  1. Thought I would share this message I received in a e-mail a few minutes ago..... In October of 1863, just a few months after the bloodiest fighting of the Civil War at the Battle of Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation setting aside the last Thursday of November “as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise.” His proclamation read in part, “In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict.” We celebrate Thanksgiving again this year with men and women, husband and wives, sons and daughters, engaged in battle and fighting for our freedom, not on the soil of this country but in distant lands far away from their friends, family and loved ones. On this day, set aside for giving thanks, we express our gratitude to the warriors who selflessly serve to protect our country and the American way of life. We express our gratitude to their families, who tirelessly support our Service members while their loved ones serve in harm’s way. And we express gratitude to those caregivers who willingly take on the monumental task of assisting our wounded, ill and injured Service members as they travel their own road to recovery. This holiday season we encourage you to express your own gratitude to our brave men and women in uniform, particularly our wounded warriors. Shake their hands in the airport, take a few minutes to listen to their extraordinary stories. Or, best of all, connect them to employment resources and opportunities that will help facilitate their smooth and productive reintegration to civilian life. We echo the words of President Lincoln when he said, “I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessing, they do also… commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners and sufferers… and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.” A Happy Thanksgiving to All! Boomer....with best wishes and respect to all.
  2. Lone Eagle and I have had this email problem for several months now and haven't been able to figure out what causes it. I can send or forward emails to Vic, and he receives them just fine, but when he tries to reply using OUTLOOK..not Outlook Express.. the reply disappears into cyber space. He can go to his ISP email account and send me a copy email and I get it.. no problem. So it seems to be a problem somewhere between his local OUTLOOK program and his ISP, and it's a PITA. BTW all other email addresses go through fine. Does anyone know what might cause this?? I thought I might be on the 'bad guy' list, but he's checked that out, and I'm not. I use Outlook Express, and don't have a clue about Outlook controlls.
  3. I have an 08 RSV and am thinking of buying a coachman express camper, it is 450 pound dry weight, is that to heavy for my RSV? If not any recommendations on a good hitch to get?
  4. The Lake Express Ferry just announce that motorcycles will travel free in May and June. Also, if reservations are made online, they will be free Sept and Oct as well. This is a great way to avoid Chicago traffic. My wife and I (and the Venture) have taken it a couple of times. Very nice. http://www.lake-express.com/newsletters/10MarMRF/index.html?utm_medium=email&utm_source=CampaignMonitorEmails&utm_content=990060759&utm_campaign=2010-MAR-MotorcyclesRideFreeKickoff+_+oitukr&utm_term=Clickhere RR
  5. Over the years I have always pulled my own maintenance on my vehicles, especially my bikes, however as I have gotten older I have found that changing oil on my cars has been somewhat of an issue with my arthritis. I started frequenting those 10 minute oil change shops such as Jiffy Lube and Texaco Express lube and each time there has been something lacking with their performance. So, after several years of using them I swore that from now on ill just tuff it out and change my own oil. It just seemed that they never did just what they advertised they would do. From something as minor as not washing the window or vacuuming the interior (as advertised) to rounding off the head of the bolt and not fixing it, leaving me to discover it at the next oil change. Sometimes I have found less oil in the engine then it called for. My Trailblazer for example holds 7 qts of oil and I am charged for the additional 2 quarts. When I get it home I usually found it down a quart even though I paid for 2. Of course they correct it but the hassle of going back is a PIA. So, today I decided to change my oil in my Trailblazer myself and I bought 7 qts of oil and a good filter. Get the truck up in the air and discover an inspection plate that needs to be removed to access the oil bolt and filter was left off completely. Not a big issue but that only means that Texaco Express has a cover, 2 bolts and a snap clip laying around somewhere. I mean, where has quality control and pride of workmanship gone to? That old saying "if you want it done right then do it yourself" sure does apply here. I guess it really is what it is!! And I cant even claim this mild rant as winter blues since it was 75 here today....

    Road Rage

I don't know if anyone else here has been following, or is aware of the road rage shooting case that has played out over the last year in Southern Indiana. I and several of my riding friends have kept up with it pretty closely, and have had some emotional conversations around it. I see from another post that Jethroish posted on it in June '08 and there was some discussion then. The jury convicted her today and she's looking at 6 to 20 yrs. Also, she had at least 2 previously reported incidents where she pulled her gun, one at a ball park and another in traffic near the same area where the shooting occured, which could not be presented at trial but can be at sentencing. While I've never felt "invincible" while riding, I have taken the opportunity, as I'm sure several have, to express my displeasure at the inattentive, and seemingly arrogant-toward-bikes drivers. I feel that Wesley Mosier, the guy that was shot, made one almost-fatal mistake, he got off the bike and confronted her about the incident. But it could just as easily happened as a roll up too. Here is a link to the story if anyone is interested. It just makes me think a little more now. http://www.wlky.com/news/20239519/detail.html
  7. As some of you know, I was stranded in Erie, PA at the end of my summer vacation ride. My rear tire was showing cords and wasn't trustworthy to take the final 700 miles to home. This was Saturday night. That night and the next day, I tried to find a tire (MC or car tire) and someplace to install it. No luck. Searching on the internet, I found a local Yamaha dealer named Off-Road Express. They did not open until 9:00 on Monday morning, so we (my father was riding with us and stayed around) hunkered down with the remaining Jim Beam and cigars thru Sunday. Off-Road Express did not have an answering machine when I called trying to provide some forewarning of my plight. However, there was an email address on their website. I sent a note to them advising my being there at 9:00 Monday morning and needing some help. I arrived at the dealer at 9:00. Went in and talked with the Parts counter (Frank). They had the tire and gave me a discount (even though they had me by the short hairs). I then went to the Service Manager (Brian) and explained my trouble. He checked with the shop and they had my machine on the rack by 9:15. At 10:05, my bike was back in the parking lot. The technician - Garry (I think) - took the time to explain a couple of things he noticed when he took a short test ride. No rush, no pressure, just bikers getting a fellow traveler back on the road. While getting my riding gear back on, Joe Askins - Vice President came out and said, "You must be Jeff. I just read your email. Did you get taken care of?" When I advised that I had, he thanked me for the business and offered to have the bike cleaned off (it was nasty from about 3000 miles of bugs). I declined, but thanked him for the offer. Here's the kicker - $160 total out the door for a Dunlop 404 installed!!!! There shop was clean, professional, and had a great selection of accessories, fluids, and stuff. They also had an '07 Blue/Black RSV and a RSTD (didn't check the year). They carry Yamaha and Victory. This is a dealer I will recommend to anybody in - or travelling thru - the Erie area.
