  1. I have a '83 std with a few problems. I have nicknamed the bike Frankenstein due to a busted windscreen that now has some plexiglass stirps small bolts and fender washers holding it together. Question 1: She slips in 2nd gear at wot, doesn't pop out, just slips. Is this the dreaded 2nd gear problem? I have been planning on tearing her down this winter. Most of the plastics are in bad shape. From ebay I have managed to buy both side upper fairings and a trunk shipped for about 250. THe fairings need some repair but not much and much less than the current ones. Front forks need rebuilt, since they are apart might as well put some progressive springs in them. WHen I let off the throttle at highway speeds she seems to want to nose dive a bit, is this normal? I am also having some front brake issues so I will go through the whole brake system. WHen 2 up riding i seem to bottom out the rear shock when I hit bumps, thinking progressive needs to update that as well. I am also thinking of putting Vmax heads and cams on her. Got it apart might as well. RIght now when I start her up she pours fuel out of the overflow hose coming off the carbs. THinking I might need to do some carb work also. Is there any way to rejet the carb? Just kind of looking for a few little performance nuggets. I also read a post that someone cut and tinted a windscreen so that is on my list of things to do. And have her back on the street by March(my birthday). Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions greatly appreciated.
  2. ......... fine Swiss watch! Short version of a long story. Last fall I bought a 89 VR and took it to Earl and told him to do whatever it needed to make it run like new. Well, he kept the bike over the winter and spent many, many hours going thru the bike from top to bottom and front to back. He did everything but remove the engine from the frame. He sent me a two page list of all the things he did to the bike. In April, I picked up the bike and decided to have it painted because I had to replace the front fairings, as they were damaged on the left side. The bike was blue and the fairings were black (thank you to Doug Nordin for the fairings). So, off to the paint shop for three weeks. Well, now I have it done and took a ride on it to Bongobob's 4th of July BBQ. I have to thank Earl for all the hours he put in over the winter, working on the bike. The bike runs so smooth, I can't believe it has the same motor in it. Thank you, Earl. You have no idea how happy I am with your work. I am now going to have it pin stripped and then will be finished with it. Also, a big thank you to Rick Butler. Your seat mod is so comfortable, I can now ride for hours. Everyone should have your seat mod done. Below is a pic of the bike after it was painted. PS....to Earl: I already have a list of things to do to the bike next winter! Clutch mod and SS lines to start.

  5. Greetings all, I am new to VR's and am wondering about parts interchangeability. I have a 1992 VR and am asking (Other than fairings & bags) what years interchange with mine? Thanks! Dastardly~
  6. Bought bike for parts off Kijiji recently to get the main fairing parts to fix my 87 but when I went to pick-up (3 hours one way) better than average fairings was I ever depressed when the tarp was removed and half off left side was missing and right side broke. I still bought it for the rest to use as spare parts or maybe to trade for what I need.Salvaged a few other parts I needed and will hopefully will find the fairings at good reasonable price(E-Bay is ridiculous.
  7. http://www.recklessmotorcycles.com/roadstar.htm Anybody familiar with Reckless Fairings? I am thinking of putting a fairing on my tour deluxe.
  8. I am looking for a set of front fairings for a 89 VR because the previous owner dropped the bike and broke both fairings. I have been offered a set of fairings from a 83 VR and would like to know if they will fit a 89. I am not that knowledgeable about what the interchangeability is from year to year. Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I can find this information? Thanks. Jim
  9. Hey guys. I'm looking for the 2 front upper fairings and the 2 front lower farings. I've been looking on ebay alot, haven't been able to find anything. If you guys have any spares laying around you'd be willing to sale, i'd really appreciate it. Thanks guys!
  10. My wife bought us a `01 RSV with only 2700 miles on it, and we picked it up yesterday, This bike is brand new, the only thing I have noticed, is that at the bottom of the Radiator where the fairings connect to each other, it looks like maybe there is a peice missing, or maybe just missing a bolt, any Ideas?? Is this common on these bikes?? Thanks
  11. I live in South Kansas City. I have a full set of plastic for a 1983 XVZ1200. Bought a second set so I could fix and paint. Want to get rid of the original. All bags, side fairings, fenders, front fairings etc. It's in the kind of shape you would expect. $100 and pick up by Dec 31st or I am taking it all to the dump. Don't want to deal with shipping. Let me know. Bob
  12. Thanks to many people on this site, that have helped me put together my bike. I also repainted it while I was at it. I'm not a purist so I wanted to make it yellow. I like yellow and I am pretty big on safety. I never really cared for the fairings with the previous color (maroon) but I like the way the brighter colors pop. I am sure that many people won't like it and that is fine. For those of you that have ever wondered what brighter colors might look like on this body style this might give you an idea. Thanks again to all those that have helped me with my bike. Bob P.S. I bought a duplicate set of fairings for my bike so I had an extra set to work on and paint. I now have a fairly complete set of fairings from an 83 for sale if anyone is interested. Would sell all of it for $250
  13. Guess they made different fairings for the '04 '04 Venture Fairing
  14. I'm going out on a limb here. I've seen a couple guys talk about changing the body style of their Gen 1 and get fried so I am going to set this up a little bit. I am in the process of painting all of my fairings. Anyone who has taken off all the fairings knows that 25 year old ABS is "band-aided" together. I am not a mechanical genious, but I think that the ABS fairings are one of the weak links to these machines lasting a lot more years. You can ABS patch and glue as much as you want, but you are still patching 25 year old ABS. I would love to see a thread where some people explore alternative fairing systems for the Gen 1's. For some of you entrepreneurs, I think there could be a little business for a front fairing and a heat sheild for the sides covering up the wire with some leather bags for example. With that, I'll jump off. Be gentle.
  15. I am on my third day of a ten day vacation and since I had a few days with Laura in Birningham at a family reunion, I decided to do a bit of maintenance before our Asheville rally. It has been a year since my bike was knocked over sustaining damage to the right side fairing. I took the fairing off month's ago and did the repairs, but did not get it painted. I decided this would be a good time and my painter said he could work it in, so I tore in to her. Friday I took the fairings to my painter after I had 400 sanded them and was hopeing for a quick turn around. He did a great job adding the base coat on the repaired area without getting in to my ghost flames, but when he started the clearcoat, he had a problem with it spitting, so that will have to be buffed and re done. While I had the fairings off, I decided to replace the fork seals, since one had a very small leak. Got that done and decided to replace all brake pads. Two of the calipers had a sticky piston, so I disassembeled and cleaned them. I also needed to replace the clutch slave hose and got that done. Now, I need to do some work on a cracked panel where the radio goes. If I can get that done tomorrow and get my fairings back, I hope I will be good to go. I hate doing a bunch of maintenance before a trip, but that is how it ended up being. Year before last when getting ready for the trip to Vogal, pulling a 450 lb camper, I decided to replace my transmission from and 86 motor. I had all of 12 miles on it after the repair when we hooked up the camper up and took off and it done great. Well, wish me luck. RandyA
  16. Bought a 83 venture. Front fairings are pretty beat up, was wondering what years are interchangable for the 1983 fairings? I'm going to look around and see if i can find any before i try rebuilding the ones i have.. Still working on cleaning out the back (and front left) brake lines. Thanks to the info on this site i know what to do! lol
  17. I finally completed repairing and painting my fairings. I'm no painter but they turned out not half bad. the light colour is am metallic pearl used by Saab, and the dark colur is a metallic pearl used by Mazda.
  18. How to Remove Your 2nd Gen Radiator Well let me start off by saying 14 months ago I had a little Mishap, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2437&highlight=Radiator+Leak I had to remove my Radiator and I decided to have it welded. Seems that part Held up ok... but now I have another leak, so here go’s Also, I had to use my Daughters Dig Camera and the pictures are not that great But I hope this helps someone if needed. (Note: all left and right are As if I was sitting on the bike) # 1 Remove the two bolts on the left and right lower fairings (# 4 mm Allen Wrench) #2 Look way under the bottom in the middle of the two lower fairings there will be A black plastic screw that helps hold the lower fairings together... the black bolt goes into this hole. #3 now remove the one bolt on the other sides near your air filters #4 here is a critical part in removing the two half’s. Make sure you Remove the RIGHT Lower fairing first, or you will most likely break on of these tabs, if you do JB Weld holds them back In place just fine. I know this because I broke on last year! This is how the two half’s look a bit apart left/right #5 remove the white plastic hose holder down under at the bottom of the lower fairings. #6 Now remove the black power wire on the left side for the fan this will be located on the left side. #7 Now remove the drain plug and drain the antifreeze. #8 Now the FUN part… loosen the top clamp for the rad hose. And next the lower clamp, I did notice the first time I loosened The clap after the factory had placed them they were very hard To get to.. Now I placed them so I can remove them in the future If needed. #9 The Bottom hose MUST be removed first, stick a screwdriver Or whatever in base of the hose to loosen it a bit. Do not tear the hose. Just deal with it and it will come loose sooner or later. #10 now work on removing that top hose in the same manner, As it starts to come loose you will be removing the Rad with A pulling downward motion and also remove it from the top TAB HOLDER. #11 Now with the RAD kind of hanging in place make sure you might want to put a towel on the rear of the front fender as well.. DISCONNET the Orange Plug from the Temp Censer. Squeeze the top/rear and it will pull right off. Now you have removed the Radiator. Here are some shoots not very good but what to Remove from the Rad before having it Welded Or Adding the Rad Parts back onto a new one Like I just ordered.. I will have this one checked And re-welded for a back-up in the future maybe. Here are some pics of how my old one looks now and the old Weld, looks like it help up.. I also have ordered a NEW RADITATOR Cover from Steve. To match my MM Venture. So maybe this will my love of removing 2nd Gen Radiators? http://www.wagnercustomproducts.com/ Should look very kewl! I hope nobody has to go through this ever! And if So I hope this helps you a bit. Feel free to PM me if you need to contact Me about this project if you ever have to do this. Thanks again Scotty. Jeff
  19. Hi all. I want to fit the front fairings and plastics to my 1983 Yamaha XVZ1200 Venture Royal, to make sure every thing's there, where do I start and what screws rubber mountings do I need as I know I'm missing most, if not all the mounting screws etc, I've just got the fairings and plastic inserts. Thanks all.
  20. I recieved a Sebel horn. Can it be installed in place of one of the stock horns? Has anyone placed it in the side fairings? I do not want to split the front fairing. BikerJohn
  21. I have owned a couple of sport touring bikes. What I always liked about them was the fixed fairings. I could go 90 mph, hold the handle bar with one hand while resting the other hand on my hip, and go as straight as an arrow, cutting through wind like a knife. I also owned a Harley. You couldn't ride a Harley like that. It was both hands on the bar. It always felt as if the handlbars would rip out of my hands when I rode with one hand. The RSV does not have a fixed fairing. I suspect the feeling is going to be similar to riding a Harley. I am almost sure of it. Would someone comment on this?
  22. Hey folks, I got an 84 that came back from the shop today with carbs fixed. But now the steering berings are bad. I have decided to sell the bike as is or for parts. I have stripped the luggage off and started to prime for paint. The side fairings are off as well. The lower fairings are damaged. The front fairings (with some wear) are intact and on the bike. This bike now runs great and is mechanically sound but I can't afford to put any more into it. I was going to paint it but even that decision has changed. I will take offers for the bike as is and then if I don't get any for the bike I will start to part it out. It would be a great bike for someone who is mechaincally inclined and could do the work. I am not and don't have the patience or time. Please reply to this post or call me at 812-661-0108 and lets talk. I would love for somebody in this group to get her before I go EBAY. Derek
  23. I have managed to get my left rear fairing off without any problems but can't get the right side to budge. Have read threads on taking off front fairing and seat but not much on rear fairings. Do I need to take off the seat to get at the 'hangers' for the rear fairings or do they sometimes get rusted in a stubborn? Didn't want to break the snap off trying to get it off... Thanks James
  24. is there anybody whom has figured out a way to let more air in throught the lower Fairings (above the floor boards) so me feet wont get so hot in the summer?
