  1. Hey guys! Getting ready to do the valve job and carb clean and I see I've got cracks in my intakes. I know they don't leak and aren't known for failing but I'm thinking about putting some of that spray on rubber sealant just for good measure. You guys think this will be an effective fix or will I just be wasting my time/money?
  2. A friend of mine suggested that I use Hylomar universal blue non-hardening gasket sealant to cure my alternator cover leak. After looking it up on-line, it looks like it'd be great. Anybody ever use it? http://www.newmantools.com/chemicals/hylomar.htm Frank D.
  3. I'm getting ready to reassemble the cases on my 1st gen and have a question about using the Yamabond #4, Would I spread a thin layer of the sealant on just one of the case halves? I can see about 95% of this stuff squeezing out on the machined surfaces when the bolts are torqued. I noted that the service manual states to keep sealant at least 2mm away from bearings. Any suggestions here?
  4. Has anyone tried this product? Its a tire sealant and balancer. http://www.ride-on.com/
  5. I am about to replace both my tires with Avon Venoms. I have seen in different threads that some are using "Ride on" tire sealant. It appears to me that it could prevent an accident or at minimum prevent one from being stranded if the tire went down quickly. Has anyone had an experience with this product? Good or bad. Would you recommend it? Is it available at any stores or do you have to buy on line? Lots of questions I know. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks JR
  6. Need your help! Did a preventative stator change on my 89 VR getting ready for a 3000+ mile trip since the original stator had almost 60k miles on it and I run a lot of extra lights. Installed the new stator (high output) in under two hours and was feeling really good about it until I got back from a 30 minute ride and had oil dripping from the kickstand. The leak has definitively been isolated to the bottom most seam of the side cover (between the rearmost two bottom bolts) and is making a real mess. Have changed the gasket now 3 times... once without sealant and twice more with two different types of sealant (yamalube, RTV gasket sealer) applied with no luck. There are no cracks, scratches or dings, and both the side cover and case look square with a straight edge applied. This bike was tight and dry until the cases were split... and as an old aircraft mechanic leaks drive me CRAZY! Thinking about double gasketing... any other ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!
  7. Folks, The manual calls for sealant on the 2 mating surfaces of the final drive and the drive shaft tube, but it did not look like any was on mine when it was disassembled. What sealant do you use when reassembling, if any? Is there something other than the Yamaha brand that would work if you do seal those surfaces? Thanks
