So, I finally got out to do an oil change on my Sear's mower since I put it away last month. Couldn't find the oil drain so I broke down and checked the owner's manual. Yikes!!! You have to remove the dipstick and then...get this...turn the mower over to get the oil to pour out the fill tube! Oh...and it says to move it around to get all the oil out! That may be fine with some people, but Arnold Whatsisname I am not. What kind of dipstick (Pun intentional, sorry!) would design a motor that way? Could you imagine having to flip your bike upside down to drain the oil? Or any other fluid? Of course, my Sear's snow blower has a drain tube. But...it's just short enough that it drains onto the edge of the drain pan unless you lift the front and hold it there till it's done! Geez!! What were they thinking? Or were they thinking? Oh well, it's done and I feel better after my rant. Next is the bike oil change (Two of them) since I've finally had to put them away...too much salt on the roads around here already. Andy

for my 87 venture and i found this: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh131/seuadr/P1030757.jpg I gather its a dipstick, but.. for what? is it for the final drive? -
so i found an 86 on CL for $850, waited a few weeks(no $) and then finally emailed to find the bottom line. $400, i jump on it, hasnt been tagged since 99 , sitting in a barn auctioned off to raise $ for the deceased, so the story goes, the guy who i bought it from fiddled with it and got it to fire up but not really run. tank is unbelievably rusty,so i pull it all out, workin towards the carbs, and i turn her over to see the diaphrams move and she fires right up! lookin up!!! she belches smoke and is HEMORAGHING oil, but i do the right thing and let it warm, drain the oil to put in new and notice " hey thats alot of oil!" couldnt help myself, i had to find out....71/2 QUARTS!!! HOW DID IT EVEN RUN? so whos the dipstick? the dude for dumping in the oil, or me for not doing such a simple thing as an oil change immediatly and assuming this guy knew anything about mechanics.Im still shaking my head...71/2 quarts

Incase anybody is interested, I have some pics of a dipstick with the dimensions. You know...just incase somebody wants to make an accurate one for themselves. I hope these help.

I have some shims for my 78 XS-750 and believe they are 29mm across and was wondering what the diameter is for the Venture. There are, of course, some large similarities between the two bikes... and the 750 even came with the plastic "dipstick" for checking the pumpkin oil level. I always thought it was cute... because after several years I found the oil level was fine, if it WAS low, was due to my using the dipstick! Routine oil change was always clean and clear. These are some tough bikes. And yeah, it had the same "soft thrust washer" that could cause 2nd gear problems like the early 1st Gen bikes.
