  1. I see a lot of members traveling all over the place. I for one would have loved to know that other then sleeping on the welcome center Between Norfolk VA and Dismal swamp state park in NC. There were members houses, near by ( a warm Bed or even a place to pop open a tent. ) would have been better then sleeping curb side. Is there a way to log in on a map, (Google maps) plot your route. and see if anyone, would offer a room or a place to drop your tent )? Like to anyone that was riding through, Vero Beach FL, my home is a VR House. I know there is a List of were people live, But I was thinking from an offering stand point, other then having to call someone, out of the blue.
  2. The address I have used for Google maps, which was setup to my hometown, has changed. Before, it came up with Johnson City in the middle and I could slide the portion on the leftside of the page out of the way. Now it comes up with a box with a lot of symbols and scrolling down will get me a map of middle Tennessee, but I can not do anything with it. Has anybody else's Google map changed? I have tried downloading several Google Map addresses and it still does the same. RandyA
  3. Does anyone know why a TCP packet is sent to Google every time I use the site? TCP Packet - Source:192.168.0.2,3039 Destination:gh-in-f155.1e100.net,80 The Destination is Google in Mountain View Ca. It may just be because of the revolving ads:
  4. i was using google chrome and google just knocked me off vr.org it said the site was compromised by hackers has this happened to anyone else yet or am i the only one Don if you read his can you check into this it says maleware detected and will not let me proceed any further using google now i have no problem with IE and have not checked fire fox
  5. As a little kid back in the 1960s, one of my favorite cartoons was The Jetsons. They had all the coolest robotic stuff to make their lives easier… Rosie the maid, the conveyor belt dog walker and especially the flying automated cars. As an adult, I see that same cartoon as a dark harbinger of our future. It should come to no one’s surprise that Congress believes that we cannot think for ourselves. In their eyes, we cannot be trusted with our own safety. In their minds, we are the unwashed masses that need constant direction and ever-present supervision. They say that it is for our own good, and we have seen it coming all along. It’s name is Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and it wants your motorcycle off the road. Former Senator Bob Letourneau had this to say when I forwarded a link to an article about Google & ITS to the MRF Reps mailing list: “We certainly talked about that at a MRF Board meeting over ten years ago when ITS was first introduced, Wayne Curtin warned the Feds that they would have to take motorcycles under consideration during development. MRF was one of the first organizations to step up and speak to this issue. I guess we are now a lot closer to reality...” What Bob was commenting on is this recent headline - Google Unveils Driverless Car Tech. A company that started out making the results of your web searches more relevant is upping the ante, and they’re holding all the cards. Instead of finding results for your search on “spark plug gap on 2002 Harley Evo engine”, they are geek-deep in self-driving car technology. In fact, a full ten percent of the folks employed by the search engine giant are dedicated to the building of autonomous vehicles. These driverless cars, completely controlled by computers, are said to be for the betterment of highway safety and traffic decongestion. The car operates with a $75,000 laser spinning around on its roof that generates a 360º, three dimensional model of the space around the vehicle and compares that information to known maps. It can then use that data in a manner that gives it omnipotence of every road and traffic light, but it also recognizes the position of every other car on the road as well as pedestrians. This all happens regardless of weather or time of day. The Google robot car recently completed a one thousand mile trek through complex city traffic and highway conditions. Nevada’s legislature recently passed legislation requiring their state Department of Motor Vehicles to create the rules that will govern these robot cars. Google has high hopes that the federal government and even other countries will follow Nevada’a lead and do the same. This scenario begs the question… what if you have outstanding parking tickets and the cops detect that you have entered one of these driverless cars? Will you then be locked in and chauffeured downtown to address your grievous crimes? Didn’t these geniuses ever see 2001: A SpaceOdyssey? I seem to remember that the primary focus of that flick was about an all-controlling computer gone rogue. Or, even better yet… don’t they remember George Jetson flying around the electric dog walker?
  6. I was just noticing that since I changed to google chrome I cant see my profile picture. When I log in using IE I see it but I dont when I use google chrome. 7. I see many posts here stating that the search function does not work or does not work well but if you know he best way to use it, it actually works very well and is simple to use. I concede that the base function included with VBulletin leaves a lot to be desired. That is why I long ago installed a modification called "Google Search". It is very simple to use and returns much better results than the standard search function. Here is the best way to search the VentureRider forum. First of all. Make sure you are on the home page of the forum, NOT the Venturerider home page. The home page of the forum is the page that lists all the various forum areas such as Watering Hole, First Gen Tech Talk, etc. To make it simple, you want to be at http://www.venturerider.org/forum At the top of the page are two blue menu bars. You will see the "Search" link in the lower menu bar. It is the third button from the right side. Click on the "Search" button and a drop down menu will open. Do not enter your search terms in the top field. Look at the very bottom of the drop down menu and you will see an option for "Google Search". That is what you want to use. Enter your search term, for example "oil", in the field just below "Google Search". Do NOT click search just yet. You have two selections to choose from just under the field where you enter your search terms. The are "web" and "www.venturerider.org". You want to click on the circle beside "www.venturerider.org". That way you are searching only the venturerider forum and not the entire Internet. After you have entered your search term and clicked on "www.venturerider.org", then click the button that says "Google Search". That's all there is to it and it works very well. I am adding some pictures to show exactly what you should be seeing. The first picture simply shows which search button I am referring to. The second shows what you should see when you click on the search link. The third shows what you should enter to search for, example, oil.
  8. Has anybody clicked on the Google thingy just above the search bar. Pretty cool
  9. Read this. This is scary stuff: http://m.cnn.com/primary/wk_article?articleId=urn:newsml:CNN.com:20120209:ghitis-google-privacy:1&branding=commentary&category=cnnd_latest&pagesize=10
  10. Ever wonder how much would be gone if a nuke fell on a city or town? Or just having a bad day and wanna nuke something? Here is a website that allows you to select the nuke you like and drop it whereever you pick in google maps. It isnt violent but it can sure make you realize how much damage can be done by a warhead. http://www.carloslabs.com/node/20
  11. On Oct. 29th I ordered some parts online and waited and waited. Their add said 6 to 10 bussiness days for shipping. After waiting for 18 days and no parts I sent them an e-mail and the reply I got was to check the terms and conditions. Well I sent e-mail #2 and reminded them what their terms and conditions read. Got back same reply. I tried calling them but the # that is on the add is one that you have to have a code to dial to talk to a human. Which they don't give out in their add. So I decided to look on google earth to see if there was something that they were hiding. Sure enough, they were a dealership and they had a different phone number on the add that is online for the store. I gave it a try and actually got an answer. It was the sales desk and they did some checking and found that my parts were there and should have been sent to me over a week ago. The guy told me that the parts mgr wasn't there but would have him call me back the next day. No phone call. But, I got an e-mail last night stating that my parts would be shipped on Monday 2 day air. If not for google earth I would still be trying to figure out which headhunter (er... Venturerider) to send after them.
  12. I found this software program for GPS's. It is a route planner that is supposed to be compatible with both Garmin and TomTom and works in conjunction with Google earth and Google maps. You are supposed to be able to plot out your route and then upload it to your GPS. I am curious If anyone is familiar with it and have tried it. Here is the link to tyre's home page http://www.tyre.tk/ It would seem to me (unless I misunderstood) that you would not have to keep updating your gps maps either if using this program. I have an old TOM TOM that I thought I would try it out on
  13. Hi guys, Nice forum! I am a new Venture owner and loving it! I just picked up a Gen 1 VR (86) and I could use some help finding a part. Overall the bike is in great shape but it was dropped by the previous owner and caused some fairing damage. http://www.raymondstacy.com/vr1.jpg I have spent the last few days checking Ebay, CL, Google and I haven't had any luck finding the piece. Any help that you can give me would be very much appreciated. Ray

  15. If you haven't seen it, you can go to google.com and press the "insert coin" button to play an online version of Pac-Man. It's Pac-Man's 30th anniversary, and to celebrate Google is making this available for next couple days or so. Good luck!
  16. Well look what I found while planning a trip! Go to Google maps at 3240 U.S. 2, St. Ignace, MI, United States Click the little guy and drag him to see the road at that address. You will see a black pick-up on side of the road, click the arrow to go toward the pick-up and you will see a white Venture with a trailer come at you . Google got you!!! Anyone from here? You are a celebrity now! Bryan
  17. I didn't notice any post related to this sorry if it already been posted... 18. If you guys have not been on Google Earth lately, they have added street level for a lot of places and it is amazing how much is there. We took a ride over to Norris dam, north of Knoxville yesterday and while at work today, I loaded Google Earth on my new computer and went down some of the same country roads we were on yesterday. I also went around the world to Thailand and you can see the bunkers where the F-4 Phantoms were parked that are still there. This was at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base where I was stationed in '72. Just amazing. RandyA
  19. Well all, it is time to get serious about planning the spring rides. My brother and I have a real doozy coming up. Sometime around the middle of March, probably between the 10th and the 15th, we will be heading out to ride all the way around the state of Texas, sticking as close to the border as possible. We will be riding counter-clockwise, starting in Texarkana. The exact date is not locked in yet since we think this is still pretty early in the year, and the weather could get a little dicey up in the panhandle. We will be watching the long range forecasts and plan on KSU as soon as wee see a good two week window. Any and all of you that might want to ride along, even for just a part of the way, are more than welcome. I haven't finished the exact route yet, but it is getting close. Maybe in a day or two it will be all done. Best estimate right now is the trip will be about 4,500 miles and take maybe 16 days. You can see my work in progress here (but don't just click on the link!): Google Maps KML file link If you just click on that link it will try to load all the data into Google Earth, but then you won't be able to see changes I make. To display this entire route on one screen in Google Maps you need to kind of trick it. You need to COPY that link by right clicking on it and selecting "Copy Link Location" (or "Copy Shortcut" if using IE), open Google Maps and paste the link into the Search Maps box, then hit search. Once the map comes up you can put it in your My Maps and it will always be there. Each time you open or refresh Google Maps it will display the total route in its most current state. Every inch of this route has been selected by tracing the exact roads through the satellite pictures zoomed in close in Google Earth - several weeks worth of work! You will see lots of different parts of the track around the border, in various colors just so I could keep each piece straight while working on it. These are VERY detailed tracks, following every specific road and curve. Most of them stick to paved roads, - we're not riding dual-sport machines, ya know? But there are some sections, especially over in the panhandle and down above Big Bend where they get into some pretty significant dirt. We have no idea yet if we will actually attempt some of those roads - plan on deciding as we go along. I don't ordinarily care which exact roads I ride, but trying to stay close to the border on this trip has become like a treasure hunt for me. One other thing you will see are some much less detailed pink tracks. You probably want to un-check all of these to not display, since they really don't have any value in Google Maps. These are the special tracks I have made to import into my GPS and let it navigate the plotted routes. I have done a lot of testing with both my XOG GPS and Micro$oft Streets & Trips, and when told to navigate those pink tracks they follow the detailed tracks almost perfectly. Maybe we'll see some of ya on the road! Ride safe, Goose
  20. There are a lot of good deals to be found on Craigslist. However, it is craigslist's policy to only deal local. So even if you live inbetween three craigslist cities (like I do) you have to search each city's website idependantly. It's actually craigslist policy to prevent people from buying or selling over distance. The problem is, when you know what you want, you don't mind driving a few hours or waiting a few weeks to get the item in the mail. So I think I found a way to search for stuff, using google, on craiglist. This should work for any decent search engine, I just like google. First of all, if you click on the "Advanced Search" button Google will enter all of these details for you. First off, enter the terms you want to search for: yamaha venture Google will search for and return a result for any website that has either yamaha or venture somewhere in the page. This will return first gens, second gens, vans, snowmobiles, etc. So let's say you are only interested in the Second Gens. You can limit the search more by adding a phrase, surrounded by quotation marks. Enter the term: "Royal Star Venture" Now google will search for any website that has yamaha, venture, or royal star venture. However, those sites that have all three will be prioritized to the top. If you are not interested in a chevy van, or a yamaha snowmobile (both of which are also called venture) you can delete search terms with the negative sign: –chevy –chevrolet –ski –snow –rs –snowmobile No google will exclude any site that mentions one of the negative signs. Finally, you can search within a specific domain by adding the term site: site:craigslist.org The final search term should look like this: yamaha venture "royal star venture" -chevy -chevrolet -ski -snow -rs -snowmobile site:craigslist.org Again, google will enter all of this information for you if you click the "advanced search" button. Now, google does have a couple of limitations: 1. If someone list an item on craiglist, google will not find it for several hours to several days. 2. The search results can be outdated. 3. You still may miss some items that aren't listed correctly, and get a hit on some other items you don't want that are listed incorrectly. Either way, , and happy hunting!
  21. I was looking in the who's online page this morning and there were a bunch of listings like Google adsense spider. What are those? Said it was searching forums. Just wondering.
  22. I received this information from Douglas Harless and thought it was worth passing on. As you know, most cell phone providers charge extra if you call directory assistance. Google offers a free service that does the same thing. I haven't tried it yet but understand that it works very well. They even connect you. http://www.google.com/goog411/
  23. I was out riding today and stopped at one of my favorite view sites on the southern end of the Big Island. For those who know, this is right above Whittington Beach Park in the District of Ka'u. It was a GLORIOUS day! To the right you'll see the plume that is emitted from the Pu'u O'o vent at Kilauea Volcano. It is responsibly for all the Vog (google it) here on the Big Island. On the right side you'll see (not very well though) the steam plume from where the lava is entering the ocean. Basically the island is growing. In about 100,000 years that's gonna be one heck of a nice beach!
  24. Greetings all! I have a small issue I would like to lay on the table. I have a new Zumo 500 and the MapSource map/software for North America as well as Iceland installed on my computer as well on my memory card in the Zumo. Have been planing some routes from Woodstock twn,NY to Oberlin OH. for my trip to Freebirds Maintenance Day. When I make a route on the map that is stored in my computer I can push a button that says "open in Google Earth". No problem there - it opens in Google Earth but the route does not follow the roads. Just straight lines from each trackpoint to another that I had made in the MapSource. Doesn´t help much if I want to take a ride in 3D on Google Earth to see the landscape I will be riding through. Does anybody know if there is a way around this to make the route follow the roads in Google Earth, previously trackpointed in the MapSource map? Then again - Maybe this is not compatible???? Note that transferring the routes from the computer to my Zumo is no problem and works just fine. Hope you get my drift!
  25. While watching a segment of American Thunder that covered the Harley History Museum, they covered a bike that had never been released to the public called the Nova. It had a V4 water cooled motor. Very interesting......... Did a little search on Google and came up with THIS
