weak I can hardley sit in chair. I took flu shot about 18 hrs before this started. Could that be it? Meds they gave me for cramps going to wear off and I need to go to Drug Store. I wish somebody would teach the Warden to drive. I really love that lady and she treats me like a king but has never wanted to drive. Just won't do it??

Very cool! A new Yamaha with a commercial which has a bunch of video shot right in my own backyard (so to speak). I'm not sure if it was all shot here in Utah, but a lot of it was. It looks like a great bike from what I have seen on the video. But, it definitely doesn't look like something a passenger would want to ride on much. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products/modelvideo/651/1//video.aspx

I noticed that my tour pack had some water in it from a rain storm the other night. I believe that the oring might be shot. Any one know where a guy can get a new one? 84 yamaha venture xvz1200

I know this is a long shot...but....I'm looking for the floppy disks to reinstall Windows 2000 on the computer that runs my weather station. I have tried the cd and it won't work. I even went in to setup and changed the boot order but the cd does not work. If you have the 3.5 inch floppies let me know and I'll make an offer. silverdeer
