Man Who Said He Was 'Massaging' Meat Gets 10 Years S.C. Man Convicted Of Stealing $80 New York Strip POSTED: Friday, January 8, 2010 UPDATED: 4:48 pm EST January 8, 2010 ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for stealing an $80 slab of meat. The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported Thursday that 51-year-old Mark Zachary of Orangeburg received the maximum sentence after jurors found him guilty Wednesday of shoplifting. Prosecutors said the sentence was justified because the Aug. 26 theft from Reid's grocery store in Orangeburg was his ninth offense. Authorities said when a store manager approached Zachary about the missing New York strip and the big bulk under his shirt, he fled, right into the arms of an off-duty police officer. Assistant Solicitor Glenn Justis asked jurors "Where's the beef?" in his opening argument. Zachary testified he was "massaging" the meat, not stealing it.

Planning a tour through South Western Ontario next week. I'll be somewhere between Windsor, Brantford, Orangeville and The Bruce. My focus is to rally small meat markets\butchers together in trying to change the way our provincial government is handling the inspection system. I suppose it could be seen as a holiday and I kind of like that idea, but I will be focused on this issue, as change is drastically needed in order to save businesses such as ours. Trouble is, most guys feel that they are all alone and have to deal with the government on a one to one basis, so I plan to change that thought somewhat,, maybe even start a new association. So if you know of a small meat market or butcher, let me know, I'll try to pay them a visit.

Today the wife and sons packed 1 Belted Galloway beefer and 2 pigs into our 2 meat Freezers. We raised these animals ourselves and had em done for the Freezer this week. Now all of our Freezers (4 total) are packed with good meat and our own garden veggies. The dry Larder is full of great stuff the wife canned this season as well. It's gonna be a battle keeping the weight off once I put the bike up for the Winter..........

I'm home alone tonight so I looked in the freezer to see what was in there and I swear we could eat for a year without shopping. I found a few meat pies (Tourtière) that Leslie and I made so I put one in the oven. Boy did that hit the spot and bring back lots of memories too. When my mom died in 1995 Leslie took on the job of baking the meat pies every Christmas. Last year (2006) we made 30. A lot are given to family and friends but I still have a couple left. When they're gone they're gone but I will enjoy every bite and think of the time spent with Leslie stirring the pot while she made the pie shells. I need to look a little more and see if there's any fruit cake left in there...LOL. We made that every Christmas too. I have never had any as good as her's.

Carl, Thought of you and how much better job you would be doing yesterday and again today. We are butchering 3 hogs and cutting up 1/2 beef! We do everything on the hogs and just cut up the beef. My cousin's raise hogs and this is an annual occurence. We get the beef from my cousin's friend and the meat locker shoots, skins and lets it hang for a few weeks. So 1/4 Beef and 1/2 Hog costs me about $300. Whole lot better than store prices. We have meat saw, grinder for sausage, hamburger, and cure the Hams, bacon. Its seems a lot of work, but cost wise worth it. Do have a question for you. Do you have a supplier for those butcher gloves that help protect you from cuts? I had a friend that was head meat cutter for a supermarket that would get me some, but he was laid off when the store closed. Thanks, Have a good day. Jay
