I just bought a '99 RSV, and the original owner had replaced the ignition switch, leaving me with a different key for the rest of the locks. My question is, since they are double-sided keys, if two locksets can be cut on the same key? I know there are more pins/tumblers in these locks, but on older Ford vehicles you could cut 2 different vehicle ignition keys on one key, one on one side, one on the other, it would require a blank key to start out with. Just an inquiring mind thing.

Several days ago as I left a meeting at our church, I desperately gave myself a personal TSA pat down. I was looking for my keys. They were not in my pockets. A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing. Suddenly I realized that I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My wife has scolded me many times for leaving the keys in the ignition. My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them. Her theory is that the car will be stolen. As I burst through the doors of the church, I came to a terrifying conclusion. Her theory was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then I made the most difficult call of all. “Honey,” I stammered. (I always call her “honey” in times like these.) “I left my keys in the car, and it has been stolen.” There was a period of silence. I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard her voice, “Ken,” she barked, “I dropped you off!” Now it was my time to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, “Well, come and get me.” She retorted, “I will ... as soon as I convince this policeman that I have not stolen your car!”

I traded my 03 for a new 09, and got 5 keys after I got home 1 key worked the ignition and trunk and 1 set works with one set of bags the other set work with the other bag. So I called the dealer and talked to salesman he said to stop in and talk to him and he will get me a nother key for ignition, stoped in and salesman is with someone so I walked over to parts dept. They said they can't help only the salesman can get me a key, or charge me $10 for a key. So after 1/2 hour salesman makes a key. I know they would never do this at a Harley dealer. My 03 had the same key for everthing, do most of you you have the same key for ignition and bags?

While this tip would be most effective for those who don't park their car in garage, it still could be effective for cars parked in garage, as alarm would still be heard in driveway, although it would not be as loud. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car.The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

Do we have any locksmiths here? It seems as though I remember a while back that we had a member or two who could cut us some keys. I ran all over the place looking for someone who could make a couple duplicate keys for my Maxim and the kids scooter locally. Not even any of the steelerships could cut a cycle key. I have the keys in hand and I'm assuming they can be made if the locksmith has the number stamped on them? Even if I can just get the blanks would be nice. Then I could take them to the local hardware store to have them cut. Thanks, Bill

A friend of mine told me about a mechanic working out of his home garage that I would never go to. My friend bout his 91 goldwing brand new. It now has close to 100,000 miles on it and he said he noticed the speedometer acting weird. Well he had heard of this guy working on bikes and decided to save a few bucks and have him do the work. After he had the bike for less than a day he called to say that a gear needed replaced and he had to order. Well my friend was OK with that. After another week with no news he decided to go to his place and see what was happening with his bike. Well it was snowing/sleeting when he got there. The guy was nowhere to be found and his goldwing was leaned up against the back of his garage with the keys in the ignition. This bike has been extremely well cared for and my friend was flat PO'ed. Three days later he got ahold of him and he tried to say that he did not know that it was not covered or about the keys in it. Well AJ's bike repair in Columbus Junction IA will not be seeing anything from me or my friends. So if you need some work on your bike, do not take it there. And he never did repair the speedometer. I just wanted to let the rest of you know that I got a set (3 keys) from one of the members on this site [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/member.php?u=628]VentureRider.Org[/ame] and he did a great job. My dealer was out of these keys and I live in a fairly small town...so the service Ken provided was great (and fast). All I had to do was provide my key code and he done the rest. Here's a link to his (KJ4V) profile, and he is a locksmith so you know they are done right. [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/member.php?u=628]VentureRider.Org[/ame] Ken...tried all 3 keys...worked perfectly. Thanks again. Wally

Hello Everyone,, I had to cancel my trip out to Florida caverns due to an Emergency Service Call Saturday morning. Work. Most of my Vacation time this year was used to work for other people or Repairs/ Improvements on my Property. So the week of T-Giving I am off with NO Service call responsibility. I have lived in Florida for 20 years and have never made it to the Florida Keys. I am considering taking a senic ride through middle of Florida/backroads to the Keys. Maybe leave on Monday ride back on Wedesday, if I can find real cheap places to snooze, shower, etc... Anyone Else planning a ride or is everyone just talking about riding. LOL Anyone else want to head south? Does anyone have a suggestion of cheap/good place to stay in Key Largo, $50-70 per night.? Camping Cabin, RV Rental, B&B, etc..... Any Opinions welcome. LAter Vern

Friday after all the Back To The Bricks festivities I rolled in about 1:30am. Pulled under the awning and when I went to take the keys out, the key kind of grabbed. Grabbed enough to slip out of my fingers but not enough to keep them from coming out of the ignition. Yep, fell right into the fairing. Since the key to the house is on the key ring I took the spare key out of my wallet to get into the house. NO the spare key worked in the door knob but for some reason would not work in the dead bolt. All the house windows are locked because running the A/C, flash light in the saddle bag but no key to unlock it. Saw the neighbors light still on so I knocked on his door to borrow a flash light. (of course he had a Lady friend over) Got the flash light and was able to see the keys. Got my hand squeezed down there (motor still HOT) just touched the keys and down farther they fell. Found them again and ripped and burned half the skin off my arm getting to them. Once again as soon I touched them away they went again. Could see no sign of them now. About that time it's almost 3:00am, was going to climb in the van and sleep until morning. Van keys in the house. Noticed a car leave the neighbors and then my neighbor walked over to see if he could help. He got tools and we started taking things apart. Found the keys wedged between the fan and the radiator. Finally got into the house at 4:15am. Now I have enough (working) keys in my wallet to get into everything I own. At least this didn't cost me a bunch of money like everything else that has happened in the past 4 weeks.

I was going through the treads this morning and ran across the one where Ky,Rider lost his keys at a rest stop. Uturn posted some blank codes. So I decided I better do it right now or I'll be one stuck somewhere. So I took the codes with me and went down and a couple keys made (only cost me $4.00 a key) so all I have to do is hide one on the bike and I'll be set. Thanks guys for jarring my brain. One less thing I have to worry about.

I went to the Dealer today and was going to go ahead and get a couple of keys made. I had one of my own blanks to be used for a custom key, but thought I would get a couple of more keys cut...YEOW. When the guy at the counter told me the price of the OEM key...$45.60. DANGGGGG The guy did tell me they had some plain blanks they sell, but those were backordered right now... So be careful with that OEM Key...thars gold in that thar key. Wally

What are some of the LITTLE things you have added to your bike that most people might not have thought of...either ornamental or practical? For example, I have the License plate grifter plate: http://www.bikesax.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ACCGRIFT01&Category_Code=ACC-ESS This little gem locks and can keep your paper work...extra keys, a small flash light, fuses...and best of all, it locks. It is not really stealth...but you do need to know what you are looking for. Anyone else? Wally

Me and my better half decided this summer that it was time for her to learn how to ride. I kept an eye out for something small and not in the best of shape in case she was to drop it. So... I just brought home an 81 Suzuki GS550L yesterday. It's actually in pretty good shape considering it has been sitting outside at my Dad's for the last few years. It belonged to my cousin who has been waiting for my brother to fix it. Neither ever had much success keeping it running. There were no keys to be found anywhere so I went to the locksmith with the ignition today to have a set of keys made using the code on the housing. I hooked a battery up to it, turned the key and everything lit up like it should. When I hit the start switch and nothing happened. When I pulled off the cover on the right side to try and track down why it wouldn't turn over, I noticed some wires that had been cut. As far as I can tell, someone swiped the rectifier. They didn't even bother unplugging it. They just snipped all the wires in one clean cut. For some reason, my brother comes to mind. First question, would cutting those wires make it not turn over when the start button is pressed? I've had other bikes and they would still at least turn over without a rectifier. Second question, what other years and models used the same rectifier? I'd be able to increase my odds of getting one if I knew. Third question, anybody here have an extra one laying around? Fourth and last question, would any of you know if there is a manual somewhere online that I can download? Thanks, Bill

Look what I found in my driveway last night when I got home. I'll let you guess the year. Really nice shape, maybe it's a gift,,,,, but I can't find the keys. Buddy thinks it's alright as well.

Freebird, What would the shipping cost be for the three oval decals AND a lanyard?? I have been wondering (careful, brain is in gear!) what would happen if I dropped my keys in the process of getting on and off my bike--which is a major event now! The thought of going through all the effort to get on, only to drop my keys, fills me with dread!! But I think the lanyard might be the answer, and why not have a VR one So let me know and I will pay for them all together.

Did the first gens have different keys for the ignition than for the luggage and such? My ignition switch was so hosed up that I bought a replacement from ebay dirt cheap, and I was going to change the tumblers out to use the same ignition key. To my dismay, the ignition key from the replacement switch is a different blank than the one on the bike. When I examined the one on the bike, the key that was supposedly for the ignition was not right either. The inside of the ignition switch had been worn out enough that it would turn if wiggled right. This leads me to believe the key that came with the bike is not the right one. If they originally had two keys, I am ok with that, but i am darn picky and would like them all keyed alike if that is how they rolled off the assembly line.

Sheila and I are planning a trip to south Florida at the end of June already have reservations at the Beachcomber in Pompano Beach from 6-24 thru 7-1. We will be trailering the bike and thinking about a trip to the Keys on the bike, just wondering if any members in the S. Fl. area would be interested in making a ride to the Keys between those dates. If any takers just P.M. me so we can make arangments to meet and ride and eat lunch and ride some more. Joel

Two friends and I abandoned Northern Indiana last Thursday, trailered bikes down to warmer climate, and rode over 1000 miles including the Keys. Great warm weather, and it was good to get back in the saddle, if even for just a few days. Can't wait for the Indiana weather to get through raining, snowing and start acting like it cares about letting us get back on the road again.
