Going to have to do a clutch job here soon on the 2nd Gen . Trying to decide on the Barnett conversion with OEM fiber disk , or PCW HD Clutch Spring kit with extra friction disk ? Have nearly 30K on the '06 , 8K pulling trailer . I'm starting to fill a little slippage in the clutch when I do a hard acceleration . I can baby it and it's OK for a mild trip . But why take a chance on making the it worse . I heard PCW is cheaper in price to do , but I want better quality (not knowing which is better), so cost is not an issue . I have not done a clutch job in over 30 years , so kinda out of the loop , you might say ! TIA BEER30

Hello, First time posting, but wanted to give my 2 cents on the clutch disk/spring upgrade. BIG BIG BIG thanks to Freebird for the write up with pictures. Also big thanks to skydoc for being so helpful with the 2 orders and convincing me to purchase the friction disks as well. Basically if you open the clutch to replace the spring just go ahead and do the disks since its a pain in the ass to deal with. Several big questing I had before I did this where answered by members, but some of the write up's did raise more questions. Also I am 6 foot tall 330lbs if anyone needs measurements. 1. Will this change my clutch travel? If it did change it I didn't notice. The pull is a bit stiffer, but travel wise nothing that I could complain about. 2. Should I really swap out that last half disk? You should 100% change out that half disk along with new friction plates. Then close that case for another 60k miles. ONE AND DONE. 3. What about that Barnett conversion? Costs to much for what it is and after my install I think the travel/clamping/friction zone is perfect for the bike/weight. 4. Any problems with install? Get a torque wrench before you start. Have small small small picks available to pull that last half disk out it is a pain in the ass. The wire is much smaller then you think and you miss it at first. 5mm Allen key is needed otherwise pull the exhaust. I actually put a 5mmg allen bit into the bolt then turned it with a box end wrench all ghetto mechanic like. 5. How much oil did you lose? Well overall I measured about 50ml of oil lost. You should definitely put a pan underneath. It not a large amount but enough to cover everything with a fine layer of oil that makes you smell like burnt **** all day long. 6. What are these dots to line up people keep talking about? The clutch basket has 1 mark on it. The plate has 1 mark on it. Marked by the stars in the pictures. The bolt pattern is such that they will line up. Just match the stars. That is the only thing I lined up and have rode for 1100 miles at this point with no error or issue. I did steal the pictures from freebird.

Hi guys, its been determined that I had most likely 'burnt out' my clutch this past weekend on the advanced rider's course, hence why my clutch travel on the lever is sooo minute, the friction plates have thinned out so much, that's all she wrote.. So I have to replace the friction plates and to hedge against the possibilities of further troubles, I'll be changing the steel plates as well.. and do an oil change.. I probably have 20,000 miles on the PCW kit since I installed it.. and I ride my bike like I stole it.. (in some ways I did I don't know if there any other aftermarket friction plates available for our bike or not, but I also can't find my info as to how many of each plates the clutch takes as I did the PCW mod of removing the half disc etc.. ?? Aftermarket or OEM plates.. Any help or advice would be appreciated..

Can someone answer and help me with the PCW Clutch Kit Install. I started the job and where there is that wire that holds the metal plate and fiber disc a smaller OD type washer. In the very back it looks like just a smooth machined surface but also maybe a larger OD type washer. The instruction blew over into some old oil and can't read them. Help me from where I'm at please. Thanks

Looking for a little help. I am going to upgrde the clutch on my 02 RSV with an used Barnett spring I got at a good price( $62 for the whole clutch basket assy with the Barnett kit) I was going to do the PCW Racing kit as it was cheaper untill I found this deal. Ive read a lot here about the PCW kit and understand that they are replacing the rear half disc for a full friction disc. So my question is are the guys that are using the Barnett kit doing the same thing? I dont recall ever seeing anything about that with the Barnett although I cant see where it would hurt, but matbe it isnt nessesary. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kevin

I just pulled the flywheel out to send to Dano to do the starter clutch upgrade. As long as I'm in there, is there anything else I should be checking out or doing? I will also be pulling out the clutch to put in the HD spring from PCW Racing, and plates if needed. Again, anything else that I should be checking out while in there?

Just ordered the upgrade kit from PCW and it seems someone else in the Tomball, Tx area just ordered it too( occording to John at PCW). I would like to assist, if someone wants to give me a holler when they start their upgrade. I would like to see one done before I tackle doing mine. I should be doing mine in about 2 weeks and obviouly was hoping to find someone locally that has done the change and can supervise the change with me since I have never done it. I just want someone over my shoulder on some of the work. thanks

Hey guys, I need to get my clutch redone, sorted out as it's slipping at highway speeds.. not so bad when taking off from a stop but up on the highway, dropping the hammer really screams up the revs and eventually I'll feel some accelleration. Folks have been leading on to the PCW Racing clutch kit, which is not as expensive as thd Barnett clutch kit. Comparing apples to oranges, is one better than the other or are we looking as one being as good as the other, only price being the difference? I couldn't reach the PCW people today.. ergh

I just got off the phone with PCW and ordered a clutch kit for my 99 Venture. Well not the whole clutch kit, but the new improved spring, gasket, and full clutch disk. The guy I talked to was great. He asked me some questions about my bike to make sure I was ordering the right stuff for my situation. He didn't try to over sell me on anything. I mentioned this site and he said he has dealt with many of us here and everyone he has dealt with has had good success with these kits, even the trailer pullers. So does anyone have any feedback on how they liked the PCW kit, or how it is working. Any suggestions or things I should look for while doing the repair? Also is it something I should save and do at M.D. at Freebirds. I should be getting the parts on Monday or Tuesday, HOWS THAT FOR SERVICE!!! Big Mike....Who cant wait for M. D. YEEEHAWWW

Well, after getting everyone's urging I called PCW and ordered the parts to upgrade my 03 RSV Clutch. $168 plus change. All I can say is WOW PCW was great to work with on the ordering. Really make you feel like you are their most important customer. Something that seems to be really lacking from most companies now. They are shipping today and I might have them by Friday. If so, I am going to try to do it on Saturday or Sunday. If not it will be next week. I am very apprehensive about doing the upgrade, even with Tartan Terror's great article. I live under the cloud of Murphy's Law. I have learned to live with it . I wonder how big a Steak and how many beers it would take to get Chaos to come over and help me out?? PCW said I could call them along the way too, so maybe it will work out OK. We are going on our Annual Weekend get-away with another couple to Southern MO around Steelville on 7/6, so I want it done before then. Everyone keep their fingers crossed and stay close to your cell phones TT, Chaos and Freebird!! Jay
