  1. Ok- I have been a dabbler with Linux for many years. With the advent of Windows 8 I am much closer to dumping Microsoft in favor of a Linux box for our HTPC. However, I have not been able to find a Blu-Ray software program that will run under Linux in a SIMPLE way. I am talking load disc, click on an icon and enjoy movie. Anyone know of such a critter? It can be free or paid. JB
  2. So after a not very painful process I got rid of MS Windows:) on both my laptop (HP with Vista) and my netbook (MSI with XP) and have moved on to Linux (Mint w/ Cinnamon on my laptop and Olicloud on my netbook). I might try some other desktop interfaces but pleased with my current setup, will give me some things to do this winter in case its cold and rainy. Everything running smoothly and faster. Now to go back and refresh my memory on all the unix/linux commands so I can play around in a terminal window. Only problem I haven't found an EASY linux solution for was updating the maps on my Garmin Zumo 550 (no linux support at Garmin) but I can use my wifes MAC for that as needed. Currently using Shotwell to organize over 10,000 photos in my spare time.
  3. I came up on the waiting list today and was able to order one of the Raspberry Pi single board computers. Paid for it via Paypal. Says up to 3 week delivery time. Raspberry Pi is a single board computer the size of a cigarette pack. Runs linux. total cost for the computer was $43 inc postage. requires a usb keyboard & mouse & video (one of several options). And a way to download their version of linux to a 4gb SD memory card. Or you can buy a pre-loaded memory card for another $18. The computer was designed by some university types in the UK for use by school kids learning to program. But at the price, a lot of people who want to try linux and programming are going to buy one. http://www.raspberrypi.org/

    linux os

Ok, I know this has nothing to do with a motorcycle but here goes anyway. Do any of you use Linux or one of the variations of Linux Os on your computers? I'm putting together a system and would like to know what to expect. Is it hard to set up and maintain? I'm just tired of paying "taxes" to Microsoft all the time. I'm looking for something different. As far as my knowledge of computers, I'm not a computer nerd, but I'm also not computer illiterate. Any advice would be much appreciated.
  5. "a real Venture" ... thought I'd include that just to make it "legal" for the site LOL anyhoo... playing with Linux distro's again... currently typing this from within Firefox on a Ubuntu Linux OS. One real interesting thing is that even the current Linux OS recognizes my HP Scanjet 4100c where Windows Vista won't ... go figure eh? ... ole Microsoft POS Just wondering what some of you others are running for Linux disto's (RedHat, Fedora, Suse...??)
  6. No, I didn't buy a 2nd gen... I installed Ubuntu Linux and here I am! I set this up on my home PC while retaining my original Windows XP OS... now have a dual boot loader. Decided to move to Linux at home as I'm installing it onto one of my servers at work, replacing Windows 2003 Enterprise. Of the 5 servers we have, the Linux server will play a small role, acting as a "disaster recovery" storage box for all the data as well as the other server's images which are updated on a weekly basis. The decision to move to Linux was mostly monetary as we're replacing our first domain controller and didn't want to purchase another copy of Windows 2003 server. We can use the copy from the converted Linux box. I've been experimenting with Linux for several years; however, this is the first time I've used it in a real world situation. Gotta say...it's GREAT!
