  1. Well I went & did it. I picked up the HF mini trailer yesterday. With coupons & sales it came to $143. I spent most of this afternoon putting it together & cursing Chinese manufacturing. In general the components are good. Some of the Bolts & nuts are not machined properly. I had to use my tap & die set waaayy too much today. Getting it squared was fun as well. Once everything was true I retightened eveything with my impact gun. (I will be stick welding it as well. Although it's sold as an 870lbs capacity trailer, it is rated at 1060 max load. My intention is to make this a multi use trailer (if needed). I can add a floor & sides to haul stuff, & I do have a 5/8 " steel U rail that can be placed on it to haul my VR in case of an emergency (get home short hop) since the VR is 911LBS. But for the most part it will be a tag along for me to pull behind my Gen1. Tomorrow I have fenders & wiring to do as well as add the 18cu ft rooftop cargo carrier. I aslo have the swivel hitch to mount on the VR. Here's where I stand so far. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/album.php?albumid=1121&pictureid=7122 Now I'M TIRED!!!! http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dbnCgEZBVp0/SaOx9_Rie1I/AAAAAAAAAec/YPQWJ4aKBkw/s320/tired+smiley.bmp.jpg
  2. The following description of my exhaust pipe problem encountered during the first week of our recent five week trip and my emergency repair was originally posted in my thread "Our Venture West". It has been over 10,000 km since I did this emergency fix and it has worked so well and without any exhaust leak that I don't plan on any further repair. While traveling along the Yellowhead Trail through Saskatchewan on our recent trip west, my exhaust noise got louder and still louder again after part of the chrome heat shield cover to the exhaust pipe broke away. The exhaust pipe from the collector had broken loose from the muffler and the muffler was left hanging by one bolt with no support. The end of the exhaust pipe was rusted and broken away so badly that it couldn't be reconnected to the muffler. Truly an "Oh Sh--" moment that could have ruined our trip west. The first picture shows the exhaust pipe after I removed the muffler. I got lucky as the next town had a Canadian Tire Store (open on Sunday) where I bought an exhaust pipe coupler designed to reduce pipe size and some aluminum duct tape. After removing the original clamp at the mouth of the muffler and wrapping both the front few inches of the muffler and the last few inches of the exhaust pipe with the aluminum duct tape for a tight fit, I slid the coupler over the muffler and the exhaust pipe and bolted my muffler back in place. To my surprise, there is no exhaust leak and I think the joint is as strong as original. I would bet that mine isn't the only first gen with a wore out exhaust pipe under the chrome cover. 3. For those coming to the Asheville Rally, I always like to do an "In Case of Emergency" list. Thankfully, we have not had to use the info for a crash situation, but it was used for coordinating of meet-ups. I would like to use this format so I can just do a cut & paste: It also helps if you keep it a simple font and no color. Your name(s), phone numbers, where staying, estimated arrival, emergency contact number with name or relationship. Randy Atkins 423-726-0431 , KOA, Thur afternoon, 423-335-1484, son Please forward it to my home email; rsatkins@comcast.net or PM me here. I will have copies for everyone who is on the list upon arrival and will be glad to e-mail you a copy before you leave if I have the info by Wednesday or I will see if Warrior can make copies for those that show up early. Thanks, RandyA

  6. Some knew about the red light on cars, but not the 112. It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have always told her never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called 112 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew about the 112 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe place. *Speaking to a service representative at Bell Mobility confirmed that 112 was a direct link to State trooper info. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about 112. You may want to Send this to every woman (and man) you know; it may save a life. 7. It is not the easiest thing I have ever done. Hopefully will be the first and last time. On Monday evening I responded to a very well known address, CPR in progress, possibly heart attack. With all the effort, all the meds, all we had in us we poured into this code patient. Now with a deeply hurting heart tomorrow I say goodbye for the last time to one of our own. Our emergency services director who has built our E911 system to what it is, helped neighboring communities do the same, and she lived for nothing more then to serve the community through our emergency communication facility. I was assigned to assembling the line up of emergency apparatus for the funeral procession. I have detailed our units until I cannot clean no more, have units coming from 6 neighboring communities consisting of fire, police, and ambluance, as well as NE Missouri emergency managment and Air Evac lifeflight lifeteam. No matter if its fire, police, emt, dispatcher, or director, to me we are one of the same. I think I did all I could to make this as fitting as possible to honor her career. I hope it all works out good. Their will be 2 TV stations there as well so I will post some footage of the procession when available. This is a tough assignment and I just hope I completed it to the families satisfaction.
  8. I have been on the fence about modulating headlights for some time now. Obviously from a motorcycle safety perspective this seems like a good option. But after coming across a couple GL1800 trikes today that have them, I am leaning to support the side that would see them be made illegal. It was somewhat confusing as they were headed towards as to whether they were an emergency vehicle or not till they we close enough to identify as trikes. I also noticed that people in cars were pulling over until they realized that it was motorcycles and not emergency vehicles. I have heard several talk about how cute it is to have cars pull over, but this could turn out to be very hazardous to everyone. So I guess what you will here me say is I am no longer on the fence. Put Sylvannia Silverstars on, use passing lamps, bright vest, ride with Caution, and number of different things. As for me if I were asked to vote the fate of the modulating headlight I would have to say NO! Disclaimer: This is an opinion and an opinion only, no animals were hurt while this opinion was formed, If you have an educated response I would love to hear it. P.S. the folks riding with the modulating headlights were wearing shorts and the passenger was wearing sandels.
  9. I have a 1989 Venture Royale. My trunk light and emergency flashers don't work. There was some questionable wiring in the trunk by the PO and probably blew the fuse. The schematic shows a fuse in line but I can't find any fuses blown. Is the emergency flasher fuse located somewhere other than the fuse panel?
  10. I am again wanting to do an attendance list of emergency numbers for folks coming to Asheville this year. Thankfully, we did not have to use the info for a crash situation, but it was used a couple of times to retrieve a bike that had a mechanical problem, and some coordinating of meet-ups. I would like to use this format so I can just do a cut & paste: It also helps if you keep it a simple font and no color. Your name(s), phone numbers, where staying, estimated arrival, emergency contact number with name or relationship. 11. Is there a way to rig the flashers on an RSV to operate without the key turned on? It seems to me that in an emergency, you'd want them to work even if the ignition is off. Help!
  12. Well, i have managed to change out the electrics (wiring harness and all) from the 86 to my 83. The bike cranks and runs fine, everything seems to be working so far Except for the headlight and the flashers, no hi beam, no low beam. no left right or emergency flashers. the emergency flasher switch is attached to the harness. Any ideas what may be wrong?..............................front park lights are on, and i tried another headlight with the same effect.
  13. How many hammock hangers do we have? I am talking about the camping type with rain fly, underquilts Etc. I have been hiking and camping using a hammock for several years and plan on never going back to the ground while camping except in emergency. My 50 year old back loves me for it. Bigest advantage is: it all fits in my saddlebag.
  14. I got out and rode some yesterday. Good thing, woke up about 6:15 to 3-4 inches of snow. Its 11:00 am now and we have around 6-7 inches and are expecting in our area about 18-24 inches by sunday. I guess New Jersey will call a stateof emergency. Our road guys are not used to seeing those snow totals here. I hope everyone has a great holiday and stay safe. Chris:rudolf:
  15. As of September 1 its now illegal in Texas to carry a child under the age of 5 on a motorcycle, UNLESS: The child is in a sidecar, OR its an emergency. The first offense ticket is $100. Big brother is watching! BTW...how is a cop supposed to know if a child is only 4 years and 10 months old unless you tell him??? ( hint hint ) And what defines an 'emergency'? I mean, maybe the little 3 year old is throwing a fit to go for a ride!!! Oh well...I dont have kiddos anyway....
  16. Ok first of all for those wondering about the water bill from last week. I got that taken care of. They do a special for leaks once a year. With any luck I won't have anymore leaks at all. Now for yesterday. Started off in the morning taking dog out for walk, kept feeling something like a hair by my ear. Tried pushing the hair away but still kept getting the same sensation. Well Turns out it wasn't a hair it was most likely a bug. Not sure what kind but it ended up in my left ear. Yeah I know don't ask how I have no idea. So yesterday I spent in the emergency room to get the darn thing out. Went to the one in Edenton because I've been to the other with someone else and spent 7 hrs there. I was there for a while maybe 45 mins got my vitals done then off to get the insurance stuff taken care of. Before I leave the nurse tells me 1 to 2 hrs most likely before I see the doc. Ok doen't sound bad if that's how long it takes. If you've ever spent any time in a hosptial emergency room you know what I mean. So after a little over 2 hrs I'm in the back waiting for the doc to come in. Now mind you this creature is in my ear for the whole time getting up the nerve to actually go to the hospital plus getting there and then waiting. So by now my ear really hurts. Doc get's out his light thing to look in my ear and says wow that's really far in there. So far doesn't sound good for me. So now we start the process of pulling the little bugger out. This is also really really painful. But I'm tough so no crying for me, but that pillow will never be the same. All he can get out is half the bug, yes I said half. Now comes the even more fun part of trying to flush the rest of it out of my ear. Talk about torture and it hurts too because my ear canal is extremely irritated as the doc tells me (wonder why). So he decides it's way too irritated to continue trying to get this thing out. I'm kinda relieved because my ear was hurting like hell at this point. He tells me I can come back in 3 days for him to get the rest out or try to make an appointment with the (mind the word the as in only one) ear nose throat guy in Elizabeth City. So I'm sitting here figuring if this is the only guy that does this he's gonna be really booked up. So I might as well head back to this doc he already knows what my ear looks like and knows I can handle the pain since they never give ya anything for this. He also gave me a prescription for these ear drops that are an anesthetic and something else. I'm hoping it makes what's left of this stupid bug really really easy to get out of my ear. I feel like my ears stuffed (which it is with the left over bug). Makes it kinda hard to hear out of too. So now I'm not sure I'm gonna make the meet in GA. I have no idea how long this is gonna take on thursday since I have to go back to the emergency room for this stuff. So I'll have to play that one by ear. Anyway I'm terrified of what next weeks gonna bring. I don't want to imagine what can happen because it seems if it's unusual and strange it's gonna happen to me. Margaret
  17. Warden and I were out taking care of some things last night. Around 4:00 PM we stopped at Rally's mainly because we had not eaten there. I didn't like the looks of the place when we walked in but we stayed. I had Burford Combo and the Warden had Mushroom and Swiss. Were not inpressed by them but ate them. Came home and about 2:30 in the morning my eyes popped open and I headed for the bathroom. One of those trips sitting down with trash can between knees. Things went downhill fast. Bloated up til I looked like I was 9 months and ready to pop. Suffered the rest of the night wondering if I was going to die!! Finally got loaded up and headed for Emergency Room. Wasn't driving son was driving. Got about 10 miles from hospital and started noticing change. We got to emergency room and turned around and came home. WE DIDN'T STOP AT RALL'YS!!! My stomach is still sore. Having a small bowl of chicken noodle and a grilled cheese tonight. Think I might Live!! My Black Cloud doing some more OT!!
  18. As most of you know calling 911 from your cell phone gets routed to the CHP in Vallejo. You may be able to save valuable time by calling the local emergency number in your area. the most current list is (hopefully) attached, and/or you could go to www.getice.com for that information. Looks like a "rainy day" project to store some of those numbers on the cell phone - heehee.
  19. For anyone who has an RSV and a shop manual, what is the emergency stop switch, where is it located on the bike, and what is its purpose? The early Royal Stars don't have this switch. The switch in question can be seen in the RSV shop manual on pages 8-76 to 8-80, or near the bottom left corner of page 481 of the Clymer's manual. This is not the engine stop switch on the right handlebar switchbox. This is something else. What in the world is it?
  20. Attached is a medical info form that we should all carry in case something happens to either yourself our passenger. This form can save a life Please use it.... :223: Here is a quote from an Ironbutt rider that was in a serious crash (He also happens to be Vice Admiral & Surgeon General for the US Navy). "I carry all my emergency personal and medical information in the left chest pocket of my Aerostich and have written “Emergency Info This Pocket” on the flap. The paramedics and hospital emergency staff said this helped them a lot, especially before I regained consciousness."
  21. I have ordered some samples and the DVD information concerning the products. I also ordered the training videos. In addition I am getting the information on the Emergency Pressure Dressing also known as an Israeli Dressing. I will have all of this available in a few weeks. I have space available for a website that I have never used. I think I will host some of this stuff there. If there is interest, I can try and put together an emergency first aid for motorcyclists type thing. I can also demonstrate some of these things at M&E's or rallies. JB
  22. Ontario drivers - attention (please pass on to everyone you know)... The applicable law is at the end of the e-mail. Section 159.1(2) applies to all four-lane highways and also applies wherever there is a passing lane. Please see message below. Hi Friends, I just had an experience which I hope you will share. I was driving on the 417 West at Panmure at broad daylight at 2 p.m., when I came upon two police cruisers who had pulled over a third vehicle. I slowed down to be cautious, and was surprised when the second cruiser pulled out and pulled me over. Approaching on the passenger side, the officer asked if I knew why I had been pulled over. I honestly expressed that I had no idea. He informed me that Ontario law now states that when approaching any emergency vehicle, on the roadside, with lights flashing, you must enter the left lane. He then proceeded to ticket me, giving three demerits and issuing a fine of , wait for it, . . . $490! (Yes, I'm choking as I type that.) I realize I did not change lanes, but I do believe I was cautious. My message is, be careful. He said that they are cracking down hard on this because of three injured officers in the last ten days. I did not realize this was the law. Neither did any of my recently-licensed children. Or, evidently, not the 47 drivers (I counted) who broke the same law as I sat waiting to receive my ticket! ___________________________________________________________________ Hi, For my part, I saw this happen today (Feb 24th) on Highway 69 South of Sudbury, on the passing lane on the Magnetewan flats. A cruiser was parked on the shoulder of the southbound lane with his lights flashing. He had no vehicle stopped, he was just parked there. I was northbound and reduced my speed, the extra lane was on the southbound side so, there were two lanes between me and the cruiser. A southbound motorist passed the cruiser without moving to the outer lane and the Officer immediately pulled out and gave chase to that driver. I saw him stopping him in my mirror before going over the next hill. The car did not appear to be speeding, in fact he seemed to slow, but failed to change lanes and was (presumably) stopped for that reason! Ted Read the actual Law below: Below is the the excerpt from the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. relating to this offence. It is under section 159.1 (1), (2), (3),(4),(5). Approaching stopped emergency vehicle 159.1 (1) Upon approaching an emergency vehicle with its lamp producing intermittent flashes of red light or red and blue light that is stopped on a highway, the driver of a vehicle travelling on the same side of the highway shall slow down and proceed with caution, having due regard for traffic on and the conditions of the highway and the weather, to ensure that the driver does not collide with the emergency vehicle or endanger any person outside of the emergency vehicle. 2002, c. 21, s. 1; 2007, c. 13, s. 20. Same (2) Upon approaching an emergency vehicle with its lamp producing intermittent flashes of red light that is stopped on a highway with two or more lanes of traffic on the same side of the highway as the side on which the emergency vehicle is stopped, the driver of a vehicle travelling in the same lane that the emergency vehicle is stopped in or in a lane that is adjacent to the emergency vehicle, in addition to slowing down and proceeding with caution as required by subsection (1), shall move into another lane if the movement can be made in safety. 2002, c. 21, s. 1. Same (3) Nothing in subsection (1) or (2) prevents a driver from stopping his or her vehicle and not passing the stopped emergency vehicle if stopping can be done in safety and is not otherwise prohibited by law. 2002, c. 21, s. 1. Offence (4) Every person who contravenes subsection (1) or (2) is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable, (a) for a first offence, to a fine of not less than $400 and not more than $2,000; and (b) for each subsequent offence, to a fine of not less than $1,000 and not more than $4,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than six months, or to both. 2002, c. 21, s. 1. Time limit for subsequent offence (5) An offence referred to in subsection (4) committed more than five years after a previous conviction for an offence referred to in subsection (4) is not a subsequent offence for the purpose of clause (4) (b). 2002, c. 21, s. 1 ____________________________________________________________________
  23. We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE." For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference! Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today! Please forward this. It won't take too many "forwards" before everybody will know about thisIt really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest . ICE will speak for you when you are not able to.
  24. :detective:I am following up on the thread I started a week ago and here are the results I promised to report. 13 rear brake lock ups were reported, 12 of those were due to emergency stops, and 4 of those 12 reulted in an accident and the bike going down. That is a 33% probability of crashing when using the rear brake in an emergency. That to me is pretty alarming. Almost all of the riders that locked up their rear brake felt that it was way too easy to lock up. One person brought up the point that the harder you stop, your right foot will press more on the rear brake due to the G forces generated in severe braking and weight transfer that takes place from rear to front. You have two forces working against you. 1. you moving forward on the bike, pressing on the rear pedal more and 2. weight coming off of the rear wheel. My opinion is that it is a freaking miracle more of us don't crash when making an emergency stop, even when using the front and rear brakes properly. I suspect that this problem is not unique to just the Royal Star series of bikes. I suspect that with HD making ABS avaiable as an option more manufacturers will be under more pressure to improve the brakes on our motorcycles. I certainly hope this will be the case.
  25. The bike just died, Jeff is trying to help any buddy else want in. Head light, dash, tail, turn work. Jumped starter relay starter worked. will check kick stand, kill switch and emergency and starter relays. any other ideas. Did 600 M trip to WV ran fine , Thanks Dale
