Bike was feeling kind of sluggish and sloppy in turns so I check the tire pressure. Rear had 45 PSI and the front had 35PSI. I am running Dunlop Elite 3 front and rear. I am about 320 pounds. So a lot of weight on the tires. I know the front sidewall said 41 max. I ran it up to 40 and it is a whole different feel. Almost like it is to much and the front tire feel like a teeter totter on a point now instead of a rounded tire. So my question is with my weight, what should I be running in the tires if the sidewall says 41 max. And this is unloaded and just my body weight and the bikes weight. Thanks
-
OK, I've just noticed that my current rear tire says 42# max. Maybe I'm going nuts, but, I seem to remember they used to say 50# max. I've been running it at 47#. What does your Avon rear tire sidewall say? If yours says the same, what do you make of it? Is it no longer safe above 42#? Thanks.

It has been a while since I anounced my intention to replace my Venture's tires with the New Bridgestone Exedra Max tires. So here is the latest on that. I finally got the Exedra Max tires mounted today. I think they are a good looking tire. At least as good as a black-wall tire can be. Their profile seems a bit rounder than the old Exedra. That should improve cornering quite a bit. The tread on the rear is really deep. Tire pressure is 41 and 42. Since it was cool I put them at 40. I will see where that takes them when they warm up. Also Bridgestone rates them highly for rain and the tire groves look like they can move some water. Being in Seattle it won't take long to discover the truth in that. On to the road test. For break in, other than rocking back and forth on the straight aways, I didn't do anything special. The first thing I noticed was the loud noise from my old tires was gone. For now at least these tires are very quiet. Yea. At freeway speed handling seemed normal, good. Lane changing and maneuvering is exactly where I like it to be. Long sweeping turns were quite enjoyable. I didn't pick up on any unpleasant traits. Another yea. Now for the acid test. Off to the parking lot. Lock over u-turns and sharp cornering was exceptional. A much better feel than either the old Bridgestones or the Dunlop 404s. That's three yeas. Summary It is difficult when comparing new tires to old ones. And I would have preferred white walls. But for the initial ride these tires seemed to meet all of my expectations. Only time will tell if these early perceptions will hold up. Or if the multi compound rubber provides the additional tire life I am hoping for. But for now I think the Max is a winner. And it comes in the right sizes. Mike

My good friend, Cowboy, has a 2001 Yamaha 1600. He is starting to have some slippage in the clutch. I went on a search on the internet and found the Service Manual for his bike as well as a great write up on changing out the clutch springs, clutch disk and oil pump gear. (On some of the older 1600’s there was a weakness in the oil pump gear and many folks swapped them out when they did the clutch springs.) My friend looked at everything I sent him, including a website to get the parts he would need. He traded emails with the parts manufacturer with some technical questions he had and the direction it took cracked me up so much I just had to share it with you. I have edited out non- pertinent stuff to shorten it and redacted company names to protect the guilty. Here is the email thread. Enjoy: The Cast: Cowboy – My friend Max - President/Product Design AKRefugee - Me COWBOY: Hi Max, I sent a email yesterday about replacing the oil pump gear at the same time. Did you ask your fiend what he recommends? Hollerback Yah'll, Cowboy MAX: This is all I could get: “Some earlier years had a weak oil pump shaft that could be upgraded.” COWBOY: Max, Thank you very much for your quick response I'm going to do more research about that pump shaft. I've got the feeling that I'm going to replace that while I'm in there to do it right. Meanwhile if someone tells you of a recommended replacement pump shaft, manufacturer and part number, kindly pass it along to me. That would be much appreciated. Meanwhile I will be calling to do business with you within the next 3 weeks. You will be hearing from me. I'm impressed with your timeliness. Till then, Happy Trails, Cowboy MAX: My brother is being a little thick headed…He does that If I get more I will forward it along. Meanwhile YES replace it. COWBOY: FYI, The engine oil pump drive shaft was not part of the transmission recall for 2001 Roadstars. There is superseded part # on this component meaning that Yamaha engineers did improvements to this part. I got this Information from a very reputable service shop manager and parts manager (redacted), (Service is Joe, and Parts is Steve). This is a bonafide Yamaha Retailer. So if anybody calls about all Roadstars up to 2001 (V1600's) and asks about this oil pump shaft it is recommended by many of the Yamaha Roadstar forums. The part costs $68.97 COWBOY: Max, Can you look into this because I need an answer from you or your engineers on this subject that has just come to my attention. Steve at (redacted) said something about clutch "cork" degradation as the clutches wear vs. Kevlar degradation. He said the stock clutches as they wear the cork sludge doesn't hurt the tranny but that the Kevlar degradation or sludge does. What's the skinny on this? Please reply. THIS IS WHERE THE FUN BEGINS MAX: My answer is simple- Stop listening to those nitwits COWBOY: I hear you but I would like a technical answer to this. I know that they're trying to steer me away from your product. I am convinced that yours is a far superior product as far as performance is concerned but the affect on the wearability on the tranny in the long run is a concern to me as a consumer as well. I was a Senior Product Designer for 14 years in the defense industry so I do have a technical background. Please look into this for me. A plausible explanation of why this is not true is all I ask for. Thanks Cowboy MAX: It’s a false negative. It is simply NOT true! o The moon is made of cheese. o “Not its not!” (max) o How do you know you have never been there….! COWBOY: Max, Please respond technically. I respect you, please respect my request. At this point my friend sent it to me saying you won’t believe this you have to read this. COWBOY: AKRefugee. I'm sending you this discourse that I had with the president of (redacted). Can you believe his responses ! Read Below. Unbelievable !!!!! AKRefugee: Wow, that was an "interesting" response. One of those "trust me I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express" moments. I will check my sources and see what they have to say. My gut feeling thought is that the Yammi guy really doesn't know s**t from shinola on the subject so he pulled something out of his a** that he heard someone else say one time. Remember this is the same shop that sent me out the door with rear brake pads that were so worn that they could have flipped in the caliper and killed me so I am a bit leery of their shops folks anyway. As far as I know, oil degradation is what causes sludge and that has nothing to do with the material being lubricated, only the operating temps and outside contaminants, but remember I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I might be pulling something out of my butt as well ;-). I have asked my friend to keep me updated on any additional responses and will post them here if he sends me anymore of this conversation. I just hope that the future responses as as funny as these last ones,

Have you ever had low audio output on your 1st gen?
rstacy posted a topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
The radio and CB in my 86 work. Its just that they aren't very loud. I would say that max volume gives about 50% output. My 89 easily blows it away in volume. Connections are good at the radio and amp. Any thoughts? -
I've had my project Venture up and running for a while now but I am having problems getting up to 14 volts when running. My head light is dim and signals slow. Battery is fully charged and the bike starts and runs fine. Volts will read a max of 13.8 at 3000 rpm. Is it the stator or something else that I can look at? Mike Smegielski Waterbury, CT

Ok here's the problem. When I turn up the volume to about 15 on the radio control, that's about as high as I need to go without being too loud in my headsets. At the same time my wife has to turn hers( the rear control) to max to be able to hear at all when we are out riding. I thought it might be in the helmet but it does this with different helmets. I've even taken one helmet and hooked it up to the front, adjusted the volume to where it almost too loud for me, unhooked it and plugged it in to the rear, and still have to turn it to max to be able to hear anything. This is on a 09 RSV. I thought it might be in the connections in the fairing, so I took them all apart, inspected , cleaned, put on some dielectric grease, but the problem remains. Really don't want to take it back to the stealer, I've been burned too many times! I guess I need also to mention, it's not got anything to do with the brand of headsets since I've tried IMC, Edsets, and some really cheap brands. The result is always the same. Anyone else had this problem???? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

my wife wanted to take a ride to Roanoke Va. today, about 130 miles each direction. i decided that since the max speed limit anywhere i drove today would be 65 mph max, that i would make the entire trip in fourth gear. 98% of my riding is two up and my gas mileage lately has been around 33mpg but that was using fifth gear. my max speed today was 70 mph indicated on the speedo and if mine is 7% off then i was actually doing around 65 mph. the terrain from where i live to Roanoke is mildly hilly, so driving @ 65 in fourth kept the rpms in basically the sweet spot and especially pulling the hills. on my refill on the way back home the odo was showing 180 miles and it took 4.3 gals. to top it off - so essentially i got 42 mpg, which is 9 mpg better than i was previously getting. i would like to open up this strategy for discussion, such as pros/cons of fourth gear engine rpms vs. fifth gear engine rpms on longer trips. can anyone with a tach on the rsv or rstd tell me the rpms @ 70 mph indicated in fourth gear vs. rpms @ 70 mph indicated in fifth gear. i understand that fourth gear is technically an overdrive gear but am interested in your opinions. looking forward to the discussion, thanks ! buz

After 8.5 years I sold my Vmax with the idea of buying a Venture. I came close to jumping on a few first gens and also a few second gens. Had a 99 all picked out but when I made the call they had sold it... guy emailed me after and said he had a 08 with 1100 miles on it. Checked the warranty date and held my breath for pics. Made the deposit that night. 10 days and the hole in my shop will be filled. She won't be as quick but I can always borrow my old max if I wanna go fast. I am anxious to see how the comfy people live. Thanks for all the ideas the forums have planted in the last few weeks...my wallet hates you all! Frank

Anyone know what it is.... Where to find it? max load on a 2nd Gen Venture is 419 lbs. most trailers say 10 to 15% toungue weight, so 200lb trailer would be 20-25 lb. unigo trailers say 33% tongue weight, of a 180lb loaded trailer so 60Lb. Am looking into creating a trunk like luggage carrier fully supported by the receiver hitch.. Can't find any documentation from Yamaha that says one way or the other...

Ok Folks... I just bought a time out Dart recently... and I'm wondering where to set the tire pressure... The guy I bought it from said to keep it about 10 - 15 psi, But, the max load on the tire says 90 psi. I realize that I'm not gonna be pushing the "Max Load" of the tire, but thought 10 - 15 sounded awfully low. The tires are "Carlisle USA Trail" tires 4.80-12. Thanks

Larry, When you and "T" went out to cover your scoot Saturday night, did either of you take my bike for a spin? When I started out of the parking lot Sunday morning, I noticed the "MAX SPEED" entry on my Garmin was 141mph!!!!!!! Yeah I should have taken a picture of it...

Checked into a Holiday Inn Express WauseonOhio just past Toledo. Kinda pricy but nice. We are off the Ohio Turnpike, with about 3 hrs max riding time tomorrow. See ya at the Airport Inn tomottow!!

2005 Venture, What is the max. air pressure i can put into the shock to raise my bike to get into my trailer ? The pressure will only be used to get into the trailer, not riding. t/y Cb

Towing this Fibro concept Trailer ,I dont feel like its behind me, My question to you is how much air pressure do I put in these tires, I see that the tires on this trailer have Carisle Sport and Max pressure is 90 psi

Man, today was a beautiful day for riding. I took "Big Gal" out for about 150 miles and then took "Max" out for about 40 miles. Talk about "night and day"! Max really likes to stretch his legs. Today was the first time I've had the Vmax out in a couple of months. BTW, yesterday I changed the fuel filter on "Big Gal". While I was in there I relocated the filter up under the seat. It was a real PITA to get to in the original location. Pics below. Before and after relocating filter.

I have an '08 with about 6800 miles on it. My neutral light stays illuminated all the time...when in "neutral" it is at it's brightest, as I shift up it gets less bright but still keeps some illumination. As I shift down it gets brighter and hits it's max again when I actually put it in neutral. Has anyone else had this problem or can tell me what the problem is?? Thanks...

The manual states the maximum weight you can place on an 09 RSV is 418 pounds, including rider, passenger, gear (helmets, etc.) and luggage. Thats not a whole lot. Is this max weight more to do with tire wear and emissions than what the bike frame can safely support? From some of the pics and posts in here, people are loading WAY over 418lbs of trailers, accesories, rider, etc. Heck, I'm 280 of the 418 pounds!

There's a few other threads on this ... just wanted to add more info in case anyone is looking to get some paint to match their scoot here in Canuck Land CMAX, a division of UAP-NAPA apparently does this. Here in Vancouver there is a location at 8555 Cambie St. The beauty of this is, they can scan your paint and match it. This is good especially for older paint jobs which have faded some. Here's a link... http://www.uapinc.com/client/en/pieces-auto/CMAX.html I haven't personally gone there yet or tried this but just thought it would be good info to share. Came across this in a newspaper article. The article went on to say that they can also provide the product in a spray can good for small areas or touch-ups. ___________________________________________________________________ · Article rank · 23 Jul 2009 · 24 Hours Vancouver · DAVE REDINGER NEIGHBOURHOOD MECHANIC It’s easy to match your car’s finish I have often said in this column that today’s cars are complicated and not easily repaired when things start to go sideways. This change in technology has vastly reduced the range of repairs the individual owner can do successfully. One area the owner can still address with relative ease is the car’s finish. Even though vehicle paints have gone high tech, there are services available to help to colour match your car’s finish. We use C MAX, a division of NAPA. The staff at C MAX will scan your paint sample, mix the appropriate match and supply you with an easyto-use spray can. We usually send a painted part of the car for a match; however the scanning equipment is portable and as such can scan the car wherever it is. Advantages of scanning your car with this system are obvious. Paint changes colour as it ages. This system matches the actual colour your car is now. After years of weathering and fading the original formula would no longer match. For more information, call C MAX at 905-602-9083.
