I plan on installing an aftermarket stereo. Looking for a how to for wiring it. My factory radio/cassette work fine, but only one speaker works and just doesn't have the sound quality I would like. I saw a 4x6 speaker install that I also plan on copying. My bike came with a blank that goes in place of the stereo which I plan on installing an aftermarket head unit in place of the stocker that I remove.

I just completed a 600 mile jaunt around the northern lower peninsula of Michigan on my 83 first gen and was pleasantly surprised by the mileage. 51.25 average on the whole 600!!! This is the best I've had since installing new diaphragms and Skydoc's needle shim kit earlier this year. Anybody else getting this kind of mileage?

Does anyone know if the " silver bucket" inside the headlight assembly comes out ...im installing a "led" headlight from "trucklite"???????????

...got around to installing skydoc's clutch upgrade today. What a day I picked...it's 6:45 p.m. and the temp is still 93 F. I just had supper then went out to finish what has to be the most difficult, complex and frustrating part of this job ... getting the old gasket off the case. Naturally, it wouldn't stick to the cover, so out came the utility knife blade and away I went scraping! I needed a break to cool down (It's more than 93 in my garage - oh to be rich and have an air conditioned garage!) so I just stopped for a few minutes. I heard that the Yamaha gasket has a built-in sealant but this is ridiculous! I even had to trim the silicone-like sealant off the edge in a couple of spots! Oh well, it should take no more than 15 or 20 minutes to finish the job now that the gasket is gone. The urge to use that nice, easy to remove Loctite from-a-gasket was strong (a lot easier to remove), but heck, I've got the new gasket now anyway. The nice article with pictures in the tech library made the job go very smoothly, although finding that little wire holding the last disc was a bit tricky. I'm looking forward to trying out the bike. Interesting note here: I knew that the discs should be covered in oil before installation, so I checked out the recommendations from several sources. Here"s what I got - 1) no need for any oil as they'll get covered when the bike is started (Hopefully they won't overheat and burn out first!); 2) Coat with oil before installing; 3) Soak for 10 to 15 minutes before installing; 4) Soak for 2 hours before installing, and finally 5) Soak overnight before installing. Personally, I was taking no chances and had the plates soaking in oil since yesterday. Andy

Hello Folks, Ive been a member here for a little over a year,just lurking in the background,I guess its time to come out of the closet, as I am stumped. I have a 1987 Venture Royal with almost 80k. The swingarm is completely apart for general maintenance and a tire change. When I reassembled the swingarm I noticed about 1/8 inch free play from side to side, Im using the workshop manual to limit my mistakes, I have all of the right parts, and everything is torqued per the book. So assembly is not the problem, I think. I put it together and took it apart 3 times, and it still has side play,(yes I know what Einstein said about doing the same thing over and over,and expecting different results). According to the book sideplay is eliminated by installing new tapered roller bearings and collars,but the ones I have now look and feel like new, what am I missing? I cannot find anything wrong. I was thinking of equal shims on both sides, but I dont think that is the answer. Did anyone ever run into something like this, any suggestions will be welcomed.

Hello from Vancouver, Canada: Just a little over a year ago, I purchased a gauge set from Ponch (tach, oil pressure and water temp) for my ’07 Venture. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I didn’t start installing the set until just this week. With the dash now apart - and cut, I've run into a snag which I hope someone can help me fix. Specifically, I have the Clarion CD Changer installed on my bike. As part of its installation, the multi-pin connector was inserted into the green-tagged cable on the Cassette deck. With the Cassette now "toast", where do I plug the CD connector? Is the grey-tagged cable which used to link the deck to the radio? I'm hoping that's the answer. Another challenge: my old Craftsman 7.2 v drill is too large to fit between the bottom of the upper fairing frame and the inner fairing wall (re drilling new holes in the former cassette frame and gauge set brackets). What size of drill is recommended? Would a new 18v or 20v cordless unit be of sufficient slim profile to do the trick? How about a Dremel tool? And last but not least: Since a water temp gauge is part of my cluster, is it best to wrap the capillary water tube in layer of thin insulation since its bound to get hot? If yes, what material is recommended? That's everything. My thanks, in advance, to any and all who can answer these questions and help me get my RSV back on the road. Does anyone recognize what brand this hitch may be? Anyone know where I might find a replacement lens for the flap light and some install instructions? It came off a 88 VR and I am installing on my 90 VR. These pictures were taken by the previous owner.

ok i have an old dell e510 it has 512 mb of ram yeah i know thats and old computer well it can be up dated to 4gb of ram. well i went on to flebay and got me 2 gb of ram. 1 stick each of 1 gb. after installing these things. the darn computer just went beep beep beep. and would not boot up? so take it apart again remove this ram place back the old ones and bam shes running again. after a carefull look they sent me what looks like a HP ram? now im no computer whiz but im pretty sure that wont work. after sending a request to the store on flebay they said its a generic one and they never had problems with this ram working before in my type of dell? and made a nasty remark that they left positive on my report. but if they get a negitive from me they will not exchange this. so looks like im out $24 bucks. unless im installing it wrong.

I've finally got around to installing a Stebel horn...and have a question about the air intake. I understand the logic behind installing the hose to provide "clean/clear" air to to the compressor. Since I've mounted the horn in the factory default horn location using Carbon_Ones mounting bracket, and the air intake clips into the horn is downward facing, couldn't I cut a small piece of a "horse hair" AC filter and insert that into the air intake opening, thereby eliminating the black plastic fitting and the unsightly hose option??? Seems like that would be an easy solution? Thoughts?

OK so I'm a slow learner. I think the attached pictures answers my question but I want to make sure. These pictures come from Bkuhr's pictorial of doing progressives. Am I correct in saying that when installing progressive springs... instead of re-inserting ALL the stock parts, all I need is the spring washer (#4) between the new spring and the PVC spacer (which has been cut to 1") and the cap (#2) and finally the cap bolt (#1) I no longer need the spacer(#3). Have I got that right?

I noticed on this site that alot of folks replace their own tires. My other bike, kaw/ 1500 needs new tires and want to replace front and rear in the next few weeks. I'm mechaniclly inclined ,wrenched on cars for over twenty years and have the tools to do so. My question is, being that these tires are tube type is there anything I need to do as far as installing new tubes, such as not getting them pinched ect. and was told to use babay power to help in the installation. I plan on removing the wheels myself and removing and installing the tubes and tires. I have done car tires in the past, but all were tubeless. I guess my main concern is can I do this myself, or just remove the wheels and take them to the dealer or a tire shop and have them do the tires? Also a concern is the safety factor, never done this before and with only two wheels under me I don't want any issues. I will be purchasing a m/c jack in the next few days to do this, and recommendatios? Sorry for so many questions, but any suggestions would help me decide, your thoughts? Thanks in advance...

Modifying my Harbor Freight (HF) trailer to haul the Rsv to the Cody rally. I have been using it to haul my Seadoo RXP back and forth to the river since 2005 and at 900 lb. its never been a problem. Made a rack for it that is bolted to the top of the trailer. Attempted to put the axle above the springs but changed my mind when i saw a place on the frame that had the paint knocked off due to a hard hit(pothole). So I put axle back under springs. Was worth while as i tore everything apart cleaned and repacked wheel bearings and used marine grade grease. The mods made are: 1. Installing pressure treated 2x4 cut down "in" the last rear portion of the frame 2. 1 piece of 3/4" pressure treated plywood.(OVER EXISTING 1/16 DIAMOND steel) ** 1&2 were done as i worried about all of the pressure the wheels would put at just one point on trialer ** 3. Getting rid of the old ratching winch and replacing with a HF remote control 3000 lb. electric winch with a marine battery and box. 4. Installing a motorcycle front wheel chock from HF. 5. Installing a spare tire holder from HF. 6. need to find a +5 rise 1 1/4" hitch bar so the Toyota Corolla 11" top of receiver will yeild a level trailer 16" at tongue.

The plug that one would plug the headset in located on the gas tank is waring out from being connected so many times. Babbits wants $50 some bucks for it and the Yama dealer wants $80. Anyone now of repairing or installing a new 5 pin socket or a less expensive place to buy the part, J& M would need a part # which it don't have. Any suggestions?

sorry , I've not been on lately , but I have a new job , I am working for Ken at Trick Lights , installing LED lites on bikes . We did the daytona bike week and saw Ruffy , Jricherd and Crazy Larry , than did the San Antonio expo , now getting ready for Bandara . Its very hard to get on site with Andriod , I am going to try Tap a talk ? anybody know off a better app. ? Trick Lights is a lot more fun than working on RVs , I get to work on other riders bikes installing LEDs lites , LED headlites and Custom Sound amps and speakers and I get to go to all the m/c shows ! I unloaded the 1st Gen when we got to daytona and used 4 gal of gas in 78 miles , Ouch !! but on a side note there is a lot of Hardlys than don't like me LOL Sorry Doodle I missed your MD but had to work

I just installed the subject trailer hitch and it installed in just one hour. It was a perfect fit and so easy to install. I did not even have to remove the saddlebags to perform the removal of the support arm and then installing the trailer hitch. It is recommended that one remove the saddlebags to prevent scratching the bags accidently when removing and installing the bolts. Being very careful, it really easy to install without removing the saddlebag which really cuts down on the time for installing of the trailer hitch. The service was great with no shipping or taxes. $150.00 covered it all. A special thanks to MarkVentures for the service and an excellent part. It fit like a glove, little to no effort and installed in "one hour". Would highly recommend this hitch for anyone riding a Venture. DanC

Last November I picked up a 1984 Goldwing luggage rack for my VR. It had the right mounting locations and dimensions for my large top box, and it looked to be in pretty good condition. Today I finally got around to installing it and I have attached a pdf file with pictures. Please look it over and comment Thanks! GaryZ

What are my options for installing a sissy bar rack on my 05.... Just buy the yamaha rack and be done with it or are their other after market racks available..?? Regards to all.

I am going to be installing my new trunk spoiler / wing light very shortly. Are there any watchouts or hints to make the installation easier? The instructions are not stellar, and it is not really clear how to make the marking strips that are included stay with the wing while positioning it on the trunk. I would like to hear how you installed yours...

I wanted to share this with you DIY guys out there. I bought this valve spring tool at a local tool discount store. It is too large for removing my VR valve keepers and I had to use the old stand-by . . . a deep socket and rubber hammer. However, it worked great for installing the valve springs. To hold the valve closed I placed a rubber sanding block under the head and in the dome. I then stacked the valve springs and top plate, set the keepers in position, and pressed the tool down on the top of the valve stem. The tool has a spring loaded pin that helps guide the keepers into position. It took a little muscle to press down, but, it worked!
