The wife and I are headed for San Antonio in March for a couple days and then to the Texas Hill country for 3/4 days for some riding then over to Austin for a couple days. Any suggestions of things to see and do in Austin and must roads to ride in the Hill Country area? Have friends in San Anton to help there. Thanks Rick & Shirley

Just hop on anywhere and take a ride, out to Lancaster, towards Hershey, take a detour through the towns along the way (find the Windmill - go up the big Hill, great ride!). There are some really great roads in PA - time to post 'em! gp

Took me awhile to work up the courage to sell my 89 VR. This was my first true touring bike and I have throughly enjoyed it. I am looking for something a little smaller, possibly a FJR so I can do some canyon carving here in the Texas Hill Country. If interested in my VR check out the classifieds and inputs on what my next bike should be are welcome as well.

Well we made it to Arkansas dodging rain, hail, and tornado's on the way down last weekend. We arrived to our cabin to find out that the owner had no idea what a touring motorcycle was. Our cabin was straight up the side of the hill. It was wet and we were pulling trailers. Very challenging to get there and I emailed them and told them to tell others that it was not safe for bikes. Other than that we had a great time and the cabin was wonderful and secluded. We rode about 1500 miles around Arkansas and enjoyed every road we were on (except the cabin hill climb). Weather was wonderful and sunny. Left Marshall Arkansas Saturday morning around 9:30 am and arrived home at 9:30 pm. It was a long day, rode a little over 600 miles and it was cold later in the day. I couldn't wait any longer . It was 83 degrees here in New york State and my son and I headed over to Wyoming County to pick up my new to me 1986 Black and Gold Venture Royale! The bike has hardly been ridden in the last 3 years. It sat in the last owners basement gathering a lot of dust. and in a garage before that. He got it stuck trying to get it out of the house and it had a lot of mud on it. We headed down the hill from his home(dirt road to boot) and the first thing I discover is air in the combined front rear break lines. Pumping the pedal got me some response but the front brake and engine breaking got me home the 68 miles back to my house. Twenty miles out I notice the temp gauge not registering. then it did, then it didn't . Obviously a lose connection but oddly down hill got a response so a total fluid check starts tomorrow' But what a beauty even under all that dirt. Got to some open highway to open her up. the spirit was willing but the battery, air cleaner cover wasn't bolted back on and over 80 threatened to blow off. On top of that she didn't seem ready to hold an idle no matter how fast or how far we went. So a few dibbles of sea foam with a couple of tank fulls. flush the radiator. Check wiring, bolt down that cover and then its cleaning, waxing and rubbing to make her glisten! Here's what she looked like after getting her home. I'll post the after pictures when she is done. But except for these little things. She's a gem ! Did a mention( a thousand times) that This is my favorite color!!!:dancefool:

Just thought I'd try a Hail Mary here -who knows when you might connect - We have been looking for the perfect retirement home/property in the Texas Hill Country for the past year - found lots of interesting places, but nothing just right yet. Want 10+ acres for privacy and hunting, plus a decent home Privacy and seclusion a must, live water a HUGE plus. Willing to buy separate hunting property if we find the right home site on too small acreage Our favorite areas are Bandera, Wimberly, and Llano, but anywhere in the Hill Country is possible. On the very slight chance anyone out there has a lead on Hill Country property, give me a shout! Goose

Do yourself a favor... If you have 2 bars showing, your in the fuel countdown mode, and, your approaching a steep hill with cagers on your six... switch to reserve immediately... I found this out on my way to MD today... luckily the cagers weren't riding my six... took a half a mile going up hill for the reserve to kick in... food for thought... On the flat you can run without flipping to reserve well below one bar...

My friend and I are planning on possibly riding to the Veterans Memorial Wall (Arlington,Va.), and I have never been. Just wondering if anyone else has made these plans here in our general neighboring states or in our area. We would be leaving here, Olive Hill, Ky. on Friday, May 27 at 2:00 pm to ride to Arlington,Va. From here it is about 7 hrs none stop. We would like to take our time and be there for the Sunday morning trip to the wall, then start back for home that evening. Must be back home on Monday, May 30 th by 12:00 noon. Would love to meet up with some of you folks if you have made plans to go. I told my friend JD, that I would check to see if any of you all are going/or making plans before we make any final decisions. I have looked at RFTW site and information. But I think we are a little to late to get any of the discounts and so on. I feel like we would maybe be intruding on a good thing by not making plans in advance. We decided that we would become members next year and try and meet up with them. Their deadline for hotels and so forth was in April. This would be a nice annual event if someone would like to take on the responsibility of such a plan. Or maybe someone has. I did a search and came up with nothing. I think it is really good to honor those/and their family, who have paid such a great debt for our freedom. James Darrell Fultz 437 Reeves Branch Olive Hill, Ky. 41164 (606) 356-7797

OK...so we've seen the video of the 19 year old going airborne in his Trans Am. There were several comments something like "hey...we've all done stupid things and been lucky enough to live and tell about it" So...now here's the chance to tell about it! Mine was pretty simple...but its the one that sticks in mind the most (yes there were others!) I was riding TOO FAST on one stretch of winding up hill road (Albion Rd. for you folks who know Hamilton, ON) The last corner was a tight right and I just couldn't get it to go around the corner. I drifted into the oncoming lane just as I was cresting the hill. It was steep enough I couldn't see over it and it is only blind chance that I didn't become a hood ornament on some car! I still get shivers when I think about what might have been. So Whats yours??? I'm thinking this might lead to a LONG thread

I have a question. I brought a 2000 venture mm and i was wondering if the speedometer is suppose to move like a speedometer in a car because mines sticks as I am accelerating and then when I let off the throttle it jumps to the speed I am going. The cruise control also wont stay engaged if the speed drops going up hill. I need to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and how they resolved it. Thanks for the help in advance.

Took a ride yesterday as it was about 62º. Just riding along down the four lane, which has a 65mph speed limit, which was about what I was going and came upon a pickup running a little slower. I checked my mirror and moved over into the left lane. I then realize there was one of the mid 90's black Impala SS' coming up to me at a good clip. Rather than kick it down a gear or two, I just cranked it on in 5th. As I accelerated past the truck, I moved over in the right lane and run up to about 85mph. The Impala had caught me and was moving past me and I was real tempted to drop down to 4th and run it up some, but I just let it go. By this time we were going up an incline, so i just let the bike slow back to 65mph and let the car go on as he was getting faster. Just before I crested the hill, my radar detector went off. As I crested the hill, there was a Deputy diving into the median to make a u-turn. I had come upon a large truck in the right lane going about 55mph and decided to slow down and see what the Deputy was going to do. He soon came flying past me accelerating as much as that Crown Vic would do. As soon as he passed me, I swung over behind him to see if the Impala was still in site. From that point on the highway, which is straight, it was at least a mile before it crested another hill. That Impala was getting ready to start up the hill. As I drove for the next three miles, with going over several hills and passing several roads that went into oblivion in just a short distance, I figured the Impala had got away. Then I crested a hill and there was the Deputy with lights flashing and a black Impala SS. I moved over into the left lane and gave them the old air horn toot and a wave as I passed. It did iritate me how quickly he came up on me and wondered how hard he would have had to brake if I had not accelerated as hard as I did to get out of his way. That is one time I was just glad I used good sense because my bike really likes this cool air and was running great. As I came back that way later, I tried to keep an eye out for the Deputy as I would love to have known what he clocked him at, as it had to be well over 100mph. RandyA

You may have seen some TV coverage a couple of weeks ago of a massive dust storm that swept across Australia and turned Sydney a deep red colour. This is a shot a mate sent me of the storm front as it passed through Broken Hill. Broken Hill is in the very west of my State and close to the 'epicentre' of the storm where it originated in central South Australia. The last I heard the dust was settling on the north island of New Zealand.

Woke up this morning at 5am and no one in the house wanted to talk to me, logged into my favourite site to read a few post. I landed on the Embarrassing Moments Had a good laugh reading all the mishaps people owned up to. Well here goes. 1st drop: I was 16 yrs old and my first bike was a Honda 400 I woke to find the bike on its side. I took it out to early in the spring and the kick stand sunk in the mud during the night. 2nd drop: I was 17 yrs old pulled into the place were I worked in a big hurry to get my pay check. Jumped off the bike and ran in the front door, realising what I did turned to see her falling over because I forgot to put the kick stand down. 1st crash I was 18 yrs stupid. It’s been 28 yrs since I have laid one down (brand new Honda 500 Custom). Young and fearless I would play on a hill going to my friend’s house. I would come over the top of a hill and start down the hill, half way down the hill the pipeline crossed the road creating a jump. The hill bottomed out and the grade changed to up hill again. My friend lived at the end of the road, 90 degree turn left into his yard. The road ended at his driveway and the Canadian white pine forest started. Done right: Hit the jump at 50 m/hr and catch some air, apply full breaks to make the left turn. Not a lot of room for error. Done wrong: Hit the jump at 50 m/hr and catch some air, and have the throttle stuck wide open…… apply full breaks with the motor screaming. I was able to hit the kill button turn the bike sideways and skidded into the pine forest. The bike hit a small tree stood up and rested on the tree in an upright position. (Unbelievably not a scratch on the bike). I was thrown from the bike when it suddenly stopped, I hit a tree or two, and laid in a ball, I was not seriously hurt, no broken bones, scratches and pride. My friends dad was outside in the driveway and watched the entire show and came to my aid. This was the day I learnt to respect the bikes. Stupid Stupid Stupid I have not laid one down since then. I have ridden with a number of new riders since then and always tell them, you will drop it, you will fix it and if no one is around no one will know if you can keep from telling some one. Just don’t be stupid.

Will try my best to describe so you get a good picture in your mind... Last eve was on the way home at Sun Set and Peak Deer time. I had my XXL Clearview Windshield and my Clear Safety Glasses and my visor was full up. Had Mimi on the back too. North West Michigan rural Highway M-37. I was scanning left and right 10 to 12 seconds (Max headlight range) like a mad man. Seen 5 deer next too road (3 did not move, 1 went back to woods and 1 crossed 10 to 12 seconds in front). Then climbing a large and long hill I was 10 seconds behind a Toyota ForeRunner he was using High Beams and I was in the left 1/3 of my lane (near the yellow line) using Low Beam. Me and the Forerunner had been like this for the last 15 or 20 miles (best for the situation). Mimi and I have a "Deer Spotting Contest" DEER Right, Deer or Left Deer Front commands through our intercom. OK back to the large and long hill. There is a campground at bottom of hill on leftside and over the hill about 2 miles is a Party Store / Gas Station. Just as we got to the top of the hill I say "Deer Left" in the next 1 to 3 seconds I realize there are 4 "DEER EYES" bobbing up and down.... Wrong... I then recognize them 'bobbing deer eyes" as Bicycle Pedal Reflectors from two bicycles. They were on the farthest left shoulder of the road going head on to on coming traffic (good), but then I see them weaving badly into the oncoming lane maybe 1/3 into that lane. Remembering when I was a kid peddling to the top of a big and long hill I was tired, out of breath and wobbly too... OK so far recognized and analyzed the situation at hand... Then headlights started from the other side of the hill (Thinking to myself they better get that wobbling under control soon).... Just as the Toyota Forerunner in front of me passed them one of the kids decided he was going to avoid the oncoming car in his lane by cutting across the street (now 5 to 6 seconds out)!!! I PRESSED Hard Right to get too the White Line and the kid is still coming across his front tire is now at the double yellow line. By time I get TUNNEL VISION and ON THE WHITE LINE and steady I started emergency braking procedure (My arms strained as me and now Mimi full weight was upon the handle bars). Realizing I was fully upright and not skidding when I was braking and under control I then forceably broke eye contact with white line to see where the Bicycle was now? In the corner of my left eye I see his Back Tire breaking the reflective double yellow lines and briefly seen his handle bars cranked hard left about 18 to 24" off my left handle bar!!! WE MADE IT. 1. Thank God 2. Thanks to my MSF.Org Training Classes (Basic and Advanced 2008). 3. Lucky

I'm back home now in Atlanta safe and sound after riding into the remnants of hurricane Faye's rain from Birmingham all the way to Atlanta. The last part of the trip I was trying to complete the Saddlesore 1000 from Amarillo to Atlanta. Which I will cover under a different post. But, I still needed to finish telling y'all the rest of the New Mexico portion of the trip which be covered in three parts. This part being # 2 which will cover from the Cimarron Canyon to Las Vegas, NM. Which was one of the most interesting parts of the trip. Leaving the Cimarron Canyon I reach a place called Eagles Nest. Where Eagles Nest Lake is. Supposedly the best Trout fishing in New Mexico but I'll never know because my fishing pole blew off the trailer somewhere in Tennessee. But I know it sure was windy all the way to Angel Fire. NM where I toured the National Vietnam War Memorial. I spent some time there and was sincerely moved by the exhibits and the movie presentation of the Vietnam Years both in country and stateside. Vietnam was the war of my generation and the images depicted brought back quite a few poignant memories. After Angel Fire as I'm entering Taos, NM I stop to check the map. While stopped I decide to answer Nature's call so I step off the road and into the woods and walk down this incline about 15 yards where I reach this creek culvert where I stand to add to the water flow of the creek. As I'm finishing up I look over to my left, and notice something strange down in the creek. It appeared to be some bones sticking out from under some clothing. The clothing appeared to be some sort of jacket. Now if it were just bones I would just assume it was some deer or animal carcuss but since it looked liked it was wearing clothes and I had never seen any wild animals wearing clothes in this sort of setting my next guess was that it was the bones of a person not an animal. Not knowing exactly what to do at that point, I decided that I probably should not get any closer to it so that I don't get totally grossed out or disrupt a crime scene should it be one. So I take a picture of it and climb back up the hill and get on my bike and ride on into town. As it turns out I find a New Mexico State Police office about two miles down the road so I stop to make sure I can ride off with my conscience being clear. So I pull in to report it. One of the Officers followed me back up the road to where I had pulled off and I lead him down the hill to the exact spot on the culvert where I first saw the bones. He evidently saw the same thing that I had seen because he immediatly gets on the radio and calls for a Supervisor and back up. While I was wondering why he needed back-up I slowly backed-up the hill. Turned out he needed a Supervisor to make a decision on what to do next and back-up for a third opinion on if it was a crime scene or not.So by the time the third, fourth and fifth cop car showed up and all of the officers had a chance to walk down the hill and stand where I first stood. They all had decided that it was very suspicious and maybe they should call for the criminal investigators to come secure the scene. It was at that point that they politely asked me if I wouldn't mind waiting to tell the criminal investigators How I happened to stumble over this exact spot all the way from Georgia by way of South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, and Colorado to this exact spot in New Mexico. One of them did suggest in somewhat of a joking way, I wasn't laughing, that they did have handcuffs and I could be REQUIRED to sit in the back of one of the cop cars until the investigators arrived. Seeing the futility of refusing their invitation I graciously accepted. I did however agree to sit in the back seat of one of the cars when it started raining only under the conditions that they would leave the door open and I could leave one leg out with one foot on the ground. I stayed there only as long as it rained and used the excuse that I wanted to take a picture of the double rainbow as a ploy to escape from the car. So five hours later after everyone arrived and stood on the spot on the culvert and then the ones dressed in suits got to get down in the water a drag it out of the water since they were they ones that got paid the big bucks to do that sort of thing. I was set free to go my merry way. I could have stayed there and camped out but some of the officers had been talking about the big mountain lion that had been seen in the area and if this could possibly be a cougar kill. That seemed somewhat unlikely to me since by now they all had agree that the clothing I first saw now appearred to be a large sack tied up with rope. But, to be on the safe side I opted to ride off into the night and find a safe motel well away from any wild animal danger. Which I did some hours later in Las Vegas, NM.

If you are heading to the Texas Hill Country, you might want to consider the Whitten Inn in Kerrville for a place to stay - couldn't get more biker friendly than this place! Their normal rack rate for a double is $80, but if you are on a motorcycle, the rate is $60. And if you are smart enough to stop at any Texas visitor center first and look in the travel coupon book, you just might find a coupon for them at $50! When you check in, they give you a free beer, and they have a bike wash station and wipe-down rags available. The rooms do show some wear, but they are clean and in reasonable repair. The rest of the place looks pretty decent too. Goose

My son and I recently got back from a ride in the Texas Hill Country. We visited Fredericksburg, Leakey Luckenbach and Bandera. We rode the Three Sisters ( FM 335, 336, 337). We also made a stop at the Texas famous, Garven Store. It switched from rain to shine on all three days but we got some good riding time. This is the first ride we have got to do together since he came back from Iraq. Here are a few pictures from the trip. Moakster
