  1. I am having a new roof put on. They started today. Now that they have half of the roof off It is totally apparent that the builder of the house back in 1890 was a pinhead. The roof deck boards just end where they end, the next board butted up and on they went. The joints between boards are not centered on the rafters. When they got to the end of the roof they took whatever the cutoff was and butted it up against the next board. Even if the cut off was not long enough to reach 2 rafters, there are many spots where both ends of a board are floating and it is just nailed to ONE rafter in the middle of the board, it tips when pressure is applied to either end. Of course as to be expected the bottom 2 boards are rotten. But I had expected that with a 120 yo house that had 3 layers of roof on it. The contractor gave me 3 choices. 1. Tear off all the wood and redeck. $5,000 2. Cover the whole roof with 1/4 OSB to give a flat solid nailing surface. $2,500 3. Repair all of the loose ends with new boards at $5.00 per foot installed. Estimate of 100-300 feet. How many total repairs will be needed will not be known till the other half of the roof is torn off. $500 - $1,500. The budget is tight on this job so I went with option 3. I hope I did the right thing, or at least not to bad of a thing.
  2. Went out this morning stood up on garage roof and shoes started to slide. Sat down and it did slow me down. A little. Right off the edge!! Lucky I was on the lowest corner only about 8 feet. Landed on both feet. Should have tried to land on the good one. Bad one didn't care for that but seems OK other than complaining a lot. I'll be limping pretty good for a while again but I've had plenty of practice. Thankfull I'm not really hurt. Easy fall if I had to do it. Gonna let Jeff have this falling stuff. I can't hide mine. Oh Well back to roof. I didn't get any pics of me coming off there. Guess I'll have to have the Warden stand by with camera.
  3. We have lived in our home for over 32 years, and have never had problems with squirrels damaging our home. We live in a wooded area, and are used to seeing many critters. The other night before we headed to KC. we heard a loud noise which seemed to be on the roof. This is not unusual because we hear loud noises all the time, usually a squirrel or two running on the roof. When we returned from our trip, we are in bed trying to sleep. There was a noise coming from inside our bedroom wall. It sounded like a 10 pound mouse. Ron went around the house to see where this critter could possibly got in. He found an area where the trim wood had been chewed open. Ron sealed this area temporarily until he could fix it better. Next day the killer squirrels had blew another area of trim wood off and now there is a hole 4 to 6 inches in diameter. The crazy thing is, we have lived here all these years and have never had a problem with squirrels damaging our home. Anybody know Billy the Exterminator? Yama Mama

So a man was on a roof, and jumped off. Where was he when he jumped?
  5. The thread on burning coal got me to thinking. By now you should all know that is dangerous. My house was built in 1886, it is a small 2 story with a 12 12 pitch roof so there is a good size attic. It is getting real close to time to replace the roof. Right now the only thing still using the chimney is the gas hot water heater in the basement. That water heater is around 25 years old so I am thinking of replacing it with a direct vent type so that nothing is using the chimney. I would like to then take down the chimney so that the new roof can cover the old chimney hole in the peak of the roof. My question is; In these old houses did they use the chimney as a structural member? Or can I just take it down and only have to do some wall and floor patching. It sure would be nice to get that space back in the kitchen and the hall where you have to turn sideways to squeeze past the chimney and it is impossible to get a box spring or anything else with a dimension of more than 20 inches into the bedroom at the end of the hall. That eliminates most dressers and beds. with the chimney gone it will be a 40 inch wide hall and room to swing the corner with even a king size box spring. Anyone ever do a chimneyectomy on an old house?
  6. I had an ice dam form and start leaking into my livingroom overnight, we awoke to find our couch and carpet soaked, and a hole in the drywall ceiling We may get a small ice dam every now and then, but , with all the snow we have had and a little freezing rain, it had blocked the ridge venting on the roof allowing it to create the ice. Just a little reminder to those that have the ridge venting, look at your roof, if you can't see that the ridge vents are clear, you may be next to have this damage inside your home.
  7. Okay, I have a 96 Fleetwood Terry RV travel trailer model 29S and I need a roof repair. Getting water in it, I have sealed every spot, still leaks. Probably looking at a entire roof replacement, anyone here know how to do that? Anyone here do it for a living or can do it as a side job and any idea what it would cost? Trailer is stored at Pirateland at Myrtle Beach. Trailer is about 31' long no slides. Ideal plan would be to come down and get the trailer to a site for a day or two and let the repairs take place. Thanks in advance, Don

Hi All I have a frend that I help out from time to time oled guy. Mostly he calls when his roof needs shoveling from snow. Well he called last night so this morning I went over. My frend is in the driveway clearing snow with a walk behind snowblower. No big deal Ive seen him do this before. I start to clear his roof now he is pulling the snow off the roof with a roof rake. You may wounder where Im going going with this story by now. Well we get the roof done and start to chat. He has just had his 99th birthday! He lives alone drives cuts his own grass clears most of hi own snow and seems to get around just fine. I can only hope I see 99 much less do all the things he does. Bull463
  9. Hey Bubber...You should've shoveled the roof. Or maybe tried your old snow blower to help out. Now you'll have to send the Missus with her sewing needle. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Unbelievable-video-of-Metrodome-collapse-from-in?urn=nfl-294816 Has that happened since the first couple years after they built it? 10. I am looking to get a direct vent type gas hot water heater. Most likely a 50 gallon. Does anyone here know what brands or features I should look for, or steer clear of? This is kind of what I am looking for. My house needs a new roof and the 30 year old gas hot water heater is the only thing using the chimney, so if I get a direct vent water heater then I can have the crumbling chimney taken down to below the roof line at the time they do the roof and save the cost of rebuilding the chimney or later patching the new roof. I am wide open for comments, suggestions or even snide remarks.
  11. AND I WASN'T EVEN RIDING IT !! I cop out of Bongobos fall foliage ride because I had a steep roof to reshingle. To get a rope over the roof I used my fishing rod and cast over the roof from the back. I then tied the line to the rope to pull it over. I am almost over the top when the large rope snags and I snap my fishing line. So, while I am in the back yard tying a new weight to the line to cast over, my neighbour decides to put the ladder up then carry the rope up over the ridge (like I said it is a steep roof) as he try's to walk up the roof he slips. From the back yard I hear a loud crash and relizing suddenly what my crazy neighbour attempted to do I run around to the front expecting to see broken bone's all over my front lawn. As I come through the gate the first thing I see is the ladder laying across my motorcycle, then the eave trough ripped off the house and lastly my neighbour on the ground getting back up on his feet. Don't ask me how it was possible but he did not have a single mark on him, nor was he hurt in any way ( Thank God for that ). My bike on the other hand has another nice scrape on my new paint job and the seat has a six inch cut across it. The main thing of course is that (1) He did not get hurt and (2) I did not have to give mouth to mouth to that sruffy old face of his. By the way its a brown seat for an 89 VR just in case there Is one floating around looking for a new home:big-grin-emoticon:
  12. Just had a BIG Tstorm blow through here ... I didn't get out and batten down the hatches ... blew wooden rockers and stuff off the porch (at least it didn't blow them through the windows!! I should of got them in) but I think we still got a roof on the house and the fence is mostly up!! Got to go check the garage!! I see it's either there or heading your way Mini!!
  13. I got to do something this year. I'm thinking about starting a split rail fence above the road bank. This will give me something to do on the weekends while camping.I will need about 300 ft when I'm done. Mamamo has other landscaping projects she can do over the next few years. Hopefully in a couple years we will have the old house torn down and can start on a post pillar foundation. Were going to build a rustic butt and pass style log cabin. I'm talking cut and debark the logs, rebar pinned together complete with tin roof. Ours will be a little bigger then this one a goldwing rider is building in Oklahoma. Check out there link. http://www.vernstreet.com/loghome.htm Here is a picture of the fence type. I may use locust post for this.
  14. I have had a dish for work at work for the last 4 years. I couldn't get dsl unless I paid $4000.00 to get it installed. I would have been the first in this area so I bought the dish. It sets on top of our 1 1/2 story building. This winter has been very bad with snow hanging up on the dish. I looked on the INTERNET to get ideas on how to solve this problem. Spraying with what ever W-D 40 or the likes. Came across some stuff called DOME MAGIC. Ordered the can and I got it back in November. I can't put it on yet cause the temp. needs to be between 60 and 110. Fat chance of that happening for awhile. I had to go up and brush the snow off again today after Saturday's snow fall. The roof is pitched and I fall every time I come back down. The last part of the roof is not pitched very much so I don't worry about going all the way down to the ground. What a pain this is to deal with. I should move the dome to the side of the building where I could reach it from the ground but there is really not a good place to do that. Does anyone know of something you can put on in the middle of winter that would make the snow slide off?
  15. This is Lyle Johnson's (BRScooter) son. We just went through a devastating hurricane here in Baton Rouge. He had a huge pecan tree fall on his living room roof while he was in the room. However, the tree damaged the exterior of the residence but it did not come through the roof. Nearly 100% of Baton Rouge is without power and he most likely will not have lights for 3 to 4 weeks. He & all of his family are safe, but hot & tired. As soon as he gets back online, he will be back communicating with ya'll.
  16. I have a flat garage roof and 8 years ago I had the tar and gravel surface replaced by a rolled rubber roof with a granular surface. The roof just started leaking along one of the seams, maybe a 3' length. I have read that just coating the area with tar will eventually deterioriate the rubber roof itself. Other than calling in a roofer, is there anything that I could do to stop the leak myself? :mo money:
  17. Will it hit last night he in Van Buren Arkansas. Tennis ball size hell. my truck looks like it has the chicken pox,the back of my house has holes in it, and the new roof I had put on 2 month ago has holes and we all know what that means yep wet celling. The good news is no one hurt. well I will try to make the eat N meet (OK at pops) that may be what I need right now. Here I go black jack in hand to the roof. :7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]:
