Hope everyone is doing well! With the bad weather around the corner I am getting ready to take the bike in the garage and fixing it over the winter. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the following product: 420 Series Single Shock http://www.cyclepages.com/ProductGroupDisp.aspx?ProductGroupID=4000199 They call it Progressive Suspension. I am by far an expert on this so forgive the ridiculous questions...but they state "420 Series high-performance shocks eliminate the need for a remote reservoir by utilizing an internal nitrogen bladder" Does this have to do with the Descicant container? What would be an advantage, if any, in using such a shock as a replacement? Is it worth the price or getting a stock used one on eBay? I like replacing with new parts when possible, even if a little more expensive. It states that it fits the XVZ12/13 Royale. Thanks in advance!

I purchased a 91 VR last fall and one day riding, I for some reason let go of the handle bar to do something. At around 40 mph I noticed a sight handle bar shake left & right. As my speed dropped to 35 the shake got much more excessive then by the time it go to 30 it was very violent to the point I almost lost control. Today on a short ride I thought I try the handle bar test thinking I might need to tighten the steering. Now I just installed progressive about 3 weeks ago. I let the handle bar go at about 45 mph and coasted down to about 10 mph with no shake. I was controlling the VR with just 1 finger on each grip and oh so very lightly just to keep the VR going straight.

Progressive Springs.....Is this a need for the second generation bikes or something that was upgraded and is only used on the first generation bikes? Information comes up some on the first generation bikes. I weigh around 275 - 285 lbs, 5' 11" tall. So kinda large fellow. I have noticed my bike being a little to soft or springy kinda jumpy on a hard pushing right or left lean curve. Maybe I just need to do the air shock stabilizing mod to the front forks. I need a pump just for this. Next on my need to get list. Fuzzy

I recently installed progressive springs and all seems to be fine with myself as a single rider. A bit stiff but expected. Yesterday my wife and I went for a ride and the ride definitely was smoother. I did hear what I thought was spring noise when taking off from a dead stop after a decent descending stop. I think the coils probably compressed about ½ inch to maybe an inch. My wife and & together riding gear and with some stuff maybe pushing around 350 lbs if that makes any difference. When I say spring noise it sounded like something was grinding lightly or rubbing against the springs as it was expanding. But I can’t imagine a ½ to 1 inch movement could make that much noise. The sound lasted about 1 full second. I did not hear anything during the breaking as the springs were compressing. I’ve heard that one is supposed to install the tight coils first which for that helps with spring noise, which I did. What does spring noise sound like. The OEM springs made no noise. Is what I’m hearing normal? Is there a breakin period?

These look like they might be progressive but I do not know for sure. There is very little travel for my forks and I am constantly bottomong out. If they are stock they are worn out. If they are progressive they may not have the correct spacers. when I took the cap off there was verry little pressure.

Does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Denver area who can install progressive springs in my 1987 Venture Royale?

For those who have installed Progressive Springs in their MKII, I have a few questions. I need to readjust my spacer length and so I'd like to come as close as I can to the perfect desired ride. I love what the progressive does to the handeling of my MKII, but mine is way too stiff. I would like to use a spacer size that would be the most appropiate for my 170 lbs(birthday suit). I rarely ride double and my storage trunks are pretty much empty. I would allow 10 to 15 lbs of stuff all together in my storage trunks. No Gas Tank Bag. I'm usually a one day rider so I travel pretty light. What length spacer do you use? What wt fork oil What length of non oil space did you leave after compressing your forks. Whats your weight? Hows soft and smooth is your ride? Would you like to use a different length spacer, or oil wt and why?

Got it all back together. As I took the VR off the center stand the front forks did not seem to collapse a bit. Sat on the VR and tried to rock the VR with the front break held. Forks still did not collapse. Took it for a slow spin on my private street with a speed bump. Did some quick stops. Still did not seem to collapse. The ride also seemed a but bumpy. I'm 5 ft 8 inch about 173lb. Is this how Progressive Springs are supposed to act at really slow speeds. I will be taking it out for a lenghy spin today. Would appreciate some input just incase I should not take it for a spin yet.

I have a 1988 Venture and would like to replace the front fork springs and the rear shock with the progressive product (unless someone has another alternative to the darned expensive rear shock, mine won't hold air). I don't want to beat a dead horse here, but I've searched all over the site and need some help, so if you have a link to this question (which I'm sure has been answered already) please send me the link! I need to know what the procedure is to replace them. Thank you in advance! Shane

I know I have asked this question before but, I've had to replace the fork seals...again and I forgot how much fork oil you put in each tube with progressive springs. I know George S knows if he sees this post because he has told me before.

I took my bike to the local shop to get some work gone and got the bike back yesterday. What a grocery list of work to be done.. I might have been able to get some if not most of it done myself but didn't have the confidence of tackling it alone.. (A) Early this summer when I had my front tire replaced by an out of town company, they managed to munge up the axle threads in the fork. When my local shop saw this they expressed concerns that it should beefed up with a heli-coil kit. The kits are expensive around here, I never saw one but would imagine gold plating and diamond studs for the price they were asking. A subsequent road trip into the USA showed me where to get them for $50 or so.. So new wheel bearings, covers, axle etc and heli-coil insert got that all done proper and more secure / safer.. (B) Neck bearings.. When visiting Goose in June, he gave the neck bearings a much needed 'tightening', and indicated that there was still some front to back play in the bearings.. They should be OK for a while but that they really do need to be repacked / replaced.. If someone is going through all that trouble to gain access to the bearings to repack them, might as well spend the additional $20 on new bearings eh? So now, wow, what a HUGE difference that makes.. the front end is tighter feeling, more confidence in turns, tracks much better. Doesn't feel sloppy anymore. Though the bike was safe to ride before the change, it wasn't as sure footed as my buddy's bike.. but now? wow. © Front forks servicing and progressive Spring installation. New seals and syn oil put in the front forks.. New progressive springs do wonders for a bike.. I have them in my VStar and loved them, and decided to put them in the Venture and oh my gosh.. what a gorgeous feel to this bike NOW.. Coupled with the new neck bearings, the bike tracks well in turns and straight line but eats up the sharp bumps and cracked and obstacles.. And when you apply your front brakes, the bike doesn't dive to the pavement anymore. At an intersection you could pump the front brakes and watch your headlight beam fly up and down.. not anymore.. yes, it's a stiffer ride but a more confident feeling ride.. WOW. I like it a lot. Got a week of rain unfortunately so i can't take it out to test it properly until this weekend. But the ride home yesterday really impressed me a lot.. wow. zero air pressure in the shocks is recommended unless you notice you need air in them.. In the oem set up I used to pump them up to 5 or 7 psi.. and they were still floppy.. now, wow,, nice!! Now, I'm just waiting for the new rear shock to come in.. They had a production problem this fall that caused a delay in shipping.. but I'm patient.. Once the Werks shock comes in I'll be installing it and testing the bike out, putting her through the paces.. A good wad of coins spent but worth every penny thus far.. Progressive springs, I am confident they will be all that they lived up to be in my VStar..

Suggested Retail: $92.95 The Original Progressive Rate Fork Springs soak up the small road bumps, yet are firm enough to absorb the molar-rattling ones. Spring rates have been chosen to reduce front end "dive" during braking, yet still provide excellent ride comfort. Better yet, we warranty our fork springs for life! Progressive Rate Fork Springs have several advantages over straight rate springs. A straight rate spring only offers linear resistance to compression and is a compromise. For example, if you have a 20lb straight rate spring, it will take 20lbs of force to compress the spring one inch. It will take 20 more lbs of force to compress it the next inch, and so on, until the end of the travel. A Progressive Rate Spring has the advantage of a rising rate resistance to compression.

OK,anyone that has ridden a Gold Wing especially over a rougher road knows the front fork set up could use some attention..dont get me wrong it is super on the highway but you still feel harsher bumps thru the handlebars. That being stated I just got home from a ride with another Wing that has the "All Balls" and Progressive Rate springs installed on it...plus a Kumho Run Flat Car Tire. My observations:Night and day difference having the progressive rate springs in the front end,the all ball head bearings are very stable feeling, seems more responsive also. The progressive Rate springs took 95 % of harshness out..Im saying 95% because after appx 50 miles or whatever riding it I didnt feel the harshness but Im sure as with any bike a hard enough hole in the road will make it jolt you. The Car Tire....I will not be going with it..I felt very unsure on it as it seemed to want to roll as I would corner, that being said the guy that owns it can easily scrape the boards and corner as good if not better than I. On April 5th I will be going to Houston to have the all balls and progressive springs plus shock bled and reloaded plus Chrome Wheels installed. For $275.00 I am having the All Balls and Springs put in,I am supplying the springs. I think this will be the best money I have spent tweaking a bike compared to the ride I took today. I hope this write up helps anyone with questions on the front suspension. IM me if you need the guys number or if OK with Freebird I will post it here..Tom

I got my progressive springs yesterday, I am slightly confused when it comes to the fork oil level. First thing is to block the bike up so the front wheel is off the ground, then I need to fully compress the forks and measure to the top of the fork oil. I am sure there is an easy way of doing this but I am easily confused and this has got me. I do not have the bike apart yet, I just need to know what I am doing before I take it apart. Thanks everyone.

Ok, been reading up on the install on the springs and there is some good stuff about installing progressive springs, the problem i have and cant find the answer to is how long and what size is the pvc spacer is, the springs i got came out of of a set of forks and they had no spacers in them, do you realy need the spacers ? it said to cut the spacer in half that came with springs, sence i did not buy these new and there was no spacer in there to begin with i am lost, does the space go on the top or the bottem, help if you will.

Has anyone ever tackled this job? Since the shock has less than 5K miles on it, I don't really want to replace the entire thing. But, considering the progressive spring mod if it's not horridly difficult.

I hope y'all are not gonna tell me I screwed up!!! Anyway my home owner's insurance came up for renewal and I went shopping. My Allstate agent said he could not write Allstate for our double wide, but quoted me American Modern Insurance Group. Sure enough they beat Foremost (which I've had for years). He told me they also wrote M/C insurance. He did quote me Allstate on the scoots, but it was ridiculously high. Long story short, yearly premium for full coverage for BOTH scoots was $620.00. That's not each that's both! Renewal with each was $436.00 with Geico on the RSTC and $425.00 with Progressive on the RSV. Hope they AMIG is a good company!!!

To Progressive Insurance Customer Service Department. As a few of you may know, after 10 years on the RSV and waiting for Yama to make a move, I decided to take Snarley Bill up on his offer to sell his 2008 Goldwing. Before purchasing the Wing, I got an online quote from Progressive, my current carrier on the RSV which I thought was very reasonable. Yesterday, I went to see my insurance agent and gave him the info on the Wing. His price for the same coverage from Progressive was a little over $100 more than the online quote. I asked why and he couldn’t say (or wouldn’t) but suggested I call the Progressive Customer Service. So I did. I told Customer Service that I had purchased another bike and wanted to add it to my existing policy, thinking to take advantage of their multi-vehicle discount. After giving them the info, they gave me a price that was still about $30 more than the online quote. I asked why the difference, the rep asked for the quote number and put me on hold. In just a few minutes he was back and explained that my existing policy had renewed in February and they had a PRICE DECREASE in March. The online quote was based on the lower rates. Adding the Wing to my existing policy would put it at the old HIGHER rate. The rep suggested that we write a new policy for the Wing for the lower rate, then after the policy is established call them back and they would combine both bikes on the new policy. By doing this I am supposed to receive a refund from the old policy for the difference in rates (about $15), plus a refund for multi-vehicle policy. He also went through my policy and found another discount I was due and not receiving. Just a few bucks but every little bit helps. Progressive went the extra mile to save me every penny they could, they were fast, friendly, and in no hurry to get me off the phone and move on. I’ve not had to make a claim with them yet, but if their claim service is anything like their Customer Service, then they have a loyal customer for a long time.
