I have put 130,000 miles on my 83 and have had two different transmissions in it so I feel I know it pretty well. The oil I have mostly used has been Valvoline 10-40 and have also run Amsoil for motorcycles and some Valvoline Synthetic. This past oil change I put in the Rotella and even though the gear whine has not been real noticeable in the past, I am positively convinced that the whine is even less noticeable than before. I know that this may not help the whine that is associated with the clutch basket, but it may help the straight cut gear whine that is normal in these bikes. I was also wondering if any others that went to the Rotella oil feel this way? I got this oil at O'Rilleys for about $13 a gallon. RandyA

FYI for those that use Rotella its on sale at Advance Auto right now, at least in South FL market. Gallon jug of T6 full synthetic 5w-40 is 22.99 (reg 26.99) and the 15w-40 Dino ROtella is 12.99 for a gallon (Reg 17.99). RSTDdog

HI I am new to the forum, looks great. I am wondering if anyone has used Castrol Synthetic oil in the bikes. I have a 99 Venture and am considering using it. I have been using Rotella T 5-40, but am wondering if Castrol would work as well.

Since Rotella (Blue Bottle)is not specifically labeled for use in motorcycles will using it void the warranty?

ROTELLA T and ROTELLA T Synthetic are universal oils, providing lubrication and protection for four-stroke diesel and many four-stroke gasoline engines (but not aviation piston engines). We do not performance test these products in motorcycle engines, so any comment must be based on oil performance specifications and oil chemistry. Most motorcycle engine manufacturers recommend oil by API Service Category. Some, like Harley (when their brand of oil is not available), recommend API CG-or CH-4 oils, which are diesel performance categories. Others recommend API SL, SJ, or earlier Service Category oil for gasoline engines. Where the engine oil sump also serves the wet clutch and transmission, oils without friction modifiers are usually recommended. Both ROTELLA T products exceed all the API Service Category performance requirements mentioned above. They are formulated principally as heavy-duty diesel oils. Compared to most passenger car gasoline engine oils, they have superior oxidation resistance, superior extreme pressure wear protection, superior high temperature-high shear viscosity, and superior detergency and dispersancy - and they contain NO friction modifier additives. If I were to choose oil for a motorcycle engine, these are qualities I would want. Clearly, ROTELLA T Multigrade and ROTELLA T Synthetic would be better choices for motorcycle engines than passenger car only oils. Without knowing the composition of, and performance specifications met by, "motorcycle oils", it is not possible to compare the ROTELLA T products performance to them.

After the issue I had last night with the gas shooting from my tail pipe I of couse had to change the oil. I check the owner manual and it list 20w40 as the recommended oil. So I checked Wally World, Menards, and Advanced Auto. No one had it. ended up with Quaker State 10w40. Hope this is ok. I did see Rotella 15w10 thought about that, but I was thinking Rotella is for deisel engines.

My brothers father-n-law (Bill) has an 07 Midnight TD. He called me and stated that his bike was getting hot. Very hot on his legs, almost unbearable. Since then he spoke to a Yamaha mechanic about what he had. The mechanic asked if he made any changes recently. Bill informed him that he switched his oil from Yamalube to Rotella T 15-40. The mechanic said that, the oil was his problem. Today he changed the oil back to Yamalube and said that it is no longer running hot. So basically he states that the heat was coming from the lower end of the engine. I know many folks on this forum use oil other than Yamalube, so have anybody had this experience before? I am running Rotella in my 07 TD, and have not noticed any issues.

Rotella T6 FULL Synthetic. I understand this is now within the specs of the Yamaha Warranty and can now be used on the Venture. So my questions are: (1) How many of you have used the Rotella T6? (2) If you are getting it at Walmart, what OIL FILTER are you getting there? (3) Are there ANY special considerations when changing the oil. It looks pretty straight forward...1 draing plug, and one oil filter. Thanks. Wally

Trying to get a feel of how far we go between changes. I have used the Rotella about 10k now, changing every 5k. I am sure I could go a little longer, but by 5k, I begin to hear my shifitng. Fresh oil = less noise and smoother shifting.

I have been using Rotella T 5W-40 Synthetic (Blue Bottle) in the past. I went to Walmart, Fleet Farm, and local auto stores but all I can get now is the Rotella T6 5W-40 Synthetic. The T6 has API Service CJ-4/SM where as the T has API Service CI-4/SL in the circular API logo. Has anyone used the T6 oil? Thanks Zeke

I see many from this site use the Rotella T oil, which by the way is a very good oil for the diesel engines. But I also saw where someone said don't use the energy conserving oils. The new jug of Rotella I bought from WalMart shows triple protection. It meets the requirement of SM, SL, and SJ. All of these requirements where mentioned not to use because they are the new energy conserving oils. Before I change oil in my NEW VRS (08) to replace the (04) VRS Midnight I high sided last fall, I wanted to check. It seems that this oil also will go by the wayside for us. Or can someone help, and tell us different??? I hope so, was going to start running the Rotella from now on but!!! Hope someone can shed some light on this. Many thanks rangerider Drive fast, but I quit taking chances!!!

Not trying to start a "which is best" thread. Just looking for some input from Rotella users. Do you use RotellaT 15W40 or Syn 5W40? What did you use before swithcing to Rotella? Did you notice any change in idle or shifting? Same change intervals? How long have you been using Rotella (miles)? Right now I use Mobil 1 at 5000 mile intervals. Bike has 19,200 in 19 months. Take out winter months and it is more like 19,200 in 15 months. Thanks

OK, in reading another thread, I read that someone suggested using Rotella motor oil for diesel trucks in their VR. Is this a correct and proper thing to do?

Just changed my oil in my 87 Venture and got it down the road and started to have clutch slippage. I have reserched the site and have seen that you are not to use auto grade oil ( I used Castrol 10w-40 auto). Can I simply drain this oil out and replce it with Rotella Diesel oil or are the friction plates ruined and need replacing? Please let me know. Thanks!!!
