Sooooo, changing the rear brake pads I have discovered the pistons are stuck. Had the rear master cylinder opened and still couldn't push the pistons in, just barely moved. Questions: -Before rebuilding, what if I try a bigger hammer so to speak, and C-clamp these into position? -How hard is it to rebuild? Will I have to bleed the brake? -Saw used rear calipers on Ebay for $50, no idea if the pistons compress. Other thoughts, ideas? At least it's raining so, I am not missing riding today! Cheers,

Purchased a water pump rebuild kit for my 83 a while back (from Rick at Buckeye Performance) and am now getting around to install. Got everything torn down (it did still have the plastic impeller – near 80k and it was not in bad shape, but good to have the new one in hand). I have cleaned up all the surfaces and am ready to assemble the new parts. Is there a recommended sequence for installing the seals and bearing? I am thinking it would be best to install the mechanical seal (the one with the spring, on the coolant side of the assembly) first, since it is supposed to have the Yamabond4 around the inner edge. The manual shows a ‘special tool’ for pressing that piece in place– any hints for a suitable substitute? After that, then install the oil seal and bearing? Or vice-versa? Or am I over-thinking this? Any advice would be appreciated. And... I did not purchase a new thermostat - seems to be working fine - is it any more difficult to do it later if it becomes a problem?

Does anyone know where to get carb rebuild kits. I am having a hard time finding them. I called my local Yamaha dealers and they said it is to old. The only things on Ebay are full sets of used carbs. I an inn Grand Haven, Michigan.

I have read all the information on first generation water pumps. My 86 has a small amount of coolant that has dripped out the weep hole on the water pump. I assume it will get worse as time goes on. Bike has 84,000 or so on it. It left about a tablespoon of coolant on the floor since I rode it about a month or so ago. What are the chances of a catastrophic failure, that is similar to old automotive water pumps with graphite seals? If I do rebuild it, should I change both the mechanical seal and the oil seal while I have it apart? I think it is the mechanical seal that stops the impeller shaft from leaking. If I rebuild, I plan on new o rings on the elbow and thermostat housing.

Hello everyone i had a couple of questions regarding my new to me 87 venture...but first some background. I got the motorcycle on trade from another guy who got it on trade from another guy who traded it for a push-mower so i knew nothing of the history. i have now realized although the bike was running when i got it it was being held together by hopes and dreams. I have since taking the bike down to the frame and i am rebuilding it. i have rebuilt the rear swing arm, sanded and painted the frame, rebuilt the drive shaft, cleaned the carbs, modded the fuse box to ACTs, rebuilt the left and right side control switches, and now I'm down to the fuel system i took the tank off (which was the biggest pain in the butt for a motorcycle i have ever encountered) and it was full of a metallic sloshing sound so i took the petcock off to drain the tank and of course it was full of rust so I'm going to clean and reseal the tank but i the petcock has 2 filters on them that are ruined so now my question is. where can i get replacement filters? I cant find any online. what else would you guys recommend i rebuild on the bike while its apart? I was thinking about doing the fork seals but they don't leak, also I read on the forum that you can see the date on the tires to see if they are old but i couldn't find the date on the tires should i just replace them anyway? thanks in advance for all the help

Hi all, been a member for awhile now, and lot's of great info. I have an 86 Venture, and have a few questions as I'm gettin the old girl ready for another summer of touring. Tires- I'm looking at putting a set of Dunlop Elite 3'2 on, anyone else have these and how are they? I ride alot of 2-up, but like to scrape the pegs once in awhile too. Carbs- Time to rebuild, I notice the lh rear is wet, and the performance/mileage seems off. Is there anyone who offers a rebuild kit? I've read alot about changing the diaphrams, but most are old posts. Is there somewhere I can buy diaphram kits without breaking the bank? How do I get the map with the diff color provinces and states of where you've ridden? I've looked everywhere. (off topic I know, but I think it's cool) Thanks everyone, just read the post about the maintenance day and I'm gonna talk to the wife about makin another road trip, maybe we'll see some of you there.

My father passed away a few years back and this was his bike it probably has been parked almost 7 8 years... I would love to rebuild this just because it was his and he loved to ride and so do I ... I have lots of questions... But lets start slow... First I have never rebuilt a bike... And second I have no keys so once I get the key situation handled where should I start this long road project... I know it's not going to happen over night I don't have unlimited funds but I am willing to do the work

Today I picked up DenDen's 83 Standard. Some folks here know how well he took care of this bike. He wanted to part ways with the bike since he no longer rides so he made me a deal I couldn't refuse. There's some work to be done of course since it hasn't been on the road in about 4 years. maybe more, but that bike is sure in very good shape for a 29 year old. There's no broken plastic except for one tab on a side panel which should be easy to fix since the tab is there. Mechanically I'll need to fix a water leak somewhere below the radiator, rebuild the forks, & either rebuild the rear master cylinder or replace it, & replace a 8 year old battery. As far as I know at this point those are the things needing attention. Got a few extra parts he tossed in as well. I don't expect to put it on the road till spring so during the next few months & winter I'll be going over this bike bringing the old girl back to pristine condition once again. Larry

Rear shock on my 88 is not holding pressure
Guest posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Just bought an 88 and found the rear shock will not hold pressure. Is there a rebuild option or fix for this problem? If not is anyone parting out a bike or anyone that would have an extra they might let go. The price for the bike was to good to be true, i should have known:depressed: I have already rebuild front shocks and replaced one anti-dive module. Just found out the new replacements from progressive is ~$400. This is much more than I had budgeted to get the bike on the road. Any help is much appericated -
Wanted to see your guys thoughts, really could use a new front tire on the cheap. Saftey? Ect http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=370543493869&cmd=VIDESC&index=6&nav=SEARCH&nid=59140691589 84 VR in process of budget rebuild Bags Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk

I have a replacement clutch master cylinder in hand and have a rebuild kit on order from the dealer. I just have a few questions. 1. How do i separate the electrical wire (thats a strange lokking connector)? 2. wheni look into the bowl, i see 2 holes on the bottom. One seems to be plugged (not sure if there is a valve there or not). Is that normal? 3. How difficult is it to rebuild it? Should i leave it to the shop? (This years bike repair budget is long gone) 4 . What is in the $39 dealer rebuild kit? http://venturers.org/Forum/download/file.php?avatar=11210_1329974423.jpg alvald Posts: 226 Joined: Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:32 pm Member Number: 3088 City: San Jose State or Province: CA Country: USA PTBAV since: 2010 Private message E-mail alvald

Question for the Venture Gurus How should I store the parts bike engine? I'm going to build a crate for it & remove the carb bank. How should I store the engine? with oil in the crackcase? with the stator attatched? and so on... I appreciate the suggestions. It's has 60K on it. It will probably be a rebuild project once I move to Tn. Right now its just sitting in the frame w/o wiring.

:fingers-crossed-emoHi guys I'm a newbee with a problem I need help with. I bought a 97 RSTD with 26000mi that was sitting up for two years. It starts but runs real ruff(suprise) I want to rebuild the carbs and since I'm adding aftermarket exhaust I want to re-jet. I was told I need to change the orings because of the ethenol in fuel these days, 1. Where is the best place to buy the rebuild kit? 2. What size jets do I need? 3. Is that true about the orings and if so will the orings in the kit do? If not where can I buy the orings? Also this bike pulls left hard at very slow speed. I know that all bikes have their quirks but, Is this normal? Any other suggestions will be appreciated Thanks for any help. John

I know my 84 has Mikuni Carbs. Is there a series, model, or part number for them? I'm trying to locate which rebuild kit to get and secondly (and most importantly) some sort of instruction sheet on how to rebuild. I have seen something on Mikuni SBN seres but I can't tell from the pix if this is what my 84 has.

My clutch is REALLY slipping, when the engine is cold. It slips a little when it gets hot if I try to make it slip (shift hard and wind it out). For some reason, I don't have much luck searching this forum. I am sure this has been discussed to death. But, what is the best thing to do, to rebuild the clutch; and where is the best place to get the parts the cheapest. Do I need just new springs, new fiber plates, or is there some kit that has every thing I need? Thanks. dana

I ride a 96 RSTC and have an extra set of carbs that I have the urge to rebuild. It is a project that I am not sure that I can do but thought that I would try anyway. I have done quite of few jobs that I didn't know step one about but with the help of this forum I was able to accomplish. Are there any good tutorials out there and what if any type of kit would you recommend. Thanks Bob

I've got the rebuild kit...anyone rebuilt a clutch master cylinder? I have to rebuild my 96 royal star clutch master cylinder...just looking for any helpful hints to get the job done! Thanks gunk:shock3:

About a month ago there was a post about a notchy feeling in the break and clutch and I believed I solved it with a fluid change. well its back and very annoying. I will hit the brale and its not enough to stop so I squeeze harder and it notches from firm to death grip and makes me really dive. I wonder if my plunger has goulk on it that needs to be cleaned out or if the pistons in the calipers have corrosion. either way. can someone direct me to a good source for both rebuild kits?

well it apears that the final drive on my 91 vr is giving up its innards. Its making the dreaded howl when you let off the throttle. Kinda sounds like a dump trunk thats using the engine as a break. Does anybody have one that will fit they are willing to let go of. I have already talked to muffinman as to weather or not its the final or something else. I had the rear end and axle and drive shaft greased at the dealor and it didnt help. They even agreed that it was the final but no way Im paying $1500 for them to rebuild it.. anyways any help will be apreciated. Even if its ideas to check instead of replacement. Im even thinking of pulling the rear tire myself to regrease it . I have no idea what Im doing but Im sure with the help of this site and great members I can figure it out. Thanks in advance, David

I was informed today that the VR engages the front brake when you hit the brake foot pedal. I had no idea this was so. The mechanic said the full bike brake rebuild is quite a hassle and will take him 8 hours. Does this sound reasonable to you guys or should I just dive in and do it myself? Thanks

I need some "forks for dummies" info. Never taken a fork off a big bike like this in my life [and it has been a long one]. Looks like a big job if they come out the top when taken apart. Do they come apart from the bottom? I need to rebuild the left side which developed some major squeaks.

Does anyone have a supplier and part information for purchasing the just the rubber seals/washers on the piston in a 83 rear master brake cylinder, rather than buying a complete rebuild kit? Parts should be only a dollar or two. Does anyone have feedback on my cheapskate idea?

When I bought this VR a few weeks ago, I noticed that it was missing the bag lliners and toolkit. The owner had bought it this way so he didn't have them. I can go to the nearest luggage store and get bags that should fit reasonably well, so that shouldn't be a big problem (Yes, I know...famous last words!). I am about to assemble a tool kit myself (Come to think of it, I had to do that for my Triumph too.) and I was wondering if there is anything special I should keep in mind? I'm thinking in terms of known problems that can be easily fixed on the roadside if you have the right tools...I mean other than a full tear down and rebuild! For instance, the pick up coil on the older Triumph's were supplied by different companies and one of them had somewhat poor quality, so the coil likes to die fairly early in its life. Replacing it on the side of the road is doable in about 20 min. or so if you have the proper Allen wrench. So ... anything like that to keep in mind for the VR? Thanks in adavance.
