  1. I am getting my '87 ready to roll and I've decided to do all the electronics different than stock, so I will be removing CB, cables, cassette/radio, amplifier, rear CB control unit. I didn't have the helmet units to make the intercom work and I don't care to mess with trying to make the factory set up work. I don't know what this stuff is worth but reading other threads I understand it goes for a fair amount on fleabay. But since you all are in the club I am offering it to all of you. Make me a fair offer on what you need and I'm sure we can come to terms. Email works great for me: deanmay at pianorebuilders dot com. Or you can phone/text me at Eight onetwo 235 five2seven2. my plastic dash on the right side is all busted so the air suspension controller just dangles. It doesn't seem to work, either, though I do get a display. Has anyone made an aftermarket controller work? Thx, Dean
  2. No, not the hard way, I just did that but as a result I really should replace my helmet, so I'm thinking helmets are tested to see if they meet DOT standards, but how much more can they handle? I realize there is a point where it doesn't matter how strong the helmet is, 'cause you're going to be dead. A $60 helmet and a $600 helmet both meet DOT standards, all I've found so far is that the more expensive helmet is going to be quieter, more comfortable and may (or may not) fit better. Someone who wears a helmet when he/she has to to cross state lines for a couple of hours will buy the cheapo one, I'm more interested in protecting my noggin best I can, so is there a study which actually compares fail values for various helmets so that you can see whether you pay for the name, or if a specific helmets actually has better protection value along with comfort and fit. :scratchchin: Oh, I'm thinking a modular if it will allow me to put it on and take it of without having to remove my glasses (titanium frame)
  3. Ride a 2007 RSTD. I want to lower the height of the stock brake pedal. This means I want the existing brake pedal rubber to be about 2 inches lower than stock. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thanks, please email me your response at fubar dot kiss at gmail dot com.
  4. I found a Prestone synthetic DOT 4 it says it is good for DOT 3 & 4 applications. Is this a good fluid for our Gen 2 bikes? Thanks for all your help.
  5. Anyone know DOT regs for side marker lights on trailers? Do they have to be running lights? I was checking it out on my trailer this past weekend because they weren't lighting up and I thought they might be broken. Ends up they only light up when I hit the brake.
  6. Thought this might be of interest to everyone here...........I found it very helpful. DOT 5 Brake Fluids After paying a small mint for the paint job on my restored Norton, I started considering ways to preserve and protect it. Chief among my concerns was brake fluid. I had once spilled regular brake fluid on my toolbox, and a week later it was sporting a huge corroded area with blistered paint. So after hearing about DOT 5 Silicone brake fluid I investigated. If you have similar concerns, DOT 5 Silicone might be of interest to you as well. Silicone based DOT 5 brake fluid was originally developed for racing, but has several attractive qualities for use on classic bikes with hydraulic brake systems. These are: • DOT 5 Silicone does not attract water. Lack of moisture absorption minimizes corrosion of internal components for better sealing, longer component life, and less maintenance. On the other hand, regular brake fluids are hygroscopic, and readily absorb water from the air and other sources. Therefore, motorcycle brake systems using DOT 3 and 4 ought to have their fluids changed regularly to prevent problems. The maximum life of DOT 3 or 4 is 5 years. • DOT 5 Silicone will not affect plastic or painted surfaces, and is non-toxic, non-corrosive and nonirritating. With glycol based brake fluids, like DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1, care must be used to thoroughly wash it thoroughly from skin and all painted surfaces. • DOT 5 Silicone offers superior lubrication of master cylinder and caliper pistons preventing abrasion between the sealing cups and pistons that can take place under racing conditions. In street use, this could result in nearly zero component wear. • DOT 5 Silicone has a very high boiling point that eliminates brake fade. Although it is no longer the preferred brake fluid for racing, it is more than adequate for street use. Things You Should Know As with any product there are several trade-offs to consider before rushing out and converting every vehicle you own: Silicone fluids are not miscible with water. It’s the classic oil and vinegar scenario. DOT 5 Silicone, being less dense, tends to float on water. Therefore, if water ever entered the system it would collect at the lowest point, meaning the bottom of the caliper. Water in the bottom of the caliper could be hard to get out without removing the caliper and rotating the caliper to place the bleed nipple at the lowest point. While it’s permissible to mix DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 brake fluids, DOT 5 Silicone fluid cannot be mixed with any other type. If the system is not completely purged before conversion, the mixture may gel and result in very poor braking. Therefore conversion usually requires disassembly and a thorough cleaning, or at least numerous bleeding sessions over several days. Obviously then, the best time to consider conversion to DOT 5 is before rebuilding the master cylinder or caliper. Copyright RF Whatley, Suwanee, GA 2 Written June 04, Revised June 08 Because DOT 5 Silicone cannot be mixed with any other brake fluid it has been given a special purple color. Any owner or mechanic seeing the special purple color should instantly recognize that the fluid in the reservoir is not normal brake fluid. There are actually two types of DOT 5 fluids. There is a SBBF (Silicone Based Brake Fluid) and a DOT 5.1 NSBF (Non-Silicone Based Fluid). For several years DOT 5.1 was not available to the general public and there was a very low chance of getting the two confused with each other. However, the latest generation of motorcycles is now using DOT 5.1 and it is becoming more commonplace. Be aware that DOT 5.1 has the same base chemistry as DOT 3 and DOT 4 and therefore does NOT offer the advantages of DOT 5 Silicone. Another point of confusion is that most people assume that since DOT 5.1 has a higher number it must therefore be better. This is simply not true. DOT 5.1 was formulated for use in ABS systems that require a less viscous fluid. From the information I was able to gather it seems that most road racers are now relying on the latest generation of DOT 4 brake fluid, along with regular fluid replacement, for the ultimate in hydraulic brake system performance. So we may conclude that DOT 5.1 is not an improvement, but a modification for ABS use. DOT 5 Silicone brake fluids are not generally available in Europe. If your Italian or German motorcycle brake reservoir is marked “Use DOT 5” they are generally talking about DOT 5.1, which is not a silicone brake fluid. They do this because your bike is probably equipped with ABS and DOT 5.1 is the preferred brake fluid for ABS systems. The easiest source for DOT 5 Silicone brake fluid in the USA is your nearest Harley- Davidson shop. DOT 5 Silicone is specified as the brake fluid of choice for use in all HDs. And of course when working with any brake fluid, proper personal protection should be worn, don’t mix brake fluids from different containers, and be sure and follow the safety precautions on the label. Summation Although your bike shop may try to talk you out of buying DOT 5 Silicone, realize that this is because new bikes on their showroom probably specify something else. However, you should buy and use the brake fluid that is best for YOUR motorcycle. If effective braking, low maintenance and protecting your paint job are your priorities then DOT 5 Silicone should be considered. 7. I have read allot of threads on here about helmets , and not too much talk about helmet ratings. if you wear a dot helmet you are not really very well protected ! I have even seen allot of helmets being sold at bike swap meets and a dot sticker given to you to sick it on the back of the helmet. thats great if you want to wear a 10.00 helmet but you can expect your brains to be sweep up off the pavement with your bike if you go down hard. I say if you have a 10.00 head ware a 10.00 helmet . if you really want to be safe look for a helmet with a Snell rating. see this article for the reasons. Snell Vs. Dot DOT sets minimum standards for helmets, The Snell Memorial Foundation is a private not-for-profit organization that sets voluntary standards for motorcycle helmets, bicycle helmets and auto racing helmets, as well as other kinds of protective headgear. Snell standards are the world's toughest. wearing a dot helmet is like being covered by government health care , do your really want to trust your brain to the government ? so if you decide to wear a helmet at the very least make an educated decision and get a good one. your family may thank you later, if god forbid you ever go down. "I still believe in freedom and cant stand being told what i can and cant do (especially by the government) but remember a government powerful enough to give you every thing you need also has the power to take it away !"
  8. I replaced front disc pads - and naturally, front brake lever has no resistance whatsoever now. I'm reading out here about "reverse bleeding" using a syringe or something - I take I'm supposed to remove bleeder valve, and squirt dot 3 into the opening with a syringe or something similar. Does that sound right? I'm assuming dot 3 will eventually overflow out...then what? Put bleeder valve back on and see if pressure builds up? Or try bleeding it normally? Reservoir on handlebar is full. I wanted to change out rear pads, but my saddlebag on that side does not want to come off and I don't want to force it. It's almost as if the key lock isnt working right. Doesnt seem to be enough room to pull that caliper off with saddle bag on. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
  9. Does it make a difference? Went to get DOT 3 and could only find DOT 4. I was told they were the same. Is this true? Which should I use for a 2005 RSV? Thanks, Jim
  10. I found a set of Halogen 35 watt driving lights on EBay listed at $19.95 buy it now with $7.20 shipping and figured what the heck for less then $30.00 give it a shot. Well the site said nothing about being DOT approved but they are and they went in with very little work. I had the change 1 end of the OEM wiring to a spade socket slip some tubing over it and I was done. They are marked with a "top" in the lens and a small tip in the lens at the bottom for the split in the clamping ring. They are also marked DOT with the DOT code on the lens. These are not sealed beams but lens with replaceable H3 bulbs. The guy has one pair listed right now and I did notice that when I purchased mine the next day another set was offered. Now this is for a pair not each and I had them in less then a week. http://motors.shop.ebay.com/merchant/hwsolando_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZ
  11. Is DOT 5 an option for the 2ndG RSV? It is time to flush the brakes.
  12. What's the difference between the gold and blue dot R1/R6 calipers??? Any difference beside the color???
  13. Was pulled over by the law yesterday for a helmet violation.... Now mind you that DE doesn't require one to use a brain bucket, but I wear one anyway. Having said that you are wondering if I was in De at the time or why would the LAW pull me over is a bucket is not required and I'm wearing one...All great questions. Here goes the explanation: The LAWMAN says that you don’t need to wear a bucket in DE but if you do then it must have a DOT sticker on it. So I say “if you don’t need to wear a bucket in DE and you see someone riding down the street with a baseball cap on would you pull him over and tell him he needs to have a DOT sticker on it? He let me go with a warning, if I was to ride into MD or some other state that requires a bucket then my brain bucket would not be legal because it’s been painted and the DOT sticker is gone. Now what do you think of that?
  14. I live in NC and was told the HID H4 headlight and the led cluster turn signals are not DOT approved.Does this mean they are illegal and a LEO will pull you over? Why would they be illegal for bikes but not cars?
  15. My apologies if this has been posted. If this is a dead horse then it can be deleted. The following ran in last Thursday's USAToday http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-11-01-motorcycledeaths_N.htm?csp=34 Excerpt: Helmet laws have been repealed or modified in many states, however, and the DOT's new effort does not call for new helmet laws. Instead, the initiative focuses on: •Training. DOT will develop national standards for entry-level motorcycle riders to achieve what Peters calls "a baseline of competency." •Enforcement. DOT will create a training program to teach police officers about specific efforts to reduce crashes. •Education. Public service announcements will feature Peters on the importance of helmets and other protective gear. A "Share the Road" campaign will remind drivers to be alert for motorcyclists.. I think the training is excellent. I think too many people ride who are not qualified to ride. Education of the cager - much needed though I'm not real optimistic about it's impact. Your thoughts???
  16. Isn't there supposed to be a dot on the side of a tire indicating the light side of the tire that is supposed to be put next to the valve stem? I just ordered some Avons through SWMoto and they don't have any such dot. Now what? How should these be mounted?
