  1. Hey all, I'm new to the yamaha venture and so far the wife and I love the bike, the question I have is after doing the 600 mi. oil change using 15w-40w rotella the engine has some valve ticking on cold start up then goes away in about a minute. Is this a normal thing on this engine, or do I just have a valve set a little loose, oh yeah the bike is an 09. Thanks for the help.
  2. Hey Folks, I'm on a 6000 mile hike through the US... Currently in Phoenix (week of May 19th), Next week Houston (Week of 26th) with 5 days over the weekend to enjoy (I hope). Im 2600 miles into this trip with i have a 2009 Royal Star Venture that I bought with LAC pipes... the noise is killing me.... I'm looking for New OEM (take-off), Used OEM to swap out before i keep going. Will consider trade, cash, beer or whatever else won't get me arrested. Thanks G
  3. I just bought a 1996 Royal star classic, only issue is a popping noise only on the Right Aft cyl or #3 Happens shortly after engine starts to warm up 2min popps at all ranges of rpm but it does NOT back fire (loud bang) Where should I start looking first - vaccum - carb sync ? Thanks Pete ptynning@msn.com
  4. Every Fan Down in Fan-ville Liked Hockey a lot … But the Greed, Who lived just south of Fan-ville, Did NOT! The Greed hated Hockey! The whole Hockey season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be his game was baseball or basketball. It could be, perhaps, that he was jealous of football. But I think that the most likely reason of all May have been that he thought his wallet was too small. But, Whatever the reason, The sport or no shame, He sat there in September, hating just the same, Clutching his brandy with an evil, Greedy sneer As the Fans toasted the new season with cold beer. For he knew every Fan up in Fan-ville above Cared not for the business, only puck love. "And there will be training camp!" he yelled with a racket. "All will have hope! Even the Jackets!" Then he growled, while his butler got his Bentley running, "I MUST find some way to stop Hockey from coming!" For, As soon as the puck dropped, he knew … All the Fans with great glee Would turn on TVs. They'd rush to the rinks! And he'd hear that "Gangnam Style" song everyone sings! Oh, the Noise! Noise! Noise! Noise! That's one thing he hated! The NOISE! NOISE! NOISE! NOISE! http://l2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/R3STrNWiKRAcCxC2ezA3sA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMxMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/388/2012/12/21/Grinch-2-Canucks-jersey-jpg_212423.jpgAnd THEN They'd do something He liked least of all! Every Fan up in Fan-ville, of the Canucks to the 'Hawks, Would gather in great flocks, the floor to the ceiling. They’d stand side-by-side. And the Fans would start cheering! They'd cheer! And they'd cheer! AND they'd CHEER! CHEER! CHEER! CHEER! And the more the Greed thought of this Fan-cheering-thing, The more the Greed thought, "I'd rather hear 'Cha-ching!' "These fools don't follow important things like the Dow. "They follow the standings and guys like that Gordie … "Uhh … Howe?" Then he got an idea! A new idea! THE GREED GOT A NEW, OLD IDEA! "I know just what to do!" The Greed said like a snoot. "I'll have a lockout! And I'll file lawsuits!" And he laughed and he snorted, "Won't that be funny? "Somehow, I figure, I'll make even more money!" * * * * * http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/WJMWZCHrvwaxSM620IqBsQ--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMxMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/388/2012/12/21/Grinch-3-face-jpg_212428.jpgTHEN He canceled training camps And the first weeks of the sked And the Winter Classic and more. Each time, a kick in the head. The owners and players, he'd make them fight … Fight so long, few would care who was right. "What's this about?" The Fans once wanted to know. Is it revenue sharing or HRR? Or contract rights? Or escrow? "What's this about?" The Fans didn't bother anymore. Disclaimer of interest? Decertification? Everyone is bored. We need a vacation. After months of pointing fingers and trading proposals, The sides came to New York, the biggest star at their disposal. The Greed seemed in trouble, for who could it be? Not Cindy-Lou Who – but Sidney Crosby! But even with the help of his owners and agent, Crosby could not keep it from blowing a gasket. He went back to Pittsburgh asked the big question: "Why? "Why aren't they even talking now? Why?" But, you know, that old Greed was so smart and so slick He thought up a lie, and he thought it up quick! "Why, we aren't close at all!" the evil Greed lied. "When you hear that we're close, that's only one side. "So there's nothing to talk about. We'll go to the brink. "Maybe we'll cancel the season, or someone will blink." And as if the Fans needed more reason to hate, That dastardly old Greed would not give a drop-dead date. Forget the openers. The Fans wanted closure. It was all they could do to keep their composure. And the one speck of hope That was left in the league Was a glimmer even too dim for Milbury. * * * * * http://l2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/.CBQv3j69Qvg.uj4MbRggw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMxMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/388/2012/12/21/Grinch-4-Canes-sign-jpg_212417.jpgIt was now halfway into the season … Eighty-two games, impossible, Fifty-six, too, When the Greed looked at the schedule. "Down to 48? Woo-hoo!" So much crossed out! No banner in L.A.! No new arrivals to tout! No Nash, no Suter, no Parise! "Pooh-pooh to the Fans!" the Greed greedily hummed. "How do they feel that Hockey has not come? "It's finally sinking in! I know just what they'll do! "Their mouths will hang open for a minute or two "Then the Fans down in Fan-ville will all cry BOO-HOO!" "That's a noise," grinned the Greed, "That I simply MUST hear!" So he paused. And the Greed put his hand to his ear. And he did hear a sound rising over the snow. It started in low. Then it started to grow … But the sound wasn't sad! Why, this sound sounded merry! It couldn't be so! But it WAS merry! VERY! He stared up at Fan-ville! The Greed popped his eyes! Then he shook! http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/DtrMorBuX6kTfo1nSFlCVw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMxMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/388/2012/12/21/Grinch-6-end-jpg_212435.jpgWhat he saw was a shocking surprise! The Fans up in Fan-ville, of the Canucks to the 'Hawks, Were cheering! Right out of their socks! Oh, there was emotion over the lockout, no doubt. But you know what? The NHL isn't all it's about! Some Fans cheered for junior and college, the other levels of Hockey, all. Other Fans just cheered for – gulp! – baseball and basketball and football. Then the Greed thought of something he should have before. "Maybe," he thought, "they cheer first and then spend. "Maybe, perhaps, they'll just spend elsewhere instead!" And what happened then … ? Well … in Fan-ville they say That the Greed's feeble brain Finally got it that day! And as soon as he realized how to really grow his wallet, He dropped the lawsuits, and he lifted the lockout. And he brought back Hockey! And he sold lots of beers! And he … … HE HIMSELF … ! The Greed led the cheers!
  5. Finally... I'm loving it. IMHO, this is NOT a "make-work" project; rather it is a "make-peace" project. A couple of things in the article I disagree with though... - loud pipes do NOT save lives, - a noise by-law should not only target motorcycles, it should target all vehicles that are unnecessarily loud, - and if a vehiclespasses a country's muffler code at the date of manufacture it should be allowed on the streets. Kudos to my City Councilors who had the courage to listen to the majority of the voters and pass this law by a good majority. Hopefully this will start a future of peaceful night's sleep for me and hundreds of thousands of residents who are so rudely kept awake by the selfish asinine actions of a few people. http://www.guelphmercury.com/news/local/article/855774--guelph-motorcycle-noise-bylaw-make-work-project-councillor-alleges (in case the link doesn't work, full text below)... Scott Tracey, Mercury staff Mon Dec 17 2012 Guelph motorcycle noise bylaw ‘make-work project,’ councillor alleges GUELPH — Motorcyclists hoping for an early Christmas present at city council Monday night might be feeling a bit Scrooged. Despite the concerns of two of their colleagues that noise restrictions on motorcyclists are unfair and “a make-work project,” the majority of city councillors approved a new testing protocol aimed at cracking down on loud bikes. Coun. Gloria Kovach noted the staff recommendation did not include options for targeting other loud vehicles “which arguably frequent our roadways more.” Kovach said she is also concerned about how the bylaw is to be enforced, noting only Guelph Police officers have the authority to pull over a suspected noise bylaw violator. But Kovach questioned whether listening to motorcycles’ exhaust notes is an effective use of the police service, which recently introduced an online reporting system for minor crime in an effort to be more efficient. The councillor suggested the bylaw will be a “bureaucratic nightmare” which unfairly targets motorcycles over other loud vehicles. Coun. Cam Guthrie said the legislation “pits neighbour against neighbour” by providing residents with another tool to use against each other. “I think this is a make-work project, and in fact I’m embarrassed I even referred this to staff in the first place,” Guthrie said. Several motorcyclists urged councillors to scrap the idea. Doak McCraney noted municipalities which have implemented similar restrictions are now facing legal challenges. He said the provincial Highway Traffic Act already regulates what is a legal exhaust system and provides officers tools to charge motorists who are unnecessarily making noise. Bill Kerr, who came to the podium in a black and orange Harley Davidson jacket, said despite a notation to the contrary in the staff report, “Loud pipes do save lives.” Kerr provided two examples of near-misses with cars, which he attributed to being able to rev his bike and make sufficient noise he got the drivers’ attention. Fellow enthusiast Mike Theriault told council he rides a 1947 motorcycle, which would likely not pass the new noise standard. He added it would be nearly impossible to equip his bike with parts to allow it to pass. “You can’t just go and find these parts,” Theriault said. “It’s going to fail and I know it’s going to fail. “If it came off the (assembly) line that way why should it not be allowed?” Doug Godfrey, the city’s manager of bylaw compliance and security, said officers will have some discretion in applying the law and would take the age of the vehicle into consideration. The bylaw passed 10-2, with Guthrie and Kovach voting against it.
  6. Ok... Leaving for home tomorrow, but have a "noise" coming from where the gear oil is housed in... I heard the noise on Saturday... Took it to a dealer in Wichita, KS. by the time he test drove the bike the noise went away. The noise came back the next day and has been getting worse. Today I am in Custer, SD And we are heading home tomorrow... And now the noise is worse. A buddy felt the housing where the spline is at and could feel the sound. It is a clicking sound... Almost like a baseball card on spokes (just not as loud). I need to know what are the possibilities? If it needs gear oil, how to add more... And what weight oil do I need and anything else I might could use... I do NOT want to be stranded here and there is no BIKE shops here. Thanks for the QUICK help! Wally
  7. On the way home a new noise cropped up on my 88 after getting off the highway. Fairly loud gear whine when decel or coasting. Sounds as it is coming from rear end. Slightest bit of throttle quiets it right down. Checked pumpkin and engine oil, fine. Prior to this the bike made pretty much the same mechanical sounds as a brand new 2010 I took for a test drive. Some noise at coasting and decel but it definitely just got louder all of a sudden. This bike is new to me (64K mi now) so don't know what maintenance has been done to the splines drive pins etc. I'll pull it apart this weekend and have a look and slop some moly 60 in there. Is this a common noise (decel only) for dry splines and pins or am I looking at a bad rear pumpkin?
  8. i have a noise coming from the back end maybe from the final drive sounds like im dragging something metal on the ground at first i thought it was my mud flap dragging from riding 2 up but that is to high off the ground it does not make the noise when leaning right for right curbs only does this when leaning left or hitting bumps in the road on the center stand in neutral spinning the wheel there is one spot i feel where the wheel rubs something on my 84 any ideas what it could be before i start tearing things apart to repair i would like to make sure i have all the parts i need so i can do this in one day early morning tear apart late morning early after noon fix late after noon put together and ride im using my 84 as a daily rider until the 99 RSTD is running.
  9. I'm a little surprised as the bike has been so solid but what sounds like a serious noise has begun on my 86. While at cruising speed, if I lean in to a turn (either direction) I hear a howling noise that stops as soon as I straighten up. (rear wheel bearings ???) More recently I noticed that when coasting to a stop with the clutch lever in, I hear what actually sounds like gear mesh noise. I have also noticed that as the bike slows down, I feel and hear a vibration at around 15 mph. I am thinking rear wheel bearings or u joints?
  10. Expert ideas? Ive got this new sound in the last few days that seems to be coming from low in the bottom left front of the crankcase. When the engine is idling there is no clatter noise and it only seems to appear when I am under light to medium acceleration (I dont know if it makes it under WOT as the mufflers are making too much noise), as soon as I back off the throttle or pull in the clutch the noise goes away. The noise is not loud in 1st gear and seems to increase in 2nd and 3rd gearand continues in 4th and 5th. I am afraid it sounds to me like ive got a spun bearing somewhere in the transmission, but I need some experts (........and you guys too:stickpoke:) to weigh in on this and tell me what your thoughts are. Ill enclose i vid that was taken on the weekend an you can hear what I am talking about. it has a bit of an exhaust leak, but I am sure thats not the issue. I have also had the bottom of the collector opened up and the loose pieces taken out so it shouldnt be anything inside the exhaust. Thanks in advance for the help everyone!
  11. I was about 20 minutes into a nice ride yesterday and heard a strange noise from the front engine or tire area. The only way to describe it was as if the bike had run over a flattened pop can in the road. Short rasp and it was gone not to appear the rest of the day. No big thing. Today I am riding and the same noise appeared. Short rasp and it did not come back. Bike ran fine. There was nothing in the road that I saw and I watch carefully for rough surfaces when riding. Anybody ever experience somthing like this? I have an 03 RSTD with about 15K on it.
  12. How does one repair/replace/fix a ruptured cover for the noise sensing microphone on the VR radio controls? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83, 88 Venture
  13. I m wondering if a bearing is bad or the clutch basket is wobbling. I replaced the pressure plate bearing but the noise is still there. The noise is a whirring sound almost like something is wobbling coming from the gear area loudest at 3000 rpm, stops when I pull the clutch in. At idle a slight rumble goes away when I pull the clutch in. I get on acceleration a rumble/vibration coming from the gear area. The noise is really starting to bother me. The carbs have been synced. Any ideas?
  14. Uncledj is having a 'new' noise on his Venture. I can not determine what it is either. It is a somewhat metallic sound in the low end RPM ranges, seems to clear up above 4000 or so when I rode bike. I tried recording a clip of sound on each side with my Iphone, but noise is not very obvious on recording, and the right side clip sounds totally different from left side on recording which is not actual case. He has had complete exhaust system apart with nothing apparent found there. 15. I have engine noise in headset when intercom is on, the noise will go away if rpms are low enough. any thoughts? I've asked around town here but know one knows a thing including the dealers.
  16. so i got my radio up and running but when i put in a tape all i get is a grinding noise like the drive gears are not quite meshing any ideas on how to fix it?
  17. Had my 06 fairing laid forward for shock maintenance. When finished I tried to hook the battery back up. The + lead sparked even with the key off and it made a noise like a starter solenoid when the battery is low. Bike won't start and the battery goes dead in a short time. Again this happens with the key off...any ideas?
  18. Wife and I took the motorhome with my 87 on a trailer out to the East Coast for a bit of riding in the Ocean City area. When loading / unloading the ol' gal on the trailer, (the bike, not the wife), I noticed something on the underside of the bike nipped a weld at the back of the trailer. Apparantley there's a really close tolerance where the ramp ends and the trailer deck begins. I could see no damage on the bike,...nothing obvious broken or pulled apart, but I can see where the weld on the trailer was scraped. I learned that for easiest unloading I'll use the motorhome leveling jacks to lift the front of the motorhome, giving less of an angle on the loading ramp on the trailer. In any case, the bike seems to run ok, although the diaphrams need replaced (just ordered a new set) The thing is that she started making some sounds that I first thought were major problems, ....sounded like maybe a valve rapping, with an occasional backfire on low rpm / heavy throttle situations. Got the bike back to the motorhome, and let her cool down and gave her the once over, finding the source of all the noise was from the 1/4" hole in the bottom of the inlet of the left muffler. I kept riding, with the noise, and had no further problems, but am wondering what could be causing the increased exhaust flow through this hole. (compared to the other side) Right side barely has any exhaust leakage through it, and no noticeable noise......left side has noticeable exhaust flow and noise through this small hole. Any ideas what I should be looking for before I tear into it? Thanks y'all.
  19. 1985 VR, started hearing a clappy noise at start up and would quiet down after warmed up. i thought it was the "H" Pipe rattle eveyone complaines about and since it was the end of the season I didnt think too much of it. However I have been going to start the bike up at least once a month and letting it reach operating temp before shutting down. This last time I was starting think maybe my clappy noise was engine related and not exhaust. Below is a link to the video I just shot from a cold start and walk around trying to see if I could pin point where the clappy noise was comming from. I am hoping someone here with more experience is able to recognize the sound and tell me if it's exhaust or engine. I am hopping for exhaust as I plan on doing the HD muffler MOD and weld up the "H" pipe in the early spring. Thanks for your help. please use the link below to see the youtube video. 20. Attached are PDF scans of a 1987 Venture Service Handbook for Technical Training. I got a copy of this on Ebay a while back and got around to scanning & posting it today. It covers Ventures from 83 to 87. There are quite a few interesting tidbits in the information contained in this material. I don't think this is all the service bulletins up to this point. In the Front End Noise, I found a reference to a bulletin M83-015 which I don't have, relating to Instrument panel noise, but this is not listed in the contents section. I broke the scans up by sections so I could get them uploaded. Gary Files moved to tech library here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=71406
  21. Disregard this post...... upon further inspection i figured out how the cover was mounted.... MY 2007 Midnight RSTD has developed a "Buzzing" sound at high idle and 'at speed' - the noise is coming from the left lower fork cover. this cover has a little movement (the other side is solid) in it causing the buzzing.....i can temporarily fix it by simply pushing on the cover to stop the noise but eventually it starts all over again. I looked at my service manual to see if i could understand how this cover is secured, but the info isn't detailed enough to figure it out. I know we have some very knowledgeable members out there and hope one of you can offer advice. The incessant buzzing going down the road is ANNOYING !! Help ........ Buz
  22. Going to make a long story short. Got nice new J&M headsets. Before installing in helmet plugged into bike to make sure they worked and got hissing noise, front and rear on both sets of headsets. Tried combinations of headsets and cables too. Called J&M. They said it was from the bike and was amplifier related. So read lots of threads on our site. Checked out venturers.org too. I put headsets in helmets anyway (both full face, one Aria and one KBC), thought may as well use them and will do some more research and try fixing in week or so. We both get on the bike, plug in and no hissing problem. Hmmmmm? Decide I don't care why, let's ride. Later on Colleen gets off, unplugs and I start getting noise, both hissing and engine. Hmmmmmm? Now I do care. What was the difference? Well with only one headset connected you aren't going to need to use the intercom. Hmmmmmmm? With only rider plugged in, I found I could control the hissing and engine noise by lowing the IC volume. If I lowered the IC volume to 6 the engine noise went away. If lowered it all the way to 0 the hissing goes away. Ahhhhhhh, very sweet. Not saying this is the solution for all audio noise cases, we never got any background noise using just the speakers, but when using headsets I am able to control the background noise levels by using the IC volume based on number connected headsets. Works real nice for us.
  23. When I finally got a headset for my RSV, I was told it transmitted a buzzing noise over my voice. I attributed it to the cheap Motocom headset. I have since up graded to J&M headsets. This afternoon, the neighbor across the street asked me to listen for a radio check from his Wing. He came in loud and clear, but he said he could hear me ok, too, but there was a buzzing when I hit the transmit button. The buzzing is the same engine running or not running. Any suggestions???
  24. Finally got the rear tire mounted and wheel back on, but to what I think is to much gear noise. Not enough grease or did I put something back wrong? Little help please?
  25. Hi Folks: Before I get started, this is a post about the whining noise but not a request for information on how to fix it , as I have read about the clutch basket, the "I" basket and square cut gears. I'm new to this site and also new to the Venture motorcycle (owned one for two days). I love the bike in every way except for the unacceptably loud whining noise. I bought m bike used from a Yamaha dealer and I'm confused by the fact that they sold it to me without mentioning this problem and they won't take it back. I just bought a 2007 Royal Star Venture (two days ago !) from a Yamaha Dealer in Connecticut (I live in NY state). I found the bike on the internet and went over there to buy it. I was told by the salesman(who was bearing the same last name as that of the dealership) that it was "the oldest Yamaha dealer in the United States, still family owned for four generations". I wanted one of these bikes for touring, having ridden one only once, a year ago. I read many reviews on the bike and many comments from owners but never ran across anyone mentioning that one of the characteristics of the bike is an annoying whining sound at highway speeds, which can be termed unbearable. In fact, the one I rode a year ago didn't do this as I would have surely noticed. I didn't notice this noise when when I test rode the bike I just bought because its most noticeable at highway speed and the salesman coerced me into NOT taking the bike on I95 because "its a zoo out there at this time of day". It was only on the way home, after buying it that this unacceptable noise became apparent. The dealer represented the bike as a one owner bike which was in perfect running condition that had been ridden for 17,000 miles - the "cherry" that we are all always looking for. I got no great deal on the bike and basically paid top dollar for it because it was coming from a genuine Yamaha dealer who said he knew the owner and was purporting that the bike was a great bike. I had no problem paying that much for a bike in such great condition. Now, the dealer is telling me that this unbearable whine is a characteristic of the bike, like "they all do that". The one I rode last year didn't do this. In all of the rave reviews I read, not one of them mention that the bike has a characteristic annoying whine, so I don't think they all do it. But, probably, many of them do - but the ones that do are broken and need the "I" clutch basket. I was able to find out that SOME Ventures do this and the problem is fixable under warranty and there is loads of information about this problem going on for many years. Either the dealer knew about this or they aren't very good at being a dealer.I threw caution to the wind as I figured IF a Yamaha dealer was willing to sell me this bike (rather than dump it out the back door to a wholesaler), then it must be as good mechanically as it looks cosmetically (the bike is basically flawless in appearance and looks like new. I complained right away to the dealer and he told me that it is a characteristic of the bike. I told him that I understand that these bikes have an inherent whine but this bike is very loud and in the unacceptable range (unsolicited, my wife asked what the annoying noise was very soon into her first ride on the bike. Its bad. The dealer told me to bring it in on Monday (2 hours away) and he will have his mechanic look at it. I've got the feeling that this isn't going to lead me anywhere and I'm going to be told it is normal. The dealer says "He can't take the bike back because its been registered " I feel that this is a load of bull because he could buy it back for a dollar - he buys bikes all of the time. I feel that he either knowingly deceived me or has made a blunder that he should make good on. What are your thoughts ? Do you think, with all that is known about this problem, that a dealer could consider a bike that exhibits this noise to be sold as "perfect - just ridden for 17,000 miles " ? If the dealer doesn't make me smile on Monday, do I have a case to bring to Yamaha Corporation ? Your thoughts, advice and suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
