After much searching I have been unable to locate anything on what might be causing my 2005 midnight to run hot today. Went for a ride with two friends (on Harleys) today and got into stop and go traffic on a side trip to Ocala. The temp gage (Sunpro small triple set) started going up and up and up till it was pointed at the six o'clock position. Pulled off the road and let it cool down before continuing again. Again temp gage went waaaaaay up. Radiator is full with recommended coolant. Temp goes up at lower rpms at highway speeds though not that far. With higher revs in lower gear the temp is now staying around 210. I'm thinking the water pump is not working well. Any other suggestions from the great and knowledgable venture riders would be greatly appreciated. Doug

With the temp gauge on all our first gens riding high in the heat of summer I have to ask if anyone has ever installed an external oil cooler, and if so how did they do it? My bike isn't overheating just running warm like all of them do. Just wondering if this is a possible mod. to help keep things a little cooler. Thanks, Ray.

I need information as to how our triked '89 Venture Royale is going to react at mountain pass elevations exceeding 9000 ft. I know I will have some loss of power. Am I going to have to worry about overheating or burning a piston if I pay attention and take it easy?

I know I am putting the cart before the horse but I want to be confident when I go to my dealer with the problem. Usually I do my own repairs but since the RSTD is still under warranty I may take it to them. For a few days now I have been smelling antifreeze from the bike after or during a ride. Not strong but enough to know there is a leak. Today after a 180 mile ride my son was riding the RSTD and shortly before getting home he said the Red Overheating Light came on. We could hear the coolant boiling in the reservoir so it was definitely hot. Initially I was thinking stuck thermostat...which I still think is the cause of the overheating but.... because I could smell the coolant but unable to find a leak I can't help but wonder if possible the water pump is heading south as well. So I am wondering if : 1. I should just go ahead and replace the thermostat my self or let the dealer do all the work. It doesn't look like that much to get to it. 2. Part of the repair would be to drain the coolant. I assume that the replacement coolant would be at the dealers expense under warranty as it would not need to be drained if the thermostat/water pump was not going bad. 3. Now here is a biggie: I would like to have my valves checked. I think the left front cylinder is off a bit as there is a very slight noise and the left side smokes a little bit. Compression on that cylinder is lower than the rest at about 190 lbs, vs about 210 lbs the other 3 cylinders. If they had to tear into the engine anyway how much more should I expect to be charged for them to look at the valves? I know ...lots of questions. Its hard when your brain looks like a cobweb. Thanks, Tom

Have had a 83 VR for two years now and have been working on an overheating problem. The 83 VR has an 86 (1300) motor because the PO had a second gear problem and replaced the whole engine. Anyway, the bike has been running hot since I bought it (right up at the red/green line). When the weather is in the high 80's low 90's it boils over when stopped at a light or in traffic, etc.. (See my posts from earlier this year) I have changed everything trying to correct the problem. I was going to sell the bike for parts and have bought a 89 VR from a member on this forum and am in the process of fixing it up and getting it ready to ride next season. I took the 89VR to Earl to have some mechanical work done on it and spoke to him about the overheating on the 83 VR. He said that he thought the TCI was the original one from the 83 and that the timing curve was different from the 86 engine that was currently in the bike. He thinks that that is what is creating the overheating problem. I stumbled across the article about the foreign made TCI and it said in the thread that the 83 had a different timing mode than the later engines. So, I think my overheating problems may be because I have a 1200 TCI in the bike and not a 1300 TCI. I don't think the original PO changed the TCI but cannot confirm that with the previous PO. I do not want to teardown the bike to get the TCI out, instead I just want to try a 1300 TCI and put it on top of the airbox and see if that corrects the problem. I will be selling this bike in the spring if it solves the problem , otherwise I will part it out as I don't want to sell this bike with this problem. I now own a 89 VR, which is being worked on by Earl (Skydoc) and don't need two bikes. Does anyone have a TCI for an 86 1300 engine they would like to sell? Thanks Jim

Hey, The other day, as I was getting my riding gear on in the parking lot outside the Uxbridge Mac's milk store, I was approached by a guy who said his name was Doug and that he had an '84 Venture that was having overheating issues at highway speeds. He mentioned getting advice from an Intenet forum but I don't know if it was this one or the other one. I haven't read of such a recent post here but Doug, if you are reading this post, send me a PM and lets get together for a ride and or to put our heads together on your overheating problem. Cheers, Brian H.

I have a 83 VR with an 86 motor (previous owner changed motor, instead of fixing 2nd gear) and have bought a heavy duty stator and regulator/rectifier from Buckeye Perf. and installed the stator OK and works good, but then noticed that the instructions for the R/R said to cut off the brown wire in the wiring harness and discard it. The R/R is a knockoff and not a Yama part. I am wondering what the brown wire is used for and if I can cut it off without any bad effects. Can I safely cut and discard this brown wire? Electrical wiring diagrams are just gibberish to me, so they are no help. I know enough to get in trouble and electrocute myself. The Service Manager at the local bike shop said it was OK to cut it off, but he didn't sound like he knew what he was talking about. He didn't even ask what year or model bike I had. I just told him I had an older VR. The bike has been sitting in the back of my garage, since last fall, because of overheating problems, and not charging. Put the new stator in, in the fall and then lost interest because of the overheating problem. I have a GW, so there was no hurry to fix it. If I can get the R/R unit in and working, I might work on the overheating problem (long story) and if I can't, then I will part out the bike over the summer. I have owned this bike for three years, but have only ridden it sporadically because of the overheating problem and now the electrical problem. Thanks for any help. Jim

Guday all, Can someone please shed some light on this issue? I put K&N filters, iridium plugs and Barons slash cut pipes on my 2004 RSV. I then had it re-jetted and Dyno'd. Since this work has been done, every now and again (Genrally after about twenty to thirty km's) the red "overheating" lamp comes on. It stays on and then goes out after about fourty seconds. I can't seem to pinpoint any pattern to this apart from the fact that I'm normally going up and down the gearbox. All the "experts" I've talked to say that it's everything from a faulty thermostat to lack of or to much back pressure in the pipes. Can anyone help?
