Can anyone tell me if and how much the cv slides should bounce while the engine is running? If I blip the throttle just a bit, they move quite a bit. Does this indicate a problem? Starting to take the carbs out and apart and man they are dirty!

Playin' catchup on my 87 Standard....it's been going on for a couple of weeks now, (not much free time to work on it) and I'm getting ready to sync the carbs, but was hoping for some info on the procedure. I figured there'd be an old post with instructions but can't seem to find it. If anyone has a link, or can give me the quick and dirty on it, lemme know. Thanks.

I'm a newb, just wanted to say thanks to y'all already for the tremendous help this site has been before and after recently purchasing my 99 Venture. I'm in love with this bike. Still have a few things to work out and figure out, but I'm a tinkerer, and not shy about getting my hands dirty. I'm in the process of fighting the baffles out of my Bubs (full length) with PB Blaster at work in the garage I came in to search for some tips on here. Thanks again!! And, Yes, I'll post some pics soon.

Well with a little help from a co-worker and new VR member, K-Rider, we finally got the motor out of the frame on my 83, and the write up in the tech section was a big help. After we got it out sprayed the lower frame and the motor with de-greaser used the pressure washer to get all that 29 year old grease of the frame and motor, I couldnt believe how much grease had built up on the parts of the engine I couldnt see..........it will make disassemble of the motor a not so dirty job.

As some of you know that I am in the middle of a HO Stator up-grade and today I was prepping the Stator Wires to Solder, But my thought was why did Yamaha place this Connetor in the most DIRTY Weatherd, Oily, Messy Spot on the bike ?.. I just can not get over how much grime and dirt was ON and IN the Connector when I cut it off. There is no way I would ever put a conneter back into that spot agian... If I knew this in the past I would have already got rid of the connector on the stock stator and hard wired it. what a MESS. This has to wreck havic on the charging system I would think. maybe Goose can chime in about this? I also am replacing the R/R as well and that connect was also very dirty. not as bad though. Jeff

Hi All Ive been trying to what on this. But I have to tell all of you. As some of you know Ive been looking for a new bike for some time now not brand new just newer. Well some of you may recall Christy and I showed up at Big Toms rally on my brother in laws 2002 goldwing. I took some ribbing about it well get set to do it again. I now own a 1988 goldwing there I said it yes a goldwing. Christy and I had a long talk about this and we are just more comfortble on the wing. I still like the venture but this was a great deal so it was hard to pass up. I got the wing for 2000.00 dollars and it needed to to be cleaned up very dirty really dirty. But the rest of the bike ran fine and evrything worked like it was new. As soon as I get it cleaned up Ill put some pics up. I hope Big Tom lets me ride out to ohio with him this year. Bull463

After flushing out my clutch oil today because it was 'dark' in the sight glass, I notice it's still 'dark' in the sight glass after all fresh new DOT 4 went into the system.. The brake reservoir sight glass shows bright oil but the clutch is still showing dark oil.. Is this due to a dirty sight glass and can it be cleaned? Cheers

Hello from Ohio Oil sight glass dirty, dealer said it's from wrong oil already replaced all clutch componets, unable to tell how much oil is in crankcase,is there any easy way to clean glass or do I have to replace it as dealer said,if so can it be reached through oil pan? when i got my 1984 venture from my father in law. he told me not to choke it or the plugs would fowl almost instantly. i am quite sure this is because it is running to rich. this could be caused by dirty carbs correct? jets maybe. Also when idling it mifires every 5 or so seconds out of the left exhaust could this be because of dirty carbs too? it runs perfect when your riding and come to a stop idles good. so im just wondering where i go now i need my choke i dont like taking the tank cover off and sprayin panther piss in to get it started when its cold lol also what is the exact process of taking the carbs off i know take the side fairings off and filter box but does it have intakes u just unbolt or what? i want to leave them all togather thanks

You remember I got a "New" 1st Gen not long ago and been trying to find time to get carbs off and clean them to get it running. Bike shows 22k and owner swore that was right. Lot of goodies on it and needs cleaned badly. i finally got a little time to pull carbs today. He claimed it had never sat outside was in heated garage all its life. 25 yrs!! when I pulled carbs every thing I got to was stuck. Crud on carbs and bottom of air box was hard to believe. Bike does look good but makes me wonder where all that came from. And plugs are gone so someone has been in carbs. They are so dirty I'm thinking of swapping with "Blue Beast" I don't know of any place that soaks the things any more. Something wrong with that being that dirty. Might be 122k. I hope not and it sounds too good what few seconds I could get it to run priming it. I'll keep everyone posted. Carbs off the "Blue Beast"??? Hate to take that engine apart. Parts bike runs too good to take things from. i need another 1st Gen. Never have too many. Didn't mean to write book just thinking out loud and know there are a few wondering about the scoot.
