  1. The good lord blessed me with a lot of things but not long legs (29" inseam)...LOL I've been in a few unavoidable areas where I have had to back my bike up and it is impossible for me to do so while on the bike. Yesterday I found myself with the kick stand down, placing my backside up against the passenger grab rail and it worked pretty good... Got me to thinking, this is exactly how you pick up a bike that is layed over, using your legs! Now I need to find something i can bolt on to the grab rail or the side of the bike that gives me a little more surface to push against.. Any suggestions?
  2. FYI I went to Wally World and bought a bottle holder for a bycycle with a handle bar mount and put on the hand rail my better half is thrilled. Very simple and cost me $9.99 for the material.
  3. I need help with my Saddle Bag Rail Reflectors on my RSV. The reflector on the right side rail of the saddle bag broke. I have been searching for a replacement but cannot find one anywhere. Does any one have any suggestions. I have attached a photo to show what I am looking for. Any help is appreciated. Dwight
  4. Just taking a shot in the dark. Does anyone have any young ladies riding gear that your children might have outgrown that you might want to sell? My Daughter just turned 13 last Friday and shes 5ft tall and as skinny as a rail. I need to pick up riding gear for her and was hoping to save a little money. If you happen to have anything just PM me. Thanks....Karl
  5. One of the forward bolts in my saddlebag trim rails vibrated out and I lost an end cap. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement? Thanks!
  6. One of my saddle bag rail bolts loosened up, and the bolt and end cap are missing-in-action. Any chance somebody out there has these parts on the shelf from a rail that that got wrecked in a drop, or who knows what happened??? Pictured below are the 2 pieces I'm missing, the bolt and the cap that is ahead of the saddle bag guard. The bolt goes thru the cap and the guard, and into the front end of the bag rail. 2006 RSV, by the way. Thanks for looking. 7. Next Saturday. Oct. 16th., weather permitting, am going to take a fall leaf ride in s.central WV. thru Williams River then Snowshoe, Cass Rail road and on way back, maybe the scenic highway... You are all invited...
  8. Was curious if its possible to replace the trans gears without pulling the motor? I know you have to split the case but I do see the one side frame rail comes apart. I have limited room in my garage, so even if it takes longer thats fine, i have all winter.
  9. I know this issue has come up on more than one occassion, but I'm still confused. I have gone through two sets of saddlebag side rails (heavy rust). Looking at the ones on the Yamaha web site, I think I might have bought some sort of knock-off rails in the past. On both of my sets, and the photos I've seen on this forum and elsewhere, the two horizontal rails appear to be the same diameter. In the Yamaha web site photo, the top rail seems to be considerably thinner than the bottom one. Also, on the web site photo, the point where the two horizontal rails meet seems to be much closer to the front. On mine, that point seems to be several inches further back than theirs. Finally, when looking at them from behind, the vertical part where the upper rail comes down and meets the lower rail seems to be different. On mine, that short vertical portion is close to the inside of the bike, causing the curvature to rub against the bottom of the rear turn signals. In the Yamaha photo, it appears that the vertical portion of the top rail comes down in to the middle of the rear portion of the lower rail. I think this would allow for some space between the rear turn signal and the curvature, so the two would not touch. I guess my question is this... Are there knock-offs out there being sold as genuine Yamaha saddlebag side rails, or did Yamaha change the design at some point, leaving the photo of the old style on the website? I contacted the local dealer about this, but of course, they didn't know. I want to make sure that if I order another set, I don't end up with same result; rusted, unusable rails. Anyone out there know?
  10. I'm looking for saddlebag lid rails for my 88VR. Ebay currently has a single right side rail only. Does anybody know where I might find a set?
  11. Dan is working on another product for our Ventures. No info is going to be given out right now but.....if someone has an old saddle bag rail, be it rusted, or scratched, or damaged we could use it as a mock up piece. We need the ones that wrap around the outside of the bag. More shiny stuff to follow.....
  12. Ordering a bunch of Parts (Santa (wife) was very good to me)...Plus I quite Smoking back in Mid Sept....and now using the money normally spend on cigs for chrome....Showed the wife the Yamaha "Lid Rail"....She said they look cheap...Are these the Harley lid rails a bunch of you folks are using...Saw them on bikes in the Pic's Forum. Any mods to the bags other than holes need to be made. George In Virginia..
  13. is there any other company besides DiamondR that sells saddlebag rail trim lights?
  14. I don't know if something similar been done and shared on this forum before, but I thought I would share my attempt to light up my RSV. I am starting with the saddlebag rails, by cutting, bending and installing a piece of acrylic into the rail opening and attaching several LED pods on each. I used a small heat gun to form the acrylic into the shape of the saddlebag rails and trimmed both pieces to fit into the respective rail opening. Only took three (3) tries to get an acceptable specimen, which I used to create a cardboard template for future pieces. After trimming to fit, I fitted the insert with chrome body molding which presents an almost custom appearance once the piece is inserted inside the chrome rail opening. The chrome molding fits just about perfectly, except for some minor puckering on the curve edges. A little splicing and adhesive will make for an acceptable finish. I found some 3/4" plastic clamps at Menards which I will fit around the rail and affix to the acrylic to hold it in place. A coat of primer and a coat of chrome paint makes the clamp almost inconspicuous. I ordered a set of dual mode amber LED lights from a seller on ebay. A lot of eight lights was $38.00 plus $7.55 shipping. The dual mode will allow me to use the lights as combination running and turn signal lights. I was able to put four (4) lights on each acrylic insert, i.e., 3 on the side and 1 in the rear. Each light is affixed to the acrylic with two (2) small screws. Below are several pictures of the insert with lights in place. I will install them on the bike tomorrow, if I can stop riding the bike long enough. I will take more pictures then. The total costs for this project was less than $75.00 and could easily be done in an afternoon by the more experienced craftsman. I estimate my total time commitment through the end of this project will be approximately 12 hours, including making inserts for my brother-in-law's RSV. He is going with a different light configuration on the acrylic inserts. My next step is to move up to the trunk and fabricate a piece of acrylic to extend down from the trunk where I will affix LEDs that will be used as a combination running light and braking light. I would appreciate any thoughts, concerns and suggestions. jarrejx
  15. Do you think this will fit a venture? http://www.saber-cycle.com/store/Saddlebag1.html
  16. Ijust bought some nice chrome rotor/caliper covers and fender rail for my 88 1300. These parts came off of a 1200, the caliper covers look different as the bolt holes are not the same. Looks like the fender rail will fit but how about the rotor covers? I figured they were all the same, but I think I am wrong. So what are the difference between the 1200 and 1300 front ends??? Kim
  17. Found time to install the rails this morning. Yup, had to redrill the mounting holes in the rail. 30 minute job into several hours. They are now even and set just right. Thank you to the members who posted this needed fix. Yamaha could do much a much better job of quality control. hh http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t51/runeight/0043-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t51/runeight/0062.jpg
  18. Greetings. Just finished a kind of a neat "Fender Trim Rail" modification on my Royal Star and wanted to share it with you. I had bought a "Mascot", the "Chrome Fender Tip" as well as the "Fender Trim Rail" even though the dealer told me that the "Rail and the Tip" would not look good together - the fender would look overdressed and the Trim Rail would hide/shade the fender tip so there was no logic in putting both on the bike. Me being a stubborn eskimo demanded all items and said that I would at least have an option of what to put on. To cut a long story short I saw when trying these on that the dealer was right - with both items the front fender looked overdressed and the Chrome Fender Tip was barely visible since the trim Rail hid it almost completely. But have a look at the pictures. I think I came up with quite a nice looking solution for putting all items on with a little modification to the trim Rail. How to do this is easy or as follows: Cut off the lower tubing of the Trim Rail. Have a workshop with a lathe make an insert that goes into the tubing but has the same diameter as the outside of the tubing at the end. Have them drill through the center and make threads. On the end of the Fender Trim Rail (the end that attaches to the fork/fender) drill a 4 mm hole so you can run wires through the tubing. Buy some LED lights at www.fortech-online.com/ (they have all kinds of neat vintage looking lights) and luckily the bottom radius of the lights chrome housing is exactly the same as the outside radius of the Trim Rail tubing. Open up the headlight and connect your wires to the blue wires inside the housing (there are two blue wires connected to one blue wire - the only ones with that color in the housing). Connecting this way makes the lights stay on constantly when bike is running regardless of high or low beam. They can of cause also be connected to the blink wire of the turn signal but that way they will only come on when you put the turn signal on. I am sure there are many other options in connecting these but I am not very clever when it comes to electricity so I leave other suggestions to those who have knowledge. The pictures show before and after to show the difference of these two different setups. Enjoy !
  19. I am in need of a right hand saddlebag guard rail for a 04 RSV. I will buy a set if someone has one they will part with. Thanks
  20. Hey All....I was looking to do a little tinkering with the RSV yesterday and took things off to see about LOWERING the bag rails (Per the post here on the forum _Gen II)....When I loosened things up and lowered the rail and set the bag back on to check alignment, I noticed that the "new hole" spot "MIGHT" be to close to the curve in the chrome rail....(I looked at Boomers post again and pix)....QUESTION PLEASE: 1. When others have done this, does your rails ALWAYS look even with the bottom of the bags and level with the muffler pipes?. When I move the rail end up to make sure I have room for a lock nut, and replace bag for visual check, it is not level with either, but MUCH better than it is now! 2. I went to local hardware store and picked up a LOCK NUT for the bolt...Is this what everyone has been using? The kind with plastic inside...In stainless steel... The reason for these questions is that in Boomer's post and pix, his rail really line up WELL with the bag bottom! George In Virginia
  21. If you read the description, he mentions factory upgraded paint job, passing lamps, wrap around fender rail, custom exhaust, much more but the bike has none of those things....... hmmmmmmm http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Royal-Star-Venture-1999-Yamaha-Royal-Star-Venture-Star-Upgrades-20k-Mi-EC_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ50045QQihZ020QQitemZ300190103313QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
  22. It as a nice warn, sunny afternoon on Novervember 1st when I started down a long, winding hill running about 25 mph. Suddenly, I realize some big dude is standing over me asking me what day it is. I finally gather enough strength to tell him to go ask sombody that cares. I just wanted to sleep for a bit longer. It seems that as I was going down the hill using my rear brake to slow me, I hit a bump in the road that made me mash my rear brake pedal more than gently. This started a slide that I did not recover from. The bike "highsided" and threw me over the guard rail to land on a steep bank on my back. The bike went over on it's right side, slid backwards for about 20 ft the came to a rest next to the guard rail. It felt strange to wake up, look at the bike, and realize it was going the wrong direction and was on the wrong side to have been making the turn I was making. Fortunately. the damage to me was minor. I can thank My Lord and the riding gear and helmet for protecting me. Other than a mild concussion and a very sore and bruised back I am OK. The bike on the other hand did not fare well. I was surprised at the small amount of damage that turned into a $7,800 (US) estimate. Because this is over 75% of the listed value of the bike, the insurance company is going to total it. I was offered what I thought was a very fair settlement and I could keep the bike. So this is what I plan on doing. The majority of the parts I will clean up and continue to use since they are only minor scratches on them. But there are a couple of major parts that i would like to replace with new ones. I will list these in another thread to see you anyone has some stock parts that they would like to get rid of. I know everyone in here shares a bit of the pain when a Venture Rider goes down so I want to thank each of you in advance for your prayers and "Get Well Wishes". From the deepest reaches of my heart, THANK YOU to each and every one of you.
  23. This should be posted under Most Embarassing Moments. Anyone have a valve cover they can sell me and ship to Prince Edward Island Canada asap. I was installing the engine on my 84 after doing the 2nd gear repair and it rolled off my jack and cracked the front valve cover. I got the engine in OK after that noticed the crack when I started bolting the side rail on. I want to put the rest of the bike together next weekend and so I'm looking for help. There are some on ebay so I can try that if no one here has one. Thanks Ventureriders.
  24. OEM Bag Rails- Do the Lines Look Right to You? By Brad Norris “Boomer” OK, I couldn’t wait until I bought a set of OEM bag rails from a guy on bay. These were the Real McCoy and came in the OEM box. I made special time on a busy Saturday as soon as they arrived and mounted them up. Installation is quick and easy with the most time spent on removing the bags. After installation I admired them from all angles but wasn’t quite happy with the fit up. It appears to me that the bottom of the rails, when compared to the lines of the bag, just didn’t look right. The back end of the rails appears to be higher than in the front. Also, the back of the rails sat right under the turn signals- in fact, they touch each other. I quickly became suspicious of the Ebayer I bought these from but after looking at many pics on the forums I subscribe to, I saw the same trend in 95% of those I saw. Here is a side shot before with the camera leveling out on the rail. Muffler removed for clarity. http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic1.jpg The rear distance from the bottom of the bag to the bottom of the rail is much different from the front measurement. Mine was out ¾”. To make the “gaps” closer to each other, either the back of the bags must be raised or the rails lowered in the rear. Since it is impractical to raise the bags, I decided to lower the rails. To do this, remove the bag and loosen the front mounting bolt on the rail. Here’s a back shot of the bike with the OEM mount up. Note that the rail rubs the signal. http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic2.jpg I would suggest you do your own measurements to determine where to drill the new hole for the rear mount. Use a small “C” clamp on the rear mount when you think your measurement is close and then set the bag back on to see how it looks. It’s a bit tricky, but better to measure twice- and drill once. Important- Since the chrome rail you will drill into is “U” shaped, be mindful that you will have to put a metric nut behind it for the bolt. If you drill too close to the edge of the rail, you may not have enough room to thread the bolt in the new nut. The back of the rail has foam in it. Just make way for the new nut. I can’t remember the size of the nut but I bought it at Home Depot. When you have the final position, hold the back of the rail in place and use a spring loaded center punch to mark the new bolt location. http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic3.jpg A spring loaded center punch makes this task a bit easier. If you don’t have one, GET ONE. Here’s a pic of mine: http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic4.jpg Be sure to put some scrap metal behind the bracket before you push the drill through the fender and god forbid…the tire! Now, place the rear bolt that came with the rails through the support in the hole you just drilled and fasten with a nut (metric). Retighten the front bolt and install the bag. You should have something that resembles this: http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic5.jpg When you’re done, you will notice the rails-to-bag lines look much better. http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic6.jpg In the rear, the bag rails no longer rub the signals. Enjoy! http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic7.jpg http://www.venturerider.org/bagrails/pic8.jpg
