I got the posts and write-ups here on the site about greasing the splines and dampers under the circlip on the rear wheel. I have it all torn down here while the hurricane is overhead. I got Honda moly 60 lube. While in here lubing it, should I go ahead and pull the driveshaft so I can moly the driveshaft and u-joint? My '87 has 87,000 miles on it and I bet the shaft has never been serviced... Thanks to all!

I plan to grease up every thing in the rear end and the driveshaft of my RSV while the tires off for some fresh rubber. Should I use moly 60 on all the gears and the hub fingers or should I used bearing grease on the hub gears and fingers?

Hey folks I am in the process of changing my rear tire. I got it off the bike and thought I would clean and grease the drive hub,splines and pins. I have a tube of Super Tech Moly grease from Walmart in the shop and was wondering if this will do the trick or should I go get something else. thanks

I wanted to buy some Moly 60 paste. i found it online, but wanted to do some business locally. Well, i really did not want to wait on the shipping time. The parts counter guy was friendly and helpful, but said they don't have any and the requests for it are basically nill, so they don't stock it. I looked at him sort of funny and wondered what do the mechanics use? I said "Really? Well, alright then, i will order it online." He said "Ok, man, sorry." Since i have started riding again, I have been to all the motor cycle places in lake Charles, la and have been surprised at the lack of stuff for sale. Yes, you can find the basics. get a scooter, settle for an instock but not what you want helmet and an overpriced jacket and you are riding that day. (with approved credit!!) Since I was there, I figured I would look around. I guess i was really disappointed when i was walking around the show room and did not see any GWings. A salesman asked if he could help and i asked where they kept the GWings. They had none. Ok, i guess all these crotch rockets are supporting the electric bill. anyway we chatted about this n that and i was on my way empty handed. I ordered some moly off flea bay after looking around the net. I already knew that the Yama shop had no RSV's on the floor, so i didn't go by there to get some more of their inattentiveness. I went to home and cooked dinner. So how is service and part stock supply in your home town? anyone else get the same treatment?

My 1987 VR has 87,000 miles on it. The rear end definately roars at anything above 45mph. When you pull in the clutch at 60mph, you realize the roar is almost as loud as the engine, especially when turning. My tires are new, and the bike is running good, with no lurching, or anomalies when cornering. I greased the rear splines myself when I changed the rear tire only 3000 miles ago, but i can tell you it was not moly 60 grease by honda or moly paste. I intend on pulling the rear wheel and applying moly as my first step, then weigh out changing out the pumpkin. I'm not going to rebuild it- it is just too complex for me or my tool and skill set. i'll probably get a used one with 30k on it or something. How quiet are rear ends in perfect order? I have no way of evaluating this! As always, thanks! Old Man going down Mexico way....

Just info for those that want to know... In previous post some have mentioned Lithium grease instead of Moly for the driveline lube. I was browsing around the Honda Interactive Network this morning and pulled up the MSDS for the Moly-60. Here is a pic of the actual ingredients list... http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/MOLY60MSDS.jpg It has Lithium in it and there is almost 1/2 as much Lithium as Moly. And a little bit of 2 secret ingredients. And the reason the percentages don't add up is they only count the actual working ingredients, not the grease that's the carrier for them . (It's 15-20% of Moly by weight but about 60% of the 4 main ingredients) Edit: FYI, the company that provides Moly-60 to Honda is ThreeBond.

I just got MOLY 60 in the post I read some-wear in one of the post how much I should put in the rear drive is it 1/2 or 3/4 of a tea spoon if some one could let me know how much or better yet point me to where the post is I have bean looking all day to find it THANKS PIPER

I have read a few posts on this but still have a few questions. I plan on lubing the rear end in 3 places when I change my rear tire on my 07 RSV. Rear hub drive pins Rear hub splines Rear drive shaft splines (front and back) This is the first time I have done this. The shop manual says to use Lithium soap for rear hub area and Moly for driveshaft. I have read posts about the Honda Moly 60 paste on this site. I mentioned the Moly 60 paste to my dealer who was hesitant to use something with such a high Moly content. I didnt get into a big discussion with him as I want him to stand behind me if there are problems in the future. He has no problem with me doing my own service but seemed to be more comfortable with the lithium soap on rear and normal moly on the driveshaft. Is there a real compelling reason to use Moly 60 or is it more important that you simply grease things to spec? Are the three areas above all that need greasing in the rear end? Any feedback is always appreciated. Thanks Jim

I replaced the factory installed BrickStone tires at 6,500 miles as the rear was getting worn out. So, while I had the rear tire off, I decided to pull the drive-shaft and grease the splines with Honda Moly 60 grease. I also greased the splines and the fingers that are on what the service manual calls the "Clutch hub." (Item 7 on page 7-13 of the service manual) Of course I cleaned off the factory installed grease before applying the Moly 60. I have seen Scheaffer gear oil #209 and 209A have Moly in them, but I cant find any locally so I also changed the rear end gear lube with some Amsoil Synthetic gear oil I had. I put some Moly 60 in the rear end. About 1/4 teaspoon full to add some Molybdenum Disulphide to the rear-end as those gears take quite a bit of shock load when shifting gears. I did NOT change the engine/clutch/transmission oil, so I don't think the noise reduction came from that area. Too bad the engine and transmission share oil with the clutch..... I would like to put Molybdenum Disulphide in them too but it would probably ruin the clutch................... OH I used an Acid Brush from the plumbing department of the hardware store to apply the grease. I cut the brissles off to only about 3/8" long so they would be stiff. I applied the grease in a light coat. I wish I could easly get at the universal joint at the front end of the drive shaft, so I could use the Moly 60 on it. It looks lite the middle gear is lubricated by the engine/clutch/transmission oil, so I cant apply Moly 60 to it

Today I had a local shop completely go thru the rear diff and I've now got moly 60 'embedded' in the drive splines and pins, and Royal Purple Gear Lube on the 'wet' side of the wheel. Also, I had them re-shoe the front hoop, its now a nice new Dunlop E3. So far, its handling good, and the driveline seems quieter and smoother. I'm ready for my trip to Sturgis now! We're pulling out of the Amarillo area on Sunday, and should be arriving in Sturgis on Monday afternoon. Staying at Glencoe Campground.
