My new to me 2005 Venture had been sitting for a few months before I bought it and no suprise two of the pilots were blocked, cold headers after start up, I used some Seafoam at 50% mix but it was a long shot and did not clear the pilots. After reading Freebirds guide to carb removal and buying some 17.5 pilot jets I set to work, it was not as bad as I thought and took me about an hour to pull the carbs fit the 17.5 pilots and put it all back together. I set the pms to 2.5 turns out. She started right up with a little choke and did not need more than a minute to warm on choke, then I went for a test ride, ooooh nice and smooth at low revs, next task will be to balance the carbs but that can wait until next weekend.

What is the advantage to changing to the 17.5 pilots?

I've always had a lot of admiration for airline pilots and their abilities. Yes, I know, you occasionally hear some horror story about a wacko doing something insane or stupid, but those events are rare. Here is a link to a story about the average airline pilot's training and a video shot at a German airport during a day with severe cross winds. Absolutely amazing!! http://travel.sympatico.ca/TravelNews/Articles/how_safe_is_a_plane Andy

so i ordered the larger pilot jets but just needed to see if I could find the screws and do the idle drop test to see if any of the pilots would not make a difference in rpm when turning them in. They all worked and it seemed that they were turned just about 2 1/2 turns from seated. i turned them out 1 full turn and re synched the carbs. they were off a bit. Felt better but tommorow morning will be the real test when starting from cold. how many turns out worked for you, did you eventually go with the larger pilots. with the larger pilots what setting should I used. how many turns out?

The object of the game is to move the red block around without getting hit by the blue blocks or touching the black walls. If you can go longer than 18 seconds you are phenomenal. It's been said that the US Air Force uses this for fighter pilots. They are expected to go for at least 2 minutes. Give it a try, but be careful...it is addictive Reflex Test

I dunno, maybe it's age (45), or the cruising nature of the venture but I find year by year I am more worried about functional equipment and less worried about how cool I look. Case in point, I just bought a Tourmaster 2 Pivot jacket, it's not leather. See it here: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A6U9R2/ref=oss_product]Amazon.com: Tour Master Pivot Series 2 Jacket - Small/Yellow: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21sOC3lOcXL.@@AMEPARAM@@21sOC3lOcXL[/ame] I got the yellow one. I've been wearing my reflective vest in the early predawn trips to work, over my leather jacket. But I want to be more visible all of the time. I mostly wear a full face helmet, switching to 3/4 white on warmer days. Always wear a helmet. I just bought my first two pairs of Kevlar lined jeans and khakis (sliders and I love em). But, I'm still an avid snowboarder so, I hope I'm growing up, not old! Maybe it's the pilot in me (hang-gliders mainly) that knows, "there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots...

ok I got the muffinman's new address. They are suppose to be flying out on tuesday. Might be a few more days then that, but we thought it would be longer till they went at the rate they were going. He'll be at Tarin Kot still in Kandahar Province. So if you'd like his new address just ask and I can send it to you. Seems some big wig showed up last week and put in the order for pilots and had the pallets brought in for their stuff. Actually would be better for them to be there since the planes are there and have to fly down to them now. He probably won't have internet where he's going not sure when they'll have that. I'm just hoping he gets his last package I sent to him. It's a coat, that sand out there gets in everything so they need a canvas type material so they can blow the sand out of them. Margaret

I'm having a problem with the 86 I just picked up that was in storage for a pretty long time. I have it idling just fine but whenever I increase the rpms to lets say 2000 it just pops and sputters. But if I give it full throttle, it seems to rev to higher r's without missing a beat. There are three circuits: 1) low speed circuit (idle) controlled by the idle mixture screws 2) mid range circuit - controlled by the pilots jets 3) high speed circuit - controlled by the main jets Would any agree or disagree that I most likely am dealing with clogged or partially clogged pilots? Thanks

For those that have made adjustments to their pilot circuits... what technique do you use? With 4 carbs can you hear an idle change when tuning each carb? I plugged my AIS and synched my carbs last weekend. I also popped the caps and turned the pilots out 1/4 turn each. Since then the bike is running great but I'm now getting a bit of popping through the exhaust on decel. That signifies a lean condition but I turned the pilots out not in.

I read a tech article on another forum about how the pilots are adjusted lean from the factory. (That sounds normal) It recommended turning all four out 1/4 turn. For those that have adjusted their pilots... does that sound about right? FYI, my Venture is an '07.
