So I get my LEDs, get the load resistors installed, and now the polarity of the light socket is wrong. I got no running light and a dim blinker, reverse the bulb and Ii get the dim running light. I would like to pull the wires from the plug and reverse them, I know there is a little tongue in there that won't let the terminal come out the back of the plug housing, it works much like a wire tie locking mechanism, I'm SURE there is a $85.00 tool that will pop right in there and do what I need done, I'd rather cut wire and re-solder than spend that kind of money on this. Paper clip is too big, my 1.4mm precision screw driver is too big but will slip in along side the terminal end. So If I reverse the wires (one way or the other) what will (if anything) happen at the rear blinker? I don't think anything will... I'm just askin'. Any ideas?

I have been chasing this problem for way too long. So before I have this bike sent to a salvage yard, I am going to reach out to the experts. Problem - low beam is way to dim. 1. Bulb has tested good. 2. Dimmer switch replaced and is good as well as clean. 3. Not real sure how to check the reserve lighting unit but I have three of them and same symptom with all three. This pretty much eliminates a bad RLU. 4. I also removed the CMU to check for a faulty solder point and could not identify any but re-soldered the plug solder points anyway. Reinstalled - dim low beam still. Since I had another complete dash unit, I checked the replacement dash and found no issues and installed that one. Still a dim low beam. High beam is as bright as it should be, just a dim low beam. Battery is 12.6. How should I proceed from here? I'd hate to part this thing out; it runs just too good to do that. Thanks in advance for your help. herb

Hey all, Happy Holidays! I rolled the dice on an instrument cluster on fleabay. I needed to replace the monitor in mine as the edges of the glass had what looked like black ink creeping in. I suspect this is an LCD pane and it's in an on-going fail mode. It's always a crapshoot buying stuff this way unless they post of vid of the running bike, which this one didn't. So if it didn't work I'm not out a lot of dough. Well, the new pane works, but it's very dim. I'm thinking it sat in the sun a long time and dulled the pane. So anyone know a trick to bring it back bright and visible again? The clock is from the old unit, the new one was too dim to see. The last pic is the old monitor. In daylight the display is very hard to see. It's getting dark here, plus it's rainy so no outside daylight pics available. But you can see the diff between the upper and lower displays. Any way to make it brighter?

My headlight has lost it's brightness. At first it was only on the dim side now both high and low beams are not working correctly. THe headlight indicator on the dash is lit also. When this first started happening I could reach in and move the wires behind the headlight and it would work now nothing. I can not see any broken or frayed wires. THere are many things I can do but electrical is not high on that list. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Once again I am faced with dreaded electrical issues. After successfully upgrading my fuse box (Thanks Skydoc and GeorgeS) I was feeling confident to tear apart the dash and replace all dash light bulbs and solder CMU (in way over my head with the CMU now) anyway I notice some of the bulbs are very dim and burn for a bit when key is first turn on but then flicker out. I have turned the dimmer knob up and down and although it does affect the bulbs that are lit normal it does not affect the dim lit bulbs. I would think if there was a bad ground all the bulbs would be affected, but I am far from knowing electrical issues. On a side note, anyone know of a good soldering person here in WA state? I have CMU out and apart but I am not sure I see any issues. But the battery light jumper wire MOD is not working and the gear indicator will go in and out on occasion. But other than those two issues the digital display works fine. http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/ac264/bobandlou3/Dash_Bulb.jpg

Got my LED Driving Lights in today from www.greenboatstuff.com and I can say they are bright. Now I guess I will have to go to the LED headlight though because now my headlight looks dim. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n315/rlyons_photos/Venture/DSC00328Large.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n315/rlyons_photos/Venture/DSC00327Large.jpg

I find that the rear lights are a bit dim... How can I make them brighter?

Rehabbing the old bike. Replaced all instrument panel bulbs, turned on ignition and the headlight warning illuminated. Headlight is very dim and won't cycle lo-hi beam. Replaced bulb, same situation. Now making sure the battery is fully charged. Light worked fine up until now. Any ideas?

I am having a couple of problems on my 1989 Venture Royale. The first problem is the headlight. Works like a champ on high beam, but when you switch to low, it is very dim, and the warning light comes on. About 2 months ago, while driving home at night, the headlight stopped working. I assumed a blown fuse. After pulling the top off of the fuse box, I found that the fuse was not blown, but the plastic fuse box had been melted near the fontact points, and the contacts were burnt and broken. The next day, I bought a new fuse panel, and replaced the old glass fuses with ATM blade style fuses. After I rewired the box and installed all the fuses, everything worked perfect. About 2 weeks later, the low beam went very dim. Checked and changed the fuse, but still very dim. High beam is perfect. I am also getting a brake fluid light and I have checked the fluid many times. There is no problem with the fluid level, or the brake system. I have had 2 motorcycle mechanics verify this. Also, the computer leveling system is not working. When the key is switched to Acc. the system appears to try to turn on, and then I see what looks like an error code that says E4 and then the screen fades out and seems to lose power. in the corner it still reads PSI in very small letters. I have checked the power to the unit, and it is good. I unplugged the connector to the back of the unit and plugged it back in, and it still does the same thing. I cleaned the connectors, still no success. Then I held pressure on the back of the connector, and it worked. I was able to adjust the system with both automatic and manual settings. However as soon as I let go of the connector, it would turn back off. Any help with these 2 problems would be great. I have seen many posts about re-soldering cold joints, and I have thought about trying this. However, I was wondering if anybody might know a step by step on how to do this. Also, does anybody have pictures of these joints and what I am looking for. Thanks in advance for everybodys help.

Just noticed a strange thing with my turn signals. Other riders behind me have told me that the signals are hard to see in the daylight, they say they are dim. Well, just checking things out in my garage, I notice that when I turn the right signal on, when the bulb flashes bright, the left signals and the brake light go slightly dim. When the bulbs go back to regular "running" brightness, the other bulbs brighten back to normal intensity. The same thing occurs in reverse when I turn the left signals on. In a sense, it almost looks like alternating flashing lights when I turn the turn signals on. Anyone seen this before? Could this be a bad flasher unit? A bad ground somewhere? Kinda scratching my head on where to start.

Just purchased a 1990 Venture Royale trike one of those "as is" deals. Had to jump it to start as the battery was dead. I trailered it home and with a new battery attempted to start. When you turn the key on it goes through the checks, the red warning light comes on and the display says battery. The battery voltage drops from 12.5 to 3+ the lights are dim and I haven't hit the starter yet. Sounds like the switch has gone to ground, is that possible or is there something I'm missing. Thanks

I was bleeding all the fluids on the 86 during the Monsoon rains that we have been having and noticed that 1 of my LEDs was dim. I had another one and replaced it. On further inspection I have 2 more dim ones and 1 that is completely out. What gives? I was under the impression that the lifespan of LEDs was quite a few hours of operation. Mine might have a total of 30 hours on them. Is anyone else experiencing low lifetime on their LEDs.

Sorry I haven't updated you lately. Since I cleaned the tank, filter, and carbs, my bike is running good. Still not the best, I know I can do better. However, I do have a curious question. Every once in a while, it will just lug and die. Kind of like it runs out of gas. but then after about 2 minutes, it starts right back up. ALSO, there are times that my lights dim really bad at low rpm but brighten right back up when I rev to about 1500 rpm. any ideas? Thanks Merlin

...But I could only find 168's. The light bulbs. Will 168's work in place of the 158's? Also, if my dash is still dim, where can I look for possibly a bad ground wire or whatever?

dim clock and dim cms display
Guest posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Bought some ebay items to unfry my bike...hoping not to refry it. Clock and computer are dim with no red warning light. I have 12.59 volts at the battery and at the connectors for the clock and computer. The intensity does not change when the bike is started. I did not change out the ignition switch from the fire as it was black with soot, but seemed to function. I did not check resistance across the switch. I did not open up LCD to check any connector there because the clock was dim too. Where to go next? I did scrub the ground wire off the battery to the best of my abilities...same for the red connector. Thanks in advance, Tim
