  1. Hey all, I've got a 1999 RSV with 46k miles and I noticed yesterday that when I do 60 mph, I get a humming noise from the rear tire. when I lean to the right the humming becomes MUCH louder, & when I lean the bike to the left its just a little bit louder. When I speed up to 70 mph or slow down to 50 mph, the humming goes away. I believe it's been there for awhile, I just usually have the stereo playing and have never noticed it. Does this sound like a worn wheel bearing? and when it hits its harmonic frequency at 60mph it humms? Is replacing the wheel bearings a difficult task? Do I need to purchase any special tools to accomplish this? Thanks D.W.
  2. Are the Rk exhausts that much better sounding that they are worth putting on. I don't want them loud but a little louder than the stock exhaust.
  3. I am going to need to cut open my best collector after the spare I had on my bike had the output pipe on the right muffler break off. I took my other collector off last fall because it was rattling bad. My question is, if I take the center wall out that seperates the two sides, will it make the bike louder? I have had a set of Jardines on the bike for about ten years and really don't want the bike to be any louder. In the tech write up, it does state that it opens up the bike a little, like putting a crossover pipe behind a set of headers on a car. Suggestions appreciated. RandyA
  4. This one surprised me a bit. The Hella disk type horns were actually louder than the Stebel Magnums. http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-horns/horn-comparison-part-2/
  5. Has anyone gone with the black Stebel Nautilus and mounted it as the second horn under the front fairing, and would it accomplish the same thing? My OEM is already chrome so buying one of the Stebel chromes, and mounting it on the right side would only get me a louder horn...not add to the bling... The blacks Stebels have a better price, and wonder if anyone has gone that direction and the result...??
  6. As some of you noticed last MD I have Roadhouse mufflers on my 09 RSV. They have always had a nice deep tone to them but not overly loud. Well, all that changed and things got progressively louder to the point it was annoying to say the least. So, I ordered some ceramic muffler repacking off the internet and decided to tackle the job of repacking the mufflers hoping to get back to that deep mellow tone. Most of the steel wool insulation that came in the pipes had already burned out so I wrapped the new stuff around the baffles and reinserted them back into the cans. I was very disappointed!!! They were actually louder than before I repacked them!! Lucky for me, I still had the original mufflers, so I put those back on until I can find the oem packing for the Roadhouse mufflers. When I first started the bike after putting the oem(Yamaha) mufflers on it I thought, "Man this sure sound anemic"!! But after riding it for the last couple of days, I kinda like the quiet! Now, I said all that to say this. If any of you decide to tackle repacking your mufflers and want to buy the ceramic insulation because it has extremely high temp qualities and won't burn out, DON'T!! But if you like it obnoxiously loud, then by all means, go ahead and purchase this material. But until I get mine(Roadhouse mufflers) to sound like they did when I first bought them, I'll be riding around as quiet (stock oem mufflers) as a mouse!!!
  7. Well, I thought I'd like my 86 lst Edition louder so I installed a brand new set of Macs, heck they could be Jardines for all I know as they look exactly alike and boy did I have a hard time finding them. But after riding it for a few months and about 1000 miles, I couldn't wait to get the thing quieted down to stock noise levels again but I had to wait for a set of the double down turn extensions. Finally obtained those from another member here so I could reinstall the stock mufflers. She is back to being quiet. If I want noisy, I can always take my Ultra out for a spin and I really don't mind a loud sounding Harley; two cylinders of 750 cc each sure do sound differently that four cylinders of 325 each. Maybe someone here will want these Macs, don't know in this economy. I will be posting them in the Classifieds here real soon. Silence is golden.
  8. I have the common chirp, now I have a new sound at or above 70 it sounds like an old ford truck rear noise or a cement mixer . The dealer said it was the rear greased and realigned shafts. Noise a bit better but still there it actually sounds as if it from the front but hard to tell. On a curve when leaning it is louder . Can anyone provide any suggestions, is this common and is it safe ? 2006 rstd with 9000 miles . Thanks for any info you can provide.
  9. May need to replace my muffler cans for my 1987 Venture. The previous owner knocked out the baffles. A little louder than normal but not too bad, however, will this affect the engine performance??
  10. After trying a louder exhaust (barons 424). That seemed to help untill I got used to them or the whine got LOUDER. Well I decided after reading many posts on the subject to try the I basket. Went to my dealer and explained the problem, he checked with yamaha and ordered the I basket. After reading so many horror stories about the dealers not wanting to do this under warranty I thought I would have to argue but that was not the case. Dealer ordered the part and I checked that it was the I basket when it came in. I dropped the bike off yesterday and he called for me to pick up today. I must say that I'm AMAZED at how quiet it is. I'm VERY happy I had this done. Now I only hope it stays this quiet I guess only time will tell. Here's a link of the whine.....[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzN9EMtI0_s]YouTube - Yamaha royal star tour deluxe whine?[/ame] and I will try to post one of how it sounds now this weekend.
  11. Last week when I was getting onto a busy highway from a side road, at about 7000-8000 rpms or so, I started hearing a horrible howling. When I shifted, it went away, but it came back and then gone again as I went through the gears. It sounds as though its coming from the exhaust. It seems to be come and go depending on the rpms and/or how much of a load I'm putting on the engine. As in, if I'm going down the highway at about 70mph, it is hardly there. But if I start up a hill and I maintain that speed, the howling gets louder. Today I took off both mufflers and went down the road to see if it still made the howl. Sure enough, it does. When it hits the right frequency, I can even hear it over the extremely loud noise coming out of the collector without the mufflers. I took some loose baffles out of the collector a couple years ago that were rattling. After that the exhaust sounded a bit "hollow" but not to loud or annoying. This howl sounds similar but 100 times louder. I left one baffle in there that looked like it was still welded in place quite securely. I can't imagine it could make that kind of noise if that baffle came loose. It sounds as though when the exhaust hits the right frequency, it begins to resonate inside the collector and get louder. After everything cools off enough, I'm gonna try to stick my head and a flashlight under the bike and try to look down the collector and see what it looks like. Anybody else ever have this problem? I've never heard an engine make this kind of sound, so I'm assuming its the exhaust. I have another collector her that I was gonna try, so I could go through the process of elimination, but the mounts have been broken off. Anybody have an extra laying around they might want to sell? Thanks, Bill
  12. Why and did it help in preformance ? Not looking for louder pipes. cb
  13. Sometimes when going about 60 mph, I hear a high pitched sound coming from I-don't-know-where. If the bike is straight up, it goes away. If I lean slightly left or right, it's there, significantly louder than the wind and road noise. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm accelerating, decelerating or pull in the clutch and coasting. Since it only seems to happen at one small range of speed, gets much louder when at a slight angle, and doesn't seem to change with accel/decel, my guess is that it's the tires, but I thought I'd post here just in case it's something that needs to be addressed. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Do (Dunlop 404) tires whine at certain speeds?
  14. just wondering if some of the internal components can wear enough for my 2000 model to seem like its getting alot louder........maybe its just me and old age...lol......any advice would be appreciated....thanks
  15. Here I am with my RoadKing pipes (slip ons) and they have a nice rumble to them when it's cold out but now in the summer heat they are tamed down and sound like all the other RSV.. not bad.. no worries.. But Hmm what if I wanna have a louder sound? Not talking about ear splitting racket but a manly-man sounding bike, ya know? (yes, you know what I mean I keep seeing references on making the RK pipes louder but can't find info how to do it or if it's reversible.. Or would I be better off with a new set of slipons, ones that are meant for the RSV, that offer a nice sound.. The Baron 4-2-4 I've heard and didnt like the look or sound, unfortunately, sorry.. What's everyone else running that they enjoy most? Thanks in advance. Cheers
  16. Right speaker louder then the left. Is there a way to balance the speakers?
  17. I was down at the dock taking some measurements at the bottom of the steps when I heard a humming noise that got louder and louder. I thought it was an approaching aircraft as there has been a fair bit of air traffic as a result of an air-show over the weekend. It was getting rather loud and must have been fairly close because I could feel a vibration in the air... it was then that I looked up and realized I was amidst a swarm of bees! The bees made a cloud that was at least 25ft in diameter and were blocking my exit from the dock. After about twenty minutes the swarm was starting to thin as they were collecting in an adjacent tree, they didn’t seem too interested in me so I cautiously made my way past them and out in the clear. What a relief! Buzzing insects make me nervous and can be quite startling for me (especially when I’m riding along and catch one in the helmet... don’t ask me how I know!). I’ve never witnessed anything like this before so it was quite an experience. Here are some photos as they started collecting in the tree…
  18. My 07 is just over 3000 miles and it seem over the last two weeks the bike is getting louder.. I have had to turn up the volumn on the stereo up two numbers.. It sounds mostly like exhaust tone,, I haven't put a wrench on the exhaust collars but they seem tight. Is this normal?
  19. Found an interesting article on the fuzz using louder exhaust. It's seemed funny that it said there was no proof that louder exhaust reduces accidents but it was very clear to me. I had a stock Dynaglide muffler on a Suzuki S40. Not real loud but a bit more then the too quiet stock one. I used to average having someone switch into my lane once a day. With the muffler change it never did end up happening again, though with time eventually some blind moron would have done it. 20. 200 plus miles sence i put on the RK mufflers andthey were new when i put them on, Well i noticed today they seem a little louder... Not much, You think they are getting "broke in" or is it just me?
  21. Hey all: don't post much but am on here daily but I need some advice on how to remove the honeycomb wire mesh that is in one of my 07 RK exhaust pipes. I put them on my 07 RSV three months ago and are much louder than stock. It is in the left one only and yes I have drilled both pipes out in front and back and they sound great but it seems the left pipe isn't as loud. I also wonder if its worth my time to even take it out as I don't know if it will make it any louder. any thoughts or advise appreciated. Happy holidays to ALL!!! Brian D.
  22. I have an '87 VR. The last few weeks I have started getting what I would describe as an exhaust noise getter progressive louder....it has now stopped getting louder but is still there...it's not REAL louder but definitely louder then it should be. When sitting on the bike it sounds like it's coming from the left front area. Inspected the bike today...no obvious holes or leaks in the exhaust. When I'm off the bike the noise sounds like it's coming from the right side......found the clamp holding the rear muffler section to the front pipe was loose and missing the bolt. Took that apart and cleaned everything, put in a new bolt and snugged everything up......didn't solve the problem at all. Could it be a carb diaphragm causing that sort of noise? I am starting a home renovation project in the next week so I don't want to get into too much on the bike right now....was thinking more of a winter project. Any ideas?
  23. Hello everyone, I'm new to the RSV world. I just bought my '05 midnight special two weeks ago(traded in an '03 Valkyrie for it) and love it. I've already put 800 miles on it. I've noticed this chirping sound in it and have read some of the threads on here about it. It is pretty annoying. What is it? On my bike it starts at about 50 and gets louder all the way through any reasonable cruising speeds up to 75(I haven't tried cruising above that and don't intend to). The salesman I bought it from rides an '01 and he said his does it too, that it was normal. Is that true or is there something that I need to have done to it?
  24. What can be done with the exhaust system on an 05 Tour delux. I'm looking for a louder rumble. I had deafening on my last bike and while attention getting, there was enough draw backs I don't want something that loud again. and I don't really want to get the drill out either, help me guys what's available (links or pic's if you got 'em please)
  25. Scoobi Doo was abit intimidated by Lowell ......He Gerrrrrrrrrrrred ...Louder than he did
