Sorry for posting here, but new to the site and trying to figure it out. I just bought an 06 Venture that needs a new kickstand. I was trying to post it in the Classified section but couldn't figure out how to post a new ad. I couldn't find a little button that said something like "post new thread" or anything. Any help for a noob would be great...and if anyone reading this has a kickstand in good condition they are trying to get rid of, please contact me! Thanks

I looked for a while and could never find a video of an off the line launch of the RSTD so I decided to make one awhile back in case someone else was curious. I know it’s not a rocket but I wanted to see what she would do nothing crazy, didn't dump the clutch or anything just seeing how it would compare before and after mods. Right now the only thing done to it is a set of BUB's but it seems quicker than the numbers I have been reading. So after I install the Dyna 3000 and V-Max swap I will post another video to see if there is any noticeable difference. If anyone knows of similar videos please feel free to share. So I started looking for my proverbial gas smell on my 89. Couldn't find anything wet or seeping. Decided to sync the carbs. I also checked the vacuum caps that I had to remove to hook up the sync hoses. I checked them by sucking on them and letting them stick to my lip. The last one I checked would not create suction. I could not find a crack, or leak, but it would not create suction. So, I replaced it with one off of the 87. after syncing and the new cap, boy...it runs smooth. Here is the question: When syncing the 89, the Carbtune reading was close to 32 on the scale. Is there a level/reading that it should be ? What/how is that adjusted ? I was able to balance the carbs and the sides. I was also playing with my 87 and even though I still have major carb issues on that one, The reading was around 20 on the scale. Now I know that the 87 could, and probably is not an accurate reading due to the carb issues, but it got me thinking about the readings.

This offer might be buried in a place where many members won't be reading so I'll put it out there, loud and clear... See post #37... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=710661#post710661

I picked up a digital multi-meter from Canadian Tire ($150) that came with an inductive pickup thinking for that price I'd have no problem doing an rpm reading for tune-ups. What I found was that the reading at idle would jump all over the place in the range of 300rpm to 1500rpm. Repositioning the pick-up didn't fix it and I couldn't get a steady reading. Need a recommendation on a tach/multi-meter that will give a steady reading and is usable for setting the idle on the RSV. I've seen the Harbor Freight on online ($30 - http://www.harborfreight.com/lcd-automotive-multimeter-with-tachometer-kit-95670.html ) but is it any good / usable? What is recommended or used by members ? I like the look of the Baron's 1" tach that mounts on the resevoir but don't want to spend that much money and don't really need a permanent unit. Just want a simple removable (multi-meter or dedicated to just rpm) tach for the times I synch my carbs.

Mike's doing his Visual Basic homework, advanced class. This is his 4th time taking a VB class between 4 different schools....let's say he generally knows what he's doing. Tonight he's struggling with working with CSV format. I know it's about reading from, writing to, and putting the database into a visual format like a contacts list in an address book, only it's dealing with car sales. The trouble he's having is with reading from the file. The textbook discusses how write the file. However it doesn't discuss the other part. He's emailed the prof, however it's unlikely he will hear from her until Monday. Homework is due tomorrow (Thurs) @11:59pm. Anyone want to lend him a hand? We'd both appreciate it, he's been pulling his hair out all day.

Thanks to 1-Up, Ken Derret for sending this to me.............laughed my you know what off..........I can see it now................ ONLY A MAN WOULD ATTEMPT THIS Just try reading this without laughing till you cry!!! Pocket Tazer Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife. A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Tazer for their anniversary submitted this: Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized Tazer. The effects of the Tazer were supposed to be short lived, with no long term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety...?? WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home... I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button and pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave. Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two AAA batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and then thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong? So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and Tazer in another. The directions said that: A one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; A two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; and A three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries. All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference (loaded with two itsy, bitsy AAA batteries); pretty cute really, and thinking to myself, 'no possible way!' What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best. I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side so as to say, ' Don 't do it stupid,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny lil ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad.. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and... HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. WHAT THE...!!! I'm pretty sure Hulk Hogan ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs! The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room. Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a Tazer, One note of caution: There is NO such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor! A three second burst would be considered conservative! A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparently I had crapped in my shorts, but was too numb to know for sure, and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head, which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my testicles and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return! PS: My wife can't stop laughing about my experience, loved the gift and now regularly threatens me with it! If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!

Does anyone know if swapping out the rear end for a vmax unit changes the speedometer reading? Thanks Mike

I've gotten to the point of reading the carbtune for the 1st time on my 91 VR. My instructions says to bring carb 1 & 2 to an even level then the same 3 & 4, then sync up 1&2 with 3&4. Well I got 1&2 evened out at around 27/33 and 3&4 to around 40. That could be the reason why my mileage was so bad. The carbs probably nevers been synced sinced left the dealers lot it only has 6700 miles on it. So I now have 1&2 pretty even with 3&4. Is the reading supposed to be pretty steady or is it supposed to bounce with about 6 units of variance? So right now all 4 are bouncing between 28 low and 34 high.

I have had an ongoing problem with my 84 VR. On start-up, it continually smokes black, and then when riding/cruising, keep getting small snaps from the breather box. From what I have seen, it backs up on two cylinders. Anyway, today I took my laser temp gun and checked all outlets to make sure I was getting a good reading. They all showed between 72 and 78 F. Started the bike up, and let it get warm. Just at idle, the two front cylinders were showing 180 - 190 F, and the two back ones were 84 -85 F. Does anyone have any good / bright ideas?

Normally after reading a post, upon refresh of browser that post is grayed out indicating has been read until a new post has been added. For the last couple of weeks, this greyout has only been happening speratically, typically after dropping off net then back on. This issue is only with my home PC, as still works fine at work. Ya, gota get on site every available chance:thumbsup: Using IE8/Vista. Appears some setting on my PC has changed. Not sure where to start. Does anyone know what the resistance reading should be from the starter cable connection to ground. My friend's '82 Yamaha has 0.2 ohms. This seems low to me. Can not find any info on reading in service manual. Frank

I am trying to do a search for posts containing the words "fuel filter". I don't want posts containing only the word "fuel" nor do I want posts containing only the word "filter". I want posts containing both words. How do I do this? And, if you're reading this and know the answer to the following, it would save me searching... What fuel filters (in-line, non stock) can I use instead of replacing the stock one (brand & part #)? I recall reading a while back where someone posted this info inclucing pics ... there was a metal one that I'm particularly interested in. My end result will be to install an in-line filter in the line under the seat and eliminate the stock filter. I've read several posts about this but for the life of me I can't find the ONE POST that lists the specific filter I want.

Well, it looks as though I have managed to while away a whole work day just reading about Freebird's maintenance day and looking at all the pics. Thanks Don for an awesome time (seems as though I was there just reading about it) and thanks everyone for the pics and for helping me get through a whole work day without doing a lick of work! :whistling:

I recently installed a voltage meter. It has a stock Stator. It has a non AGM battery. My question is what should be the approximate proper reading when: 1) At an idel of about 900 rpms 2) At running speed of say 65 mph in 5th gear 3) After a 24 hour charge with a 2 amp battery charger. What mininum voltage reading should I be concerned with. My 89 VR has the standard lights with the addition of a set of Wallmart Plattium Burners (55 watt). I heard many postings to swap out to 35 watts, with a couple that says that 55 watts are ok. I thought that if I knew the proper voltage reading that the reading would determine if I need to go to the 35 watts. I do have several LEDs on. 4 Turn signals, 2 additional stop lights all from Custom Dynamics, but being that they are not all the time and they are LEDs thought they would have mininum inpact.

I installed a Battery Bug voltage meter along with a new Deka battery on Friday last week. When I installed it the Battery monitor told me it was at 100% capacity. I keep it on the Battery Tender all the time. This morning when I went out to the garage it was reading 99% and I took the bike for a short ride and now it is down to 97% but is reading 14.2 volts charging. I'm wondering if this is normal or if there is something wrong? I installed a new high output stator two weeks ago as well. Is this normal? Or should it say 100% for quite a length of time before it begins to tell me that the battery capacity is going down or could I have a charging problem? Thank you for your comments and help. Chris

My last two takes of gas, I have only gotten about 30 mpg in my 05 RSTD. I have consistently gotten 35-38 as long as I have had the bike. Changed plugs and air filters last year, oil is good, nothing different in the bike or riding styles. Took a laser thermometer to measure the exhaust pipes right where the come out of the cylinders. The front two, which are hard to get a reading on because of the shielding, I think I got ~250. The rears I can see the actual pipe and got ~650 on each. Wondering if I just haven't gotten a good reading on the fronts, or if I am actually having some firing issues. Will pull the plugs and check, but wanted opinions on exhaust pipe temperatures.

1983 yamaha venture royale I am new here... currently checking valves ... bike has 63000 miles, and i don't think the valves have been done in a long time. 1. When I follow the yamaha manual's instructions and bring it to top dead center, or even anywhere near there, I can not get a gauge in to find the gap- could they seriously be that tight? 2. I am very confused about the valve shim tools available. I ordered one, following a thread on here saying that I could use a suzuki/yamaha tool. It is not here yet, but after reading some other threads I fear I have ordered an unnecessary piece of steel. What tool is commonly used... has anybody ever made one? 3. I have seen the great play by play on here on how to do this job, but the measurement task is a little fuzzy in the reading. Does anybody know of a video or pictures? Sorry, lots of pictures is how I learn. Thanks a lot.

I am aware that there was a change to the TCI & pickup coil set up on the 90-93 VR (after reading tech library) However all the manuals I have state that there is 5 wires coming from the pickup coil (stator)case & Ohms should read 100-125. This 90VR has 6 wires (colors not the same) & unable to get any Ohms reading. Question: Should there be Ohm reading at the 6 prong plug & what should that be? Is there a way to test the TCI? I have spark & compression with rebuilt carbs will not fire or run (its like the timing is off) When the plugs are pulled there seems to be a film but not soaked with gas. Fuel pump fills float bowls & shuts off, pilot screws are turned out 2-2 1/2 turns, choke plungers all work. Lacks gas flow. Is there a need to prime carbs? I am grasping at straws. :canada:

Which one of you grumpy, old crusty farts wrote the letter to American Motorcyclist (AMA magazine) complaining about those young whippersnappers ruining the riding world? Actually, it was a good letter with valid points (with a picture of a beautiful Venture). However, the first reading of the letter had kind of a 'git off my lawn' tone. After reading it again, he was right. RR
