We've been out in East Tennessee for a week. We went to Gatlinburg for our 25th anniversary, and have toured the area quite a bit. We even got to ride the Dragon...in the truck...lol. We came up to Rogersville, where I toured the local TVA plant, as I've been thinking about relocating, and transferring to this plant. Well, it turns out they are short handed, and want me to come NOW...lol. We are still thinking it over, and need to sell our house first, if we do. If we move, I know we will miss our VR friends from around home, but I see there are quite a few here in Kingsport, Johnson City and Morristown. I would have liked to have time to meet up with everyone while we are here, but there's just not enough hours in the day. Not decided yet, but we are leaning toward relocating out here. Heading back home in a few hours.

As you may, or may not, know Harley has suggested they may close their final assembly plant in York, PA. Closing that plant will devastate the local economy and add to our 8.5 percent unemployment. If you're in the neighborhood this weekend, there is a rally to support the plant. I don't know if it would have any influence on the folks in Milwaukee, but it could, at minimum be a fun day. This will devastate our local economy: Harley-Davidson Inc. could shrink or shut down its York County plant as the company tries to slash costs. "We have determined that we need to make some major changes in our York operations to position them competitively," spokesman Bob Klein said today. The 230-acre Springettsbury Township plant is widely viewed as an anchor of the local economy. Milwaukee-based Harley has more than 2,000 employees here, though layoffs are eroding the numbers. The problems at the plant include excess capacity and inefficiencies, Klein said. Harley plans to compare the cost of moving the operation with the cost of revamping it, he said. He declined to discuss long-term demand projections underlying Harley's review. Preliminary recommendations are expected by the fall. Harley in 2003 expanded the plant with a roughly $145 million factory for its Softail line of bikes. One scenario for keeping the plant open is to move production of Touring model bikes out of a separate building that dates back to the World War II era and into the new building, Klein said. A three-year contract the company hammered out with its union amid a 2007 strike will expire in February. Asked whether contract concessions might save the plant, union leader Dave Bunnell said: "That's always a possibility. We are just getting ready to elect our negotiating committee, and 'til we do that we won't be in talks at all." Bunnell is president of Local 175 of the International Association of Machinists (IAM) and Aerospace Workers. Klein only said labor costs would be a factor in the company's calculations. The IAM and another Harley union, the United Steelworkers, are involved in the company's review of a potential move, Klein said. Harley is assuming a new facility would be unionized, he said. Local union leaders also are working with management on the cost study. No similar reviews are occurring at other Harley plants, Klein said. Harley had about 2,500 hourly workers and 320 salaried workers in York County as of May 1, Klein said. Bunnell said his union counted about 2,140 members as of the latest layoff. And looking ahead, it seems likely the York County plant is at least going to shrink, Bunnell said. "Yeah, that's kind of the feedback we're getting," he said. Harley-Davidson shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol HOG.

OK I haven't even successfully ran one M&E yet but we're off to a good start. I want to start on the next one before the snow falls (I hate the sound of that!)... HD final assembly plant is here in York. I thought it would be fun if we had an M&E that includes the HD factory tour. Imagine a bunch of Yamahas lined up at the HD plant! I suppose someone could turn that around on us, but it could be fun. This would have to be October or later as my August and September are getting booked! Who's in??

For those that didn't know or don't care Honda Motorcycle USA plant in Marysville, Ohio is closing and moving back to Japan. Brand new plant with some new bikes including another automatic, don't know what size. This past year they made 44,000 VTX and Goldwings. My main reason for the thread is to tell you this will be your last chance to attend the Honda Homecomming July 24-26. The event is unique in that you can tour the bike plant in operation on the 25th or self guided tour on 26th non operational (Saturday) You can see schedule by looking up Honda Homecomming. If you live in or near Ohio it would be a good trip. It's about 35 mi northwest of Columbus
