Hello from SE PA. I ride with a number of other RSTD and Venture Owners and we've been talking a lot about "the whine" on the RS models. My '06 RSTD whines. Dealers have different responses, replacing the clutch, changing fluids, telling people there is nothing they can do about it and there have also been a wide range of experiences dealing with Yamaha. It's obviously a wide spread, well known issue on the RS models. It's not advertised - most people find out only after they purchase one and are frustrated that they have almost no options. These are touring machines that can be so loud it's no fun to ride them and putting them into the shop takes away time from the rider. I'm interested in finding out if there is a 100% fix and what Yamaha is doing about it. If there is no fix and Yamaha is not interested in taking care of their customers people will speak with their feet. After going through something similar with my old car (euro) I dumped it and went with a new one (japanese). With the new car I had a problem with 3rd gear - I told the dealer, they had gears ordered and installed within 3 days so getting rid of the old one was the right thing to do. Any input on a fix and Yamaha's response would be appreciated. Last year a member asked me to help fix his bike, turned out that water had got into the motor and it was ceased. He picked it up and has it parked since then under cover. It's been a few years since it has been used. He wants to donate it to somebody deserving. Let me know if you're interested. It's in Georgetown Ontario

exhaust leak: Want cheap fix
Auld posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've got an exhaust leak right out of the rear cylinder on the right side. Took off the clamp and saw the metal ring somewhat rusted, so it doesn't fit tightly any more. I would like to fix this without taking the whole bike apart. Someone suggested JB Weld. I've used it before in different applications, but not in such a hi-temp spot. Will it work where the exhaust is coming through at its hottest? Is there some kind of RTV caulk that will stand these temps? -

OK first of all this site rocks. Since I bought my 85 Venture I have found most everything I needed to know here. But I have a rear end issue that I'm sure is common. I was going to replace the gear oil in the rear end. Book says .3 of a liter or 300ml. Get a measuring cup just to see how much drains out. Get my allen head sockets and 19mm socket for the drain and sit on the floor. The fill cap on the rear, about half way up looks a little knarly but the metric allen slides in sorta tight. Give a pull with the ratchet and around it comes....ta da stripped.....I assume this should not be this tight. Tried the SAE a little bigger and tapped it in with a hammer...no good. Is there a easy fix for this? I could drill it out and save the threads and get a new cap. Only worry is that the filings would fall down inside!! Not good! As always looking to fix the most economical. But if I need to go to the dealer I will. Thanks everybody!!

I cleaned it up a little, did some searching, in doing so I found a spare key under one of the side covers, and speaking of side covers, found 4 broken tabs, on the fix list, added seafoam to the tank, runs like crap on heavy concentration of sea foam......let it soak and try it again tomorrow, will be changing the plugs, check the diaphrams and replace if neccessary. I took it for about a 6 mile ride, it will take some getting used to. Going to replace the fuse box, pulled out 1 fuse and one of the spades that holds it in broke.........on the fix list too. Here are some pics just after the wash, still need to polish and clean up some of the alum and chrome. And the lovely couple who delivered the bike decked out in their St. Jude shirts..............

85 Temperature Gauge Issue!
af226 posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 85 temp gauge has stopped working. Fan still starts when the bike heats up so everything is working except the actual gauge. Is there a cost effective/easy fix. Seem that all the wires are there and attached. Thanks. -

Today I picked up DenDen's 83 Standard. Some folks here know how well he took care of this bike. He wanted to part ways with the bike since he no longer rides so he made me a deal I couldn't refuse. There's some work to be done of course since it hasn't been on the road in about 4 years. maybe more, but that bike is sure in very good shape for a 29 year old. There's no broken plastic except for one tab on a side panel which should be easy to fix since the tab is there. Mechanically I'll need to fix a water leak somewhere below the radiator, rebuild the forks, & either rebuild the rear master cylinder or replace it, & replace a 8 year old battery. As far as I know at this point those are the things needing attention. Got a few extra parts he tossed in as well. I don't expect to put it on the road till spring so during the next few months & winter I'll be going over this bike bringing the old girl back to pristine condition once again. Larry

when I still didn't have my title after two months I contacted the dealer, which claimed they had been calling me ... on a number I never gave them, but that's a different story. Anyway, I wound up telling them that I would drop the bike of so they could fix this problem, but what would they give me to ride wile they did? That turned out to be a 02 (?) Wing. Not a bad ride, though it had a slight head shake and not something I would want as a daily rider, problem is, driving home this morning I had a situation and the the bike wound up going down the road without me. This is where the problem starts. I called the insurance and got a claim number, I called the dealer and passed on the information and made arrangements to bring the Wing over there. I would have preferred to ride it over to get my own bike back (they have the title now), but hey, I'm mostly OK, so I shouldn't complain. Anyhow, they won't give me my bike! They want me to pay them the difference between the suddenly diminished value of my Valk I/S and this Wing (2500) OR, they want a check from the insurance company. At the same time they already started pushing for me to buy the Wing using the Valk and the insurance money and then I can fix it or have them fix it. They are claiming they did not have insurance on it for me to drive it?! They are also saying that this Wing was under contract and the guy was making payments. I just want my Valk and I just don't see that they can deny me that at this point. Suggestions?? As far as what I can see on the Wing: forks/handlebar twisted/bent, fairing pushed back/cracked/scraped, mirrors, right exhaust, right crash and bag bar, possibly front rim. http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/Themes/SSVR/images/icons/modify_inline.gif

Luckily, both Susan & I RODE away without even a scratch. The bike... well... not so much. My pride... well... you know. VERY steep hill, very sharp hairpin turn, and I was negligent enough or arrogant enough to attempt it in 3rd gear. Right at the apex of the turn, the bike lugged, shuddered, and stalled. The roadbed was very steep to our right, so the bike pitched us off like ragdolls. we were tossed clear into some very soft loose gravel, and our full riding gear paid for itself in a nanosecond. Long story longer, the bike got skinned up pretty bad. All the plastic on the right side got deep scratches. No cracks, though. Took it to the dealership this am for an insurance estimate, and they don't actually FIX anything. they just replace it. What I really want to do is take the check from the insurance, and fix it myself, if they'll go with that. Funny thing is, I was just getting ready to spring for a new F4 tall & wide windshield. Have a good reason to toss the old one now. Nice, big greasy slab of humble pie for me. I have been riding for only 19 months, logging about 17,000 miles along the way, so I think I am fortunate to get off this easy.
