  1. I'm brand new to this site and would love some input. I was in a hurry last night and was attempting to change my passing lamps from the standard bulbs to LED's. Well, I started disconnecting and connecting the new lights WITHOUT disconnecting the battery.....well long story short I shorted out my headlight fuse, replaced that fuse got the headlight working again.....but the passing lamps still won't work at all. I'm wondering if there is an inline fuse maybe hidden somewhere? I have a 2009 Venture S with the factory passing lamp setup. The LED's did work briefly before stopping....now the old lights won't work either so I've eliminated the lights being defective. I've checked all the main fuses and they appear to be working now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
  2. Hi everyone, I've got a 1978 xs750se and after replacing a bad regulator rectifier with a ESR310 from electrosport.com**, I noticed the headlight stopped working. I put a multimeter in the connectors of the headlamp wiring plug and both low beam and high beam are registering 16-17 volts at idle and upwards of 28-30volts when throttle is given. I imagine that this blew the headlight. All the other lights, turn signals function properly still. Think this could be a bad (new) regulator rectifier or there's a wiring issue somewhere along the way? Thanks for your help! It's brutal not riding because of not having a functioning headlight. I've contacted electrosport to inquire about the issue and a possible bad RR but would love your input as well. Thanks.
  3. I just replaced the wiring harness on my 83. I seem to have no brake lights but all my other lights are working. According to the wiring diagram this should mean I have power to the circuit. Any thoughts? The fuses are all good also. Neither brake switch is working.
  4. I want to thank you in advance for any and all help. I recently purchased an '08 RSV with stock audio. I replaced the front speakers with Alpine 3way 4" speakers because one of the stock speakers was blown. I have 2 issues; 1) last week I lost the volume. Everything powers up and if I turn the volume all the way up I can barely hear it if the bike isnt running. Is the an amp or pre-amp that I need to fix/replace. Where should I start to look for the problem? 2) I would like to upgrade the sound system. Whats the best way to go with this? I've read some older posts about adding an amp under the faring. But on further research they were on the older bikes. Please help.
  5. I am in the process of installing cruise control on my 1983 Venture Standard. I have purchased almost all of the items I need to do this upgrade from ebay. Prior to installing the parts, I will be disassembling the ones that I can and cleaning them. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the clutch side switch housing that came off of a 1988 Venture. The pictures show the switch completely removed from the bike. It is fairly lengthy, 47 pictures, but thorough. I would recommend removing switch from bike if you perform this cleaning. There are a number of small springs and ball detents that are very easy to lose unless you have a large well lit working area. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the throttle side switch in another thread. Picture below is of the switch detailed in this PDF file.
  6. Yesterday after mowing my yard, I thought I'd take a short ride and cool off. I hadn't had a chance to ride my '83 VR in a few days so I dicided to take it instead of my 1100. After about 20 miles, I was getting ready to head home. I was going to stop and fill up with gas before I went home. I showed 84 miles on that tank of gas and my fuel gauge showed 2 bars. About a mile from the store I was going to stop at to full up, I notice the bike slowing down. I gave it some throtle and nothing happened. I pulled off the side of the road. I tried to start it again but no luck. I checked to make sure I hadn't hit the kill switch and it was on. Everything electrical seemed to be working and it turned over fine. The only thing I could think of was that it was out of gas. I called a friend and he brought me a gallon of gas. After pouring it in, I cranked on it for a couple of minutes and it started. When I stopped to put gas in, it only held 1.9 gals. So I know it hadn't run out of gas. I rode the rest of the way home, about 10 miles and everything seemed fine. I really don't know what happened. I don't think it was an electrical problem because as I was trying to start it, it sounded like it would after running out of gas. It would try to hit severl times until it finally picked up the fuel and started. Is it possible that I had some trash in the tank that plugged the fuel pick-up?
  7. if you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
  8. Just wondering, it was previously discussed in a prior thread on stator and rectifier problems that the 2006 through current model has the highest output stator, equal to the upgraded models that are available as replacements. If that is so, they recommend that the wires be hard wired.Would cleaning and dialectric grease help prevent the bad connections that happen in these areas or would it somehow make it worse? I'm not having any problems right now, but was trying to do some preventative maintenance and save some time and money down the road. I don't want to have to hardwire until it is necessary. Also, what are some thoughts on replacing just the rectifier to one like SkyDoc17 sells. It is supposed to be better.but I'm not to good on electrical, and wish some one could explain it as simple as possible so hopefully I understand. If it would help,I would replace the original to get the most out of the system.Any thoughts or experience on this would be greatly appreciated
  9. I have a 1984 Venture with the 1200cc engine on it (locked up), will a 1985 1300cc mount up to my 1984 frame and swing drive arm? Also will the electrical plug in as well or will I have to do mods to make it work. Thanks any help and or pictures would be appreciated.
  10. My headlight has lost it's brightness. At first it was only on the dim side now both high and low beams are not working correctly. THe headlight indicator on the dash is lit also. When this first started happening I could reach in and move the wires behind the headlight and it would work now nothing. I can not see any broken or frayed wires. THere are many things I can do but electrical is not high on that list. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  11. First, This is my first post to Venture Riders. This looks like a great place to be if you ride a Venture or Royal Star. Secondly, I would like to apologize; this post will be a bit long. I have an electrical problem that has me baffled. I have a 1997 RSTD, 31280 miles. Bike runs great, very comfortable, love the look. But it developed an electrical issue. Riding along, the bike died. Other electrical items remain on. Turn the key off then back on, it started right back up. This condition was very random; it may be fine for the rest of the ride or it may die again in an hour or it may die in a mile. After research I believed it was the ignition switch. Everything I read, heard or saw indicated the switch was bad. Since the Yamaha switch ws so expensive, I decided to use a generic switch and duplicate the switch circuit; one hot wire in and 3 power wires out. I built the circuit, replaced the switch, spliced in the wires. Turned the key, had lights, turn signal, horn, CB, fuel pump etc. Hit the starter button, nothing. Pulled in the clutch, nothing. Raised the kickstand, blew the main fuse. Aha, the kick stand switch. Jumped the switch, put in a new fuse, turned the key and blew the main fuse again. Pulled the starter cut out relay, and reading the service manual checked the continuity across the blue/yellow pin and the sky blue pin. The relay appears not to have continuity. There is infinite resistance showing on my meter in both directions. I believe the relay is bad. So is the relay bad and it caused the issue, or is it bad because of the ignition switch issue. OR is the kickstand switch bad and it caused both the stalling problem and the possible dead relay? Again, sorry for the long first post. Thanks in advance for any advice, I really appreciate any help John
  12. I just upgraded from a 2005 V Star 650 Classic to a 1999 Royal Star Venture 1300. I'm a little dismayed though, it had major electrical issues hidden under the seat and now I am in the process of replacing the wiring harness. I'll probably be posting lots of questions around this as I go forward. One newbie question. What's the difference between 1st Generation and 2nd Generation Ventures?
  13. So me and the misses are coming home at dusk and I notice my running lights are not on....Headlight, Tail and Running lights...Brake and Turn are OK... A couple of week ago I wired for a trailer behind the tail light....SOOOOOOOO] Pulled into driveway....Checked the 15amp fuse and it was gone....replaced and all is well...Running lights work again....Got on the beast to move it into the garage and I have to run up on a slightly elevated concrete edge....When I bounced over it..OUT GOES THE RUNNING lights again...by this time its. dark... My though is that my connection in the taillight must have worked loose and it is shorting our....I'll check tomorrow PM after I get home from work. Question..Does this make "electrical guru" sense? Note: Leaving on first long distance trip the first of Sept and HOPE this is all it is.... Long Tall Lynchburg, VA

  15. "Yamaha Motor Corp. is recalling certain FJR 1300s due to defects in the vehicles’ electrical systems. The potential number of vehicles affected is 9,850. FJR 1300s manufactured from February 2006 through March 2009 could have potential issues with ground joint connectors. The company says that the ground joint connector of the wire harness can overheat, become deformed, and possibly lead to malfunctioning ignition systems and other electrical components. Yamaha dealers are being asked to install an additional wire sub-lead or install a new main wire harness free of charge. For more information, call Yamaha at 800-962-7926." Rut row. Not good.
  16. Seems like a lot of Venture/Tour deluxe riders also own a FJR... Thought I would share this with you..... This has been know as "the spider bite" Also there is one coming for the 2011 FJR Just got this notice................ Intent to Recall 2006~2009 FJR13A/AE Models Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in 2006~2009 FJR13A/AE model motorcycles. In affected motorcycles, the ground joint connector of the wire harness could overheat and become deformed, possibly causing an intermittent ground wire connection. If the electrical system is not properly grounded, the ignition system and/or other electrical components could malfunction, which could cause the engine to stall. If this happens while the motorcycle is being ridden, there could be a crash resulting in injury or death. Yamaha intends to recall these motorcycles for a modification of the electrical system. A Technical Bulletin with all necessary information will be provided in the near future. Until then, please suspend sale of any 2006~2009 FJR13A/AE motorcycles in your inventory. As with all safety recall campaigns, Yamaha will be notifying all registered owners of affected units by mail. Will have more details as they make them available.
  17. A friend of mine has a 84 Venture that he has an electrical problem with. His battery died so he bought a new one and everything was fine. He left the key on and killed the new battery.....this is when the problem started....he decided to boost it with his truck and while the cables were hooked to the truck his helper struck the handle bar with the positive cable....the negative was hooked to the battery and the key was turned on. Now everything works....lights - horn etc but the starter won't engage....no offer at all. He has checked all the fuses and all appears fine. Sooooooooo any ideas? Keith
  18. I Know I have seen custom harleys and choppers with all the controls and hoses hidden inside the bars . Does anyone know how that works or how involved that is. is it possible. Even if its only throttle and electrical and leave the hoses alone.I want to see more of the bar and less clutter.
  19. Went for a ride on Sat, and shut the bike down when I got home to the driveway. Opened the garage door and started the bike to pull it in. Got the bike in place, shut it down and then immediately tried to re-start it. I got a series of clicks and then all the electical shut down. No headlights, no spedo display, nothing. Waited ~20 seconds trying to think what the issue was, and then, all the electrical (including headlights) came back on. Trying to start it at that point, once again gave me the clicking noises and an electrical shut down. Waited another 20 seconds and once again, all the electrical returned (including headlights). I have passing lamps on the bikes and a Stebel air horn with a relay. No other electrical mods. Any ideas on what the issue may be? The dealer replaced the battery when I bought it the bike used in 2009. Claims he put a new battery in it, which would make this the 3rd season on the battery. I run ~10k miles a year, mostly in 1hr rides. I searched the forum for similar posts, but didn't find anything relating these specific symptoms. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions. Heading to Americade in 2 weeks, would like to get this issue resolved ASAP. Bob
  20. I have a 2005 Royal Star Venture. There were 2 times yesterday when I turned the bike on, my radio, my clock, and my trip odometers were all reset. Is this indicative of a battery going bad, or may I have some other kind of electrical problem? I bought the bike used about 14 months ago, and not sure how old the battery is. Thanks.
  21. Spent the day cleaning up the electrical connections under the seat. Over the past two years I have added plenty of electrical items to the bike and just 'hacked' them in using crimp splices and such. I was having an intermittent failure with the brake lights so I figured now was a good time to do it. No 'before' photo because it was just too embarrassing but here is an 'after' photo. Also put in a new battery. http://gallery.me.com/k1oj/100024/IMG_2312/web.jpg?ver=13018627720001
  22. I have som troubles that is electrical related. First problem was that the clock turned off with the ignition and that the turn signals sometimes failed to work. I did find corrosion in a connector behind the front lamp and after some cleaning these problems disapeared:cool10:. Now does the revcounter is showing to little and is sagging (reacting very slow to canges) . I assume that I should search for more faulty connectors, or ? The fuel meter did play me a trick today; suddely the level sank like a stone and the warning light started to blink. After a couple of minutes the meter rose and all was well again:080402gudl_prv:. And, non electrical; the speedometer shows a bit to little (not so important), have compared with my sons Z1000J and also by judjing from the rate at wich I pass cars... But the odo and the trip is stuck! I Had a similar problem with my Yamaha TT600; fixed it by splitting the meter and lubing very gentle with WD40 at the right places (oxide/rust). Is it difficult to split the speedometer on a XVZ1200?
  23. I know this subject has come up before but I'm bothered that all it took to drain the battery was a heated vest. Have heard the the RSV doesn't have the most robust electrical system. I was in Daytona and saw a vendor selling LED running and headlights. Unfortunately can't find name (I thought I took a card) and it may have been only harley specific. Anyway, other discusions here about LED driving or headlights have talked about interference with radio or CB. This guy said he's never heard of that with his LED lights. They were not cheap - at least 400 bucks for a pair of driving lights but might be worth it to reduce the electrical draw and make a heated vest or jacket practical. Anyone know of LED driving lights out there that would fit the RSV and not interfere with radio?
  24. Okay so my buddies girlfriends ran into and/or over his bike, he gave it to me to fix and keep for myself. I have no idea where to even start with it. Its a 1985 (I think) venture. He didn't take very good care of it and when he put a new stereo in it he really rigged it and cut a lot of wires. Anyone know where I can find a good electrical plan for this bike for free? Any help would be greatly appreciated
  25. Struggling with a little electrical issue and could use some help. I'll give you the background. 1) Noticed that the trip meter would be at zero after I left the bike for a few days between riding. 2) Riding down the road and the dashboard (speedometer, odometer, trip meter) was not on. 3) Shut off the bike and tried to start the bike and the electrical dashboard was erratic and wouldn't start. Turned key back and forth. Turned kill switch back and forth. Light would come on. When I pressed the start button the dash would turn off. Then suddenly the bike started. 4) Drove bike home several hours and shut off and no issues. 5) Took off later that day and no issues. Turned bike off for breif period and tried to turn back on and same issues as #3. Finally started and drove home. NOTE: I did have some electrical work done a couple months on. Rewired riding lights and some rear lights. The gentleman that did the work was quite competent I believe. Appreciate any thoughts you might have. Thanks, Bob
