My better half wants to see Gulf Shores, AL and New Orleans the 3rd week of January. I see their average high is 62 that time of year which is fine compared to what we'll have here in Wisconsin! What suggestions does anybody have for scenic rides, good eats etc in these two regions?

Ok, so while we are no strangers to wind in Oklahoma (although not the tumbleweed state some people think) we regularly get several days of constant 45-50 mph gust (like today), swirling, from sides, head on, tail wind, you name it. How do you take on these winds? slow down? lay down? Speed up? I know there are hundreds of thousands of miles logged by riders on this site. And while I know you all can't have the tainted "texas" winds from the Gulf we get here, what is your method? I have mine, but am eager to learn........ lets hear it! p.s. I dont care if you ride a "first Gen" and they cut the wind like a knife.....:whistling:: :stirthepot:

We have spent this week at Gulf Shores State Park in Gulf Shores Alabama. What a beautiful spot. Road the bike to Dauphin Island and along the coast to Pass Christian Mississippi today. Lot of evidence of the hurricane damage but everything is getting cleaned up nicely, at least along the coast where we were today. The weather has been fantastic all week. Heading for New Orleans on Monday.

Got home in the middle of the night. Got in my Bed and slept real late!! Done had Brown Sugar fired up this morning and she sounds ready to go somewhere. Don't want to see a beach for a while. Longest real Vacation I've taken in a long long time. Just went with no real plans, saw a lot of sand & water. Next time I will head straight for the Gulf!!! Beaches on West side of Flordia a lot nicer. Only made it back up as far as ClearWater. On up the coast of the Gulf might be interesting??Next time.

Went down the East coast to the bottom of Flordia. Didn't do the Keys it was raining hard that day so I just went across the Everglades. Then went back up the West Coast as far as Clearwater. Now in Folkston Georgia at son's. Going to stop and watch WVU whip Maryland tomorrow and then head on home. Got burnt a few times stay in some good motels and some not so good but great trip and Warden claims she is tired of Beaches!! I liked the Gulf the best. And those girls down there are going to need some clothes if it gets cold... Ruffy I ment to call you but forgot info and haven' been close to puter since I left.

Well the higher powers at BP are cutting costs now. A whole bunch of good folks got laid off....most of them were in the wildlife recovery category. No effort is being spared by BP to reclaim the oil from the Gulf....and make money from that. Boomer....who's more than a little disgusted about the situation.

Yesterday I saw with my own eyes the disaster that has befallen the Gulf....and its direct impact upon my home State and the Cajuns who inhabit this area. I don't cry easily but I shed tears when I saw the devastation in the bayous, beautiful wild birds oil-coated and unable to fly....and the great number of those who simply died in a struggle for life. Our Base Camp is in Hopedale,La. There are several thousand people working there to clean the oil booms and get that black crud out of the bayous. Throughout the long day I saw no one goofing off....everyone is going at this cleanup with a fury of human effort. We are busy transporting oil-slicked birds to Ft. Jackson in Venice-La which is 60 miles away from Hopedale. At Ft. Jackson folks there are working 24/7 to clean and save the birds and any other wildlife that is brought in. My Company has 28 specially-equipped vehicles for transporting the wildlife. We are working hand-in-hand with La. Wildlife and Fish to save as much of the wildlife as humanly possible......and we roll 24/7 in this endeavor. Yesterday I had a chance to talk to some of the local Cajuns whose lives have been turned upside down by this disaster. There is not much hope but there is a burning resolve to do what they can to save whatever is possible in this beautiful land that they have called Home for generations. Boomer.....driving hard down here....and to hell with getting a lot of sleep.

Mineral Managment Service has suspended US drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Hopefully this will not last too long. 77 rigs under contract right now in the GOM. another 46 not on contract as of this week. They are going to allow work over of the current wells. Also other countries not under MMS control can continue... If this last very long it could mean around 15,000 or more folks will be layed off. This could very easily cause spikes in Oil prices and we could see it at the pumps... No word on when it will be lifted. BTW...not trying to start an argument about whether they should or should not drill in the gulf after the on going disaster...just wanted to let you good folks know what is going on if you see a spike in prices.
