You posted in one of my threads earlier this spring that rainy days are for getting to know my bike. At first as I listened to the tapping of raindrops on the garage roof I thought that you were right on the money. BUT...now that I have put the bike together from a truckload of parts, rebuilt and flushed the front brakes, done the starter upgrade, changed the o-ring in the coolant valve, flushed the clutch fluid, changed the clutch springs, greased the swingarm, upgraded the headlight and painted the bezel, changed the right side controls, put in a new battery, greased the speedo bearing and lubed the cable, lubed the throttle cables, changed and upgraded the shift pin assembly, changed all the side cover gaskets, added an aftermarket stereo and rear speakers, and...and...DARNIT I JUST WANT TO GO RIDING, MAKE IT STOP RAINING ALREADY, I KNOW THIS THING AS WELL AS I NEED TO FOR NOW...:depressed:

I ordered new tires yesterday and I should have them tomorrow. It's been a long slow process but I've just about got the old girl ready to go. I drained the final drive last night. From the looks of the oil, I don't think it's ever been changed. Is there anything special I need to do with the final drive while I have the rear wheel off? It seems like I remember reading something about greasing it or something. There is a grease fitting but I'm not sure if this is the only place that needs to be greased.

Pulled rear tire off my 05 RSTD for new. Greased the splines and pulled the drive shaft for greasing. Reinstalled in reverse order and now just getting clicking when rolled. Won't move under power. What did I do wrong (1st genners leave this one alone about biggest mistake is buying a 2nd gen)

Due to my work schedule I can never seem to get off work to attend "maintenace days", therefore this past weekend I relied on the forum and some general mechanical "know how" to do it myself. Most of the maintenance items are no big deal for most of you but a couple of things I completed was a personal accomplishment for me. The list of things completed: New tires front and back (E3's) mounted and balanced, brakes checked, engine oil and filter changed, rear hub and gears greased and oil changed. I would like to check my carbs and sync them and check/lub the steering head if need but goes beyond my comfort zone. Hopefully I can find some members close to central Arkansas that can help me with these things. I know I saved some $'s and I now feel less dependant on a dealer. Thanks to all who have posted pictures and descriptions it has been a HUGE HELP !!!!!!!!!!!

Recently my 87 speedometer has started screaming like a ban-chi past 20mph. I have greased the cable but need some other ideas. Thanks

Yesterday I washed the bike. Today while hitting the road I found that I could not get the radio to switch stations and the CB would come up as CBer. If I shut the bike down and fiddled with the buttons it would finally go off. If I turned it on I had the same issue again. Last year I had unplugged virtually any connection I came across and cleaned and dialectrically greased them, including the radio connections. I read up on some of the other threads involving this. Looks like it may just be a bad controller. Any thoughts on this??

how often should the rearsplines be greased?

While changing my back tire at MD, I took the time to grease my drive shaft spline. Good thing as it was dry. Now when I stop, it seams like my 88VR slips into neutral from 1st gear more easily than it did before. Before I greased the spline, it seemed to be more "sticky" when shifting into neutral. So, is this just my imagination or could a dry spline cause "sticky" shifting into neutral.

i have an 07 rstd - had to replc. rear tire so i did all the normal rear wheel maint. - swapped inner/outer rear pads - pulled hub off and greased pins - greased outer diff. gears and matching wheel diff. gears - pull diff. out (from bike only - not from rear itself) greased the splines - drain diff. and replaced gear oil. reassembled all parts - put it on the ground, cranked it and tried putting into 1st - it wouldn't go, actually won't go into any gear. also when you roll the bike it creaks (diff.?). the only part of this job that caused a little trouble was putting the drive shaft back into the bike, once i got it line up i had to give the back of diff. a good smack with the palm of my hand to get it seated - the four flange acorn nuts were hand tightened (these were the last nuts to be tightened in reassembly) and everything seemed normal. hopefully i did not screw something up too badly...any ideas/suggestions or anyone else ever run into this problem??........HELP !!

Got "Ugly" out to burn out the old gas today. Ran Great!! I didn't want to come back. But started home and stopped to fill back up about a mile above my house. Where I'm well known!! Filled her up and she drew some lookers of course. Told them she was 25 yrs old and ran good. Started her up dropped her into 1st. And she quit. Laughed and tried her again. Fired right up after the slow turn thing. Dropped her into gear . And she quit!!! Had to push her out of the way and play with sidestand switch a little and off I go... I have greased that thing, replaced it, greased it and I guess I'll do it again!! She could have picked a better spot. Friend??? offered push when she was cranking slow.. But still GREAT RIDE!!

I am getting a "clank" sound from the rear when I leave a stop light, ( has nothing to do with the light) I have greased the splines and the drive shaft thinking this was the problem, that didn`t do it. I am wondering if maybe the swingarm bushings/bearings need greased or re-tourqed.... or if I am looking in the wrong place... I have checked everything for any loose nuts or bolts, grabbed and tried to shake the rear end to see if I could duplicate the sound, no luck. I have noticed that if I stop only using the front brake, that I don`t hear that noise when taking off...Any help would be great!! Thanks, Kbay

Changed the oil and final fluid today. Checked the air filter. Plugs are burning clean and still within gap tolerance. Synced carbs just a few weeks ago. New tires were put on 12 months/12,000 miles ago and driveshaft was greased good. Coolant level is good. Me thinks I am good to go. Anything else to check?

Anybody else ever have a problem with their tach making noise? At first I thought my speedo needed to be greased again. I greased the speedo and the noise was still there. It would come and go but not stay gone. Then I noticed that when I engaged the clutch when going down the road the noise stopped. I hit the throttle and it came back. Then I had a "DUH!" moment and realized it was the tach making the annoying noise.

I noticed a noise coming from the rear end area when slowing down and coasting with clutch pulled in, I thought it was coming from the hub splines and pins needing greased so I pulled the rear wheel and greased them both. The sound is still there, it is a lower pitched sound that kind of warbles. So now I am wondering if it might be the u-joint as the bike has 57K. Does anyone know what is involved in checking u-joint for wear, or even replacing if it needs it?

When you go to reinsert drive shaft will it slide all the way in and still not be connected right or will it stop before being fully inserted if not connecting right. \ I pulled mine and greased it and it slid right back in no probs so before I button things up would like to know.\ \ Thanks John
